Social networks and daily activities of children and adolescents living and/or working on the streets of a large Brazilian city were examined. Drawing on data collected through structured surveys, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and field observations, we described street youths’ family situation, social resources, institutional experiences, survival activities, and problem behaviors and investigated differences attributable to age, gender, and living situation (at home or on the street). Youngsters who lived at home and worked on the street appeared to be experiencing orderly development despite their impoverished circumstances. Youngsters who lived on the street showed hallmarks of psychological and physical …

Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
The SREC is a well-run, productive unit with the faculty showing a lot of commitment and teamwork. It is apparent that District Director Loyd Young has done an outstanding job of providing leadership and developing an effective staff and unit. The issues addressed by this unit appear on target. The unit has identified emerging issues for the near future.
Ken Bolen, Dean and Director of Cooperative Extension, asked the Review Team to evaluate the extension program with a focus on what's best for clientele. He asked the team to consider the following questions:
1. What are the issues? Has the …

Relations Between Social Skills And High-Risk Sexual Interactions Among Adolescents, Douglas W. Nangle, David J. Hansen
Relations Between Social Skills And High-Risk Sexual Interactions Among Adolescents, Douglas W. Nangle, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Researchers have begun to employ social-skills training in efforts to change the sexual behavior of adolescents. However, despite the promise of social-skills training, little is known about how social skills are related to the sexual practices of adolescents. The present article reviews the current literature and proposes a conceptual framework for understanding the relations between social skills and sexual behavior of adolescents by (a)examining the relationship between sexual activity and social skills, (b) examining the development of sexual-interaction skills and deficits, (c) summarizing what is currently known about the relations between social skills and sexual behavior, (d) discussing current issues …
1993 Issues Review
Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
This self-study document was prepared by the faculty and staff of the South Central Research and Extension Center in preparation for the unit review.
The format for this review differs from past reviews in two primary areas. First, the review focuses on issues; thus the emphasis is on looking forward rather than evaluating the past. Second, the review team is largely composed of IANR staff who are familiar with the organization and programming processes. Because of these differences, this document emphasizes the issues and the processes which occurred to arrive at this point. The limited background data is included to …
A Comparison Of Adaptive Strategies And Patterns Of Victimization Among Homeless Adolescents And Adults, Les B. Whitbeck, Ronald L. Simons
A Comparison Of Adaptive Strategies And Patterns Of Victimization Among Homeless Adolescents And Adults, Les B. Whitbeck, Ronald L. Simons
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
One hundred and fifty-six homeless adolescents and 319 homeless adults interviewed directly on the streets and in shelters were compared for backgrounds of abuse, adaptations to life on the streets, and rates of criminal victimization when on the streets. Homeless adolescents were more likely to be from abusive family backgrounds, more likely to rely on deviant survival strategies, and more likely to be criminally victimized. A social learning model of adaptation and victimization on the streets was hypothesized. Although the model was supported for both homeless adults and adolescents, it was more strongly supported for adolescents than adults, and for …

Improving Life Chances For Children In Nebraska, Mary Mcmanus Kluender, Robert L. Egbert
Improving Life Chances For Children In Nebraska, Mary Mcmanus Kluender, Robert L. Egbert
Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications
To a great extent, the potential of a child's future is determined by his or her earliest experiences, including education. The life chances of children, both those who are presumed to be at risk and those who are presumed to have a wide range of opportunities, are examined and discussed in this chapter. Factors that help or hinder life chances are described, and data that serve as indicators of life chances are addressed. National and state data about children considered to be at risk of school failure are reviewed. These data indicate that educators, administrators and policy makers should work …
The Confinement Of Juveniles In Nebraska Jails And Lockups, Lorie A. Fridell, Vincent J. Webb
The Confinement Of Juveniles In Nebraska Jails And Lockups, Lorie A. Fridell, Vincent J. Webb
Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications
Using adult jails and lockups for confining youths is a major issue in juvenile justice. Proponents of removing children from these facilities are concerned with the conditions of confinement, the .ate of suicide among youths held in adult facilities, the excessive use of secure confinement for youths, and the legal liability of jurisdictions that hold juveniles in adult facilities. Nebraska has made significant progress in reducing the number of youths confined in adult jails and lockups, but has yet to pass legislation or develop programs and facilities to complete the task. Policy options for reducing the use of secure confinement …
Child Poverty And Child Welfare In Nebraska, Ann Coyne, Herb Grandbois
Child Poverty And Child Welfare In Nebraska, Ann Coyne, Herb Grandbois
Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications
Children represent the fastest growing group of poor people in the United States today. An increase in the number of children living with one parent, an increase in unwed teenage pregnancy, a lack of child support, lower wages and benefits for women than for men, the cost of child care, and unemployment and underemployment in two-parent families contribute to child poverty. Policy options ranging from changing eligibility requirements for assistance programs to establishing state funded health insurance programs are presented. Methods of responding to abused and neglected children have changed dramatically. The effect of PI 96-272 on the child welfare …
