Modification Of The Effect Of Bacillus Thuringiensis On Sunflower Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) By Dietary Phenols, Gary J. Brewer, Marc D. Anderson
Modification Of The Effect Of Bacillus Thuringiensis On Sunflower Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) By Dietary Phenols, Gary J. Brewer, Marc D. Anderson
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The sunflower moth, Homoeosoma electellum (Hulst), a major pest of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), is susceptible to Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, but field control has been inconsistent. Our study was done to determine whether phenolics in damaged sunflower tissue are in a conjugated or free form and whether they influence the toxicity of B. thuringiensis to the sunflower moth. Larvae fed diets containing B. thuringiensis had reduced survival and growth. The LD50 of B. thuringiensis was 52 international units of potency per gram of diet. Phenolic acids are general biocides. They were found in sunflower hybrids largely in the free …

Concentrations Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I In Blood And Ovarian Follicular Fluid Of Cattle Selected For Twins, S. E. Echternkamp, L. J. Spicer, K. E. Gregory, S. F. Canning, J. M. Hammond
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Recent studies have implicated insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) as an intraovarian regulator of follicular growth and differentiation. Therefore, we investigated the possibility that cattle selected for twin births may have increased concentrations of IGF-I within the ovarian follicle and(or) in peripheral blood. The estrous cycles of 14 cows with histories of producing twins and 12 control monotocous cows were synchronized with 35 mg of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α). Blood and follicular fluid were collected 48-50 h post-administration of PGF2α. (follicular phase of the estrous cycle). Concentrations of IGF-I were measured by RJA after acid-ethanol treatment …

Rationality As A Goal Of Education, David Moshman
Rationality As A Goal Of Education, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Abstract Those who believe education should involve more than learning facts often stress either (a) development or (b) thinking skills. A focus on development as a goal of education typically entails a conception of knowledge as organismic, holistic, and internally generated. In contrast, thinking skills programs commonly assume a mechanistic, reductionist perspective in which good thinking consists of some finite number of directly teachable skills. A conception of rationality as a goal of education is proposed that incorporates the complementary strengths and avoids the limitations of the developmental and thinking skills approaches. Rationality is defined as the self-reflective, intentional, and …
Estimating Nest Success: When Mayfield Wins, Douglas H. Johnson, Terry L. Shaffer
Estimating Nest Success: When Mayfield Wins, Douglas H. Johnson, Terry L. Shaffer
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The Apparent estimator of nest success may be severely biased because unsuccessful nests are less likely to be found than are successful nests. The Mayfield estimator is a preferred alternative. The situation is somewhat different for nests in colonies or on islands because of greater visibility of nests, higher synchrony of nesting, and often higher hatch rates than dispersed mainland nests. Also, destruction is more likely to occur catastrophically, which violates an assumption of the Mayfield method that the mortality rate is constant. By simulation we investigated the performance of the Apparent and Mayfield estimators under a variety of circumstances. …

Degradation Of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Capsid Protein During Leaf Senescence, Myron K. Brakke, Rose N. Skopp, L. C. Lane
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Wheat streak mosaic virus capsid protein degraded in vivo by proteolysis as leaves senesced. The capsid protein of virus purified from young systemically infected leaves had an apparent size or 45 kDa in 12% sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels with minor amounts of 43, 42, 33, and 3E kDa proteins. The proportion of smaller proteins increased with the age of the leaf. In some virus preparations only 3 1 kDa capsid protein was detected. In vitro proteolysis of virions with 45 kDa protein produced virions with 31 kDa protein. Virions with 31 kDa capsid protein sedimented slightly more slowly than those …
Identification Of Single Meloidogyne Juveniles By Polymerase Chain Reaction Amplification Of Mitochondrial Dna, T. S. Harris, L. J. Sandall, Thomas O. Powers
Identification Of Single Meloidogyne Juveniles By Polymerase Chain Reaction Amplification Of Mitochondrial Dna, T. S. Harris, L. J. Sandall, Thomas O. Powers
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify a specific 1.8-kb sequence of mitochondrial DNA from single juveniles and eggs from 17 populations of Meloidogyne incognita, M. hapla, M. javanica, and M. arenaria. Approximately 2 μg amplified product were produced per reaction. Restriction digestion of the amplified product with HinfI permitted discrimination of clonal lineages of the four species. Meloidogyne javanica, however, could not be separated from M. hapla by the enzymes used in these experiments. Various amplification conditions and nematode lysis procedures were examined in order to optimize the speed and quality of …

Efficacy Of A Cell Extract From Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) Pleuropneumoniae Serotype 1 Against Disease In Swine, P. J. Fedorka-Cray, M.J. Huether, D.L. Stine, G. A. Anderson
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
We partially characterized a cell extract (CE) from Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 1 and used the CE to test the efficacy of secreted proteins against disease. Secreted products from 4-h culture supernatants were precipitated with 20% polyethylene glycol. Analysis of the CE indicated the presence of protein, endotoxin, and carbohydrate. Hemolytic activity to bovine erythrocytes and cytotoxic activity to porcine mononuclear leukocytes was also demonstrated. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of the CE from a 4-h culture showed a major band at 110 kilodaltons (kDa), while a CE of a 26-h culture indicated the presence of a number of additional …

Evaluation Of Seeding Rates Of Au Triumph And Endophyte-Infected Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, D. M. Ball
Evaluation Of Seeding Rates Of Au Triumph And Endophyte-Infected Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, D. M. Ball
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Increased difficulty in stand establishment of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) has been reported by producers since the introduction of endophyte (Acremonium coenophialum Morgan Jones and Gams)-free tall fescue seed into the market place. This has encouraged the use of higher seeding rates for endophyte-free tall fescue without scientific basis. The objective of this study was to determine whether ‘AU Triumph’, and endophyte-free cultivar, and endophyte-infected ‘Kentucky 31’ differ in minimum seeding rates for successful establishment. Experiments were established at two locations in each of two years, using a randomized complete block with four replications. Soils at the two locations …

Heritability Of Root Characteristics Affecting Mineral Uptake In Tall Fescue, J. H. Edwards, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, R. C. Kingery
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Modification of plant roots can potentially increase the area. of adaptation of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Limited information is available on the heritability of root diameter and root volume in tall fescue. A greenhouse experiment was conducted with'50 random 'Kentucky 31' (Ky-31) tall fescue parents and their progeny grown in aerated nutrient solution during four separate time intervals. Measurements of root volume, root diameter, shoot Mg concentration, and shoot K/(Mg + Ca) ratio were made six weeks after clonal material was transplanted in nutrient solution. Heritability estimates for root volume, root diameter, shoot Mg concentration, and shoot K/(Mg …
