Constitutional Law: Sixth Amendment Guarantee Of The Right To A Speedy Trial Extended To Convicts With A Detainer Request Pending From Another Jurisdiction: Smith V. Hooey, 393 U.S. 374 (1969), Michael F. Ward Jan 1969

Constitutional Law: Sixth Amendment Guarantee Of The Right To A Speedy Trial Extended To Convicts With A Detainer Request Pending From Another Jurisdiction: Smith V. Hooey, 393 U.S. 374 (1969), Michael F. Ward

Nebraska Law Review

In Smith v. Hooey, the United States Supreme Court took another step in guaranteeing a prisoner his constitutional right to a fair and speedy trial. The Court held that a jurisdiction which has caused a detainer request to be filed with a second incarcerating jurisdiction, whether it be state or federal, must upon request by the prisoner make a good faith attempt to have the prisoner surrendered for trial upon the complaint from which the detainer arose. The Court cited Klopfer v. North Carolina as authority for enforcement of this sixth amendment right against states. In Klopfer, the Court …

Engineering For Higher Yields, Yoshiaki Ishizuka Jan 1969

Engineering For Higher Yields, Yoshiaki Ishizuka

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

It was difficult for me to understand the meaning of "engineering" as used in the title of my speech. I asked Dr. Haskins who told me that the term engineering is used here because one traditional role of the engineer has been the application of scientific principles in the solution of practical problems, and that in this case we want to consider the application of biological principles in both past and future increases in crop yield. Accordingly, I intend to express my thoughts on this problem, and to ask your suggestions for obtaining higher and better yields in the future. …

Mechanisms Of Translocation Of Plant Metabolites, Orlin Biddulph Jan 1969

Mechanisms Of Translocation Of Plant Metabolites, Orlin Biddulph

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The mechanism of translocation has been discussed since the latter part of the 19th Century, when DeVries, in 1885, proposed protoplasmic streaming as the mechanism. Since that time O. F. Curtis, beginning about 1920, and more recently Thaine (1961) and Canny and Phillips (1963) have become interested in this approach to the problem. In the meantime Munch, in 1930, proposed a pressure flow mechanism based on a turgor pressure gradient in the phloem between metabolite supplying and metabolite consuming areas. These two mechanisms, and others, are fully discussed in Swanson (1959), so the present paper will deal with a compilation …

Levels Of Calcium And Phosphorus For Growing-Finishing Swine, G. W. Libal, E. R. Peo, Jr., R. P. Andrews, P. E. Vipperman, Jr. Jan 1969

Levels Of Calcium And Phosphorus For Growing-Finishing Swine, G. W. Libal, E. R. Peo, Jr., R. P. Andrews, P. E. Vipperman, Jr.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The calcium and phosphorus requirements of growing-finishing swine have not been satisfactorily resolved. Recently it was suggested that levels of calcium and phosphorus needed in diets of growing-finishing (G-F) swine for optimum growth and feed conversion may be different from those needed for optimum bone development (Miller et al., 1960; Lloyd et al., 1961; Rutledge et al., 1961; Combs et al., 1966). The problem of determining calcium and phosphorus requirements is further magnified by the observation of Chapman et al. (1955) that G-F swine do not utilize plant phosphorus as efficiently as inorganic phosphorus. In …

Employment in Export-Related Jobs in Nebraska (Dorothy Switzer)

How many Nebraskans are employed in export-related jobs? What percentage of the state's total private employment is auributable to export business ?

These questions are raised frequently, but until recently no answers could be based on more up- to - date data than 1960 figures. Estimates of employment related to exports of goods, by state, based on data from a 1965 survey of the origins of exports, have now been provided, however, by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. Although unfortunately these estimates do not reflect the …
