Trends In Genetic And Phenotypic Variances For Milk Production, S. L. Mirande, L. Dale Van Vleck
Trends In Genetic And Phenotypic Variances For Milk Production, S. L. Mirande, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Residual standard deviations estimated separately for each year of first freshening from first lactation milk records of artificially sired Holstein cows increased from 1960 to 1982, especially after 1976. The pattern on the square root scale was similar. On the logarithmic scale, residual standard deviations were smallest in the middle of the time period. Heritabilities estimated from paternal half-sib correlations were greater than .30 on all scales until about 1976 when estimates began to go below .20. Estimates were similar for untransformed and transformed records. When records were divided into four herd production groups within each year, the same patterns …

The Nutritional Value Of Normal And High Lysine Corns For Weanling And Growing-Finishing Swine When Fed At Four Lysine Levels, G. L. Asche, A. J. Lewis, E. R. Peo, Jr., J. D. Crenshaw
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
One-hundred-ninety-two weanling pigs from two separate trials, (initial weight 6.0 and 5.6 kg) and 400 growing-finishing pigs (initial weight 17 kg) were fed normal and high lysine corn diets containing four levels of lysine in a 2 • 4 factorial arrangement. Crossbred (Large White • Landrace x Duroc) pigs were used in all experiments. The objectives of the experiments were to (1) compare normal and high lysine corn when fed at different lysine levels, (2) determine the lysine requirements for the three stages of growth and (3) evaluate the effect of protein level on the lysine requirement. All diets were …
Two Modal Action Patterns With A Continuous Temporal Distribution, Alan B. Bond, George W. Barlow, William Rogers
Two Modal Action Patterns With A Continuous Temporal Distribution, Alan B. Bond, George W. Barlow, William Rogers
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Most methods of quantitative analysis of animal behavior assume that action patterns can be unambiguously classified into discrete, exclusive categories. This is not invariably the case. The digging behavior of the Midas cichlid (Cichlasoma citrinellum), for example, exhibits two functionally distinct modalities, scoop and pi&, that intergrade continuously in form but are separable probabilistically. We present a technique for analyzing such behaviors that provides a reliable basis for formulating and verifying categories and allows a quantitative assessment of functional dissimilarity.

Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk
Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Although much research has been devoted to studying sex differences In functioning (e.g., Maccoby and Jacklin 1974), most efforts have been directed toward documenting or elucidating the proximate causes of sex differences. Few attempts have been made, however, to explain the ultimate causes of these differences or the selective pressures that have led to the development or psychological differences between males and females [for exception see Symons (1979) and Daly and Wilson (1983)]. Toward this end of blending psychology with evolutionary theory we develop what we call the " primary caretaker hypothesis," which predicts that the sex that through evolutionary …
Heritability Estimates And Adjustment Factors For Yearling Testicular Size In Different Breeds Of Beef Bulls, Donald D. Lunstra, Keith E. Gregory, Larry V. Cundiff
Heritability Estimates And Adjustment Factors For Yearling Testicular Size In Different Breeds Of Beef Bulls, Donald D. Lunstra, Keith E. Gregory, Larry V. Cundiff
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Little information is available on breed differences and variation in testicular development of young beef bulls. Larger testis size in young bulls is favorably correlated with sperm output, age at puberty, mature testicular size, and pregnancy rate. If testicular size is to be considered in selection programs for young sires, the breed differences, heritabilities, and relationships of testicular measurements to age and body weight must be established for young beef bulls.
The objectives of this study were to measure and define breed differences and variations in testicular size of yearling beef bulls, determine the heritability of yearling testicular size, and …

Biochemical Evidence For Hybridization In Fire Ants, Robert K. Vander Meer, Clifford S. Lofgren, Francisco M. Alvarez
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
Hybridization in social insects has been predicted on a theoretical basis by Pearson (1983); however, it is not a commonly reported phenomenon among ants. We recently found support for this theory when we discovered unique biochemical evidence for hybridization between Solenopsis invicta Buren and Solenopsis richteri Forel, two South American fire ant species that were inadvertently introduced into the southeastern United States.

Four trials were conducted with 1,480 pigs (initial wt: 23 kg in trial 1, 29 kg in trial 2 and 49 kg in trial 3 and 4) to determine the effect of dietary fat on pig performance, nutrient separation in an automated feed distribution system, dust levels in swine buildings and integrity of the respiratory system of swine. Two modified-open-front (B-1 and B-2) and two environmentally regulated (E-1 and E-2) growing-finishing buildings, of identical design, were used in each trial. In trial 1,250 pigs (25 pens of 10 pigs/pen) in B-1 were fed a ground, mixed, corn-soybean meal diet (15% …

An Evaluation Of Threonine And Isoleucine As The Third And Fourth Limiting Amino Acids In Corn For Growing Swine, D. A. Grosbach, A. J. Lewis, E. R. Peo, Jr.
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A metabolism experiment and two growth experiments were conducted to determine if threonine and isoleucine are the third and fourth limiting amino acids in corn for growing swine. In each experiment there were four dietary treatments. The basal diet contained corn fortified with minerals, vitamins, lysine and tryptophan. Threonine additions of 0 or .17% and isoleucine additions of 0 or .22% of the diet were evaluated in a 2 • 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The addition of threonine reduced (P<.001) the daily urinary excretion of urea N and total N. There was a tendency for urea N excretion to be reduced further when isoleucine was added in combination with threonine.

Introduction To Species Of Special Concern In Pennsylvania, Chapter 6--Mammals, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
First two paragraphs:
The mammals in Pennsylvania have long been under the management authority of the Pennsylvania Game Commission, but it was not until 1978 that an effort was made to deal with threatened and endangered mammals in the Commonwealth. At this time, Michael J. Puglisi was appointed as Coordinator for the Threatened and Endangered Species Program within the Game Commission. In late February 1979, Mr. Puglisi asked Hugh H. Genoways to chair an informal study group on endangered mammals in Pennsylvania. The immediate concern of this group was to be the development of a list of threatened and endangered …

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Isolates of the most common 0 serogroups of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) associated with infant diarrhea (designated class I) adhere to Hep-2 cells; the genes for this adhesin, termed EPEC adherence factor (EAF), are located on plasmids 50-70 MDa in size. Volunteers ingested 1010 organisms of an 0127:H6 Hep-2-adhesive class I strain (E2348/69) or its plasmid-minus, nonadhesive derivative. Diarrhea occurred in nine of 10 volunteers who ingested the parent strain (mean, 1,178 ml) but in only two of nine who took the plasmid-minus variant (mean, 433 ml; P < .006). All volunteers ill from strain E2348/69 mounted serum IgA and IgG responses to a 94-kDa plasmid-associated outer membrane protein of E2348/69; this protein was found in other class I EPEC but not in enterotoxigenic or meningitic strains. The 50-70-MDa EAF plasmid seems neces- sary for full expression of pathogenicity in EPEC that exhibit Hep-2 adhesiveness. EPEC isolates of certain other, less common, 0 serogroups (044, 086, and 0114) are rarely Hep-2 adhesive. These EPEC, designated class II, possess distinct 50-70 MDa plasmids lacking EAF genes. Diarrhea was caused by 108 or 1010 organisms of an 0114:H2 class II EPEC …

Two Views Of Sex Differences In Socialization, Patricia Draper
Two Views Of Sex Differences In Socialization, Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The literature on the socialization of human sex differences is likely to remind many students of the parable about the blind men who were grouped around an elephant, each trying to describe to the others what the elephant was like. Several traditions of research in the social sciences have been involved in the study of why the sexes are different. One that emphasizes deliberate sex role training of children owes most of its insights to learning theory and developmental psychology. It regards sex role socialization as the result of interplay between the environmental experience and the child's active learning and …
Compatibility Of Intercropping With Mechanized Agriculture: Effects Of Strip Intercropping Of Pinto Beans And Sweet Corn On Insect Abundance In Colorado, J. L. Capinera, Thomas J. Weissling, E. E. Schweizer
Compatibility Of Intercropping With Mechanized Agriculture: Effects Of Strip Intercropping Of Pinto Beans And Sweet Corn On Insect Abundance In Colorado, J. L. Capinera, Thomas J. Weissling, E. E. Schweizer
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The potential for management of insect pest densities by regulation of crop diversity through intercropping was examined in sweet corn and pinto beans. Insect abundance was monitored in corn and beans in alternating multiple-row patterns of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 rows. Insect responses to intercropping treatments were variable, with positive, negative, and neutral responses observed, depending on species of insect and crop. In some cases, insect abundance was affected by strip-intercropping widths of up to eight rows, suggesting that strip intercropping may be compatible with some types of mechanized agriculture.

Modification Of Sand Fly Biting Behavior By Leishmania Leads To Increased Parasite Transmission, Raymond Beach, Gabriel Kjilu, Johannis Leeuwenberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
To attempt rodent-sand fly-rodent transmission of Leishmania major, laboratory-reared Phlebotomus doboscqi were fed on L. major-infected mice and then refed on uninfected mice 21 days later. Flies which refed either probed 1–2 times and took a full blood meal in less than 10 minutes or probed 3 or more times and took little or no blood during a period of 15 minutes or more. When dissected, 7 of 8 flies which experienced difficulty in obtaining a blood meal had flagellates in their cibaria, an observation supporting the hypothesis that parasites in this part of the alimentary canal modify normal …

Interril Soil Erosion, Part I. Development Of Model Equations, John E. Gilley, D. A. Woolheiser, D, B. Mcwhorter
Interril Soil Erosion, Part I. Development Of Model Equations, John E. Gilley, D. A. Woolheiser, D, B. Mcwhorter
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Equations describing overland flow depth, rainfall induced soil detachment and sediment transport capacity on interrill areas were identified. The Darcy-Weisbach equation which included a parameter for predicting flow resistance caused by rainfall was used to calculate depth of overland flow. Soil detachment was determined from an equation incorporating raindrop induced, impact pressure estimates. The product of a soil transport factor, bottom shear stress and flow velocity was used to calculate sediment transport capacity. Nondimensional forms of the model equations were evaluated using existing experimental data.

Interril Soil Erosion, Part Ii. Testing And Use Of Model Equations, John E. Gilley, D. A. Woolhiser, D. B. Mcwhorter
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Laboratory measurements were made of interrill erosion as affected by varying overland flow discharge and slope slope steepness. Soil detachment and sediment transport capacity relations were then evaluated using experimentally obtained information.
The model equations were utilized to further characterize interrill soil erosion. The overland flow region over which the model equations are applicable for a disturbed Nunn clay loam soil was determined from laboratory tests and critical shear stress analyses. The influence of slope length on interrill erosion was also examined.

Soil Erosion From Tillage Systems Used In Soybean And Corn Residues, Elbert C. Dickey, David P. Shelton, Paul J. Jasa, Thomas Peterson
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Rainfall simulation techniques were used to compare soil losses from various tillage systems used on plots where corn and soybeans had been grown the previous season. The two year study was conducted on a silty clay loam soil with a 5% slope and on a silt loam soil with a 10% slope. Five tillage treatments, ranging from a moldboard plow system to no-till, were evaluated for each residue at each site. Tillage and planting operations were conducted up-and-down hill on replicated plots. Total soil loss following 63.5 mm of rainfall applied during a 60 min period averaged more than 40% …

The Ecology Of Foraging Behavior: Implications For Animal Learning And Memory, Alan Kamil, Herbert L. Roitblat
Avian Cognition Papers
In his recent Annual Review of Psychology article, Snowdon (1983) discussed the synthesis of ethology and comparative psychology. A similar synthesis of behavioral ecology and animal learning is beginning to take place. This article reviews developments in the behavioral ecology and ethology of foraging behavior relevant to psychological research on animal learning. The psychological literature shows that animals possess a wide range of learning abilities, including “simple” classical and operant conditioning; they acquire spatial, nonspatial, and temporal discriminations; they exhibit various forms of rule learning (e.g. matching-to-sample and learning set), and may even in certain senses learn language. Why does …
