Criteria For The Discovery Of Beta Cephei Stars According To The Mu -Mechanism Theory, Richard Stothers, Norman R. Simon
Criteria For The Discovery Of Beta Cephei Stars According To The Mu -Mechanism Theory, Richard Stothers, Norman R. Simon
Norman R. Simon Papers
Observational discriminants are proposed to test the μ-mechanism theory of β Cephei stars as advanced by Stothers and Simon (1969). These include: helium and nitrogen overabundances, far ultraviolet flux excesses (high surface temperature), narrow (occasionally broad) spectral line widths, and binary character. A list of potential β Cep candidates, comprising 24 spectroscopic binaries with spectral type O9-B4 III -V and a large orbital ratio of masses, has been compiled for the benefit of observers interested in searching for new β Cep stars. The data thus far accumulated are not in contradiction with, and occasionally positively support, the μ-mechanism …

Positive And Negative Prejudice: Interactions Of Prejudice With Race And Social Desirability, Richard A. Dienstbier
Positive And Negative Prejudice: Interactions Of Prejudice With Race And Social Desirability, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Two studies were conducted in order to investigate positive prejudice toward Negroes. By defining positive prejudice as favoritism toward Negro stimulus persons over white stimulus persons of identical personality descriptions, it was possible to compare patterns of Negro bias on a variety of measures. The results of Study I indicated that positive Negro prejudice was more likely when stimulus persons at the positive personality level were compared. The results of Study II indicated that dogmatism and rigidity and attitudes associated with authoritarian ism are negatively related to positive prejudice. Dimensions of formality of relationships and antisubordination of Negroes were useful …

Thermal Requirements To Protect Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell
Thermal Requirements To Protect Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Water temperatures affect aquatic organisms in a number of ways, both directly and indirectly. Some of the latter effects are quite subtle. High temperatures can have direct lethal effects but sublethal levels operating over long periods can be just as harmful through delayed lethal effects and the production of nonlethal stresses which eventually result in changes in the population, reduced growth or reproduction, and the lowering of resistance to parasites, dis ease, and competitors. Temperature, in combination with certain other factors such as day length, influences re producing processes. High water temperatures may stimulate or retard migration, spawning, feeding, and …

The Teaching Of Economics - A Radical Approach To Economics: Basis For A New Curriculum, Richard C. Edwards, Arthur Macewan
The Teaching Of Economics - A Radical Approach To Economics: Basis For A New Curriculum, Richard C. Edwards, Arthur Macewan
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to outline a radical approach to economics and to suggest how several important social problems might be dealt with in that framework. Our effort to develop a new curriculum is motivated by the conviction that the orthodox approach to economics cannot deal with the important problems of modern society.
Orthodox economic analysis as presented from the elementary course through the graduate seminar is based upon an acceptance of the status quo in social relations. Microanalysis presupposes the individualistic ownership and decision-making systems typical of capitalist societies, and in this narrow context the pecuniary behavior …
Misidentification In Estimating The Paternal Sib Correlation, L. Dale Van Vleck
Misidentification In Estimating The Paternal Sib Correlation, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Misidentification of sires of cows in paternal half-sib analyses of variance biases the estimate of heritability downward. Four models o£ misidentification yield approximately the same reductions in estimated heritability. The reduced estimates are approximately p2 of the actual heritability where p is the fraction of cows whose sire is correctly identified. The reduction in heritability estimates from daughter-dam regression would be to a fraction, p, of the actual heritability where p is the fraction of dams correctly identified. Empirical paternal sib analyses of New York Dairy Herd Improvement Holstein records suggest that misidentification is more common among grade cows …

Effects Of Age, Herd, And Herd Status On Classification Scores Of Jersey Cattle, H. L. Barr, H. W. Carter, L. Dale Van Vleck
Effects Of Age, Herd, And Herd Status On Classification Scores Of Jersey Cattle, H. L. Barr, H. W. Carter, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Classification was arranged for herds belonging to the official Jersey program concurrently with classification for Jersey research herds. Herds were categorized as official, registered research and grade research. Cattle were also grouped as 2 year olds, 3 to 4 year olds and 5 year olds.
Differences for herd status were significant (P < .05) for all type traits except stature, breed character, feet and legs and fore udder. Research cattle scored higher only in dairy character and udder quality. Differences between registered research and grade research cattle were not significant.
Differences for age were significant for all traits except feet and legs, mammary and rear udder. Five year-olds scored highest in final score, general appearance, stature, breed character, back and rump, and chest and barrel. The traits relating to mammary system were scored higher on younger cows.

Evaluating Economic Efficiency By Relative Price Analysis (Feed, Livestock And Product Sectors), J. Y. Chen, J. B. Hassler
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The specific objective of this research is to delineate efficient and inefficient economic performance areas and thereby locate the more significant problem aspects for research and program attention. Specific price analyses will be used to evaluate the price interrelationships for functional efficiency in the dimensions of space, form and time. Not only the efficient aspects of production and marketing will be indicated by the analyses but the inefficient aspects of economic performance will be stressed also. This research will provide some foundational information for making decisions, both public and private. Moreover, it will direct the attention of researchers or program …

An Annotated List Of Grasshoppers (Orthoptera, Acrididae) From The Eleven Panhandle Counties Of Nebraska, A. F. Hagen
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
A description of the study area is presented indicating the ecological niches that exist in the Nebraska Panhandle. Seventy-five species of grasshoppers are listed from the 11 Panhandle counties. Twenty-one occur in the subfamily Acridinae, 29 in Oedipodinae, 24 in Cyrtacanthacridinae and 1 in Romaleinae. Ecological, taxonomic and distributional data are presented.
Wheat And Feed Grains In The Great Plains And Northwest: Supply Response And Resource Use, G. A. Helmers, W. F. Lagrone
Wheat And Feed Grains In The Great Plains And Northwest: Supply Response And Resource Use, G. A. Helmers, W. F. Lagrone
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The basic objective of the research reported here is to estimate supply response with varying product prices for wheat and feed grains. Within a framework of representative farm income maximization, changing product price relationships lead to supply adjustments which are aggregated and expressed as normative supply functions. Another objective is to analyze the resource use and net returns with varying prices for wheat and feed grains. The analysis of resources considers changes in overall levels of resources demanded in response to changing wheat and feed grain prices. Similarly, the analysis of net returns examines differences in net returns in response …
