Nitrogen Mineralization And Denitrification In Lake Michigan Sediment, Wayne S. Garder, Thomas F. Nalepa, John M. Malczyk Jan 1987

Nitrogen Mineralization And Denitrification In Lake Michigan Sediment, Wayne S. Garder, Thomas F. Nalepa, John M. Malczyk

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Organic nitrogen mineralization mechanisms, fluxes, and fates in Lake Michigan sediments were examined by measuring accumulation rates of inorganic nitrogen in laboratory microcosms. Neither ammonium nor nitrate increased substantially in flow-cell or slurry microcosms of offshore, silty sediments. In experiments with gastight chambers containing "intact" offshore, silty sediment cores (sampled at 45- and 100-m water depths), the total fluxes of nitrogen (NH4+, N03-, and N2) across the sediment-water interface ranged from 14 to 51 µg-atoms N m-2 h-1. Nitrogen gas accounted for 93-98% of the total inorganic nitrogen flux from the …

Bioconcentration Of Heavy Metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, And Zn) In The Missouri River Near Sioux City, Iowa, Robert Conklin, Suzie Galles, Edward Shane, Rod Tondreau Jan 1987

Bioconcentration Of Heavy Metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, And Zn) In The Missouri River Near Sioux City, Iowa, Robert Conklin, Suzie Galles, Edward Shane, Rod Tondreau

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The concentrations of the heavy metals- copper, chromium, lead, zinc- in the biota of the Missouri River were measured at a control site upstream of Sioux City and at a site downstream of the city. Bioconcentration factors for each of the metals were calculated for fish, periphyton, and invertebrates, and the concentrations of metals in the river sediments were measured.

Concentrations of the same metals were measured in the sediment, water, periphyton, invertebrates, zooplankton, and fish of Snyder's Bend Lake. Bioconcentration factors were calculated for each of the biological communities and were found to be very similar to those found …

G87-845 Electrical Systems For Agricultural Buildings (Recommended Practices), Gerald R. Bodman, Laverne E. Stetson, Jack L. Schinstock

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes some of the specialized wiring practices and equipment required in agricultural buildings.

During June 1982, electrical system failures resulted in animal losses in excess of $100,000 on three Nebraska swine farms. In 1983, more than $45,000 worth of feeder pigs were electrocuted on another Nebraska farm. Dairy and beef animals also have been electrocuted--as have producers. A survey of more than 400 Nebraska farms revealed that over 50 percent have problems due to poor on-farm wiring. A more recent survey of 14 farms revealed none with 100 percent properly wired buildings. Many had conditions which were serious …

1. Introduction: The Implications Of Cognitive Psychology For Testing, Royce R. Ronning, Jane C. Conoley, John G. Glover Jan 1987

1. Introduction: The Implications Of Cognitive Psychology For Testing, Royce R. Ronning, Jane C. Conoley, John G. Glover

The Influence of Cognitive Psychology on Testing

The 1985 Buros-Nebraska Symposium was developed to address the broad issue of the influence of cognitive psychology on testing and measurement. In the planning process, four topics were formulated that we asked contributors to address. The following four issues provided the focus for the Symposium and hence for the present volume. We explore:

1. Cognitive psychology as a basis for questioning some of our assumptions about the nature of mental abilities;
2. The influence of cognitive psychology on test development;
3. Cognitive psychology influences on test validity;
4. Cognitive psychology as a means to provide a linkage between testing and …

Groundwater Quality And Policy Options In Nebraska, Mary E. Exner, Roy F. Spalding Jan 1987

Groundwater Quality And Policy Options In Nebraska, Mary E. Exner, Roy F. Spalding

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

Potential contaminants and the occurrence of groundwater contamination in Nebraska are discussed. An overview of Nebraska's policy response to groundwater quality reveals that the policy has been fragmentary and generally reactive. Although a comprehensive groundwater quality protection strategy is needed if the groundwater is to be protected from potential point and nonpoint sources of contamination, it must recognize the site-specific nature of most groundwater contamination. The Nebraska Chemigation Act and the Petroleum Products and Hazardous Substances Storage and Handling Act passed in 1986 were the first comprehensive legislation addressing prevention of point source contamination. Proactive policies for the prevention of …

A Recapitulation Of The Genetics And Evolution Of Insect Biotypes On Cereals: The Case Study Of The Hessian Fly, C. Kudagamade, John E. Foster, Jaime E. Araya Jan 1987

A Recapitulation Of The Genetics And Evolution Of Insect Biotypes On Cereals: The Case Study Of The Hessian Fly, C. Kudagamade, John E. Foster, Jaime E. Araya

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The host-specific nature of the Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say) and its genetic interaction with the wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell) plant results in the evolution of virulent biotypes. However, carefully planned deployment of resistant genes can delay the evolution of biotypes and maximize the stability of resistant genes. The usefulness of the Hessian fly-wheat interaction model in breeding for insect resistance in rice is discussed.

Comparative Frontier Scoial Life: Western Saloons And Argentine Pulperias, Richard W. Slatta

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In sparsely populated cattle frontier regions of the nineteenth century, only a limited number of social institutions functioned. The ranch, as a central socioeconomic complex, took on added importance. Ranch owners often took upon themselves political and legal powers exercised by civic officials in more settled areas. In the cattle regions of the American West and the pampas of Argentina, taverns were important local institutions. A comparison of social activities in the western saloon and the Argentine pulperi'a-a combination country store and tavern-reveals strong similarities. As frontier institutions, they served analogous multiple functions, and their cowboy and gaucho patrons behaved …

Testing Sociobiological Hypotheses Ethnographically, Patricia Draper Jan 1987

Testing Sociobiological Hypotheses Ethnographically, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Satisfactory tests of sociobiological theory using data on humans suffer from many problems, many of which are cogently argued by Kitcher. Other obstacles derive from the fact that cultural anthropology itself is undergoing a paradigm shift, in which people are no longer considered to be influenced by the normative environment with a high degree of predictability. Information about human behavior guided by this new set of assumptions is far more likely to yield the type of data necessary to test sociobiological ideas. Once the construct of culture is abandoned (or at least not assumed to have much power for predicting …

Distribution Archaeology: Survey, Mapping, And Analysis Of Surface Archaeological Materials In The Green River Basin, Wyoming, James I. Ebert, Signa Larralde, Luann Wandsnider Jan 1987

Distribution Archaeology: Survey, Mapping, And Analysis Of Surface Archaeological Materials In The Green River Basin, Wyoming, James I. Ebert, Signa Larralde, Luann Wandsnider

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Archaeology in America today is in a quandary. This is especially true for that portion of the profession responsible for investigating and managing the surface archaeology of large tracts of land. The quandary concerns how to maximize the amount of information about the archaeology of an area given finite budgets. Predictive modeling, a technique for projecting knowledge derived from a sample to its universe, has been proposed as one response to this dilemma. We shall present another response, distributional archaeology, which is designed to collect quality information about the archaeological record and is consistent with the formation and structure of …

Relationships Between Rate Of Growth, Catheptic Enzymes And Meat Palatability In Young Bulls, Chris R. Calkins, S. C. Seideman, J. D. Crouse

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Relationships between rate of growth, endogenous muscle enzymes and meat palatability were investigated in 48 young (13 mo) Angus bulls. After backgrounding for 4 mo, bulls were placed on a high-energy diet for 30 d, at which time they were assigned randomly to one of three feeding treatments: 1) high energy (ad libitum-fed), 2) maintenance energy (restriction-fed to maintain body weight) or 3) sub-maintenance energy (restriction-fed to lose .68 kg/d). Cattle were slaughtered after 30 or 60 d on trial. Cathepsins B and H and β-glucuronidase in the longissimus muscle were quantitated at slaughter. Serum hydroxyproline, longissimus muscle collagen, taste-panel …

First Report Of A Parasitic Fly From A Red Imported Fire Ant Alate Female, Daniel P. Wojcik, D. P. Jouvenaz, C. S. Lofgren Jan 1987

First Report Of A Parasitic Fly From A Red Imported Fire Ant Alate Female, Daniel P. Wojcik, D. P. Jouvenaz, C. S. Lofgren

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

A number of phorid flies are known to parasitize various life stages of bees and wasps, including reproductives (Kistner 1982). Several genera of phorids are known or assumed to be parasitic on worker ants but not on reproductives (Borgmeier 1963; Borgmeier and Prado 1975). Williams (1980) summarized the known data on phorids attacking and parasitizing fire ants sens. str., Solenopsis (Solenopsis) spp., in South America. To date, only one species is definitely known to parasitize fire ant workers, although other species are assumed to be parasitic on fire ants (Williams 1980). None of these species are present in the …

A Review Of Perlinella Banks (Plecoptera: Perlidae), Boris C. Kondratieff, Ralph F. Kirchner, Kenneth W. Stewart

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

The Nearctic stonefly genus Perlinella Banks is reviewed; three valid species are recognized. Perlinella drymo (Newman) and Perlinella ephyre (Newman) are widespread east of the Rocky Mountains, whereas Perlin ella zwicki, n. sp. (P. jumipennis of Zwick 1971), is restricted to the southeastern Coastal Plain. Perlinella jumipennis (Walsh) is replaced as a synonym of Perlinella ephyre. Keys for adults and nymphs are provided, and the nymph of P. zwicki is described for the first time. Male drumming calls of Perlin della drymo and Perlinella ephyre are described.

G87-862 Holding Wet Corn With Aeration (Revised July 1995), David D. Jones, Robert D. Grisso Jan 1987

G87-862 Holding Wet Corn With Aeration (Revised July 1995), David D. Jones, Robert D. Grisso

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses aeration recommendations and corn moisture level limitations for holding wet corn under Nebraska conditions.

Corn is a perishable commodity with a limited shelf life that depends on the moisture content and temperature of the corn. `Shelf life' is the length of time good quality, aerated shelled corn can be stored before losing one-half percent of dry matter. With this amount of dry matter decomposition, it is assumed that the corn loses some quality, but maintains its market grade.

Conservation Tillage: Perceived And Actual Use, Elbert C. Dickey, Paul J. Jasa, Bryn J. Dolesh, Lisa A. Brown, S. Kay Rockwell

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

A mail survey of farmers in Nebraska showed their perceived use of conservation tillage was about 55%. However, using the 30% residue cover criterion that the Conservation Tillage Information Center uses to define conservation tillage, a field survey of seven counties in 1984 showed that actual use of conservation tillage was less than 5%. Fewer than 20% of the producers surveyed had more than 20% residue cover remaining after tillage and planting. The field survey also showed disk tillage systems were used by almost 70% of the producers. The moldboard plow was used by only 15% of the producers, thus …

The Binding Of Host-Selective Toxin Analogs To Mitochondria From Normal And 'Texas' Male Sterile Cytoplasm Maize, Kurt A. Frantzen, J. M. Daly, Herman W. Knoche Jan 1987

The Binding Of Host-Selective Toxin Analogs To Mitochondria From Normal And 'Texas' Male Sterile Cytoplasm Maize, Kurt A. Frantzen, J. M. Daly, Herman W. Knoche

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Tritium-labeled toxin analogs were prepared by reduction with NaB3H4 of either the toxin from Helminthosporium maydis race T or a toxin component from Phyllosticta maydis. These reduced analogs had high radiochemical specific activities, high biological activities, and plant specificities identical to the native toxins. A filtration assay was developed to test the binding of these labeled analogs to isolated- mitochondria. Binding was not energy dependent nor was there measurable matrical uptake. The analogs were shown to be lipophilic, a characteristic which gave rise to considerable nondisplaceable binding. Under conditions limiting nondisplaceable binding, -the displaceable binding was …
