Overlap Of Organizations: Corporate Transorganization And Veblen's Thesis On Higher Education, F. Gregory Hayden Mar 1992

Overlap Of Organizations: Corporate Transorganization And Veblen's Thesis On Higher Education, F. Gregory Hayden

College of Business: Faculty Publications

This article is built upon the legacy from three of Thorstein Veblen's theories. The first may be best summarized by Martin Gellen who wrote:
Veblen was the first economist to recognize that management was an important factor of production in modem business enterprise, and nowhere was this more evident than in the rise of the large corporation. ... These new enterprises took over from the market the coordination and integration of the flow of goods and services all the way from the production of the raw materials through the several processes of production to the sale of the ultimate consumer. …

Selective Associations: A Methodological Critique, Rick A. Bevins Feb 1992

Selective Associations: A Methodological Critique, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

A crossover design must be used and a crossover data pattern must result if selective associations are to be inferred. In addition, three other methodological criteria must be met. (1) Only the nature of the reinforcer should be varied, (2) nonassociative explanations must be ruled out, and (3) the differences in behavior controlled by the conditioned stimuli (CSs) must be caused by a learning difference and not a performance difference. Experimental evidence typically cited as demonstrating the existence of selective associations was reviewed here and found to fall short of meeting the criteria stated herein. I conclude that interpretations invoking …

When manuscripts are evaluated for possible publication in Great Plains Research, the editorial panel has the question of “place” firmly in mind. The distinction is of a place rather than in a place. Residence of the author is certainly not a prerequisite. While it might seem that the best regional scholarship comes from the region, the cosmopolitan character of the academy belies that generalization. Nor is a study done in a region necessarily of the region. A fine paper may result from a survey of residents of Kansas, for example, without any insight into whether the location makes any …

Rats’ Location During Conditioned Suppression Training, Rick A. Bevins, John J. B. Ayres Jan 1992

Rats’ Location During Conditioned Suppression Training, Rick A. Bevins, John J. B. Ayres

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Freezing is often cited as the interfering behavior responsible for barpress conditioned-suppression. However, auditory cues that precede shock can evoke more freezing than can visual cues despite producing similar suppression. In two experiments, we sought to resolve this paradox by measuring rats’ location in the box in addition to recording freezing during conditioned-suppression training to tones and lights. Tone evoked more freezing than light but similar suppression. During both cues, rats left the bar and dipper areas and moved to the lower middle and rear of the box. When the bar was then removed and the dipper entry sealed, the …

Consultation And Teaming: Problem Solving Among Educators, Parents, And Support Personnel, Stephen N. Elliott, Susan M. Sheridan Jan 1992

Consultation And Teaming: Problem Solving Among Educators, Parents, And Support Personnel, Stephen N. Elliott, Susan M. Sheridan

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

This article examines the nature and use of consultation and in-school teams in the delivery of psychoeducational services for children experiencing difficulties in school. Underlying both consultation and school-based teams is an explicit problem-solving process that has been shown to facilitate problem resolution for a target child and can also advance the knowledge of the adults who participate in the process. Practical, step-by-step illustrations of problem solving within a consultative relationship are provided and extended to team problem solving. Research literature supporting these practices also is briefly reviewed.

Transforming The Role Of The Social Security Administration, Colleen E. Medill Jan 1992

Transforming The Role Of The Social Security Administration, Colleen E. Medill

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Social Security benefits were never designed to be one’s sole source of retirement income. Due to fiscal constraints, it is likely that Social Security benefits in the future will be less generous when the young workers of today retire. In the future, retirement income security will depend heavily on wealth accumulated during one’s working years. The role of the Social Security Administration must be transformed to one of motivating, informing, and educating the young workers of today about retirement financial planning so that they can adequately plan and prepare for a financially secure retirement tomorrow.

A Comparison Of Organizational, Structural, And Relationship Effects On Subordinates’ Upward Influence Choices, Kathleen J. Krone Jan 1992

A Comparison Of Organizational, Structural, And Relationship Effects On Subordinates’ Upward Influence Choices, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This research examined the extent to which organizational membership, centralization of authority, and subordinates’ perceptions of supervisory relationship quality affected how frequently they report using different types of tactics in their upward influence attempts. Participants from five different organizations were surveyed. A typology of upward influence tactics was created based on the extent to which: (1) the means employed to attempt influence are open or closed, and (2) the desired outcomes are openly expressed or left undisclosed. The resulting dependent variable consisted of three types of tactics: open upward influence, strategic upward influence, and political upward influence. MANOVA results indicated …

Situational Domains Of Social Phobia, Craig S. Holt, Richard G. Heimberg, Debra A. Hope, Michael R. Liebowitz Jan 1992

Situational Domains Of Social Phobia, Craig S. Holt, Richard G. Heimberg, Debra A. Hope, Michael R. Liebowitz

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Although social phobia is defined as severe anxiety in social situations, little is known about the range or prevalence of social situations that elicit anxiety in social phobic individuals. The present study developed the concept of situational domains, groups of similar situations that may provoke anxiety in subsets of social anxious persons. Four conceptually derived situational domains were examined: formal speaking/interaction, informal speaking/interaction, observation by others, and assertion. Ninety-one social phobic patients were classified as anxiety-positive or anxiety-negative within each situational domain, varying inclusion criteria of anxiety experienced in each situation and the number of anxiety-producing situations within a domain. …

Validity Of The Distinction Between Generalized Social Phobia And Avoidant Personality Disorder, James D. Herbert, Debra A. Hope, Alan S. Bellack Jan 1992

Validity Of The Distinction Between Generalized Social Phobia And Avoidant Personality Disorder, James D. Herbert, Debra A. Hope, Alan S. Bellack

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Disorders of pervasive social anxiety and inhibition are divided into 2 categories, generalized social phobia (GSP) and avoidant personality disorder (APD). We explored the discriminative validity of this categorization by examining the comorbidity of GSP and APD and by comparing these groups on anxiety level, social skills, dysfunctional cognitions, impairment in functioning, and presence of concurrent disorders. Results from 23 subjects showed high comorbidity of the 2 diagnoses: All subjects who met criteria for APD also met criteria for GSP. APD was associated with greater social anxiety, impairment in functioning, and comorbidity with other psychopathology, but no differences in social …

Behavioral Parent-Teacher Consultation: Conceptual And Research Considerations, Susan M. Sheridan, Thomas R. Kratochwill Jan 1992

Behavioral Parent-Teacher Consultation: Conceptual And Research Considerations, Susan M. Sheridan, Thomas R. Kratochwill

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

The importance of involving parents in their children’s education has been documented consistently. Likewise, school psychology as a profession traditionally has recognized the importance of working actively and collaboratively with parents. Little conceptual or empirical work has been reported, however, that links home and school individuals systematically in collaborative problem-solving consultation. Behavioral consultation provides a useful framework for working within and between family and school systems to involve parents and teachers together in cooperative problem-solving, with a focus on the interacting systems in a child’s life. The potential advantages of having both parents and teachers serve as consultees are that …

G92-1078 Work And Family: Today's Juggling Act, Hrebert G. Lingren Jan 1992

G92-1078 Work And Family: Today's Juggling Act, Hrebert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Working families are under stress as they try to balance demands of job, children and spouse. Strategies are needed to prevent stress overload and burnout.

Over the past 25 years, women's and men's roles have changed dramatically. Today's women are better educated, have better paying jobs and are having fewer children. Women represent 45 percent of the labor force, nearly 80 percent work outside the home and 75 percent of mothers of young children are employed.

As women have entered and stayed in the work force in ever-increasing numbers, the dual-earner family has emerged. Married couple earners comprise more than …

G92-1117 The Sandwich Generation: A Cluttered Nest, Herbert G. Lingren, Jayne Decker Jan 1992

G92-1117 The Sandwich Generation: A Cluttered Nest, Herbert G. Lingren, Jayne Decker

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The needs of three generations and solutions to resolve their stresses are covered here.

Lisa and Bruce both have careers. They have a teen-age son, a college student daughter, a recently divorced daughter with a one-year-old child, and an elderly mother who needs an increasing amount of caregiving, all living in the same household. They are classic members of the sandwich generation.

In the 1990s, people live longer, they postpone marriage, more children are living at home to go to college, and an increasing number of adult children are returning home after a divorce or loss of job. Consequently, larger …

Social Preference Of Four Cross-Foster Reared Sandhill Cranes, Thomas A. Mahan, Brenda S. Simmers Jan 1992

Social Preference Of Four Cross-Foster Reared Sandhill Cranes, Thomas A. Mahan, Brenda S. Simmers

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

Four greater sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis tabida) were hatched and reared individually by 4 non-sandhill crane pairs: 2 by white-naped crane (G. vipio) pairs, 1 by a Siberian crane (G. leucogeranus) pair, and 1 by a red-crowned crane (G. japonensis) pair. After 1 year the sandhill cranes (2 male and 2 female) were placed in enclosed pens adjacent to an oppositesexed, same-age bird of the foster species on 1 side and an opposite-sexed, same-age conspecific on the other side. Data were collected throughout 1 year and included proximity between test and choice …

An Introduction To The Five-Factor Model And Its Applications, Robert R. Mccrae, Oliver P. John Jan 1992

An Introduction To The Five-Factor Model And Its Applications, Robert R. Mccrae, Oliver P. John

United States Public Health Resources

The five-factor model of personality is a hierarchical organization of personality traits in terms of five basic dimensions: Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience. Research using both natural language adjectives and theoretically based personality questionnaires supports the comprehensiveness of the model and its applicability across observers and cultures. This article summarizes the history of the model and its supporting evidence; discusses conceptions of the nature of the factors; and outlines an agenda for theorizing about the origins and operation of the factors. We argue that the model should prove useful both for individual assessment and for the elucidation …

Fragments Of Everyday Life, Karen Jenson Rutherford Jan 1992

Fragments Of Everyday Life, Karen Jenson Rutherford

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In my work I am concerned with the general concepts of movement and change and specifically with the profoundness of the idea that we are touched by fiber from the moment of birth until the moment of death. This accessibility of textiles combined with the vast historical foundation of textiles allows for abundant exploration as an artist.

In her book, On Weaving, Anni Albers (1965) defines weaving as "the making of a pliable plane" (19). She further describes six structures used to create this pliable plane. They are interlacing (which we normally think of as weaving), plaiting or braiding, looping, …

Bbc Television's Film Of Adam Bede, Kathleen Adams Jan 1992

Bbc Television's Film Of Adam Bede, Kathleen Adams

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

This adaption was not for the academic, the scholar or the purist. As none of these, I admit that, with reservations, I enjoyed the film.

There were some very good things about it. The setting was very attractive (Stanway in the Cotswolds for much of the action because it is one of the least changed parts of England) and the photography superb, particularly in the Chase when the sunlight filtering through the trees made an extremely pretty picture. The fight between Arthur and Adam was well staged. lain Glen as Adam portrayed the strength and integrity of the character convincingly; …

Review Of Pipe, Bible, And Peyote Among The Oglala Sioux: A Study In Religious Identity, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith Jan 1992

Review Of Pipe, Bible, And Peyote Among The Oglala Sioux: A Study In Religious Identity, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Pipe, Bible, and Peyote among the Oglala Sioux is a republication of a 1980 manuscript published in the Stockholm Studies in Comparative Religion. Steinmetz, a Jesuit priest, spent twenty years (1961-1981) on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where he served as clergyman and participated, observed, and reflected on the unique constellation of modem Lakota religion. Steinmetz outlines the complexity of different religious identities among the Sioux, to include: the traditional "pure" non-acculturative beliefs and its practitioners, reflected in the American Indian Movement's political emphasis on a return to indigenous practices; "Ecumenist I," designating Lakota Christians who practice both …

Battered Pioneers: Jules Sandoz And The Physical Abuse Of Wives On The American Frontier, Betsy Downey Jan 1992

Battered Pioneers: Jules Sandoz And The Physical Abuse Of Wives On The American Frontier, Betsy Downey

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

One of the most compelling aspects of Mari Sandoz' biography of her father, OldJules, is her account of the violence that Jules Sandoz inflicted upon his family. Jules Sandoz had left his native Switzerland in a fit of temper and ended up in northwestern Nebraska in 1884. Well educated and from a well-to-do professional family, he was nevertheless a character by any standards. He had a violent temper matched by unflagging paranoia and contentiousness. He was remarkable for personal filth and filthy stories. But he was also a gregarious center of community life, an outstanding horticulturalist, a voracious reader …

The Mystery Of Francis Jeffrey Dickens, N.W.M.P., And Eric Nicol's Dickens Of The Mounted, Robert Thacker Jan 1992

The Mystery Of Francis Jeffrey Dickens, N.W.M.P., And Eric Nicol's Dickens Of The Mounted, Robert Thacker

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Almost from its inception in 1873, but certainly since its "Great March" west during the summer of 1874 across "the Great Lone Land" of the Plains that had been the Hudson's Bay Company's domain only a few years before, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has been among the world's most famous corporate entities; it is, perhaps, the most famous police force. 2 Its reputation is rooted in the very real heroism of its early years and the high standards of excellent service it has had since then; but the mythic quality of that reputation-as a cadre of judicious superheroes-has been …
