Changing Patterns of Communities in the Midwest (Dorothy Switzer)
The regional concept of economic planning and development discussed in the December issue of Business in Nebraska was the subject also of a workshop conference on "Changing Patterns of People and Communities in the Midwest," held in Omaha last month. It is deemed appropriate to report here the most significant highlight of the conference because the panel presentations and subsequent discussions further developed several important apects of regional growth.

The University and State Development: Centennial Retrospect and Second Century Prospect (Dorothy Switzer)
Business Summary (R. L. Busboom)
Both Physical Volume and Dollar Volume indexes indicate that Nebraska's November, 1968, level of business activity was notably above that of the same month last year. For both indicators, Nebraska's changes were at nearly the same rates as those of the U. S. On a month-to-month basis, however, Nebraska as well as the U. S. experienced Dollar and Physical Volume declines, from October, 1968, to November, 1968, that were more than seasonally expectable. Also, Nebraska's drop-off was more than that of the …

Nebraska's Export of Agricultural Products (Dorothy Switzer)
Nebraska moved up from fourth to third place among the seven states in the West North Central region in dollar volume of agricultural exports in fiscal 1968 and retained its position as ninth ranking state in the nation, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Sales amounting to $229.5 million of Nebraska farm products constituted 14.5% of the regional total, exceeded only by Iowa, which accounted for almost one -fourth of the total, and by Kansas, which was second with almost 19%. The West North Central region was again the …

Extent of Corporation Farming in Nebraska (Dorothy Switzer)
Concern has been expressed in many quarters over the apparent increase in the number of nonfarm corporations that are buying land and initiating new farming enterprises in Nebraska. It has become important, therefore, to know the facts about the number of these corporations and the amount of farm land they are operating in the state. This information has recently been made available because Nebraska is one of 22 states included in a preliminary report summarizing a survey of corporate farming.

A Comparison Of Silphids Taken From Covered And Uncovered Carrion (Coleoptera : Silphidae), Brett C. Ratcliffe, Robert J. Luedtke
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
As an extension of the silphid research by the senior author, an experiment was conducted to ascertain the differences, if any, in silphid species that would be attracted by placing covered and uncovered animal carcasses in the field. A review of the literature indicated that nothing has been published in this regard.
In eastern Nebraska silphids are very active in the spring, their numbers being greater at this time of year than at any other. University of Nebraska Entomology Museum records show that 14 species have been taken in Lancaster County.
Two tests were conducted at Steven's Creek, three miles …

Farm Custom Rates Paid In Nebraska 1968, Douglas D. Duey, Robert Rawson
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Custom work is defined as “the hiring of men with machines for performance of a specified machine task.” The custom rate includes charges for the machine, tractor or power unit, fuel, lubrication, incidental supplies and operator's labor, except where otherwise indicated. The costs of material applied are not included-fertilizer, insecticide, herbicide and seed being cases in point. Custom rates in this circular were summarized from questionnaires received from farmers and custom operators throughout Nebraska. Each was asked to report the rates he charged or paid for customwork in 1968. The returns were tabulated for each of the state crop reporting …

Automobile Liability Insurance In Nebraska—An Asset Or Liability For The Out-Of-State Defendant?, Stephen A. Mazurak
Automobile Liability Insurance In Nebraska—An Asset Or Liability For The Out-Of-State Defendant?, Stephen A. Mazurak
Nebraska Law Review
The ever-increasing use of the automobile by the American public has caused a corresponding increase in the amount of litigation resulting from this use. When this litigation involves a traffic accident occurring outside the jurisdiction of the state courts where the plaintiff brings suit, particular problems arise. One possible method of obtaining jurisdiction over a nonresident defendant for an out-of-state accident is to use the defendant's automobile liability policy alleging it to be an asset. If the insurance company is doing business in the plaintiff's state this "asset" may then be asserted as establishing the basis of a quasi in …

Requirement Contracts In Bankruptcy, Gary B. Pingel
Requirement Contracts In Bankruptcy, Gary B. Pingel
Nebraska Law Review
Requirement contracts, while considered to be a species of executory contracts, actually are a genus in themselves because of the unique rules that cover a breach of such contracts. While normally an executory contract is considered breached when one of the parties fails to perform within the time limit set for performance, that is generally not true for both parties of a requirements contract. "A requirements buyer does not breach his contract when requirements for supplies diminish or when he ceases to have requirements by reason of his going out of business." This article deals exclusively with this uniqueness of …

A New Rhinoceros From The Nebraska Miocene, Lloyd G. Tanner
A New Rhinoceros From The Nebraska Miocene, Lloyd G. Tanner
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
A new species of rhinoceros, Menoceras marslandensis, is here proposed. It is based upon a nearly complete skull from the upper part of the Marsland Formation, Hemingford Group (Miocene), of Box Butte County, Nebraska. The new species was probably derived from Menoceras arikarense (Barbour), collected from the Agate Springs Quarries (Arikaree Group, Harrison Formation) of Sioux County, Nebraska, with which both Diceratherium niobrarensis Peterson and D. cooki Peterson are likely synonymous. From Menoceras arikarense, the presumed ancestral stock, Menoceras marslandensis differs in possessing the following characters: (1) very long, fused but slightly cleft, nasals, with flattened, rugose areas …
