Review Of A Seat At The Table: Huston Smith In Conversation With Native Americans On Religious Freedom By Huston Smith, Michael D. Mcnally Jan 2007

Review Of A Seat At The Table: Huston Smith In Conversation With Native Americans On Religious Freedom By Huston Smith, Michael D. Mcnally

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

As Native American religious traditions have reached new visibility and vitality over the last forty years, it is clear that constitutionally protected religious liberty has not extended to Native American communities. This is no mere matter of a tragic past; it is of currency today as a human rights concern. Indeed, two landmark cases by which the Rehnquist Court shrank the reach of constitutional protection for religious minorities generally involved Peyote practices of the Native American Church and management of sacred sites on federal lands.

A Seat at the Table explores the wide range of these contemporary issues, from protection …

A Construction Of Twelve Lifelong Learners’ Perspectives: An In-Depth, Naturalistic Study Of Self-Integration Of Learning, Marvin L. Hunt Nov 2006

A Construction Of Twelve Lifelong Learners’ Perspectives: An In-Depth, Naturalistic Study Of Self-Integration Of Learning, Marvin L. Hunt

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This research focuses on understanding people who have chosen to learn throughout their lives. A broad question guided this investigation: What is the rich, lived, lifelong learning experience from the individual’s perspective? This question allowed each participant freedom to explore and define issues he/she considered important relative to lifelong learning. Twelve lifelong learners from a wide range of backgrounds, ages, and experience were serially selected using maximum variation sampling. Most qualitative research uses a priori questions aimed at a specific topic, limiting participants’ discussion. In this study, however, grand tour questions prompted each participant to offer information about lifelong learning …

The Institutional Repository At The University Of Nebraska–Lincoln: Its First Year Of Operations, Paul Royster

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The institutional repository (hereafter IR) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (hereafter UNL) began operations July 1, 2005. At the close of our first year we had mounted 2,397 articles, which had been downloaded 58,743 times; the dissertations collection included 10,117 theses, which had been downloaded 34,862 times. We currently average around 2,000 hits and 700 downloads per day. Usage increases as the semester progresses, and falls during the Christmas break and during the summer. In addition to the various wildlife damage conference proceedings, we had mounted extensive backfiles of the Journal of Parasitology, and the proceedings of the People of …

Locked Out: Locke V. Davey And The Broken Promise Of Equal Access, Richard F. Duncan Aug 2006

Locked Out: Locke V. Davey And The Broken Promise Of Equal Access, Richard F. Duncan

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

This Article analyzed Chief Justice Rehnquist's Footnote Three dictum, and concluded that the Promise Scholarship Program in Davey was clearly designed to encourage Promise Scholars to choose from an infinitely broad array of subjects, viewpoints, and courses of study that make up the marketplace of ideas of higher education in the State of Washington. Since the exclusion of devotional theology majors from the Program was clearly based on the viewpoint from which theology is taught and studied, and since it is clear that government may not discriminate on the basis of viewpoint--even in the context of a funding program--if the …

Reburying The Treasure—Maintaining The Continuity: Two Texts By Śākya Mchog Ldan On The Buddha-Essence, Yaroslav Komarovski Jan 2006

Reburying The Treasure—Maintaining The Continuity: Two Texts By Śākya Mchog Ldan On The Buddha-Essence, Yaroslav Komarovski

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The rich and interconnected universe of Śākya Mchog Ldan’s views, including those on the buddha-essence, cannot be limited to or summarized in a few neat categories. Nevertheless, the following two interrelated ideas are crucial for understanding Śākya Mchog Ldan’s interpretation of the buddha-essence: 1) only Mahāyāna āryas (’phags pa) have the buddha-essence characterized by the purity from adventitious stains (glo bur rnam dag); 2) the buddha-essence is inseparable from the positive qualities (yon tan, guṇa) of a buddha; In his writings, Śākya Mchog Ldan argues against identifying the buddha- essence as a mere natural …

The Third Qui, And Six Ways To Recognize It, Or “Who Happens, Maecenas?”, Thomas Nelson Winter Sep 2005

The Third Qui, And Six Ways To Recognize It, Or “Who Happens, Maecenas?”, Thomas Nelson Winter

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

All Latin students eventually have a problem with qui. To solve it, they need a third qui in their quiver. The problem shows up when they advance into third year, transitioning from Caesar to Roman Comedy, or to the poets. The familiar “who” often leads to nonsense, and they are at a loss. There are three qui’s: the relative pronoun, the interrogative adjective, and the old ablative instrumental, e.g.
1. qui dixit, who spoke
2. qui vir, which man
3. illud qui, that thing by means of which

It is the third that causes problems. …

Women's Studies University Of Nebraska-Lincoln Spring 2005, Joy Ritchie, Carmel Morse Apr 2005

Women's Studies University Of Nebraska-Lincoln Spring 2005, Joy Ritchie, Carmel Morse

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials

Since this is my last column as director of Women's Studies, I want to highlight some important evolutions in the program as I step down in August. At the beginning of this semester, after considerable discussion, the faculty voted to change our name to Women's Award from Judith Hart and Gender Studies Program. This change is consistent with other programs around the country. (The name change is in progress but is not yet official). As faculty and students have discussed this change over the past two years, we have recognized that this is not simply a cosmetic change. Instead it …

Review Of Preserving The Sacred: Historical Perspectives On Ojibwa Midewiwin By Michael Angel, Katherine Pettipas Oct 2004

Review Of Preserving The Sacred: Historical Perspectives On Ojibwa Midewiwin By Michael Angel, Katherine Pettipas

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This volume is a critical historiography of the nature and meaning of the Midewiwin as it was, and still is, practiced by southwestern, western, and northern Anishinaabeg (Ojibwa or Chippewa) in both Canada and the United States. A self-described "culturally sensitive outsider," Angel has approached his subject from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing heavily from religious studies and historic and ethnographic documentation. The origins and functions of the Midewiwin are examined within the contexts of Anishinaabeg religion and society. Angel takes issue with the classification of the Midewiwin as a "revitalization movement" or a "crisis cult" by demonstrating that the "essential …

Court Review: Volume 41, Issue 2 - Recent Civil Decisions Of The U.S. Supreme Court: The 2003-2004 Term, Charles H. Whitebread

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

The civil cases decided by the United States Supreme Court during its last term were headlined by its decisions reasserting the rule of law in the context of detainees in the war on terrorism. In addition, the Court handed down a number of decisions on civil rights, the First Amendment, federalism, presidential power, and civil statutory interpretation. We review those cases here.

Review Of Archbishop A.-A. Tache Of St. Boniface: The "Good Fight" And The Illusive Vision By Raymond J. A. Hue!, Robert Choquette Apr 2004

Review Of Archbishop A.-A. Tache Of St. Boniface: The "Good Fight" And The Illusive Vision By Raymond J. A. Hue!, Robert Choquette

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Alexandre Tache, one of the very first Canadians to join the French Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate who arrived in Canada in 1841, was sent to work in Canada's Northwest in 1845 where he became second bishop of St. Boniface in 1853, and later archbishop. He remained there until his death in 1894, a half-century during which the region was transformed from a vast hunting emporium for furs to a refuge for tens of thousands of Canadian, American, and European settlers brought into the area after 1860 on the rapidly expanding tracks of American and then Canadian railways. Tache built …

Exploring The Inner Landscape Of Teaching: A Program For Faculty Renewal, Libby Falk Jones

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

To improve the quality of faculty lift, Berea College developed a yearlong program exploring teaching as a vocation. Sixteen faculty from different departments participated in the series of seven experiential, dialogic sessions. Participants reported experiencing increased empathy and patience, deeper engagement with their work, a stronger sense of community, and encouragement to meet the challenges of being educators.

Department Of Anthropology And Geography Self-Study Report To The Academic Planning Committee, Department Of Anthropology And Geography Jan 2004

Department Of Anthropology And Geography Self-Study Report To The Academic Planning Committee, Department Of Anthropology And Geography

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

In January of 2001 the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Geography became the Department of Anthropology and Geography. This merger was not requested by members of either unit: it was imposed administratively. Under ideal circumstance, such mergers evolve organically through a history of collaborations from the bottom up. Nevertheless, faculty of each unit had collaborated in a variety of contexts so there was some basis for integration. As one may imagine, one of the first things we set out to accomplish as a newly formed unit was the establishment of a common set of by-laws. After about six …

Review Of Jodi Magness, The Archaeology Of Qumran And The Dead Sea Scrolls, Sidnie White Crawford Jan 2004

Review Of Jodi Magness, The Archaeology Of Qumran And The Dead Sea Scrolls, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

This volume by Jodi Magness is part of a series entitled Studies in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Related Literature, edited by Peter W. Flint, Martin G. Abegg, Jr., and Florentino Garcia Martinez. The purpose o f the series is "to make the latest and best Dead Sea Scrolls scholarship accessible to scholars, students, and the thinking public" (i). Magness has designed her book with that general readership, not the specialist in the field, in mind. It contains no footnotes, very few quotations from the scholarly literature, and its bibliography is gathered and annotated at the end o f each …

Review Of Father Francis M. Craft: Missionary To The Sioux By Thomas W. Foley, Michael F. Steltenkamp Oct 2003

Review Of Father Francis M. Craft: Missionary To The Sioux By Thomas W. Foley, Michael F. Steltenkamp

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The bland title of this biography might not attract the many readers the book deserves since Craft's name is known only from occasional footnotes related to the Ghost Dance religion that ended with tragic bloodletting at Wounded Knee in 1890. Using the priest's journals and researching references contained within them, the author draws from obscurity a life that should inspire scholars to tap similar material reposited in Marquette University's Catholic Indian mission archives. Diaries and journals stored there are a treasure trove of ethnographic and historical information that still awaits baring. Biographers can use Foley's work as a standard to …

A Multi-Perspective Class Project At Oral Roberts University, Andrew Lang, Aimee Raile, Joy Thrall Oct 2003

A Multi-Perspective Class Project At Oral Roberts University, Andrew Lang, Aimee Raile, Joy Thrall

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In 2001, Oral Roberts University launched an honors program. Unlike most honors programs, the ORU program is two-tiered, meaning that the top sixteen to eighteen students in every class are considered fellows and the rest of the students who meet the academic requirements are scholars. ORU requires both fellows and scholars to complete twenty-four hours of honors coursework through designated sections of general education classes. One unique aspect of the program is that the fellows are required to complete five of six special interdisciplinary honors seminars as part of their required twenty-four hours. These classes replace traditional general education courses …

Ancient Way In A New Land: Benedictine Education In The Great Plains, Marielle Frigge O.S.B. Oct 2003

Ancient Way In A New Land: Benedictine Education In The Great Plains, Marielle Frigge O.S.B.

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the first half of the sixth century, an Italian monk, Benedict of Nursia, provided a framework for Christian monastic life. In the last half of the nineteenth century, his descendants arrived in the Great Plains, part of the westward movement of Christian missionaries in North America. What could this ancient way of life offer to a new land of Native tribes and immigrant farmers, traders, and soldiers? And what might this new land contribute to the shaping of a uniquely American form of monastic life?

These Benedictine men and women brought with them centuries of experience as learners and …

Learning Curves: Fieldwork As Context For Interrogating The Dynamics Of Work In American Culture, Judith Hiltner Apr 2003

Learning Curves: Fieldwork As Context For Interrogating The Dynamics Of Work In American Culture, Judith Hiltner

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

For the past quarter century, eloquent voices in the academy have articulated the value of hands on experiences in the workplace to reinforce and interrogate classroom learning. Internships and other types of fieldwork experiences enable students to test career options, improve their employment potential, challenge assumptions underlying theoretic approaches to the discipline, gain familiarity with the language and ethnography of the professional work places they plan to enter, and enlarge their sense of the role of research in their fields. Aprotracted experience that counterpoints theoretical and applied dimensions of a discipline can nurture critical habits of mind that will persist …

Review Of Schiffman & Vanderkam, Eds., Encyclopedia Of The Dead Sea Scrolls, Sidnie White Crawford Apr 2003

Review Of Schiffman & Vanderkam, Eds., Encyclopedia Of The Dead Sea Scrolls, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The aim of the Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls, according to its editors, is “to encompass all scholarship on the scrolls to date, making use of the research of many scholars of international reputation” (x). The word “scrolls” is used here in its broad meaning to refer to all the collections of ancient manuscripts found in the region of the Dead Sea and the Judaean wilderness in the twentieth century. These collections include the Qumran Scrolls, the Samaria Papyri, the Bar Kokhba texts, Masada and Khirbet Mird. Thus, although the Encyclopedia is more limited in geographical and chronological …

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Retrospective And Prospective, Sidnie White Crawford Jan 2003

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Retrospective And Prospective, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The Dead Sea Scrolls—in the popular imagination, the very name conjures up scandal, intrigue and mystery. Tales of illicit excavations, clandestine purchases, and midnight trips to Beirut, all with the sound of gunfire crackling in the background, abound in the lore of the Scrolls and the scholars associated with them. While visions of Roland de Vaux as a French Indiana Jones may be the product of an overheated imagination, the actual story of the discovery of the Scrolls is nevertheless an exciting one in the annals of archaeology.

To say that the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls has revolutionized …

Geography Of Religion And Belief Systems, Robert H. Stoddard, Carolyn V. Prorok Jan 2003

Geography Of Religion And Belief Systems, Robert H. Stoddard, Carolyn V. Prorok

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

Spatial and environmental dimensions of religious behavior, artefacts, and attitudes are grist for the geographer’s intellectual mill because spiritually motivated convictions and actions play an important role in human affairs. It is not surprising, therefore, that the geography of religion and belief systems is an important, emerging field of study. We commence this chapter with a definition of the field, particularly as it entails distinctions that arise out of the highly personal nature that religious belief is accorded in the academy and society at large. A limited review and summary of trends in the field over the past decade follows, …

Court Review: Volume 39, Issue 3 - Trial By Metaphor: Rhetoric, Innovation, And The Juridical Text, Benjamin L. Berger Oct 2002

Court Review: Volume 39, Issue 3 - Trial By Metaphor: Rhetoric, Innovation, And The Juridical Text, Benjamin L. Berger

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

The judicial decision-making process is not one for which resolution arises from counting, measuring, or weighing. Rather, the courtroom is a field for debate about the interpretation and application of values as embodied in or reflected by the law. Decisions reached in court are judgments and not mathematical conclusions in that the inherently contestable nature of the issues at stake precludes an outcome that is selfevident to all. As such, although there is an element of factfinding that emerges in a judicial opinion, there is also always a subjective valuation of the principles at stake; to draw on Socrates, there …

Johannes Buxtorf Westphalus Und Die Erforschung Des Judentums In Der Neuzeit, Stephen G. Burnett Mar 2002

Johannes Buxtorf Westphalus Und Die Erforschung Des Judentums In Der Neuzeit, Stephen G. Burnett

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
