G90-1007 Pesticide Management And Safety On Home Grounds, John C. Fech, Larry D. Schulze

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Pesticides can be valuable tools in controlling lawn and garden pests. They must be used according to the label, with regard for the safety of people and animals.

Pest infestations often develop in lawns or gardens, damage lawns and ornamentals, and reduce the attractiveness of the home setting. When an infestation occurs, gardeners can reach a decision in pest management by answering the following questions: What is the pest? Is the pest causing unacceptable damage? Are controls needed? What pest control method(s) should be used?

There are several methods of pest control. The main methods of pest control and some …

13.4.4. Habitat Management For Molting Waterfowl, James K. Ringelman Jan 1990

13.4.4. Habitat Management For Molting Waterfowl, James K. Ringelman

Waterfowl Management Handbook

The ecology, behavior, and life history strategies of waterfowl are inseparably linked to that unique avian attribute, feathers. Waterfowl rely on flight capabilities to migrate, to fully exploit the resources of wetland and upland communities, and to escape life-threatening events. The insulation provided by contour and down feathers allows waterfowl to use a wide range of habitats and protects them from temperature extremes. Plumage is important not only for species recognition during courtship, but also for cryptic coloration of females during incubation. However, feathers become worn and must be periodically replaced. The process of feather renewal, or molt, is a …

13.1.2 Life History Traits And Management Of The Gadwall, James K. Ringelman Jan 1990

13.1.2 Life History Traits And Management Of The Gadwall, James K. Ringelman

Waterfowl Management Handbook

The gadwall is widely distributed throughout the western two-thirds of North America. Although its primary breeding habitat is in the drought-prone and degraded waterfowl habitats of the northern Great Plains, its continental population has remained relatively stable while those of most other dabbling ducks have declined. Some unique life history traits may in part be responsible for the resilience of gadwall populations. These unique attributes, which are important for gadwall management, are the subject of this leaflet. Readers interested in general references on gadwall biology and natural history are referred to Bellrose (1980) or Palmer (1976).

Steinernematid Nematode Drenches For Control Of Fire Ants In Florida, Donald P. Jouvenaz, Clifford S. Lofgren, Richard W. Miller Jan 1990

Steinernematid Nematode Drenches For Control Of Fire Ants In Florida, Donald P. Jouvenaz, Clifford S. Lofgren, Richard W. Miller

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Recent developments in low-cost, large-scale production of entomogenous nematodes of the genera Steinernema and Heterorhabditis (Bedding 1984) have facilitated large- scale field testing against various soil-infesting insect pests (Kaya 1985, Poinar 1986), with good potential for commercial control in some applications. Early research by Poole (1976) and Quattlebaum (1980) showed promise that entomogenous nematodes have potential for controlling fire ants, Solenopsis spp. Furthemore, these nematodes have the ability to invade adult insects, and thus potential to kill fire ant queens. Agents which only kill worker ants do not effectively eliminate colonies, although they may temporarily reduce their size.

Primary Sequence Of The Escherichia Coli Fadba Operon, Encoding The Fatty Acid-Oxidizing Multienzyme Complex, Indicates A High Degree Of Homology To Eucaryotic Enzymes, Concetta C. Dirusso Jan 1990

Primary Sequence Of The Escherichia Coli Fadba Operon, Encoding The Fatty Acid-Oxidizing Multienzyme Complex, Indicates A High Degree Of Homology To Eucaryotic Enzymes, Concetta C. Dirusso

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

In Escherichia coli at least five enzyme activities required for the beta-oxidation of fatty acids are associated with a multienzyme complex composed of two subunits in α2β2 conformation (A. Pramanik et al., J. Bacteriol. 137:469-473, 1979). In the present work, the DNA sequence of the genes encoding these two subunits, fadB and fadA, has been determined. The direction of transcription was from fadB to fadA rather than from fadA to fadB, as suggested previously (S. K. Spratt et al., J. Bacteriol. 158:535-542, 1984). Only 10 nucleotides separated the coding sequences for the two peptides, confirming …

Enzymatic And Nonenzymatic Mechanisms For Ferric Leghemoglobin Reduction In Legume Root Nodules, Manuel Becana, Robert V. Klucas

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Evidence is presented for the operation in nodules of at least four systems for restoring functional ferrous leghemoglobin (Lb2+) from its inactive, ferric form. (i) Reduction of ferric leghemoglobin (Lb3+) by a reductase. The enzyme is a flavoprotein of 100 kDa with two equally sized subunits and exhibits a Km of 9 µM for soybean Lb3+ component a and a K. of 51 µM for NADH. NADPH is only 30% (initial velocities) as effective as NADH. Lb3+ reductase converts 215 nmol of Lb3+to Lb2+ •CO (or Lb2+ •O2 …

Quantification Of Spermatozoa In The Sperm-Storage Tubules Of Turkey Hens And The Relation To Sperm Numbers In The Perivitelline Layer Of Eggs, J. P. Brillard, M. R. Bakst Jan 1990

Quantification Of Spermatozoa In The Sperm-Storage Tubules Of Turkey Hens And The Relation To Sperm Numbers In The Perivitelline Layer Of Eggs, J. P. Brillard, M. R. Bakst

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to determine the number of spermatozoa residing in the oviduct sperm-storage tubules (SST) and the relationship between these numbers and the number of spermatozoa embedded in the perivitelline layer of oviductal eggs after a single insemination of 200 X 104 spermatozoa. The SST of hens inseminated within one week before the expected onset of egg production were filled faster (4 h vs. 2 days) and possessed more spermatozoa (4.1 vs. 2.0 X 106) than the SST of hens inseminated after the onset of egg production. Furthermore, for hens in egg production, significantly fewer …

Ectoparasites Of Ring-Necked Pheasants In Nebraska, William R. Payne, David W. Oates, Glen E. Dappen

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

In 1971, 1983 and 1984, ectoparasites were identified on 61 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) from Nebraska. Birds were collected throughout the state from 11 of 93 counties. Four species of chewing lice (Mallophaga) were collected: Lipeurus maculosus, Goniodes colchici, Lagopoecus coichicus and Amyrsidea megalosoma. One species of analgid mite, Megninia sp. was collected. Apparently, this species is new and undescribed. The four mallophagan species have not been reported from Nebraska.

Environmental Influences On Soil Macroarthropod Behavior In Agricultural Systems, Michael G. Villani, Robert J. Wright Jan 1990

Environmental Influences On Soil Macroarthropod Behavior In Agricultural Systems, Michael G. Villani, Robert J. Wright

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Many basic and applied studies in insect ecology have focused on the proximate and ultimate responses of insect populations to their physical and chemical environment (2, 15, 21, 27, 32, 74, 82, 111, 112). From an economic perspective, macro- and microclimatic factors can influence the stress that insect populations inflict on plants and the efficacy of management tactics. For above-ground insects, the mechanisms of behavioral response to environmental factors are often observable, if not always apparent to the researcher. However, this is not typically the situation with soil insects. As a result, field studies of soil insects often quantify only …
