Suicide: Unpredictable And Unavoidable—Proposed Guidelines Provide Rational Test For Physician's Liability, Phyllis Coleman, Ronald A. Shellow Jan 1992

Suicide: Unpredictable And Unavoidable—Proposed Guidelines Provide Rational Test For Physician's Liability, Phyllis Coleman, Ronald A. Shellow

Nebraska Law Review

The physician who treats a suicidal patient faces real life-or-death decisions. The primary decision depends on his professional evaluation of the likelihood that his patient will take his own life. If the physician concludes that suicide is imminent, medical ethics and the law require he take steps to protect his patient. Failing to take appropriate protective action exposes the physician to legal liability. The physician owes a duty to his patient, but defining parameters of this duty and methods to satisfy it are not clear. Neither the legal system nor current medical knowledge or practice establishes guidelines to aid the …

Keeping Secrets That Harm Others: Medical Standards Illuminate Lawyer's Dilemma, Shelly Stucky Watson Jan 1992

Keeping Secrets That Harm Others: Medical Standards Illuminate Lawyer's Dilemma, Shelly Stucky Watson

Nebraska Law Review

In routine cases, physician-patient and attorney-client confidentiality is uncontroversial. Confidentiality protects patients and clients, and is thought to enable the professional systems to work. Nevertheless, situations exist in which strict confidentiality may conflict with society's interests. Both common law and statutory law in medical literature recognize a duty to warn identifiable third persons when a patient threatens to harm them. It is the thesis of this article that a parallel duty to warn third persons of impending harm should exist in the attorney-client sphere. The following discussion focuses on the comparison of the medical duty to disclose and the lawyer's …

Examining The Link Between Leader-Member Exchange And Subordinate Performance: The Role Of Task Analyzability And Variety As Moderators, Kenneth J. Dunegan, Dennis Duchon, Mary Uhl-Bien Jan 1992

Examining The Link Between Leader-Member Exchange And Subordinate Performance: The Role Of Task Analyzability And Variety As Moderators, Kenneth J. Dunegan, Dennis Duchon, Mary Uhl-Bien

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Results from a field study with 152 members of a large urban hospital indicate that the relationship between the quality of leader-member exchange (LMX) and subordinate performance is moderated by perceptions of task analyzability and variety: LMX and performance are found to be significantly related when task challenge is either very high or very low. Under these task conditions, data indicate that there is a positive link between LMX and performance such that a higher quality leader-member exchange correlates with higher levels of performance. On the other hand, analyses also reveal that when tasks are perceived to be moderately challenging, …

Elements Of Plane Symmetry In Oriental Carpets, Carol Bier Jan 1992

Elements Of Plane Symmetry In Oriental Carpets, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Historically, in the Islamic world from Spain to Indonesia, two-dimensional repeat patterns have served as primary means for organizing color and space. The ornamentation of architecture may involve the modifications of a two-dimensional pattern in its application to a three-dimensional surface. All of the uses of pattern, appearing as well on ceramics and metalwork, in book illumination, and textiles, rely upon the repetition of complex or simple designs to form overall repeat patterns of apparent complexity and intricacy. Yet within all the visual diversity and within the variability of regional traditions throughout the Islamic world, there is a common visual …

Territorial Behavior Of Florida Sandhill Cranes In The Okefenokee Swamp, Laurel A. Bennett, Alan J. Bennett Jan 1992

Territorial Behavior Of Florida Sandhill Cranes In The Okefenokee Swamp, Laurel A. Bennett, Alan J. Bennett

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

Intraspecific and territorial interactions of adult Florida sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis pratensis) were studied in the Okefenokee Swamp, Georgia 1985-87. Adult pairs occupied exclusive and defended territories year round. We did not observe social behavior or flocking by adult cranes. Reproductive success did not influence the fidelity of pairs to their territories or aggressiveness toward other cranes. Females that lost mates retained their territories and eventually re-paired. Territorality was most intense during fall and winter and may have been necessary to maintain feeding areas. Habitat conditions in the Okefenokee Swamp may dictate territorality, not sociality, as a strategy …

In Stories We Trust: Studies Of The Validity Of Autobiographies, George S. Howard, Arthur C. Maerlender, Paul R. Myers, Tom D. Curtin Jan 1992

In Stories We Trust: Studies Of The Validity Of Autobiographies, George S. Howard, Arthur C. Maerlender, Paul R. Myers, Tom D. Curtin

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

There is a dearth of research addressing the validity of life stories, or autobiographies. In part, this is because it is unclear how such data sources might be validated. This article recommends two differ-ent perspectives for obtaining evidence relevant to the validity of autobiographical data. A study is conducted from each of these perspectives, and multiple validity estimates are obtained in each in-vestigation. The construct validity of standard psychological constructs (e.g., assertiveness, trustwor-thiness) obtained in Study 1 from autobiographies was equal to that of standard instruments designed to assess these constructs. Evidence for the validity of life themes, extracted from …

Assessment Of Anxiety In Social Interaction And Being Observed By Others: The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale And The Social Phobia Scale, Richard G. Heimberg, Gregory P. Mueller, Craig S. Holt, Debra A. Hope, Michael R. Liebowitz Jan 1992

Assessment Of Anxiety In Social Interaction And Being Observed By Others: The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale And The Social Phobia Scale, Richard G. Heimberg, Gregory P. Mueller, Craig S. Holt, Debra A. Hope, Michael R. Liebowitz

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Social phobia has become a focus of increased research since its inclusion in DSM-III. However, assessment of social phobia has remained an underdeveloped area, especially self-report assessment. Clinical researchers have relied on measures that were developed on college populations, and these measures may not provide sufficient coverage of the range of situations feared by social phobic individuals. There is a need for additional instruments that consider differences in the types of situations (social interaction vs. situations involving observation by others) that may be feared by social phobics and between subgroups of social phobic patients. This study provides validational data on …

Strike-Induced Chemosensory Searching: Variation Among Lizards, Royce E. Ballinger, Nathaniel R. Coady, Joseph M. Prokop, Julio A. Lemos-Espinal Jan 1992

Strike-Induced Chemosensory Searching: Variation Among Lizards, Royce E. Ballinger, Nathaniel R. Coady, Joseph M. Prokop, Julio A. Lemos-Espinal

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Strike-induced chemosensory searching (SICS) was found in two families of lizards (Teiidae, Anguidae) but not in two other lizard families (Scincidae, Iguanidae). Experiments on another family (Xenosauridae) were inconclusive as to its possession of SICS. The rate of tongue-flicking was significantly increased after a simulated prey strike compared to controls in Cnemidophorus sexlineatus and Barisia imbricata. SICS may be part of a complex foraging strategy evolved in certain reptiles rather than part of a generalized chemosensory behavior because two species of skinks did not exhibit SICS in spite of a well developed vomeronasal olfactory apparatus and known abilities to …

Self-Management And Team-Making In Cross-Functional Work Teams: Discovering The Keys To Becoming An Integrated Team, Mary Uhl-Bien, George B. Graen Jan 1992

Self-Management And Team-Making In Cross-Functional Work Teams: Discovering The Keys To Becoming An Integrated Team, Mary Uhl-Bien, George B. Graen

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Project teams are rapidly becoming the primary mechanisms for innovation and change in modern organizations. As such, they are designed to capitalize on leadership and integrated cross-functional teamwork and to negate subordination and individual gamesmanship. Unfortunately, research on cross-functional project teams is scarce and largely atheoretical. The increasing use of these project teams by modern organizations, however, calls for theory development in this area. In the present paper, self-management and team-making models are applied to cross-functional project designs to develop a theoretical framework for the investigation of teamwork effectiveness for integrated cross-functional project teams. Future issues for theory development and …

Perceptions Of An Innovative Climate: Examining The Role Of Divisional Affiliation, Work Group Interaction, And Leader/Subordinate Exchange, Kenneth Dunegan, Pamela S. Tierney, Dennis Duchon Jan 1992

Perceptions Of An Innovative Climate: Examining The Role Of Divisional Affiliation, Work Group Interaction, And Leader/Subordinate Exchange, Kenneth Dunegan, Pamela S. Tierney, Dennis Duchon

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Results from a cross-sectional field study with 198 members of an international chemical company suggest that divisional affiliation, work group interactions (WGX), and the quality of exchange between leader and subordinate (LMX) significantly predict employee perceptions of climate factors believed to foster innovative activities. Tests also indicate that LMX remains a significant predictor of five of the six climate variables measured, even after controlling for divisional affiliation and the quality of work group exchanges (WGX). Further, analyses reveal that the interaction between WGX and LMX accounts for significant and unique variance on all six of the climate factors studied in …

Categorizing Professional Discourse: Engineering, Administrative, And Technical/Professional Writing, Barbara Couture Jan 1992

Categorizing Professional Discourse: Engineering, Administrative, And Technical/Professional Writing, Barbara Couture

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Rhetorical categories can and should be developed by scholars of professional writing to identify how values held within professions constrain the ways discourse is interpreted in organizational settings. Empirical research (conducted by the author and others), discourse theory, and pedagogical practice in professional writing strongly suggest that at least three categories of professional writing exist: engineering, administrative, and technical/professional writing. The author demonstrates this claim and distinguishes the characteristics of these three categories. Engineering writing is shown to respond to professional values of scientific objectivity and professional judgment as well as to corporate interests. Administrative writing reflects the locus of …

Consultant And Client Outcomes Of Competency-Based Behavioral Consultation Training, Susan M. Sheridan Jan 1992

Consultant And Client Outcomes Of Competency-Based Behavioral Consultation Training, Susan M. Sheridan

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

This article examines how despite increasing demands and empirical support for consultation, its actual practice in schools continues to be limited. One barrier to the systematic provision of consultation services in the schools may be the lack of applied training provided to preservice individuals in graduate preparation programs. A model of behavioral consultation training which extends previous competency- based programs is presented. Trained five doctoral students in school psychology in behavioral consultation procedures using written manuals, videotape models, behavioral rehearsal, performance feedback, self-monitoring, and generalization training. Following university-based practice with trained consultees and student teachers, consultants were assigned consultation cases …

Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Early Childhood Ability Measures Within A Model Of Personal Competence, Richard F. Ittenbach, Amy N. Spiegel, Kevin S. Mcgrew, Robert H. Bruininks Jan 1992

Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Early Childhood Ability Measures Within A Model Of Personal Competence, Richard F. Ittenbach, Amy N. Spiegel, Kevin S. Mcgrew, Robert H. Bruininks

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present study tested Greenspan’s model of personal competence with data obtained from the Early Screening Profiles, a nationally standardized preschool screening battery designed to measure the general functioning level of children 2–7 years of age. Of the five models tested (three a priori and two a posteriori), three models produced results indicative of a good fit. These findings support the use of Greenspan’s model of personal competence as a framework for understanding the nature of developing abilities in young children as well as for the improvement of classification and diag-nosis of children with special needs.

Review Of: Pablo María Garrido, O.Carm. San Juan De La Cruz Y Francisco Di Yepes: En Torno A La Biografía De Los Dos Hermanos. 1989, Elizabeth Wilhelmsen

Review Of: Steven Payne, O.C.D. John Of The Cross And The Cognitive Value Of Mysticism: An Analysis Of Sanjuanist Teaching And Its Philosophical Implications For Contemporary Discussion Of Mystical Experience, 1990, Elizabeth Wilhelmsen

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

In this study Steven Payne argues that mystical states have objective cognitive content and that consequently mysticism "has a significant bearing on the justification of religious faith ... " (p. ix). The book is divided into two main sections: the first is dedicated to the life and teachings of St John of the Cross; and the second is an attempt to "justify belief in the cognitive value of mystical and religious experience" by means of what Payne calls an "explanatory inference" (p. xiii).

Towards A European Space Agency, Mark Ii? The Space Program Of The Former Soviet Union And The Commonwealth Of Independent States, Frans G. Von Der Dunk Jan 1992

Towards A European Space Agency, Mark Ii? The Space Program Of The Former Soviet Union And The Commonwealth Of Independent States, Frans G. Von Der Dunk

Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications

Out of the many historical political events of the last few years, in terms of outer space and outer space law the final demise of the Soviet Union in December 1991 no doubt was the most important. One of the two superpowers in space disappeared as a state never to return. The fifteen republics formerly comprising the Soviet Union entered the international community of states more or less in its stead, eleven of them willing - so far - to remain together within a framework for cooperation ominously named "Commonwealth of Independent States".

As to outer space, nine of those …

The Ear’S Versus The Eye’S Potential To Assess Characteristics Of Numeric Data: Are We Too Visuocentric?, John H. Flowers, Terry A. Hauer Jan 1992

The Ear’S Versus The Eye’S Potential To Assess Characteristics Of Numeric Data: Are We Too Visuocentric?, John H. Flowers, Terry A. Hauer

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

A single experiment studied how effectively information about the central tendency, variability, and shape of numeric data distributions could be conveyed to statistically knowledgeable subjects. The data were summarized by visual histograms, auditory histograms that coded numeric value as pitch on the musical scale, and five-note auditory analogues of a box-whisker display that coded the minimum, quartile, and maximum scores as musical notes. Regression and multidimensional scaling analysis of judgments of dissimilarity between distributions showed that auditory depiction provides a highly effective means of conveying information about distributional characteristics. Auditory depicition may be a useful alternative to traditional visual graphics.

The Gunman Downstairs, Michael R. Hill Jan 1992

The Gunman Downstairs, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

EXACTLY 24 HOURS ago, in this building, nearly two dozen of your fellow students fled from Room 112, downstairs, in mortal terror of being murdered by a classmate in a senior-level actuarial science class. Newspaper accounts of this event present a particularly vivid example of the frame concepts that Erving Goffman explicates in Frame Analysis. In particular, Arthur McElroy’s entrance into Room 112 was a “guided doing” by which he willfully intended to kill at least a few, if not all, of his classmates.

“For a second,” said a student in the class, “I just sat there in a daze.” …

Nebraska Law Review

United States v. Matthew Sylvester Two Bulls was a case of first impression in the federal circuit courts addressing the admissibility of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) profiling evidence. The United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, implementing the commonsense standard adopted in People v. Castro, promulgated a five-prong test to be used by trial courts in pre-trial hearings when determining the admissibility of DNA profiling evidence. In doing so, the court assures that DNA profiling data offered into evidence in that circuit will be among the most highly scrutinized in the country. This Note analyzes the court's holding …
