Effect On Residual And Contact Sprays On The Resistance Of The German Cockroach To Chlordane, G. S. Burden, C. S. Lofgren, J. B. Gahan Jan 1964

Effect On Residual And Contact Sprays On The Resistance Of The German Cockroach To Chlordane, G. S. Burden, C. S. Lofgren, J. B. Gahan

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

When contact sprays are applied for cockroach control, they are dispersed with the expectation that they will kill the insects actually in the room at that time but will have little if any effect on those that enter after the spraying has been completed. Residual sprays, which are applied to stationary objects such as walls or furniture, have the added advantage of also being toxic to those cockroaches that contact the treated surfaces at a later date. If the residual treatments actually kill a greater number of insects, they also may select for resistance at a much higher level and …

Viral Infections Of Domestic Animals, George A. Young Jan 1964

Viral Infections Of Domestic Animals, George A. Young

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

There is a strong tendency in current research on mammalian virus diseases to concentrate on virus activity at a cellular or subcellular level. This trend is summarized adequately by Enders in relation to viral replication as follows: ','The large and ever-increasing volume of published experimental work on viral replication strikingly reveals the central position of this phenomenon in contemporary virological research. There are good reasons, both biological and practical, underlying this intensive effort to understand, i n detail, how a virus particle, without energy transforming apparatus of its own, manages to utilize the metabolic equipment of the cell to produce …

Juries—Challenging Jury Panel For Bias—State V. Eggers (Neb. 1963), Richard L. Schmelling

Nebraska Law Review

A question of first impression in Nebraska—whether it is prejudicial error to compel an accused to be tried by a jury selected from a panel from which an earlier jury had been selected and had heard a similar charge against the same accused—was squarely before the Nebraska Supreme Court in State v. Eggers.

Deadman’S Statute—Nebraska Interpretation—Light V. Ash (Neb. 1963), Victor J. Lich Jr. Jan 1964

Deadman’S Statute—Nebraska Interpretation—Light V. Ash (Neb. 1963), Victor J. Lich Jr.

Nebraska Law Review

The trend in the United States is toward abolition of the common law rules and statutes which bar persons from testifying because they are interested in the outcome of the litigation. Nebraska, in Light v. Ash, appears to have taken a step away from this trend. This decision holds that for purposes of the "Deadman's Statute," in real property litigation, the residency or nonresidency of the spouse makes no difference, overruling a distinction relied upon for forty-one years. And this is despite that fact that there is a substantial property law difference: A resident spouse's real property interest cannot …

Banks And Banking—Special And General Deposits—Glass V. Nebraska State Bank (Neb. 1963), Thomas H. Delay Jan 1964

Banks And Banking—Special And General Deposits—Glass V. Nebraska State Bank (Neb. 1963), Thomas H. Delay

Nebraska Law Review

In Glass v. Nebraska State Bank, the court found that the plaintiff’s deposit was a general deposit creating the relation of debtor-creditor between the bank and depositor. By virtue of the agreement creating a general deposit, the bank could pay or transfer the funds on deposit only on the authorization of the depositor. The defendant bank could not prove that they had received any authorization of the depositor to transfer the funds on deposit, and therefore, the court held the bank liable for misapplication of funds.

Bank Deposits And Collections And Letters Of Credit, Flavel A. Wright Jan 1964

Bank Deposits And Collections And Letters Of Credit, Flavel A. Wright

Nebraska Law Review

In drafting the Uniform Commercial Code, the most controversial article was that relating to bank deposits and collections. The difference in attitudes toward Article IV is best explained by the importance placed on (1) the need for speedy handling of checks, (2) consideration of the practical problems and operations in handling the tremendous volume of items that move through the ordinary commercial banks each day, and (3) the tremendous increase in the volume of these items each year.

Property Interests Within Nebraska Inheritance Tax Provisions, Glen A. Burbridge Jan 1964

Property Interests Within Nebraska Inheritance Tax Provisions, Glen A. Burbridge

Nebraska Law Review

The 1901 Nebraska Legislature in enacting the inheritance tax, following the provisions of most other states, subjected to this tax not only property passing by will or intestacy or transferred in contemplation of death but also all lifetime transfers "intended to take effect in possession or enjoyment after death" or under which, and as a result of death, "any person or body corporate shall become beneficially entitled in possession or expectation to any property or income thereof." Although the statute exists in substantially the same form today, its scope is largely undetermined by Nebraska Supreme Court decisions. Based upon the …

Recent Limnological Studies Of The Alkaline Lakes In Nebraska And North Dakota, D. B. Mccarraher Jan 1964

Recent Limnological Studies Of The Alkaline Lakes In Nebraska And North Dakota, D. B. Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Environmental relationships and biological indices have been recorded for 1,200 sandhills lakes in Nebraska since 1954. Three lakes in central and southern North Dakota were investigated during the years 1963 to 1964. Most of the Nebraska lakes were alkaline eutrophic of the sodium bicarbonate and sodium + potassium carbonate types. The North Dakota lakes range from sodium bicarbonate to sodium sulfate types. These lakes may be classified as saline eutrohpic. The ionic composition differs from that of the marine and inland sodium chloride type of water. The invertebrate fauna of permanently alkaline environments are discussed from the point of view …

Preliminary Studies In The Development Of A Gastric Battery For Fish, Earl R. Kendle, Larry A. Morris Jan 1964

Preliminary Studies In The Development Of A Gastric Battery For Fish, Earl R. Kendle, Larry A. Morris

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

In 1956 Parker S. Trefethen described an external ultrasonic tag for tracking fish. This tag was designed for use on adult king salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytsca, and was subsequently used to track these fish above Bonneville Dam (Johnson, 1957). Although this tracking system was the best available at that time several limitations to its use were evident: the transmitter and power supply were large and thus impractical for use on small fish, and the unit was attached externally and was likely to influence movement, and the life of the battery was very short (17 hours). Succeeding transmitters were somewhat longer-lived …

Predator And Rodent Control In The United States, A. S. Leopold, S. A. Cain, C. M. Cottam, I. N. Gabrielson, T. L. Kimball Jan 1964

Predator And Rodent Control In The United States, A. S. Leopold, S. A. Cain, C. M. Cottam, I. N. Gabrielson, T. L. Kimball

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

In a frontier community, animal life is cheap and held in low esteem. Thus it was that a frontiersman would shoot a bison for its tongue or an eagle for amusement. In America we inherited a particularly prejudiced and unsympathetic view of animals that may at times be dangerous or troublesome. From the days of the mountain men through the period of conquest and settlement of the West, incessant war was waged against the wolf, grizzly, cougar, and the lowly coyote, and even today in the remaining backwoods the maxim persists that the only good varmint is a dead one. …
