Unintended intraoperative awareness is a traumatizing complication of general anesthesia. This negative outcome affects 0.1-0.2% of all patients undergoing general anesthesia. Patients at higher risk for this experience include those undergoing emergency surgery, traumas, cesarian sections, those on cardiopulmonary bypass, those with substance use disorder, and those undergoing total-intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). This high-risk population is affected by unintended intraoperative awareness 1% of the time. The bispectral index (BIS) monitor has been proposed as a tool to decrease the incidence of unintended intraoperative awareness. Perimenopause is a span of four to six years preceding menopause when estrogen levels decline. Up to 40% of women experience depression during the perimenopause transition. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be an effective treatment for depressive symptoms during perimenopause, but many healthcare practitioners prescribe antidepressants instead of HRT for the management of mood-related symptoms. Perimenopausal depression is associated with the progression of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. This literature review aims to explore and expand the use of music therapy in the treatment of substance use disorder (SUD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), two diagnoses that frequently co-occur. The paper first explores music therapy research in each diagnosis separately and then offers areas where music therapy interventions can be incorporated into the Concurrent Treatment of Substance Use Disorder and PTSD using Prolonged Exposure (COPE) treatment model developed by Sudie Back. Tabletop role-playing games have become increasingly popular, particularly in the Queer community (Diamond, 2022). This literature review examines the existing research regarding TTRPGs as a psychological intervention, with particular focus on their value as an expressive art therapy intervention for Queer clients, using a socio-ecological model of Queer mental health (Mink et al., 2014) and drawing from core expressive arts theories. Eating disorders (ED) and pathogenic behaviors are prevalent concerns among collegiate athletes due to performance pressures and body image expectations. This cross-sectional study examined the risk of ED among 243 student-athletes (Males: 54.9%, Females: 44.3%, Non-Binary: 0.4%) at a private institution in the Midwest. The convenience sample included student-athletes from baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling teams. The participants were given a demographic survey, the Eating Attitudes Test-26, and Sex-Specific Figural Stimuli Silhouettes to assess eating behaviors and perceived and desired body images. Bison, the American buffalo, are increasingly utilized for food consumption due to their high protein content. Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is an important food-borne pathogen that leads to severe clinical infections and becomes antimicrobial-resistant (AMR). Specifically, fluoroquinolone antibiotics can complicate human treatment when infected with resistant STEC. This study aims to determine the presence of STEC in bison reservoirs and their antimicrobial resistance. Fecal samples (n=320) from bison herds were collected, followed by specific culture-based isolation for STEC. Viruses are ubiquitous in deep-sea hydrothermal vents, where they influence microbial communities and biogeochemistry. Yet, viral ecology and evolution remain understudied in these environments. Here, we identify 49,962 viruses from 52 globally distributed hydrothermal vent samples (10 plume, 40 deposit, and 2 diffuse flow metagenomes), and reconstruct 5708 viral metagenome-assembled genomes, the majority of which were bacteriophages. Hydrothermal viruses were largely endemic, however, some viruses were shared between geographically separated vents, predominantly between the Lau Basin and Brothers Volcano in the Pacific Ocean. Conservation of rare species often relies on the delineation of management units and genomic tools can now be applied for this purpose. However, this is not as common on a local scale, where populations are often small and fragmented, despite the utility of informing conservation and management practice at the regional level. We use a genotyping by sequencing (GBS) approach to assess the perennial riparian plant species Baptisia australis (Fabaceae) in Pennsylvania, where the taxon is at the edge of its natural distribution and considered threatened. Livestock depredation by large carnivores significantly threatens human livelihoods across the globe, with severe ecological and socioeconomic implications. Economic costs of livestock depredation impact the tolerance for carnivores among communities living alongside wildlife, often straining human-carnivore coexistence. Using geographic and temporal attributes from livestock depredation records (n=406) collected between 2004 and 2023, we identified spatiotemporal patterns of depredation by African lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas in the Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem in northern Tanzania. Ambystoma mexicanum is an aquatic salamander species, commonly known as the axolotl, native to Mexico that is widely researched all over the world. In the wild, these salamanders have brown/black colored skin due to the presence of melanophores and xanthophores with shiny spots due to iridophores. In captivity, however, there are multiple different color morphs (phenotypes) of axolotls including leucistic, melanistic, and copper. Melanoid axolotls have black skin made by mostly melanophores, little xanthophores, and no iridophores. The objective of this research was to create a universal robotic end effector also known as a jamming gripper and test the effectiveness of coffee grounds vs. kinetic sand as the granular material used in the end effector. The apparatus used was a system containing an Arduino UNO, a 12-volt vacuum pump, an h-bridge, a solenoid valve, and the jamming gripper itself. An assortment of objects was used to see how well the gripper could pick up objects of different sizes, shapes, and weights.
