Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and sequencing analyses were used to characterize an amplicon of ~625 bp in 4 of the 5 nominate species of Muscidifurax Girault & Sanders, pupal parasitoids of muscoid flies. A single polymorphic nucleotide site was observed among 2 samples of M. raptor Girault & Sanders. No sequence variation was observed among 3 samples of M. raptorellus Kogan & Legner. The sequence of M. uniraptor Kogan & Legner was identical to that of M. raptorellus. Nucleotide divergence among the Muscidifurax spp. ranged from 0.14 to 0.18 substitutions per nucleotide. Muscidifurax zaraptor Kogan & …

Insect Infestation Of Farm-Stored Maize In South Carolina: Towards Characterization Of A Habitat, R. T. Arbogast, James E. Throne
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Protecting stored grain from insect damage, with minimum pesticide risk, will require pest management based on comprehensive understanding of storage environments and their interactions with pest populations. Computer modeling offers the means to this understanding. To obtain data sets for modeling selected pests of stored maize, we studied maize storages on six farms in a four-county area of southwestern South Carolina. Grain moisture content was measured monthly, and grain temperatures were recorded hourly for one storage season. Insect populations were monitored by taking grain and pitfall trap samples at weekly or monthly intervals. Hourly mean grain temperatures remained below optimal …
Effects On White Leghorn Hens Of Constant Exposure To Ultraviolet Light From Insect Traps, Jerome Hogsette, Henry Wilson, Susan Semple-Rowland
Effects On White Leghorn Hens Of Constant Exposure To Ultraviolet Light From Insect Traps, Jerome Hogsette, Henry Wilson, Susan Semple-Rowland
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Constant exposure of Hy-Line® W-36 White Leghorn hens to ultraviolet light from insect traps resulted in no significant differences in egg production, fertility, hatchability of fertile eggs, or total hatchability. Also, there were no apparent effects on the eyes of the birds. Results were the same when either blacklight or blacklight blue tubes were used. The need for additional testing of light traps for nuisance fly control in commercial caged layer houses is discussed.
Selenium Speciation Of Soil/ Sediment Determined With Sequential Extractions And Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, Dean A. Martens, Donald L. Suarez
Selenium Speciation Of Soil/ Sediment Determined With Sequential Extractions And Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, Dean A. Martens, Donald L. Suarez
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Understanding the speciation of the multioxidation states of selenium is vital to predicting the mineralization, mobilization, and toxicity of the trace element in natural systems. Asequential extraction scheme (SES) was developed for identification of Se oxidation states that first employed 0.1 M (pH 7.0) K2HPO4-KH2PO4 (P-buffer) to release soluble selenate (Se+VI) and selenide (Se-II) and ligand-exchangeable selenite (Se+IV). The second step involved oxidation of organic materials with 0.1 M K2S2O8 (90 °C) to release Se-II and Se+IV associated or occluded …

Creativity In Science: Historical Illustrations And The Academic Paradigm, Laddie J. Bicak
Creativity In Science: Historical Illustrations And The Academic Paradigm, Laddie J. Bicak
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Koestler identifies creativity in terms of the ability of the individual to make analogies, the ability to recognize relationships between apparently unrelated events. Joseph Lister struggled with the unknown cause of sepsis, gangrene and suppuration in surgical wounds. Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis was immersed in his work to determine the cause of puerperal fever. Of many creative giants in the history of science, Walker places Pasteur among the best for his "astonishing ability for seeing the salient factors of a problem." Boyer relates scholarship and creativity to academics who carry on research, publish, and perhaps relay to their students what they …
The Unionid Mollusks Of The Upper Kansas Basin Of Northwestern Kansas And Southwestern Nebraska, Ellet Hoke
The Unionid Mollusks Of The Upper Kansas Basin Of Northwestern Kansas And Southwestern Nebraska, Ellet Hoke
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
A qualitative survey of the Upper Kansas Basin resulted in the documentation of a unionid fauna consisting of twenty-one native taxa, as well as the introduced bivalve Corbicula fluminea. Biological diversity was greatest in the extreme eastern portion of the basin with the highest concentrations occurring in the habitat-rich eastern-most creeks. Shifting sand substrates and declining or unstable flows, coupled with intensive grazing of livestock, increasingly limit unionid distributions on an east to west continuum.
The Effects Of Aeration On Amphibian Larval Growth: An Experiment With Bullfrog Tadpoles, Geoffrey R. Smith
The Effects Of Aeration On Amphibian Larval Growth: An Experiment With Bullfrog Tadpoles, Geoffrey R. Smith
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
I conducted an experiment to assess the effects of aeration on the growth of bullfrog tadpoles (Rana catesbeiana). Tadpoles in the non-aerated treatment grew slower than tadpoles in the aerated treatment. Tadpoles in the nonaerated treatment were observed at the water's surface more often and on food resources less often than tadpoles in the aerated treatment. Oxygen concentrations in natural aquatic habitats varied greatly (encompassing the range of the experimental treatments), suggesting the results of this study may be applicable to natural situations. The results suggest oxygen content (and/or disturbance) of aquatic habitats may influence the distribution and …
Retention Of Relative Grip Effort For At-Home Isometric Exercise, Janet E. Steele
Retention Of Relative Grip Effort For At-Home Isometric Exercise, Janet E. Steele
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The purpose of this work was to determine if subjects initially trained to use a handgrip dynamometer could learn to perform the exercises at the same relative level of effort with a considerably less expensive substitute device. All subjects trained (4, 2-minute contractions, 30% maximal effort) 3 times per week for 12 weeks. In Study I, Group 1 (n = 13) trained using only the dynamometer while Group 2 (n = 14) trained using both the dynamometer and an egg-shaped substitute item for the first 6 weeks. All subjects then trained using only the egg-shaped item. Grip effort …

Spontaneous Pressure Diuresis In Conscious Rats, Janet E. Steele, Paul H. Brand, Patricia J. Metting, Steven Loyal Britton
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Pressure diuresis is thought to be a long-term mechanism that is essential for regulation of blood volume and arterial pressure (AP). We recently found that experimentally- induced changes in AP result in changes in urine flow (UF) within 6 seconds in anesthetized rats. To test our hypothesis that the long-term nature of pressure diuresis is the result of the cumulative sum of many short-term changes in UF occurring in response to spontaneous changes in AP, AP (via an aortic catheter) and UF (via a gravimetric method) were measured over 2 hours in 8 conscious, free-moving, chronically …

Wyclif On Rights, Stephen E. Lahey
Wyclif On Rights, Stephen E. Lahey
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
In the study of medieval political philosophy the tendency has been to pay attention to thinkers who appear to have contributed to the birth of the modem. While the value in coming to understand how modem political thought developed is undeniable, this tendency is accompanied by an implicit, perhaps unintentional, devaluation of the study of that which did not contribute as obviously to modernity. In the history of the idea of the natural right scholars have distinguished between the objective and the subjective right, characterizing the subjective right as what lies at the heart of the classically modem and liberal. …
Birds Of Western North America, Lawrence D. Igl
Birds Of Western North America, Lawrence D. Igl
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
This photographic identification guide covers more than 530 species of birds that regularly occur in the western half of North America. It is slightly larger than most field guides, including the popular National Geographic Society's Field Guide to the Birds of North America, which is continental in coverage. Nonetheless, it is small and sturdy enough to conveniently carry in a jacket pocket or backpack. The field guide begins with a short section on how to use the book; the bulk of the book consists of species accounts. Each species account occurs on one page (a few species are jointly …
Metapopulations And The Real World, Douglas H. Johnson
Metapopulations And The Real World, Douglas H. Johnson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Metapopulations are currently a hot topic in ecological theory and conservation biology. Fundamentally, a metapopulation is a population of populations, and the term describes certain populations that inhabit discrete habitat patches. Individuals move between patches often enough to recolonize extirpated patches, but not so frequently that the patches exhibit similar population trajectories. The term "metapopulation" was coined and a theory formalized by Richard Levins in 1969, but the concept of spatially divided populations has been around for a longer time.

Influence Of A Mycorrhizal Fungus And/Or Rhizobium On Growth And Biomass Partitioning Of Subterranean Clover Exposed To Ozone, Joseph E. Miller, Steven R. Shafer, Michele M. Schoeneberger, Walter A. Pursley, Stephanie J. Horton, Charles B. Davy
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The influence of soilborne symbionts such as rhizobia or mycorrhizal fungi on plant response to ozone (O3) has not been well defined. Leguminous plants in the field are infected by both types of organisms, which influence plant nutrition and growth. We studied the effects of infection with Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii and/or Gigaspora margarita on response of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L. cv Mt. Barker) to O3. Exposures were conducted in greenhouse CSTR chambers using four O3 concentrations [charcoal-filtered (CF), 50, 100, or 150 ppb; 6 h day-1, 5 day wk-1 …
Identification Of Three Randomly Amplified Polymorphic Dna-Polymerase Chain Reaction Markers For Distinguishing Asian And North American Gypsy Moths (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), David E. Schreiber, Karen J. Garner, James M. Slavicek
Identification Of Three Randomly Amplified Polymorphic Dna-Polymerase Chain Reaction Markers For Distinguishing Asian And North American Gypsy Moths (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), David E. Schreiber, Karen J. Garner, James M. Slavicek
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Gypsy moths originating in Asia have recently been introduced into North America, making it necessary to develop markers for distinguishing the Asian strain from the established North American population. We have identified 3 randomly amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction generated (RAPD-PCR) markers which are specific for either Asian or North American moths. The FS-2 and FS-3 markers are specific for the North American strain, and the FS-4 marker is specific for moths from far east Asia. The 3 RAPD-amplified fragments have been cloned and sequenced, and locus-specific primers have been developed for the FS-3 marker. These markers, in combination with …

Characterization Of The Replication Cycle Of The Lymantria Dispar Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus, Christopher I. Riegel, James M. Slavicek
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The life cycle of the Lymantria dispar nuclear polyhedrosis virus (LdMNPV) was characterized through analysis of budded virus (BV) release, the temporal formation of polyhedra, the temporal transcription pattern of representative early, late, and hyper-expressed late genes, and the onset of DNA replication in the Ld652Y cell line. Transcripts from the LdMNPV immediate early gene G22 were detected 4 h post infection (h p.i.). The late and hyper-expressed late p39 capsid and polyhedrin genes were initially transcribed at approximately 20 and 24 h p.i., respectively. Viral DNA replication initiated at approximately 18-20 h p.i. Budded virus …
Changes In Breeding Bird Populations In North Dakota: 1967 To 1992-93, Lawrence Igl, Douglas Johnson
Changes In Breeding Bird Populations In North Dakota: 1967 To 1992-93, Lawrence Igl, Douglas Johnson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
We compared breeding bird populations in North Dakota using surveys conducted in 1967 and 1992-93. In decreasing order, the five most frequently occurring species were Horned Lark (Eremophila alpestris), Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater), Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta), Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), and Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus). The five most abundant species-Horned Lark, Chestnut-collared Longspur (Calcarius ornatus), Red-winged Blackbird, Western Meadowlark, and Brown-headed Cowbird-accounted for 31-41% of the estimated statewide breeding bird population in the three years. Although species composition remained relatively similar among years, between year patterns in …
Perspectives On The Diagnosis, Epizootiology, And Control Of The 1973 Duck Plague Epizootic In Wild Waterfowl At Lake Andes, South Dakota, Gary Pearson, Delmar Cassidy
Perspectives On The Diagnosis, Epizootiology, And Control Of The 1973 Duck Plague Epizootic In Wild Waterfowl At Lake Andes, South Dakota, Gary Pearson, Delmar Cassidy
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
An epizootic of duck plague occurred in early 1973 in a population of 163,500 wild waterfowl, primarily mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), wintering on Lake Andes and the nearby Missouri River in southeastern South Dakota (USA). The diagnosis was based on pathologic lesions and confirmed by virus isolation. Control measures included quarantine, attempts to reduce virus contamination of the area, dispersal of waterfowl, and monitoring of wild waterfowl populations for mortality. The epizootic resulted in documented mortality of 18% and estimated mortality of 26% of the waterfowl at risk. Prompt implementation of control measures might have limited mortality to approximately …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The ITS region from a wide taxonomic range of nematodes, including secernentean and adenophorean taxa, and free-living, entomopathogenic, and plant-parasitic species, was evaluated as a taxonomic marker. Size of the amplified product aided in the initial determination of group membership, and also suggested groups that may require taxonomic reevaluation. Congeneric species often displayed identically sized ITS regions, but genera such as Pratylenchus and Tylenchorhynchus had species with large differences in size. ITS heterogeneity in individuals and populations was identified in several nematode taxa. PCR-RFLP of ITS1 is advocated as a method of taxonomic analysis in genera such as Helicotylenchus that …

Phosphorylation by casein kinase II at three specific residues (S-60, T-62, and S-64) within the acidic domain I of the P protein of Indiana serotype vesicular stomatitis virus has been shown to be critical for in vitro transcription activity of the viral RNA polymerase (P-L) complex. To examine the role of phosphorylation of P protein in transcription as well as replication in vivo, we used a panel of mutant P proteins in which the phosphate acceptor sites in domain I were substituted with alanines or other amino acids. Analyses of the alanine-substituted mutant P proteins for the ability to support …
