Review Of The Cherokees: A Population History, Cynthia E. Willis
Review Of The Cherokees: A Population History, Cynthia E. Willis
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Russell Thornton provides a scholarly and comprehensive review of the population variations of an American Indian tribe after contact first with European and then United States' cultural, institutional, and economic policies. He notes population fluctuations along with historical events that occurred after first contact. Governmental policies including accommodation, paternalism, assimilation, extermination, and relocation and isolation of the Cherokees clearly affected population totals. Thornton concludes by acknowledging the Cherokees' own never-ending search for self-determination and viability.
Integrating Part-Time Faculty Into The Academic Community, George Drops
Integrating Part-Time Faculty Into The Academic Community, George Drops
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
This article presents seven ideas on how to integrate part-time faculty into the academic community and help them deal with their feelings of isolation and loneliness. The key role of faculty development program directors is identified as well as specific strategies for working with part-time faculty. These ideas are based upon the author's experience as both a part-time and full-time faculty member, as well as a director of faculty development programs, and upon several surveys conducted among part-time faculty.

Faculty Development's Role In Promoting An Inclusive Community: Addressing Sexual Orientation, Ann S. Ferren, William W. Geller
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Faculty development programs have been at the forefront for the last decade in confronting new issues related to teaching and learning. These collective efforts have encouraged faculty to engage more directly and more deeply with students and ideas. Central to each of these efforts has been self-reflection and thoughtful analysis of the issues. Sexual orientation has not been a significant part of that personal study or dialogue. For those of us committed to strengthening our academic communities, recognizing this exclusion of the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community demands that we work to reduce the barriers. This will mean a renewed …
Creating A "Tqm" Classroom Through Cooperative Learning, Barbara Millis
Creating A "Tqm" Classroom Through Cooperative Learning, Barbara Millis
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Two important trends in higher education-Total Quality Management and Cooperative Learning-happily result in compatible and creative classroom approaches. In fact, much of the TQM theory is predicated on the noncompetitive teamsork that forms the heart of the cooperative learning movement. This paper discusses how instructors using cooperative learning activities simultaneously create a TQM classroom.

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Faculty Development is an emerging field for institutions of higher education; therefore, the procedure for recruiting center directors and faculty developers has not been carefully examined or published. Constructing or reviewing resumes, curriculum vitae, or application portfolios is still an uncharted area in our profession. Information about these procedures is currently available only in the experiences of employers and potential employees for positions in faculty development. The objective of this article is to begin the process of accumulating useful criteria for employees and employers to find the right match of needs and qualifications. As a unique field in the academic …
Global Social Security: How The Rules Are Changing In Certain Countries, Robert J. Myers
Global Social Security: How The Rules Are Changing In Certain Countries, Robert J. Myers
Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)
Social security programs (i.e., national pension systems) differ widely between countries. This is only natural, and desirable, because of varying social and economic conditions and philosophies. This paper discusses some of the general worldwide trends, such as the equal treatment of men and women, increases in the normal retirement age, projection of future costs, and the different philosophies of social security. Some of the interesting and unique changes recently made in selected countries-Canada, Chile, Eastern European countries, Germany, Japan, People's Republic of China, Saudi Arabia, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, United Kingdom, and United States-are described.

1. Matching Measurement Instruction To Classroom-Based Evaluation: Perceived Discrepancies, Needs, And Challenges, Arlen R. Gullickson
Teacher Training in Measurement and Assessment Skills
Teacher knowledge about measurement, testing practices, and what teachers should be taught have been recurrent topics of concern in the past two and a half decades. Conant (1963) first captured measurement professionals' interest with his book The Education of American Teachers. That book stimulated a National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME) symposium regarding the implications of his recommendations for measurement instruction. Papers presented at the meeting were published in the first volume of the Journal of Educational Measurement (JEM). Thus, in a sense, the issue before us is one of the most enduring in the NCME organization.

6. Teachers' Testing Knowledge, Skills, And Practices, Ronald N. Marso, Fred L. Pigge
Teacher Training in Measurement and Assessment Skills
Teachers' testing practices, as reflected in such activities as stating desired learner outcomes, grouping pupils, instigating study activities, and providing feedback for monitoring teaching and learning, are an integral component of models of instruction (Brophy & Good, 1986; Rosenshine, 1985). The testing and assessment process within learning models is variously described as providing practice, review, consolidation of learning, knowledge of results, feedback for redirecting efforts, feelings of accomplishment, a focus for efforts, etc. Relatedly, Crooks (1988) asserts that testing/evaluation is one of the most potent forces influencing education. Also, Elton and Laurillard (1979), in describing the impact of classroom testing …

Braesch V. Union Insurance Co., 237 Neb. 44, 464 N.W.2d 769 (1991) Policy Rationales Of The Bad Faith Cause Of Action And Implications To Non-Insurance Commercial Contracts, Steven B. Fillman
Nebraska Law Review
In Braesch v. Union Insurance Co., the Nebraska Supreme Court first recognized the tort of bad faith denial of first party insurance claims. Nebraska was the thirty-sixth jurisdiction to recognize a cause of action for bad faith in first-party cases. This Note begins with an overview of the development of the law of bad faith in insurance. It discusses the earlier adoption of the bad faith tort action in situations where liability insurers breached their duty to settle claims in good faith. It further discusses why other courts transferred the third party insurer's obligation to deal in good faith …

Promoting Therepeutic Objectives Through Lb 518: A Sane Amendment To Nebraska Law Governing The Disposition Of Insanity Acquittees, Sherin S. Vitro
Nebraska Law Review
LB 518 represents the most recent proposal to amend Nebraska law governing disposition of individuals acquitted of crimes by reason of insanity. The bill proposes to change the kind of evidence relevant to evaluating the dangerousness of an insanity acquittee. Additionally, the bill provides courts with authority to order a variety of treatment programs. This Note examines the provisions of LB 518 in light of issues encompassed by the growing body of scholarship known as therapeutic jurisprudence. First, the Note introduces the background, procedural history, and substantive provisions of LB 518. Second, the Note analyzes the bill's provisions from a …
A Technical Guide To Urban And Community Forestry, World Forestry Center
A Technical Guide To Urban And Community Forestry, World Forestry Center
Nebraska Forest Service: Publications
Trees growing within cities and towns form a forest-an urban forest. But urban trees require special attention, because they are expected to exist within the urban environment. With its infrastructure of streets, sidewalks, curbs, buried utilities, overhead power lines and buildings, the urban environment places tremendous stresses on trees. With proper care, trees become assets which grow in value over time. Without care, tree value declines, eventually becoming a liability to the community. The Technical Guide to Urban Forestry was produced to help communities develop, manage and protect their urban forest resources. The purpose of this publication is to provide …

Preventive Interventions In Early Adolescence: Developmental And Contextual Challenges, Bonnie L. Barber, Lisa J. Crockett
Preventive Interventions In Early Adolescence: Developmental And Contextual Challenges, Bonnie L. Barber, Lisa J. Crockett
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Adolescence today is broadly perceived as a more difficult and dangerous period than in previous decades. Those holding this view point to increases in teenage pregnancy and childbearing, sexually transmitted diseases, alcohol abuse, drug addiction, juvenile arrests, depression, and suicide as indicators of changing conditions. Although uncommon in childhood, these problems increase in early adolescence, and they can lead to greater likelihood of negative developmental trajectories. Because young adolescents are at the age when these issues are surfacing, they are a particularly important target group for interventions designed to prevent or delay the onset of negative behavior patterns (Crockett & …

“Introduction” To Developmental Perspectives On Motivation, Janis Jacobs
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This volume marks the 40th anniversary of the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation, and with it a renewed commitment to the Symposium's original focus on motivation. Although we may reemphasize the topic, it is clear that motivation, as an area of study, has changed dramatically over the past 40 years. Although motivation has remained an important theme, it has had to share the stage with other important topics as the field of psychology has expanded. In addition, the concept of motivation has been applied to many diverse areas, has been defined and measured in a variety of ways, and has been …
Community Adjustment Of Young Adults With Mental Retardation: A Developmental Perspective, Richard F. Ittenbach, Sheryl A. Larson, Amy N. Spiegel, Brian H. Abery, Robert W. Prouty
Community Adjustment Of Young Adults With Mental Retardation: A Developmental Perspective, Richard F. Ittenbach, Sheryl A. Larson, Amy N. Spiegel, Brian H. Abery, Robert W. Prouty
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
The community adjustment of young adults with mental retardation remains a crucial issue for all human service providers. No longer does adjustment imply simply the physical integration of persons with disabilities into community settings. Rather, it refers to the adjustment and integration of the whole person into community life. Whether one describes community adjustment as a process, an outcome, a philosophy, or a multidimensional concept (Bachrach, 1981), community adjustment has become synonymous with the term quality-of-life, a quality that depends in large part on one’s happiness and success in socially sanctioned, age-appropriate tasks.
The Contexts Of Housework And The Paid Labor Force: Women’S Perceptions Of The Demand Levels Of Their Work, Sheryl J. Grana, Helen A. Moore, Janet K. Wilson, Michelle Miller
The Contexts Of Housework And The Paid Labor Force: Women’S Perceptions Of The Demand Levels Of Their Work, Sheryl J. Grana, Helen A. Moore, Janet K. Wilson, Michelle Miller
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This research explores the work perceptions, both physical and mental, of women. The research finds that women’s perceptions of waged and nonwaged labor differ greatly depending on the work environment. Perceptions of physical demands of waged labor are almost solely dependent on the type of paid labor women engage in. For homeworkers, perceptions of physical labor are influenced primarily by the number of hours invested in housework. The mental demands of waged and nonwaged labor are also perceived differently. Women in the waged economy report significantly higher mental demands than do homeworkers. This too varies across labor segments. The closest …
Review Of Harriet Martineau: First Woman Sociologist, By Susan Hoecker-Drysdale, Michael R. Hill
Review Of Harriet Martineau: First Woman Sociologist, By Susan Hoecker-Drysdale, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Harriet Martineau (1802-76) is one of the most important and least appreciated founders of sociology. The author takes a significant and much-needed step in this lucid introductory biography of Harriet Martineau, from the standpoint of a sociologist. Hoecker Drysdale's decidedly sociological perspective distinguishes this volume from several parallel works that critique Martineau from literary, historical, journalistic, and other angles. With this book, the early woman sociologist whose writing influenced the likes of Edith Abbott, Herbert Spencer, William Sumner, and Lester Ward finally receives a book-length appreciation from a member of the one intellectual discipline that ought long ago to have …
Histamine-Immunoreactive Fibers In The Brain Of Rana Pipiens, Wayne Briner, Paul Guth, Charles Norris
Histamine-Immunoreactive Fibers In The Brain Of Rana Pipiens, Wayne Briner, Paul Guth, Charles Norris
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Histamine (HA) is a neurotransmitter that has been found in the brains of several species. We examined the brain of Rana pipiens using a well-characterized antibody to HA conjugated to 1-ethyl-3(3diamethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide (EDCDI) with immunohistochemistry (IHC). Staining was enhanced by pre-treating the animals with histidine, colchicine, and quinacrine. IHC staining was done in the standard fashion using the "ABC" technique. HA-immunoreactive (HA-IR) fibers in the brain of Rana pipiens were distributed in a manner similar to that found in other species. The cerebral hemispheres were lightly labelled in nearly all regions. The …
Evidence For Mate Choice By Male Guppies (Poecilia Reticulata), Joseph J. Benz, Daniel W. Leger
Evidence For Mate Choice By Male Guppies (Poecilia Reticulata), Joseph J. Benz, Daniel W. Leger
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Mate choice by males in organisms that do not make obviously costly contributions to offspring should be expected where sperm production is limited and courtship time is finite. Although male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) contribute only sperm to their offspring, preliminary evidence points to male mate choice in this species. Thus, the hypothesis that male guppies choose their mates was investigated. Mate choice was measured by giving males a choice of different-sized females, using only visual cues. The data revealed that males preferred large females over small females whether they were presented singly, in pairs, or with a small …

An Investigation Of The Exclusion Of Students With Disabilities In National Data Collection Programs, Kevin S. Mcgrew, Martha L. Thurlow, Amy N. Spiegel
An Investigation Of The Exclusion Of Students With Disabilities In National Data Collection Programs, Kevin S. Mcgrew, Martha L. Thurlow, Amy N. Spiegel
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
This investigation examined the extent to which students with disabilities are involved in a select sample of national data collection programs that are playing a pivotal role in the measurement-driven educational reform movement. Nine data collection programs that are receiving significant attention in current educational reform initiatives were reviewed. The results suggest that approxi-mately 40% to 50% of school-age students with disabilities are excluded from some of the most prom-inent national educational data collection programs. In contrast, students with disabilities are included to a greater degree in noneducational data collection programs that do not require partici-pation in direct assessment activities. …

Managing Russian Factory Workers: The Impact Of U.S.-Based Behavioral And Participative Techniques, Dianne H.B. Welsh, Fred Luthans, Steven M. Sommer
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
The new internationalization of the field of management has produced growing concern as to whether theories and techniques largely developed in the United States apply to other cultures. A within-subjects experimental design was used to analyze the impacts that three popular and successful techniques used in U.S. studies had on the performance of workers in the largest textile factory in the Russian republic of the former Soviet Union. Two techniques, providing extrinsic rewards and behavioral management, had significant,

Resource Allocation, Barbara Lacost, Patricia A. O'Connell, Marilyn Grady, Steven Coleman, Donna Gloshen, Barbara Jacobson, Scott Koch, Harlan Metschke, Douglas Radtke, Mary Jo Svatora
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
Resources are available means of supply or support that assist in accomplishing goals and meeting needs. Caldwell and Spinks (1986) define resources as culture and knowledge; however, most experts agree with Guthrie, Garms, and Pierce (1988), who define resources as "time, personnel, and materials ... as well as money" (p. 216). Thomas (1980) suggests that student and parent time is a "nonpurchased resource" that school leaders interested in effective and efficient allocation should consider. Rossmiller (1983) distinguishes between resource inputs and resource applications. Inputs, he says, are the available human and material resources, whereas applications are the "alternative ways resource …

The Department Chair:New Roles, Responsibilities And Challenges, Alan T. Seagren, John W. Creswell, Daniel W. Wheeler
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
This monograph explores the changing role of the academic department chair in the areas of leadership, influence, and faculty development. The paper uses research insights to explore the situation of an academic chair who is squeezed between the demands of upper administration and the expectations of faculty, staff, and students. Studies of the roles and responsibilities of chairs consistently show that the role is ambiguous, unclear in authority, and difficult to classify as faculty or administrator. The tradition of faculty ownership dictates that chair leadership must emphasize empowering activities. The most effective use of political influence and power understands the political …
Effects Of Response Strategy And Retention Interval On Performance Of Clark’S Nutcrackers In A Radial Maze Analogue, Deborah J. Olson, Alan C. Kamil, Russell P. Balda
Effects Of Response Strategy And Retention Interval On Performance Of Clark’S Nutcrackers In A Radial Maze Analogue, Deborah J. Olson, Alan C. Kamil, Russell P. Balda
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Two groups of Clark’s nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana) were trained to use either a stay or shift response strategy in a radial maze analogue. Each trial had a preretention stage, a retention interval, and a postretention test. In Experiment 1, acquisition with a 5-min retention interval was studied. Response strategy did not affect the rate at which the task was learned. Performance following longer retention intervals was tested in Experiments 2-4. Changes in retention intervals were presented in trial blocks of increasing duration in Experiment 2 and were randomly presented between trials in Experiment 3. Experiment 4 extended the …

Plotinus And St. John Of The Cross: Concurrences And Divergencies, Elizabeth Wilhelmsen
Spanish Language and Literature Papers
We propose to examine here two renowned champions of mysticism, Plotinus and St. John of the Cross. The former, the third-century Greek philosopher from Alexandria in northern Egypt, is the father of Neoplatonism. The latter, the sixteenth-century Castilian Carmelite, is known as reformer of his order, as theologian, as mystic, and as sublime poet of divine love. Both figures can be described, above all and specifically, as mystics: that is, as practitioners of mysticism and, at the same time, as theoreticians of mysticism. There is shared by both one dominating concern and objective: personal, experiential union with the transcendent Other, …

Woman As Cat Monster: Sax Rohmer And The Green Eyes Of Bast, Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Monsters fill our nights with nightmares, cause us to shiver in terror and look over our shoulder when we walk down dark streets. In other words, monsters are fun. Famous monsters are often men of despicable shapes and minds: e.g., Count Dracula, Frankenstein, the mummy whose tomb has been violated, the werewolf, and Mr. Hyde. The world of female monsters, like their female human counterparts, is often populated by women who depend upon men for their status. Dracula picks beautiful women to become his bloody mates, and Frankenstein tries to take a "bride." More frequently, however, women are seen as …
