Policy And Goals In The Private Sector, Rick Warhurst Apr 1987

Policy And Goals In The Private Sector, Rick Warhurst

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Today I am supposed to talk about policy and goals for predator management and control to enhance waterfowl production in the private sector. The private sector includes a wide array of interests. Each of you probably has a particular opinion. You have already observed some different thinking, some different languages, in reference to predator control from previous panel members. If you extrapolate that over the whole United States population, which would be the private sector, it would include a wide array of interests and thoughts.

Decoying Coyotes With Dogs, Gary J. Rowley, Delyle Rowley Apr 1987

Decoying Coyotes With Dogs, Gary J. Rowley, Delyle Rowley

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Decoy dogs, used in conjunction with a predator call or coyote howl, are an effective technique to reduce coyote depredation on domestic sheep ranges during the spring and summer when coyotes are highly territorial and aggressively protect their young and den area. Trained decoy dogs, when chased by coyotes, return to their owner bringing the coyotes into shooting range. The type of dogs used successfully for this work is discussed.

Politics, Prairie Dogs, And The Sportsman, John Sharps Apr 1987

Politics, Prairie Dogs, And The Sportsman, John Sharps

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

I would like to speak to you today about potential economic and biological values of prairie dogs. When I refer to prairie dogs throughout my talk, I'm referring only to the prairie dogs on the National Grasslands Systems in western South Dakota. Prairie dogs have great economic potential to sportsmen and the general public and also act as ecosystem regulators to grassland plant and animal communities, and as such, could enhance both potentials if managed differently.

Identification Of Chromosomes That Condition Dhurrin Content In Sorghum Seedlings, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins, R. Morris, B. E. Johnson Apr 1987

Identification Of Chromosomes That Condition Dhurrin Content In Sorghum Seedlings, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins, R. Morris, B. E. Johnson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Young plants of sorghum and sudangrass [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) may be toxic to livestock because of the presence of the cyanogenic glucoside, dhurrin [p-hydroxy-(S}-mandelonitrile-β-Dglucoside), in the forage. In the present study a set of 11 chromosomal reciprocal translocations in 'Combine 7078' grain sorghum, involving each of the 10 chromosome pairs of sorghum in at least two of the translocations, was used to determine which chromosomes carried genes conditioning dhurrin content of sorghum seedlings. Each translocation stock was crossed and backcrossed once to a low-dhurrin line of sudangrass. Backcross progenies and parental plants were started in the …

Inactivation Of Dry Enzymes And Viruses By Energetic Heavy Ions, M. P. R. Waligorski, Kim Sun Loh, Robert Katz Mar 1987

Inactivation Of Dry Enzymes And Viruses By Energetic Heavy Ions, M. P. R. Waligorski, Kim Sun Loh, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

A newly developed corrected formula for the radial distribution of dose (RDD) has been used to calculate cross sections for the inactivation of dry enzymes and viruses by heavy ions ranging from 42He to 4018 Ar of energies ca. 10 MeV/a.m.u., spanning a range of LET of ca. 5–2,000 Me V cm2 g–1. In comparison with earlier “point-target” calculations of Butts and Katz where a linear range-energy relationship for electrons (δ-rays) was used, and with “extended-target” calculations of Zhang, Dunn, and Katz, where a power range-energy law and an “uncorrected” RDD formula …

Predator Management To Increase Duck Nest Success, Harold A. Doty, Anthony J. Rondeau Mar 1987

Predator Management To Increase Duck Nest Success, Harold A. Doty, Anthony J. Rondeau

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Operational programs of seasonal predator management to increase duck production may be economically feasible. Mammalian predators of nesting ducks and their eggs were reduced in numbers on selected areas of west central Minnesota during the nesting seasons 1982-86. Where predators were removed, nest success averaged 30% while nest success on nearby untreated habitat was 10%.

Plagues Of The House Mouse In South Eastern Australia, Glen Saunders Mar 1987

Plagues Of The House Mouse In South Eastern Australia, Glen Saunders

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 12th (1986)

Plagues of the house mouse (Mus musculus) occur at irregular intervals throughout the agricultural regions of south-eastern Australia. This paper discusses these phenomena in terms of their impact on agricultural production, previous attempts to reduce damage and levels of infestation, and associated environmental implications. Consideration is also given to the accurate prediction of mouse plagues and the control strategies which need to be in place if effective management is to become a reality.

Yield Accumulation, Leaf Area Index, And Light Interception Of Smooth Bromegrass, R. K. Engel, Lowell E. Moser, James L. Stubbendieck, S. R. Lowry

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Smooth bromegrass (Bromus inemis Leyss.) is a cool-season grass used extensively in the midwestern USA for spring and fall grazing. Smooth bromegrass has limited production in this region during the summer. This study was conducted to document the growth characteristics and yield accumulation of smooth bromegrass under various levels of N fertilizer. Live yield (dry matter yield of living herbage), leaf area index (LAI), light interception (LI), and crop growth rate (CGR) were determined on an established stand of 'Lincoln' smooth bromegrass grown on a Sharpsburg silty clay loam (fine, montmorillonitic, mesic Typic Argiudolls) in eastern Nebraska. Zero, medium, …

Aspects Of Selection For Performance In Several Environments With Heterogeneous Variances, D. J. Garrick, L. Dale Van Vleck Feb 1987

Aspects Of Selection For Performance In Several Environments With Heterogeneous Variances, D. J. Garrick, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Dairy cattle evaluation schemes routinely assume homogeneous variance with respect to environment. Increasing evidence suggests the presence of systematic changes in variance components associated with mean level of performance. Best linear unbiased prediction procedures that account for heterogeneity are reviewed. The consequences of incorrectly assuming homogeneity for evaluation are demonstrated for a progeny test and an artificial breeding program that screens dams of sires from heterogeneous populations. Selection assuming homogeneity can be very efficient when heritability, and therefore accuracy of selection, is greatest in the more variable environment. Conversely, appreciable reduction in response results when heritability is greater in the …

Amino Sugars In The Glycoprotein Toxin From Bacillus Thuringiensis Subsp. Israelensis, Mary Ann Pfannenstiel, Ganapathy Muthukumar, Graham A. Couche, Kenneth W. Nickerson Feb 1987

Amino Sugars In The Glycoprotein Toxin From Bacillus Thuringiensis Subsp. Israelensis, Mary Ann Pfannenstiel, Ganapathy Muthukumar, Graham A. Couche, Kenneth W. Nickerson

Papers in Microbiology

The carbohydrate content of purified Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis crystal toxin was determined by six biochemical tests, column chromatography on an amino acid analyzer, and the binding of 11 fluorescent lectins. The crystals contained approximately 1.0% neutral sugars and 1.7% amino sugars. The anmino sugars consisted of 70% glucosamine and 30% galactosamine. No N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid) was detected. The presence of amino sugars was confirmed by the strong binding of fluorescent wheat germ agglutinin and the weak binding of fluorescent soybean agglutinin. These lectins recognize N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, respectively. The lectin-binding sites appeared evenly distributed among …

The Relationship Of Temperament To Tolerance Of Cold And Heat: Beyond “Cold Hands-Warm Heart”, Richard A. Dienstbier, Robert L. Laguardia, Noreen S. Wilcox

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Thermal regulation and peripheral arousal in episodes of emotion are dependent upon similar autonomic and hormonal processes. Thermal-tolerance measure were developed and validated in order to indirectly assess adrenergic (cold tolerance) and cholinergic (heat tolerance) responsivity. We hypothesized that cold tolerance would correlate with reduced emotionality (largely fear and anxiety) and depression, and with increased stimulus seeking and dispositions toward activity; those hypotheses were confirmed. Tentatively advanced hypotheses that heat tolerance would correlate with reduced depression and emotional states were not confirmed, but heat tolerance was positively associated with activity and (weakly) with some of the same dimensions of temperament …

Intsormil Annual Report 1987, John M. Yohe, Timothy T. Schilling

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

The Sorghum/Millet CRSP was initiated on July 1, 1979. This annual report covers the activities for program Year 8. Eight years of experience have reaffirmed the need for this type of research program aimed at relieving the constraints to improved sustainable sorghum/millet production in developing countries. The emphasis by the CRSP on development of collaborative linkages with national sorghum/millet research programs has been unique. Significant contributions have been made toward resolving constraint problems and enhancing the national program capability by strengthening its human resource base as well as the national institutional capability to conduct collaborative research. Thus, the CRSPs present …

The Influence of Cognitive Psychology on Testing

INTRODUCTION

Given the demands for higher levels of learning in our schools and the press for education in the skilled trades, the professions, and the sciences, we must develop more powerful and specific methods for assessing achievement. We need forms of assessment that educators can use to improve educational practice and to diagnose individual progress by monitoring the outcomes of learning and training. Compared to the well-developed technology for aptitude measurement and selection testing, however, the measurement of achievement and diagnosis of learning problems is underdeveloped. This is because the correlational models that support prediction are insufficient for the task …

The Influence of Cognitive Psychology on Testing

The problem of g, essentially , concerns two very fundamental questions: (1) Why are scores on various mental ability tests positively correlated? and (2) Why do people differ in performance on such tests?

SOME DEFINITIONS

To insure that we are talking the same language, we must review a few definitions. Clarity, explicitness, and avoidance of excess meaning or connotative overtones are virtues of a definition. Aside from these properties, a definition per se affords nothing to argue about. It has nothing to do with truth or reality; it is a formality needed for communication.

A mental ability test consists …

Chapfer2 Understanding The Drought Phenomenon: The Role Of Definitions, Donald A. Wilhite, Michael H. Glantz

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

The occurrence of widespread, severe drought in Africa, India, North America, China, the USSR, Australia, and western Europe has once again underscored the vulnerability of developed and developing societies to drought The occurrence of severe drought during 1982-83 is shown in Fig. 1. These recent droughts have emphasized the need for more research on the causes as well as the impacts of drought and the need for additional planning to help mitigate the possible worst effects of future droughts. Drought has been the subject of a great deal of systematic study, particularly reconstructions of drought history, computations of drought frequency, …

G87-838 Management Of Greenbugs In Sorghum (Revised May 1994), Robert J. Wright, Stephen D. Danielson, Zb Mayo Jan 1987

G87-838 Management Of Greenbugs In Sorghum (Revised May 1994), Robert J. Wright, Stephen D. Danielson, Zb Mayo

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes the identification, biology and management options for greenbugs in Nebraska sorghum.

The greenbug is the most important insect pest of grain and forage sorghums in Nebraska. Although numbers fluctuate from year to year, greenbugs are a limiting factor to sorghum yield in most years. Their management is complicated by the fact that greenbugs have been able to evolve populations capable of overcoming plant resistance and organophosphate insecticides, so best management practices continue to change over time.

Another common aphid found in sorghum is the corn leaf aphid. Corn leaf aphids are often mistaken for greenbugs; however, they …

Follicle Stimulating Hormone, Luteinizing Hormone And Testicular Leydig Cell Responses To Estradiol Immunization In Ile-De-France Rams, B. D. Schanbacher, J. Pelletier, M. T. Hochereau-De Reviers Jan 1987

Follicle Stimulating Hormone, Luteinizing Hormone And Testicular Leydig Cell Responses To Estradiol Immunization In Ile-De-France Rams, B. D. Schanbacher, J. Pelletier, M. T. Hochereau-De Reviers

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Active immunization of Ile-de-France rams against estradiol (E2) resulted in the production of E2-neutralizing antibodies and an elevation in the plasma concentrations of FSH, LH, and testosterone. The presence of E2 antibodies did not affect the testosterone metabolic clearance rate, indicating that the immunization-mediated 10-fold increase in plasma testosterone was the result of a 10-fold increase in testicular testosterone production. Testis weights, as well as nuclear and cytoplasmic volumes of individual peritubular and perivascular Leydig cells, were greater in E2-immunized rams than in albuminimmunized controls. Leydig cell numbers were not affected by treatment. …

G87-834 Leafy Spurge (Revised February 1989), R.S. Moomaw, Alex Martin, R.N. Stougaard

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Identification and control of leafy spurge, a noxious weed established in about three-fourths of Nebraska's counties, is discussed here.

Leafy spurge, (Euphorbia esula L.) introduced to the United States from Eurasia in 1827, has become a troublesome weed in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Nebraska.

Leafy spurge is found in about three-fourths of Nebraska's counties. It is most common in the state's northern and eastern areas. Leafy spurge is found primarily on untilled land such as pastures, range, roadsides, woodlands and farmsteads. Leafy spurge is a noxious weed according to the Nebraska Seed Law and the Nebraska …
