Permethrin-Impregnated Yarn: Longevity Of Efficacy And Potential Use On Cylindrical Fiberglass Stable Fly (Diptera: Muscidae) Traps, Jerome Hogsette, Joseph Ruff
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Efficacy of permethrin-impregnated orlon yam against stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), was 6-8 wk under simulated field conditions. Numbers of stable flies captured on corrugated cylindrical fiberglass traps painted with an adhesive indicated that these traps are attractive enough to be used in the field with treated yam applied. Reasons for variability of yam impregnation and the use of yam on cylinder traps are discussed.

Imidazolinone Herbicides Improve Restoration Of Great Plains Grasslands, Robert A. Masters, Scott Nissen, Roch E. Gaussoin, Daniel Beran, Robert Stougaard
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The productivity and native species diversity of Great Plains grasslands have been substantially reduced by past management that facilitated the establishment of invasive exotic weeds and displacement of native species. Management strategies are needed to rapidly restore the productive capacity and biological diversity of these degraded grasslands. Critically important phases of the grassland restoration process are the reintroduction and establishment of native species. Weed interference is the primary constraint to successful establishment of native plants. The goal of our research is to develop strategies that use multiple technologies, including herbicides, to expedite grassland revegetation with native grasses and forbs. Imidazolinon …

Chemical Residues In Representative Fish Species Surveyed From The North And South Platte River Systems In Keith And Lincoln Counties, Nebraska, Michael P. Gutzmer, Dale G. Luce
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
In 1993 and 1995 Nebraska Public Power District and Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District sampled 18 and 16 sites in the North and South Platte river systems, respectively. Column- and bottom-feeding fish such as walleye, white bass, carp, and channel catfish were sampled and analyzed for the presence of total polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), total mercury, and a variety of pesticides. PCBs and total mercury exceeded EPA action levels in Lake Maloney and Sutherland Reservoir in both years. Lake McConaughy fish also exhibited PCBs in 1993 and elevated mercury levels in both years. Organochlorine pesticides and some of their …

The North Platte River valley (elev. ca 3300 ft/990 m) in Garden and Keith counties, Nebraska, has an avifauna of 305 species, the richest known north of Texas in the Great Plains. More than 25 years of observations, mist-netting, banding, and breeding-bird surveys by the authors and others have revealed 104 breeding, 17 probably breeding, and 184 transient, casual, and accidental species. Hybridization of eastern with western species is evidenced by intermediates between Rose-breasted and Black-headed grosbeaks, Indigo and Lazuli buntings, Eastern and Spotted towhees, Baltimore and Bullock's orioles, and yellow- and red-shafted morphs of Northern Flicker; Eastern and Western …

Intraspecific Life History Variation In Sceloporus Undulatus: A Factor Analysis, Geoffrey R. Smith, John W. Rowe, Royce E. Ballinger
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
We examined life history variation in the lizard, Sceloporus undulatus, across its range. Data from published studies on 14 populations of S. undulatus were analyzed using factor analysis. Four factors were generated from the data. Factor 1 reflected the influence of body size on lizard life histories and explained 31% ofthe variance in S. undulatus life histories. Factor 2 represented the negative relationship of relative clutch mass and number of clutches per year and explained 17% of the variance. The third factor had strong positive loadings of egg mass, age at maturity, and adult survivorship, with a weaker negative …

Environmental Impacts In The Vicinity Of Spencer Hydropower Dam During Sluicing Activities In The Niobrara River, Nebraska, Michael P. Gutzmer, Justin W. King, David P. Overhue
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has monitored water quality since 1989 and fish populations since 1993 on the Niobrara River in Nebraska in the vicinity of Spencer Hydro during "flushing" or "sluicing" activities. These sluicing activities alter water quality in the river downstream, which can negatively impact fish populations. Higher numbers offish were sampled in 1995 when compared to 1993 and 1994. Of the 6,187 fish and 22 total species sampled above and below the hydro, six species comprised approximately 93 percent of the total sample. The most common species sampled were sand shiner, Notropis ludibundus (35.4%), red shiner, Cyprinella …
A New Genus Of Prairie Dog (Sciuridae, Rodentia) From The Miocene (Barstovian Of Montana And Clarendonian Of Nebraska) And The Classification Of Nearctic Ground Squirrels (Marmotini), William W. Korth
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
A new genus of sciurid, Cynomyoides, is named. The new genus includes a new species from the late Clarendonian of Nebraska, C. vatis (type species), and an unnamed species from the early Barstovian of Montana. The dental and mandibular morphology of Cynomyoides is reminiscent of that of the latest Tertiary to Recent prairie dog Cynomys and is believed to be part of the lineage leading to Cynomys. The recognition of a Miocene genus of prairie dog extends the known record of these ground squirrels well back into the Tertiary and makes it much less likely that Cynomys was …

An Ichthyological Survey Of The Forks Of The Platte River In Western Nebraska, John D. Lynch, Brian R. Roh
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
An ichthyological survey (1989-1995) of 31 sites on the North Platte and South Platte rivers and immediately below the North Platte diversion dam (junction of the North Platte and South Platte rivers) resulted in the captures and distributional documentation of 46 species of fishes. Four other species, found in the drainage, were captured in tributary streams only. Preserved voucher records are based on 49 sampling visits (1989-1995) to the 32 localities (approximately 55,000 specimens). An additional 42,000 nonvouchered specimens were taken, identified, and released at 17 of the localities (1980-1995). Above Lake McConaughy, the North Platte River is dominated by …
The Unionid Mollusks Of The Big And Little Nemaha River Basins Of Southeastern Nebraska And Northeastern Kansas, Ellet Hoke
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
A qualitative survey of the unionid mollusks of the Nemaha basins resulted in the recovery of twenty-seven taxa and the confirmation of one additional taxon through museum records. The channelization of the basins, combined with siltation and possibly the impacts of various pollutants, have severely impacted the bivalve fauna of the region, eliminating of as many as 61 percent of the documented unionid taxa of the basins.
Innovative Teaching Strategies In A Large, Introductory Level Geology Class At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Sanford S. Kaplan
Innovative Teaching Strategies In A Large, Introductory Level Geology Class At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Sanford S. Kaplan
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
During the Spring Semester of 1995-96, a large introductory- level geology class, Life of the Past, was re-structured from a traditional lecture format into a format that incorporated journaling, group work, cooperative learning, group presentations, self-assessment, and lectures. Some minor adjustments were made at the half-way point because of suggestions made on mid-semester evaluations. Based on a questionnaire distributed to randomly-selected former students, the overall class performance, and the final class evaluation, the new format was judged highly successful.

Xylem Pressure Potential Of Two Perennial Grasses, Bromus Inermis And Andropogon Scoparius, On The Oldfather Prairie In Central Nebraska, Charles J. Bicak, Troy M. Walz
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Xylem pressure potential of Bromus inermis and Andropogon scoparius was measured at predawn and at midday on the Oldfather Prairie west of Kearney, Nebraska (41° 42' N, 99° 08' W). This mixed-grass prairie is characterized by patches of B. inermis and A. scoparius growing in close proximity. Ten replicate pressure potential measurements were made weekly during the 1993 growing season. Water potential remained uniformly high and unchanged throughout the season at predawn for both species. Midday measurements were more variable and also more negative than at predawn on all but one sample date. Water potential deficit, defined as the difference …

Estimation Of Rice Yield Losses Due To The African Rice Gall Midge, Orseolia Oryzivora Harris And Gagne, Souleymane Nacro, E. A. Heinrichs, D. Dakouo
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The African rice gall midge, Orseolia oryzivora Harris and Gagne (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is an important pest of rice, Oryza sativa, in Burkina Faso as well as other countries in West and East Africa. In spite of its importance, little is known regarding the relationship between gall midge populations and grain yield losses. To determine yield losses, the gall midge was reared in cages, and adult midges were placed on caged plants of the rice variety ITA 123 at different population levels. The seven treatments consisted of different numbers of insects infested on the plants: 0 insect pairs (noninfested check), …

Membrane Topology Of The Colicin A Pore-Forming Domain Analyzed By Disulfide Bond Engineering, Denis Duche, Jacques Izard, Juan M. Gonzalez-Manas, Michael W. Parker, Marcel Crest, Daniel Baty
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Four colicin A double-cysteine mutants possessing a disulfide bond in their pore-forming domain were constructed to study the translocation and the pore formation of colicin A. The disulfide bonds connected a-helices 1 and 2, 2 and 10, 3 and 9, or 3 and 10 of the poreforming domain. The disulfide bonds did not prevent the colicin A translocation through the Escherichia coli envelope. However, the mutated colicins were able to exert their in vivo channel activity only after reduction of their disulfide bonds. In vitro studies with brominated phospholipid vesicles and planar lipid bilayers revealed that the disulfide bond that …

Long-Term Declines In Nest Success Of Prairie Ducks, Wendy D. Beauchamp, Rolf R. Koford, Thomas D. Nudds, Robert G. Clark, Douglas H. Johnson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Increased predation on nests of ducks in prairie uplands, as a result of habitat alteration, has been hypothesized to cause decreased nest success and population sizes. We tested whether, and by how much, nest success declined using data compiled from 37 studies conducted between 1935 and 1992 at 67 sites in the Prairie Pothole Region of Canada and the United States. Nest success declined (P = 0.0002) over time, but time explained only 10% of the variation; precipitation (P = 0.79) did not account for additional variation in nest success. Nest success declined at similar (P = 0.13) rates among …

Survival Of Radiomarked Canvasback Ducklings In Northwestern Minnesota, Carl E. Korschgen, Kevin P. Kenow, William L. Green, Douglas H. Johnson, Michael D. Samuel, Louis Sileo
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Duckling survival, an important factor affecting annual recruitment, has not been determined adequately for canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria). We investigated the magnitude, timing, and causes of mortality of canvasback ducklings from hatch to fledging at the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in northwestern Minnesota during 1987-90. During the 4 years, 217 day-old ducklings were radiomarked and released in 52 broods. Another 141 ducklings were radiomarked at > 4 weeks of age. Survival was estimated with the Kaplan-Meier nonparametric estimator and the Weibull parametric model. Most mortalities occurred within 10 days after hatch. Total brood loss occurred in 18 (35%) of …

Spatial Relationships Among Young Cercocarpus Ledifolius (Curlleaf Mountain Ylahogany), Brad W. Schultz, Robin J. Tausch, Paul T. Tueller
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
This study analyzed spatial location patterns of Cercocarpus ledifolius Nutt. (curlleaf mountain mahogany) plants, classified as current-year seedling, established seedling, juvenile, and immature individuals, at a central Nevada study site. Most current-year seedlings were located in mahogany stands in which large, mature individuals had the greatest abundance. These stands had greater litter cover and a thicker layer of litter than areas with few current- year seedlings. Most established young Cercocarpus were located in adjacent Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana (mountain big sagebrush) communities, or in infrequent canopy gaps between relatively few large, mature Cercocarpus. We discuss potential roles of plant litter, …

Western Balsam Bark Beetle, Dryocoetes Confusus Swaine, Flight Periodicity In Northern Utah, E. Matthew Hansen
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The flight periodicity of western balsam bark beetle (Dryocoetes confusus Swaine) in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, was studied during the summer months of 1992, 1993, and 1994. Contents of baited funnel traps were tallied by species up to 3 times weekly. Two main periods of flight activity were observed each year. The first and, generally, largest occurred in early summer soon after flight was initiated for the season. A 2nd period was observed in late summer, generally August. Timing of the 2 periods was influenced by unusually warm or cool weather in each study year. The 1st period had …
Identification And Characterization Of A Rapd-Pcr Marker For Distinguishing Asian And North American Gypsy Moths, K.J. Garner
Identification And Characterization Of A Rapd-Pcr Marker For Distinguishing Asian And North American Gypsy Moths, K.J. Garner
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The recent introduction of the Asian gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) into North America has necessitated the development of genetic markers to distinguish Asian moths from the established North American population, which originated in Europe. We used RAPD-PCR to identify a DNA length polymorphism that is diagnostic for the two moth strains. The polymorphism maps to an autosomal locus with codominant Mendelian inheritance. DNA sequence analyses of the Asian and North American forms enabled development of locus-specific primers so that this marker, designated FS-1, will be useful for strain identification under varying conditions in different laboratories.

A Mammalian 2-5a System Functions As An Antiviral Pathway In Transgenic Plants, Amitava Mitra, Dan W. Higgins, William G. Langenberg, Huiqin Nie, Dibyendu N. Sengupta, Robert H. Silverman
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Resistance to virus infections in higher vertebrates is mediated in part through catalysis of RNA decay by the interferon-regulated 2-5A system. A functional 2-5A system requires two enzymes, a 2-5A synthetase that produces 5"phosphorylated, 2',5'-linked oligoadenylates (2-5A) in response to double-stranded RNA, and the 2-5A-dependent RNase L. We have coexpressed these human enzymes in transgenic tobacco plants by using a single plasmid containing the cDNAs for both human RNase L and a low molecular weight form of human 2-5A synthetase under control of different, constitutive promoters. Expression of the human cDNAs in the transgenic plants was demonstrated from Northern blots, …
