Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Neosho Madtom Determined To Be Threatened
Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Neosho Madtom Determined To Be Threatened
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) determines a fish, the Neosho madtom (Noturusplocidus), to be a threatened species under the authority of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (Act), as amended. The madlom is currently known from the Neosho River (Grand Riverin Oklahoma) drainage: in the Neosho, Cottonwood, and Spring Rivers in southeastern Kansas, southwestern Missouri, and northeastern Oklahoma. Habitat destruction andmodification, principally due to impoundments, dredging activities, and increased water demands, have decreased the distribution and abundance of the species and isolated it into three populations. This rule identifies the taxon as one in need of conservation, …

Chemical Immobilization Of Red Foxes (Vulpes Vulpes), Terry J. Kreeger, Ulysses S. Seal, John R. Tester
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) were immobilized with one of the following drug combinations: ketamine/xylazine (n = 22), ketamine/ promazine (n = 35), ketamine/midazolam (n = 13), or tiletamine/zolazepam (n = 22). Foxes given ketamine/xylazine had the shortest induction and longest recovery times relative to other drug combinations, whereas foxes given ketamine/midazolam had the longest induction times. Recommended doses for the various combinations are given. Foxes given ketamine/xylazine were given either 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 mg/kg yohimbine, or saline 40 mm after anesthetic induction. Administration of yohimbine significantly shortened arousal and recovery times relative to control values (P < 0.001).

Determining Matrilines By Antibody Response To Exotic Antigens, Gregory E. Glass, James E. Childs, James W. Leduc, Sandra D. Cassard, Albert D. Donnenberg
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
The antibody responses of female Microtuspennsylvanicus inoculated with a series of antigens not normally encountered under field conditions were examined, and the kinetics of maternally acquired antibody loss in their offspring were determined. The initial antibody response in adults was rapid, peaking in 4-9 weeks, and long-lasting, with a half life of 4-5 months. Antibody levels in females were unaffected by parity, and more than one antigen could be given without affecting circulating-antibody titers. Antibody titers could be enhanced with additional inoculations. Maternal antibody in offspring increased until weaning at 3 weeks then declined exponentially. Minimal detectable titers were reached …
The Enigma Of Drought: Management And Policy Issues For The 1990s, Donald A. Wilhite
The Enigma Of Drought: Management And Policy Issues For The 1990s, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Drought affects more people than any other hazard, in both developed and developing countries, yet few governments have taken steps to prepare for it. This situation stems partly from the complex nature of drought, which affects various sectors of society in different ways, and partly from an inability or unwillingness of governments to accept drought as a normal part of climate, not as an extreme random event. Scientific and policy communities have become increasingly concerned about the inability of governments to respond to drought in an effective and timely manner, and some have called for improved drought planning and management. …

9 Drought, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Drought is a normal feature of climate. Although scientists disagree on what constitutes a drought (Wilhite and Glantz, 1985: 111), it represents a common experience that, in a sense, binds certain regions together (e.g., the Great Plains). During the past century, the united states has been plagued by numerous major drought episodes (e.g., 1890s, 1930s) and innumerable dry spells. In fact, it is unusual for drought not to occur somewhere in the united states each year. Recent short-term droughts that have resulted in substantial damage include the drought and heat wave of 1980 in the southwestern, southern, and central plains, …

Telomere Structure In Euplotes Crassus: Characterization Of Dna-Protein Interactions And Isolation Of A Telomere-Binding Protein, Carolyn M. Price
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
The nucleoprotein structure of telomeres from Euplotes crassus was studied by using nuclease and chemical footprinting. The macronuclear telomeres were found to exist as DNA-protein complexes that are resistant to micrococcal nuclease digestion. Each complex encompassed 85 to 130 base pairs of macronuclear DNA and appeared to consist of two structural domains that are characterized by dissimilar DNA-protein interactions. Dimethyl sulfate footprinting demonstrated that very sequence-specific and salt-stable interactions occur in the most terminal region of each complex. DNase I footprinting indicated that DNA in the region 30 to 120 base-pairs from the 5' end lies on a protein surface; …

United States Department of Energy: Publications
A series of 23 intact core segments was obtained from two distinct deep subsurface geological formations, the Middendorf and the Cape Fear formations, underlying the southeastern coastal plain of South Carolina. The Middendorf formation in this region consists of permeable, saturated, sandy sediments; the Cape Fear formation consists mainly of less permeable sediments. The core segments were separated by vertical distances ranging from several centimeters to 48 m. Aerobic chemoheterotrophic bacteria were enumerated on a dilute medium, and populations ranged from 3.1 to 6.4 log CFU g of sediment-1 in the Middendorf cores and from below detection to 4.3 …
Paleoclimatic Implications Of The High Stand Of Lake Lahontan Derived From Models Of Evaporation And Lake Level, S Hostetler, Larry Benson
Paleoclimatic Implications Of The High Stand Of Lake Lahontan Derived From Models Of Evaporation And Lake Level, S Hostetler, Larry Benson
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Based on previous climate model simulations of a split of the polar jet stream during the late Pleistocene, we hypothesize that (1) 20-13.5 ka BP, season-toseason variation in the latitudinal maximum of the jet stream core led to enhanced wetness in the Great Basin, and (2) after 13.5 ka BP, northward movement of the jet stream resulted in increased aridity similar to today. We suggest that the enhanced effective wetness was due to increased precipitation combined with an energylimited reduction in evaporation rates that was caused by increased summer cloud cover. A physically based thermal evaporation model was used to …

Damage To North Carolina And Florida Highways By Red Imported Fire Ants, W. A. Banks, C. T. Adams, C. S. Lofgren
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
The increasing importance of the red and black imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren and S. richteri Forel as economic pests is documented in reviews (Lofgren 1986, Adams 1986) and bibliographic lists (Banks et al. 1978, Wojcik & Lofgren 1982, and Wojcik 1986). This report of damage by red imported fire ants (RIFA) to highways in North Carolina and Florida further emphasizes their pestiferous nature.

Back in the good old days, when the telephone business was simpler and Saturday night television was worth watching, I can remember Ted Knight the newsman (remember him on The Mary Tyler Moore Show?) looking off into some imagined horizon in the newsroom when asked how he happened to come to his current position. With head cocked upward and his hand clutching his right lapel, he'd start in his deepest, most pompous voice: “lt all started in a small, 5,000-watt radio station..." Around here it a!! started with a 12,000-line, decade-old Centrex system and a new hospital building going up …
13.2.12. Artificial Nest Structures For Canada Geese, I. J. Ball
13.2.12. Artificial Nest Structures For Canada Geese, I. J. Ball
Waterfowl Management Handbook
Under natural conditions, Canada geese are protected from predatory mammals by selecting nest sites on islands, muskrat lodges, cliffs, or snags, or nests made by ospreys or other motors. The limited availability of safe natural sites seems to hold many goose populations below limits set by other habitat factors. The use of artificial structures to provide safe nest sites for Canada geese in North America began more than 50 years ago; structures are now among the most widely used, and most successful, of goose management practices.
Structures are considered any artificial device, with the exception of earthen or rock islands, …
Distributions Of Genetic Markers In A Nebraska Population, Reena Roy, Karen Schmidt, Robert E. Gaensslen
Distributions Of Genetic Markers In A Nebraska Population, Reena Roy, Karen Schmidt, Robert E. Gaensslen
United States Public Health Resources
Seven genetic marker systems were analyzed from liquid blood and dried bloodstain specimens submitted to the Nebraska State Patrol Crime Laboratory from various law enforcement agencies throughout Nebraska. The phenotypic and genotypic frequencies for the ABO, Lewis, esterase D (ESD), pbosphoglucomutase (PGM), adenylate kinase (AK), adenosine deaminase (ADA), and haptoglobin (HP) systems were calculated. The results indicate that the phenotypic frequencies are generally in agreement with frequencies reported in other populations in the United States.

Raman Spectroscopy Of Synthetic Antimicrobial Frog Peptides Magainin 2a And Pgla, Robert W. Williams, Ruth Starman, Kenneth M. P. Taylor, Kenneth Gable, Troy Beeler, Michael Zasloff, David Covell
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Magainin and PGLa are 23- and 21-residue peptides isolated from the skin of the African clawed frog Xenopus lueuis. They protect the frog from infection and exhibit a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity in vitro. The mechanism of this activity involves the interaction of magainin with microbial membranes. We have measured the secondary structure and membrane-perturbing ability of these peptides to obtain information about this mechanism. Our results show that mgn2a forms a helix with an average length of less than 20 Å upon binding to liposomes. At high concentrations (50 mg/mL) mgn2a spontaneously solubilizes phosphatidylcholine liposomes at temperatures above the …
The Psychopath And The Definition Of "Mental Disease Or Defect" Under The Model Penal Code Test Of Insanity: A Question Of Psychology Or A Question Of Law?, Emily Campbell
Nebraska Law Review
The psychopath presents a number of issues for the legal system, in particular the question of criminal responsibility. Specifically, is psychopathy a condition which should relieve a criminal defendant of responsibility for his actions? Part II of this Comment describes the characteristics of psychopathy so the reader will have a better understanding of the type of individual in question. In addition, Part II presents the current psychiatric criteria for labeling an individual a psychopath. Part III of this Comment presents the prominent psychiatric view that psychopaths by virtue of their diagnosis should be exonerated from criminal liability. This view has …

G90-974 The Beaf Leaf Beetle In Soybeans (Revised September 1994), Thomas E. Hunt, J. F. Witkowski, Robert J. Wright, Keith J. Jarvi
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The identification and life cycle of the bean leaf beetle are discussed along with scouting techniques, economic thresholds, and cultural control tactics.
The bean leaf beetle is a common insect found in Nebraska soybean fields. The insect also feeds on peas, snap beans, and dry beans. Although present in alfalfa and sweet clover in the early spring before soybean emerges, the insect is not known to damage either legume.
Use integrated pest management (IPM) when planning how to reduce bean leaf beetle damage. Integrated pest management is a sustainable approach to managing pests by combining biological, cultural, physical, and chemical …
