The Occurrence And Significance Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls In The Environment, E.H. Dustman, L.F. Stickel, L.J. Blus, W.L. Reichel, S.N. Wiemeyer

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The natural world today contains a vast array of man-made chemicals, many of them with biological potency in quantities scarcely measurable tow decades ago. Wild animals encounter these chemicals in multifold combination, but man's knowledge of their effects on wild species progresses haltingly. While research focused on DDT, dieldrin, and related chemicals that were obvious suspects for cause of environmental problems, other compounds, some unidentified, spread and increased.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) constitute one such group. PCB's are products of modern industrial chemistry that have escaped to the environment by routes still largely unknown. They have become ubiquitous in the world …

Angular And Energy Distribution Of Cross Sections For Electron Production By 50-300-Kev-Proton Impacts On N2, O2, Ne, And Ar, J. B. Crooks, M. Eugene Rudd Jan 1971

Angular And Energy Distribution Of Cross Sections For Electron Production By 50-300-Kev-Proton Impacts On N2, O2, Ne, And Ar, J. B. Crooks, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Cross sections differential in angle and ejection energy for electron production by proton impact on nitrogen, oxygen, neon, and argon have been measured using electrostatic analysis and counting of individual electrons. The range of proton energies was 50-300 keV, the angles ranged from 10° to 160°, and the electron energies were measured from 1.5 to 1057 eV. Integrations over angle and/or electron energy yielded singly differential and total electron production cross sections. Our total cross sections for oxygen fall halfway between previous data of deHeer et al. and Hooper et al., but our argon cross sections agree better with deHeer …

The Flathead Catfish In Unchannelized And Channelized Missouri River, Nebraska, Larry A. Morris, Ralph Langemeier, Arthur Witt Jr. Jan 1971

The Flathead Catfish In Unchannelized And Channelized Missouri River, Nebraska, Larry A. Morris, Ralph Langemeier, Arthur Witt Jr.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Flathead catfish, Pylodictus olivaris (Rafinesque), were studied in approximately 83.7 km of unchannelized and 67.6 km miles of channelized Missouri River. Growth rates were slower in the unchannelized section than they were in the channelized section. The oldest fish in the unchannelized section was 25 years old, while in the channelized study area the oldest was 10 years. In the pectoral spines of progressively older fish from both sections, enlargement of the lumen obliterated early annuli. Much of the annual increment of growth was accomplished during June, July and August. Males became sexually mature at 3 to 4 years of …
