Family Relationship Histories, Intergenerational Relationship Quality, And Depressive Affect Among Rural Elderly People, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kimberly A. Tyler
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Based on a sample of matched adult children and aging parents in the rural Mid¬west, this study examined the effects of family relationship history on depressive symptoms among elderly parents. The study used reports from both adult chil¬dren and aging parents regarding intergenerational affectional solidarity and re¬lationship strain. Aging parents reported levels of depressed affect. Adult chil¬dren’s recalled early relationships with their parents were associated with elderly parents’ reports of depressed affect through the effects of early family relation¬ships on contemporary relationships. Reports of early relationships and contem¬porary relationships were separated by 5 years. It is suggested that family rela¬tionship …

Child Emotional Maltreatment: A 2-Year Study Of Us Army Cases, Linda K. Jellen, James E. Mccarroll, Laurie E. Thayer
United States Army: Publications
Objective: Reports of childhood emotional maltreatment have increased greatly over the past decade. The objective of this research was to determine the types of emotional maltreatment substantiated in a community of US Army families residing temporarily in Germany. Such a description may help to improve the understanding of how a jurisdictional body defines emotional maltreatment in day-to-day practice.
Method: Data were obtained from a review of the minutes of case review committees (CRCs) for 181 cases of child emotional abuse in 1997–1998. We determined the type, number, and severity of incidents, the substantiation rate, and the situations to which children …

Parental Compliance: Its Role In Termination Of Parental Rights Cases, Eve M. Brank, Angie L. Williams, Victoria Weisz, Robert E. Ray
Nebraska Law Review
This article examines the current state of termination of parental rights (TPR) law, along with the results of an appellate case review, an exploratory project, and an empirical investigation of decision-making related to these cases. Section I begins with an overview of termination of parental rights law. The focus of this section is recent statutory changes in the area, highlighting some key differences between the former and the current law. In Section II, the focus shifts to a review of the foundations for the empirical study. Section III more specifically addresses the main areas that are explored in the empirical …

This paper has three objectives designed to support the work of practice systems, scholars, and policy makers. First, it provides a conceptual model that supports a multidisciplinary, multicultural, collaborative university-community research, service, and teaching group that is consistent with the philosophy, mission, and objectives of land grant institutions and community systems. Second, it describes how the Latino Research Initiative implemented this collaborative model to support the goals of the university and the community to enhance the lives of Latinos in Lincoln, Nebraska. Finally, this paper discusses how this collaborative model can be used or adapted by university and community professionals …
The Science And Theory Of Empirically Supported Treatments: A Response To Hughes, Susan M. Sheridan
The Science And Theory Of Empirically Supported Treatments: A Response To Hughes, Susan M. Sheridan
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
School psychologists work in dynamic contexts, and the conceptual and empirical bases that shape and inform the field are broad and diverse. As a profession, school psychology is concerned with providing services to a broad constituency base, with children and youth at the center. Because the work of school psychologists concerns helping children, there is a huge professional and ethical responsibility to ensure that what we do or the treatments we recommend have the greatest potential to result in the greatest amount of good. It is therefore important to understand the extant intervention literature base including its conceptual underpinnings, data-based …
Understanding The Dynamics Of Child Maltreatment: Child Harm, Family Healing, And Public Policy (Discussant's Commentary), Ross A. Thompson
Understanding The Dynamics Of Child Maltreatment: Child Harm, Family Healing, And Public Policy (Discussant's Commentary), Ross A. Thompson
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
For almost a half-century, the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation has profiled many of the evolving themes and issues at the heart of psychology. It has also documented, less directly, changes in society. When the symposium was inaugurated in 1951, child maltreatment was a sad reality of life for many children, but it was not a topic of considerable professional attention. With the identification of the "battered child syndrome" (Kempe, Silverman, Steele, Droegemueller, & Silver, 1962) in the early 1960s, however, professional concern with the plight of abused and neglected children quickly grew. National attention to child maltreatment also increased as …
Reinventing A Cultural Self: Textile Design And Native American Youth, Gloria Gonzalez-Kruger, Wendy Weiss, Mary Lee Johns
Reinventing A Cultural Self: Textile Design And Native American Youth, Gloria Gonzalez-Kruger, Wendy Weiss, Mary Lee Johns
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
This paper presents a description of a textile based program for Native American youth and an investigation that resulted from a community-university collaborative effort. This paper can help inform practice, academic, and policy related professionals who are interested in developing, implementing, or evaluating youth programming and culturally-based programs. The purpose of the project was threefold: 1) to involve youth from the Indian Center, Inc. of Lincoln in the design and creation of an art project, which was installed at the Daywatch facility in Lincoln, Nebraska, 2) to examine how the cultural knowledge, perceptions, beliefs, and identity of youth from the …

Striving To Do Well What Comes Naturally: Social Support, Developmental Psychopathology, And Social Policy, Ross A. Thompson, Lenna Ontai
Striving To Do Well What Comes Naturally: Social Support, Developmental Psychopathology, And Social Policy, Ross A. Thompson, Lenna Ontai
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Social support can have significant stress-preventive and stress-buffering benefits for troubled individuals in everyday circumstances. Consequently, it is not surprising that many therapeutic and preventive programs enlist social support to address problems of child and family psychopathology, especially in the context of “two-generation interventions” that seek to improve child well-being by strengthening parental functioning and parent–child relationships. Home visitation programs are the best known of these two-generation strategies and have become the focus of state-level and national efforts to support families and prevent harm to children. The conclusions of basic research studies on social support converge significantly with the findings …

Low-Income Fathers’ And Mothers’ Perceptions Of The Father Role: A Qualitative Study In Four Early Head Start Communities, Jean Ann Summers, Helen Raikes, James Butler, Paul Spicer, Barbara Pan, Sarah Shaw, Mark Langager, Carol Mcallister, Monique K. Johnson
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
A qualitative inquiry in four Early Head Start Research sites explored the question of how low-income mothers and fathers view the role of fathers in their families. Role perceptions were gathered from a total of 56 parents of infants and toddlers across the four sites, using multiple data collection methods that included focus groups, open-ended interviews, and one case study. The data were analyzed to identify common themes across sites. The participants identified roles that included: providing financial support, “being there,” care giving, outings and play, teaching and discipline, providing love, and protection. Implications of these qualitative findings are discussed …

The Blood Runs Through Every One Of Us And We Are Stronger For It: The Role Of Head Start In Promoting Cultural Continuity In Tribal Communities , Linda Mayo Willis, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
This multiple case study examined American Indian Program Branch Head Start directors' perceptions of the role their particular Head Start program plays preserving cultural integrity in tribal communities. Of specific research interest were the unique aspects of the tribal customs of child rearing and early childhood educational practices within each community. Another area of research focused on exploring each director's vision of how the Head Start experience contributes to the future of the children. Ten tribal Head Start directors from the Great Plains region were interviewed. The grand tour question addressed how participants described their perception of the role of …

Philosophy And Purposes Of Distance Education, Dr. Janet K. Poley, Mr. Erik France
Nebraska Network 21: Publications
In considering how best to tackle this topic, I ultimately decided that in Nebraska the "best" approach is usually the "most straight forward" one. Given that much of the conversation about distance education is filled with myth and marketing hype, I decided what we could best contribute to the conversation would be the facts. While some of the other authors may have a better in-depth grasp of distance education opportunities and realities in Nebraska, Erik and I come as native Nebraskans with a good understanding of the history, economy, communities and cultures in our home state. My early faculty career …

Adolescent Heterosocial Competence Revisited: Implications Of An Expanded Conceptualization For The Prevention Of High-Risk Sexual Interactions, Douglas W. Nangle, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The current HIV/AIDS epidemic has revitalized interest in adolescent sexual behavior and led to exciting new lines of prevention research. Researchers have concluded that awareness of the risks associated with high-risk sexual behavior alone is not enough to change the behavior of adolescents. Cognitive behavioral skills interventions that directly teach adolescents new skills are now widely recommended as components of prevention efforts. Although social-skills training has often been included as a component of such interventions, we actually know little about how social skills and adolescent sexual behavior are related. This paper provides a conceptual framework based on social-learning theory for …
G98-1366 Establishing Juvenile Diversion In Your Community, Stephen T. Russell, Susan Wood, Sara Domeier
G98-1366 Establishing Juvenile Diversion In Your Community, Stephen T. Russell, Susan Wood, Sara Domeier
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Juvenile diversion programs are created to divert youth from early encounters with the juvenile court system. By focusing on strengths of children in a positive youth development framework, successful diversion programs discourage delinquency and encourage stronger family and community relationships. This guide describes the issues communities need to consider in the development of a juvenile diversion program.
Each year over two million juveniles in the United States are arrested and become involved in the juvenile court system. Juvenile diversion programs have been created to divert youth from their early encounters with the juvenile court system. These programs involve the suspension …
