An Ecological Risk Assessment Of Lead Shot Exposure In Non-Waterfowl Avian Species: Upland Game Birds And Raptors, Ronald J. Kendall, Thomas E. Lacher Jr., Christine Bunck, Bernard Daniel, Crystal Driver, Christian E. Grue, Frederick Leighton, William Stansley, Philip G. Watanabe, Molly Whitworth
An Ecological Risk Assessment Of Lead Shot Exposure In Non-Waterfowl Avian Species: Upland Game Birds And Raptors, Ronald J. Kendall, Thomas E. Lacher Jr., Christine Bunck, Bernard Daniel, Crystal Driver, Christian E. Grue, Frederick Leighton, William Stansley, Philip G. Watanabe, Molly Whitworth
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
There is increasing concern that birds in terrestrial ecosystems may be exposed to spent lead shot. Evidence exists that upland birds, particularly mourning doves (Zenaida macroura), ingest spent lead shot and that raptors ingest lead shot by consuming wounded game. Mortality, neurological dysfunction, immune suppression, and reproductive impairment are documented effects of exposure to lead in birds. An ecological risk assessment on the impact of lead shot exposure in upland birds was conducted and is presented in the context of the new United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Ecological Risk Assessment Paradigm. A considerable amount of spent lead shot …
Approximation Of Biodegradation Rate Constants For Monoaromatic Hydrocarbons (Btex) In Ground Water, Todd Weidemeier, Matthew Swanson, John Wilson, Donald Kampbell, Ross Miller, Jerry Hansen
Approximation Of Biodegradation Rate Constants For Monoaromatic Hydrocarbons (Btex) In Ground Water, Todd Weidemeier, Matthew Swanson, John Wilson, Donald Kampbell, Ross Miller, Jerry Hansen
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Two methods were used to approximate site-specific biodegradation rates of monoaromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes [BTEX]) dissolved in ground water. Both use data from monitoring wells and hydrologic properties of the aquifer to estimate a biodegradation rate constant that can be sued in ground water solute fate and transport models. The first method uses a biologically recalcitrant tracer in the ground water, associated with the hydrocarbon plume to normalize changes in concentration of BTEX under anaerobic conditions; attenuation of the tracer is attributed to dilution, sorption, and/or volatilization. Attenuation of BTEX in excess of the attenuation of the …

Observations On Bats At Badlands National Park, South Dakota, Michael A. Bogan, Jeffrey G. Osborne, Jennifer A. Clarke
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
During the summers of 1992 and 1993, we conducted a survey of bats at Badlands National Park, South Dakota. Using mist nets, we captured bats and recorded species, sex, age class, and reproductive condition for each individual netted. We recorded five species, Myotis ciliolabrnm (n = 198), M. thysanodes (29), M volans (13), Eptesicus foscus (91), and Plecotus tawnsendii (43), previously known from the park. In addition, we added four species, M lucifugus (18), M. septentrionalis (9), Lasionycteris noctivagans (1), and Lasiurns cinereus (3) to the confirmed fauna of the park. Most bats captured were male (76.3%) although maternity colonies …

Origin Of Bermuda's Clay-Rich Quaternary Paleosols And Their Paleoclimatic Significance, Stanley R. Herwitz, Daniel R. Muhs, Joseph M. Prospero, Shannon Mahan, Bruce Vaughn
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Saharan dust deposition on Bermuda during successive Quaternary glacial periods is consistent with patterns of general circulation models, which indicate that during glacial maxima the northeast summer trade winds were stronger than at present and reached latitudes higher than 30°N despite lower-than-present sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic.

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
The enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O91:H21 isolates B2F1 and H414-36/89 are virulent in an orally infected streptomycin-treated mouse model. Previous studies demonstrated that B2F1 and H414-36/89 grow to high levels in mucus isolated from the mouse small intestine and colon and that growth in smallintestinal mucus is related to virulence. We measured the levels of Shiga-like toxins (SLTs) SLT-IIvha and SLT-IIvhb produced by B2F1 after growth in Luria-Bertani (LB) broth supplemented with mouse intestinal mucus by assaying the cytotoxicity of culture supernatants on Vero cells. Culture supernatants from B2F1 grown in mouse intestinal mucus, but not EHEC strains that produce …

The results indicate that efficient, well managed swine enterprises can be profitable and competitive in a dynamic industry.
Comparison Of Two Roadside Survey Procedures For Dwarf Mistletoes On The Sawtooth National Forest, Idaho, Robert L. Mathiasen, James T. Hoffman, John C. Guyon, Linda L. Wadleigh
Comparison Of Two Roadside Survey Procedures For Dwarf Mistletoes On The Sawtooth National Forest, Idaho, Robert L. Mathiasen, James T. Hoffman, John C. Guyon, Linda L. Wadleigh
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Two roadside surveys were conducted for dwarf mistletoes parasitizing lodgepole pine and Douglas-fir on the Sawtooth National Forest, Idaho. One survey used variable-radius plots located less than 150 m from roads. The 2nd survey used variable-radius plots established at 200-m intervals along 1600-m transects run perpendicular to the same roads. Estimates of the incidence (percentage of trees infected and percentage of plots infested) and severity (average dwarf mistletoe rating) for both lodgepole pine and Douglas-fir dwarf mistletoes were not significantly different for the 2 survey methods. These findings are further evidence that roadside-plot surveys and transect-plot surveys conducted away from …

Characterization Of The Lymantria Dispar Nucleopolyhedrovirus 25k Fp Gene, David S. Bischoff, James M. Slavicek
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The Lymantria dispar nucleopolyhedrovirus (Ld/V/NPV) gene encoding the 25K FP protein has been cloned and sequenced. The 25KFP gene codes for a 217 amino acid protein with a predicted molecular mass of 24870 Da. Expression of the 25K FP protein in a rabbit reticulocyte system generated a 27 kDa protein, in close agreement with the molecular mass predicted from the nucleotide sequence. The gene is located between 40"3 and 40.8 map units on the viral genome. It is transcribed in a counterclockwise direction with respect to the circular map at late times during the infection cycle from a consensus baculovirus …

Scale Issues In Soil Moisture Modelling: Problems And Prospects, Rezaul Mahmood
Scale Issues In Soil Moisture Modelling: Problems And Prospects, Rezaul Mahmood
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Soil moisture storage is an important component of the hydrological cycle and plays a key role in land-surface-atmosphere interaction. The soil-moisture storage equation in this study considers precipitation as an input and soil moisture as a residual term for runoff and evapotranspiration. A number of models have been developed to estimate soil moisture storage and the components of the soil-moisture storage equation. A detailed discussion of the implication of the scale of application of these models reports that it is not possible to extrapolate processes and their estimates from the small to the large scale. It is also noted that …
Analytical Perspectives On A Protohistoric Cache Of Ceramic Jars From The Lower Colorado Desert, James Bayman, Richard Hevly, Boma Johnson, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard Ryan
Analytical Perspectives On A Protohistoric Cache Of Ceramic Jars From The Lower Colorado Desert, James Bayman, Richard Hevly, Boma Johnson, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard Ryan
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
A cache of hermetically sealed ceramic jars found in the Lower Colorado Desert was examined using chronometric dating, pollen and macrofossil extraction, design analysis, and water retention experimentation. The cache apparently dates to the protohistoric fifteenth through seventeenth centuries. Findings from these studies contribute to knowledge in four problem areas: (1) ceramic jar function and use-history; (2) storage technology and caching behavior; (3) ceramic dating and chronology; and (4) symbolic iconography. Biotic remains from inside the jars document their use for transporting a variety of riverine and desert plants, before they were finally filled with flowers and seeds, and placed …
Costs And Benefits Of Monogamy And Polygyny For Yanomamö Women, Raymond B. Hames
Costs And Benefits Of Monogamy And Polygyny For Yanomamö Women, Raymond B. Hames
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
In this paper I analyze some of the economic costs and benefits of monogamy and polygyny for Yanomamö women. The evolutionary ecological model of resource defense polygyny predicts that when female choice is operative females will choose those males who control resources that will maximize a female’s reproductive success. A female will choose a polygynous strategy (i.e., become a co-wife) if a currently married male has more resources to offer than other unmarried males or monogamous males. This model has been successfully used to predict polygynous mating in tribal societies where males are stratified in terms of their ownership or …
A Gene Correlate Of Geotaxis Near Adh (2-50.1) In Drosophila Melanogaster, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Jerry Hirsch
A Gene Correlate Of Geotaxis Near Adh (2-50.1) In Drosophila Melanogaster, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Jerry Hirsch
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
As part of a long-term study (38+ years) to identify genetic correlates of geotaxis in Drosophila melanogaster, the investigators report the results of allozyme-level analyses of 2 lines derived from hybridizing high- and low-selected lines that have evolved stable, extreme expressions of geotaxis. Allelic variation at Adh was associated with geotactic performance in 1 hybrid-derived line, but not in another, after 66 free-mating generations beyond the F2 generation. A second-chromosome gene correlate of geotaxis may lie within 1 map unit of Adh. Population genetic analyses suggest that there were different selection pressures on the hybrid-derived lines and …
Herland, By Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Michael R. Hill
Herland, By Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Herland is the first half of a witty, sociologically astute critique of life in the United States. This story concentrates ostensibly on three men-Van, Jeff, and Terry-who discover a small, uncharted country called Herland which, by force of an unusual accident of nature, has been governed and populated for two thousand years solely by women. Biological reproduction occurs miraculously by parthenogenesis (that is, without insemination). Charlotte Perkins Gilman exploits this contrived situation in order to contrast and compare the social features of a hypothetical woman-centered society to the harsh realities and crushing inequalities of everyday life found pervasively in male-dominated …

Timing Of First Sexual Intercourse: The Role Of Social Control, Social Learning, And Problem Behavior, Lisa J. Crockett, C. Raymond Bingham, Joanne S. Chopak, Judith R. Vicary
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Prior research has pointed to several distinct processes that may affect the timing of first intercourse among adolescents. In the present study, the role of six hypothesized processes was assessed in a sample of 289 rural adolescent boys and girls. Results support the importance of family socialization and problem behavior for both sexes, the role of biological factors for boys, and the role of social control processes for girls. Two other hypothesized influences--social class and poor psychosocial adjustment--were not supported in either gender. These results indicate that multiple processes influence the timing of first intercourse; thus, they underscore the need …

Mitochondrial Dna Variation In Screwworm, David B. Taylor, Allen L. Szalanski, Richard D. Peterson Ii
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCRRFLP) analysis was used to characterize mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation in screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax, and secondary screwworm, C. macellaria, from the Caribbean, North America and South America. Four amplicons, totaling 7.1 kb, were analysed with sixteen restriction enzymes. A total of 133 restriction sites was observed in the two species, 104 in C. hominivorax, of which nineteen were variable, and ninety-five in C. macellaria, none of which was variable. Fourteen mtDNA haplotypes were observed among eighteen C. hominivorax examined. Mean divergence between C. hominivorax haplotypes (d) was 0.0064 …

Oviposition And Calling Behavior Of Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) In The Presence Of Codlemone, Thomas J. Weissling, Alan L. Knight
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The effect of the major component of codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) sex pheromone (codlemone, E,E-8,10-dodecadien-l-ol) on female calling and oviposition behavior was investigated. Calling by virgin females was similar between moths placed in sealed containers containing codlemone or codlemone-free air. However, when pheromone emitted by females was removed by a continuous air stream, calling in codlemone-permeated air was significantly higher than in clean air. The temporal pattern of calling was unaltered by the presence of codlemone. In a laboratory no-choice test, oviposition rates by codling moth females were similar in the presence of codlemone and in codlemone-free air. However, …

Molecular Differentiation Of Alfalfa Weevil Strains (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), S. J. Erney, K. P. Pruess, S. D. Danielson, T. O. Powers
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Mitochondrial DNA was amplified and sequenced from eastern, western, and Egyptian strains of alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal). Eastern and Egyptian weevils differed at only 2 nucleotide sites in 1,031 base pairs sequenced; western weevils differed by 5% sequence divergence. Three restriction sites were identified which separated eastern and western haplotypes. No intrastrain polymorphism was detected in 150 weevils from Nebraska. Collections from Lincoln in eastern Nebraska and Scottsbluff in western Nebraska were fixed for the eastern and western haplotypes, respectively. Eastern and western haplotypes were found together in the same fields in a broad overlap region in central Nebraska.
