De Haas-Van Alphen Effect In Dilute Beryllium-Copper Alloys , I.S. Goldstein, David J. Sellmyer, B.L. Averbach
De Haas-Van Alphen Effect In Dilute Beryllium-Copper Alloys , I.S. Goldstein, David J. Sellmyer, B.L. Averbach
David Sellmyer Publications
The de Haas-van Alphen effect was investigated in pure beryllium and in Be-Cu alloys containing up to 0.34 at.% Cu. The extremal cross-sectional areas of the cigar-shaped third-band electron pieces of Fermi surface decreased with alloying. The areas of the coronet-shaped second-band hole piece increased with alloying. The magnitude of the area changes were compared with rigid-band-theory predictions. Corrections for lattice-parameter changes were included when possible. In the low-concentration limit, the theory is able to account for the observed area changes. For the highest-concentration alloy, there are deviations, for all areas measured, to greater changes than are predicted by the …
Pesticide Residues In Channel Catfish From Nebraska, N. P. Stucky
Pesticide Residues In Channel Catfish From Nebraska, N. P. Stucky
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) were collected in all of the major watersheds in Nebraska during the summer of 1964. Individual fat samples and composite blood samples obtained from these fish were analyzed to determine the concentrations of residues of DDT and its metabolites (o,p'DDT, p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDD, and DDE) and dieldrin. A total of 178 fish, collected from 18 sites, were analyzed. As expected, the fat samples contained higher concentrations of the pesticides than did the blood samples. DDT residues were found in all fat samples, and average levels from 10 fish sampled at each site ranged from a …

Transient Optical Absorption By Self-Trapped Excitons In Alkali Halide Crystals, Robert Fuller, R.T. Williams, M.N. Kabler
Robert G. Fuller Publications
Transient absorption spectra produced by pulsed electron excitation at low temperature have been identified as due to transitions originating in the lowest triplet states of the self-trapped exciton. The current model, comprising an electron plus a self-trapped hole, is shown to provide electronic configurations for the higher excited states which give a good account of the principal features of the spectra.
Selection On Test-Day Fat Percentage And Milk Production, J. F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck
Selection On Test-Day Fat Percentage And Milk Production, J. F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Selection procedures which weight equally each test day sample may not be optimum for selection on test days.
Monthly test day data from 63,300 records of artificially sired Holsteins with 305-day lactations were from the New York Dairy Records Processing Laboratory. Heritabilities (h 2) were estimated intraherd-year- season from sire components of variance for monthly test day production within lactations 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 or greater. Heritability of lactation fat percentage decreased from .60 to .40 from first to fifth lactations whereas heritability for 305-day milk yield increased slightly from .25 to .37 with succeeding lactations. Heritabilities for …
Mp25 The Problem Of Freight Car Supply, John Richard Felton
Mp25 The Problem Of Freight Car Supply, John Richard Felton
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
As early as 1907 the Interstate Commerce Commission held extensive hearings on freight car shortages. At frequent intervals ever since, Congress and the commission have addressed themselves to the problem of freight car supply with considerable vigor but meager results. Allegations of an inadequate supply of freight cars have been widespread in recent years. The decline in the number of freight cars is easy to document: between 1959 and 1968, the number of cars used in grain transport (boxcars and covered hopper cars) declined by 26%. If, however, consideration is given to changes in car capacity and car miles …

A Study Of The Architectural Space Necessary To Perform The Theatre Of Antonin Artaud, Larry L. Peterson
A Study Of The Architectural Space Necessary To Perform The Theatre Of Antonin Artaud, Larry L. Peterson
Masters in Architecture Program: Theses
Preface excerpt
The theatre of Artaud was being attempted by a few companies, notably, the Royal Shakespeare Company with Peter Brook doing "Marat/Sade;" and the Living Theatre with Judith and Julian Beck performing "The Brig."
I found the style of both performances exciting, and as a student of architectural design, I found great challenge in attempting a theatre space study which would allow the environmental qualities of the space itself to become another tool of the mise en scene.
My point of view, which developed during this study, was that the theatre should demand the entire company's complete involvement …

Taxonomy Of The Neotoma Albigula-Group Of Woodrats In Central Mexico, E. Raymond Hall, Hugh H. Genoways
Taxonomy Of The Neotoma Albigula-Group Of Woodrats In Central Mexico, E. Raymond Hall, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Study of specimens collected from critical localities since 1944 reveals that: Neotoma montezumae and N. leucodon zacatecae are indistinguishable from earlier named taxa; N. latifrons is a subspecies of an earlier named taxon; and N. palatina, previously known from only one specimen and thought by some mammalogists to be merely an aberrant individual of Neotoma albigula, is a species distinct from N. albigula as Goldman tentatively decided when he named it 64 years ago. In the narial passage, the partition formed by the vomer that extends well behind the hard palate as a sword-like projection is present in …

Feeding Responses Of The Sweetclover Weevil To Various Sugars And Related Compounds, W. R. Akeson, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz, G. R. Manglitz
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The sweetclover root disk bioassay was used to test the activity of 21 sugars and related compounds as feeding stimulants for the sweetclover weevil Sitona cylindricollis Fähraeus. Of the compounds tested, sucrose was the most effective feeding stimulant. Compounds with moderate stimulant activity were fructose, glucose, galactose, mannose, myo-inositol, and maltose. Slightly active feeding stimulants included ribose, xylose, sorbose, and sedoheptulose. Arabinose, arabitol, mannitol, xylitol, cellobiose, raffinose, soluble starch, ascorbic acid, glucuronic acid, and glucosamine failed to exhibit feeding stimulant activity in these tests, Four compounds (arabinose. ascorbic acid, glucuronic acid, and mannitol) were tested for feeding deterrent activity, and …

A Syncoeliid (Hemiuroidea Faust, 1929) Metacercaria On A Copepod From The Atlantic Equatorial Current, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The complete life cycle for a species of Syncoeliidae Odhner, 1927, is unknown. Adults are known from the branchial cavity and mouth of marine fishes which are usually found offshore, and second intermediate hosts have been reported. Sars (1885, Challenger Rept. Zool. 13: 228 p.) described the metacercaria of Syncoelium filiferum from the perivisceral cavity of the euphausiids Nematoscelis megalops Sars, 1883, and Thysanoessa gregaria Sars, 1883, in the South Atlantic. DoIlfus (1966, Bull. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat. Ser. 2 38: 195-200) described Metacercaria (Gen. ?) theomonodi from some poorly preserved material amidst a collection of "copepods and chaetognaths" collected …
Harvest Mice (Genus Reithrodontomys) Of Nicaragua, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
Harvest Mice (Genus Reithrodontomys) Of Nicaragua, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Harvest mice of the genus Reithrodontomys first were reported from Nicaragua by Oldfield Thomas (1907), who originally described Reithrodontomys sumichrasti modestus based on a single specimen from Jinotega. J. A. Allen (1908, 1910) recorded additional specimens of R. s. modestus, which still was the only species known from the country when A. H. Howell (1914) revised the genus Reithrodontomys. In his thorough review of Latin American harvest mice, Hooper (1952) added a second species, Reithrodontomys mexicanus lucifrons, to the Nicaraguan fauna, and Englert (1959) and Anderson and Jones (1960) recorded three additional kinds. The present report treats …

Far-Infrared Properties Of Lattice Resonant Modes. Iv. Paraelectric Impurities, Roger D. Kirby, A.E. Hughes, A.J. Sievers
Roger Kirby Publications
We have studied the three paraelectric defect systems KCl: Li+, RbCl: Ag+, and NaCl: OH- through the temperature dependence and electric field dependence of their far-infrared absorption spectra. It is found that the motional energy states for the defects in these three systems have many properties in common. In each case the impurity ion has an associated electric dipole moment and low-lying tunneling energy levels. The defects also have higher energy levels which can be attributed, at least in part, to c. m. resonant-mode motion. The KCl: Li+ tunneling levels are found to be well described by …
Photoionization Of Argon And Xenon Including Final-State Correlation, Anthony F. Starace
Photoionization Of Argon And Xenon Including Final-State Correlation, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
Effects of final-state correlation on the photoionization cross sections for the 3p shell in argon and the 4d shell in xenon are calculated by the reaction-matrix method, starting from the Herman-Skillman model Hamiltonian, for photoelectron energies 0<~ε<~1.2 a.u. and 0<~ε<~2.52 a.u., respectively. The results for argon complement Hartree-Fock and other final-state correlation calculations; the results for xenon are the first ab initio calculations of this kind. Although length and velocity forms of the transition matrix element agree in the initial local-field approximation, they are shown to diverge necessarily when only the final state is improved.

Limited Resurrection Of The Born Approximation, Paul Finkler
Limited Resurrection Of The Born Approximation, Paul Finkler
Paul Finkler Papers
It is shown that the ordinary Born approximation for pn and pp̅ charge-exchange scattering correctly accounts for (1) the shape of the forward peak for 0 ≤ (-t) ≤ µ2/2 at PL = 8 GeV/c, and (2) the energy dependence of the cross sections at t=0 in the energy range PL,=2—8 GeV/c. This result is analogous to the well-known success of the electric Born approximation in Π+ photoproduction. It is then shown that the simplest interpretation of this surprising result within the framework of Regge-pole theory is in terms …
Bibliography Of Diseases And Parasites Of Marine Fish And Shellfish (With Emphasis On Commercially Important Species), Carl J. Sindermann
Bibliography Of Diseases And Parasites Of Marine Fish And Shellfish (With Emphasis On Commercially Important Species), Carl J. Sindermann
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The literature on diseases and parasites of marine animals has been accumulating at an accelerating rate in recent decades, and at a seemingly geometrical rate in the past few years. Reviews of selected aspects of the subject have appeared (Cheng, 1967; Sindermann, 1966; Sindermann and Rosenfield, 1967). References listed in these papers include a significant, but still a small part, of the available literature. With the proliferation of journals in many languages throughout the world, a complete bibliography, even in a narrow area of research, is almost an impossibility. Then too, the daily appearance of new published information represents an …

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xlv. Schistotaenia Srivastavai N. Sp. (Cestoda: Amabiliidae) From The Red-Necked Grebe, Podiceps Grisegena (Boddaert), Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The genus Schistotaenia Cohn, 1900, at present includes six species, all parasites of grebes (Podicipediformes). Among helminths found in a red-necked grebe, Podiceps grisegena (Boddaert), on October 18, 1966, at Anchorage, Alaska, were cestodes representing two species of Schistotaenia, of which one is described here as new. The host was an adult bird which evidently had been injured during migration.
This cestode is named in honor of Dr. H. D. Srivastava, in recognition of his significant contributions to helminthological research.
Misidentification And Sire Evaluation, L. Dale Van Vleck
Misidentification And Sire Evaluation, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Biases in evaluation of sires result from misidentified records in the sire group averages used for sire evaluation. The bias increases as the fraction of misidentified cows increases. Use of variance components estimated from misidentified records also contributes to the bias. Estimates of the correlation between estimated and true genetic value, as well as estimates of genetic progress due to selection, are biased when misidentified records are included in sire group averages.

By notice of proposed rule making published in the Federal Register on April 10, 1970 (35 F.R. 5961), and of April 14, 1970 (35 F.R. 6069), notice was given that it was proposed to add a new Part 17 to Title 50, CFR.
The proposal published on April 10, 1970 (35 F.R. 5961), listed ports of entry through which all fish and wildlife (with certain exceptions) must enter the United States, and also announced a public hearing which was held in May 11, 1970. Written comments, suggestions, and objections were also invited and received.
Influence Of Opacity On The Pulsational Stability Of Massive Stars With Uniform Chemical Composition, Richard Stothers, Norman R. Simon
Influence Of Opacity On The Pulsational Stability Of Massive Stars With Uniform Chemical Composition, Richard Stothers, Norman R. Simon
Norman R. Simon Papers
The maximum mass of homogeneous stars which are stable against nuclear-energized pulsations has been re-determined by using a full opacity formula and an accurate treatment of the equilibrium structure of the outer layers where non-scattering sources of opacity are important damping agents. Sixteen composition mixtures were used, covering the range 0 ≤ Y ≤ (1 - Z) and 0 ≤ Z ≤ 0.05. The nuclear energy sources were taken to be the CN cycle and the triple-a process. Due to the primary influence of bound-free absorption by metals (and, to a lesser extent, of free-free absorption by hydrogen and …
