Effect Of Sensation Seeking And Perfectionism On Stimulant Use, Carissa J. Scurlock Apr 2010

Effect Of Sensation Seeking And Perfectionism On Stimulant Use, Carissa J. Scurlock

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Stimulant use is quickly becoming a widespread problem in the United States, especially on college campuses. Determining the risk factors for stimulant use may help professionals improve treatments for stimulant abusers. When considering Eysenck’s Psychoticism Extraversion Neuroticism (PEN) personality theory, the occurrence of both sensation-seeing and perfectionism may be predictive of substance use. In fact, many studies show that sensation seeking plays a role in stimulant use. However, few studies exist concerning the association between perfectionism and stimulants. The goals of this study were to a) examine the effects of gender and ethnicity on stimulant use and b) to examine …

Discontinuities And Differences Among Muslim Arab-Americans: Making It At Home And School, Loukia K. Sarroub

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Cohen and Neufeld (1981) have remarked that schools are a great theater in which conflicts of culture get played out. The same can be said about homes and families in relation to schools. In fact, scholars and educators have attempted to understand, define, and refine the parameters and connections that bind schools and homes together. In this chapter, I explore the ways in which students’ success at home and school has been conceptualized in scholarly literature, and then connect this literature to the lives of Arab-American youth and their families. The underlying premise undergirding the ideas in this chapter is …

Child Sexual Abuse Victims And Their Families Receiving Services At A Child Advocacy Center: Mental Health And Support Needs, Tara K. Cossel

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The present study aimed to document the effects of child sexual abuse among children, non-offending parents, and siblings to further address the needs of child victims and their families. Following abuse, children are often referred to Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) for mental health and other support needs. Today most sexually abused children receive homogenized treatment from CACs; however, there is variability in the needs these children and their family members present with (Finkelhor & Berliner, 1995). Research has begun to investigate the variability in symptom patterns of sexual abuse victims, finding aspects of the abuse including severity, duration, frequency, and …

“All The Men Here Have The Peter Pan Syndrome— They Don’T Want To Grow Up”: Navajo Adolescent Mothers’ Intimate Partner Relationships—A 15-Year Perspective, Rochelle L. Dalla, Alexandria M. Marchetti, Elizabeth (Beth) A. Sechrest, Jennifer L. White Jan 2010

White

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

In 1992 and 1995, data were collected from 29 Navajo Native American adolescent mothers. In 2007 and 2008, data were collected from 21 of the original 29 (72%). Guided by feminist family theory, this investigation sought to (a) examine Navajo adolescent mothers’ intimate partner relationships during the transition to parenthood, (b) identify themes in the young mothers’ intimate partnerships across time, and (c) assess participants’ psychosocial well-being in adulthood. Four themes emerged in the women’s long-term intimate relationships: limited support, substance abuse, infidelity, and intimate partner violence. Implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Safe Schools Policies: Necessary But Not Sufficient For Creating Positive School Environments For Lgbtq Students [Commentary], Susan M. Swearer Napolitano

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

In this issue of Social Policy Report, authors Russell, Kosciw, Horn, and Saewyc review the research on LGBTQ youth and illuminate a fundamental challenge facing researchers, educators, students, families, and policymakers. They write that “homophobia and LGBTQ prejudice are daily experiences” and that the challenge facing educators is to “design supportive school climates that promote the positive development of LGBTQ and all students.” There exists in this country and in many countries around the world a huge gulf between acceptance of LGBTQ individuals and creating supportive school and work environments for all individuals. The reality is that in many …

Collection Development For The Department Of Psychology,, Charles D. Bernholz

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Collection Development Policies

The University of Nebraska was founded in Lincoln in 1871, but it took almost two decades until psychology courses were offered. The man who was singularly responsible for bringing psychology to the University was Professor Harry Kirk Wolfe, and thus the history of the Psychology Department begins with him.

Harry K. Wolfe enrolled as an undergraduate in the University in 1876, just five years after the University was chartered. Four years later, he graduated in a class of eight. Three years later, he went to Leipzig Germany to study in the laboratory of the founder of experimental psychology, Professor Wilhelm …

Book Review: Survival Or Gradual Extinction: The Small Town In The Great Plains Of Eastern Montana By Marvin Gloege, Lyn C. Macgregor Oct 2009

Book Review: Survival Or Gradual Extinction: The Small Town In The Great Plains Of Eastern Montana By Marvin Gloege, Lyn C. Macgregor

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Marvin Gloege has assembled an impressive array of information about demographic trends affecting the small communities of eastern Montana. Survival or Gradual Extinction examines the state of 22 communities and poses a question of deep importance both to their residents and to those who believe there is value in preserving America’s small communities and the way of life they afford: will they be able to retain populations of sufficient size to survive? Though the title of the book indicates that Gloege’s primary concern is about the future of these communities, he does a better job of documenting the historical conditions …

Book Review: New Faces In New Places: The Changing Geography Of American Immigration Edited By Douglas S. Massey, John Defrain

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Patterns of immigration to the U.S. have been changing since the 1990s. The geographic dispersion of immigrants away from traditional urban gateways— New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and Chicago— into smaller communities throughout the country means that millions of native-born Americans lacking any experience with foreigners are now, for the first time in living memory, having direct and sustained contact with unassimilated immigrants. The newcomers settle in small towns as well as large cities, in the middle of the country as well as the coasts. Especially relevant to Great Plains Research readers, the new immigrants have discovered the Middle …

The Early Development Of Gender Differences, Matthew H. Mcintyre, Carolyn P. Edwards Oct 2009

The Early Development Of Gender Differences, Matthew H. Mcintyre, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This article reviews findings from anthropology, psychology, and other disciplines about the role of biological factors in the development of sex differences in human behavior, including biological theories, the developmental course of sex differences, and the interaction of biological and cultural gendering processes at different ages. Current evidence suggests that major biological influences on individual differences in human gender, to the extent that they exist, operate primarily in early development, during and especially prior to puberty. Biological effects are likely to be mediated by relatively simple processes, like temperament, which are then elaborated through social interactions (as with mother and …

The Role Of Tribal Child Care Programs Serving Children From Birth To Age Five, Linda Mayo Willis

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study investigated American Indian child care directors’ perceptions of the reservation community’s efforts to promote and preserve cultural integrity in the local transmission of cultural values to children aged birth to five who are enrolled in tribal child care programs on American Indian reservations. In addition, the study addressed the directors’ perceptions of how statewide child care quality improvement systems are (or are not) assisting them in their efforts to promote continuity of cultural education and quality child care. Sixteen American Indian directors from child care centers in tribal communities participated in a multiple case study design. The program …
