International Human Rights, Morality In War, And The Structure Of Rights, Edward C. O'Dowd, Robert F. Schopp Jan 1993

International Human Rights, Morality In War, And The Structure Of Rights, Edward C. O'Dowd, Robert F. Schopp

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

A careful analysis of certain issues of morality in war demonstrates important differences in the duties recognized by Western and Chinese military) officers toward their soldiers. These differences reflect fundamentally different theories of social morality in the societies these officers represent. Although Western countries and China have endorsed a common set of internationally recognized human rights, a meaningful consensus regarding human rights must remain consistent across three levels of analysis. The putative contemporary) consensus among Chinese and liberal societies fails because the fundamental differences in underlying principles of social morality that give rise to divergent principles of morality in war …

3. Enhancing Instructional Programming And Student Achievement With Curriculum-Based Measurement, Lynn S. Fuchs Jan 1993

3. Enhancing Instructional Programming And Student Achievement With Curriculum-Based Measurement, Lynn S. Fuchs

Curriculum-Based Measurement

Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) is a form of curriculum-based assessment. As such, CBM has three features in common with all curriculum-based assessment approaches (Tucker, 1987): Test stimuli are drawn from the student's curriculum; assessment is ongoing and repeated across time; and assessment data are used to formulate instructional decisions.

Despite these similarities to other forms of curriculum-based assessment, CBM is distinctive because of two important features: It measures student proficiency across the annual curriculum and relics on standardized, prescriptive measurement methods (Fuchs & Dena, in press). The first purpose of this chapter is to explain these two features of CBM, by …

6. Cba: An Assessment Of Its Current Status And Prognosis For Its Future, Mark R. Shinn, Roland H. Good Iii

Curriculum-Based Measurement

The very fact that curriculum-based assessment (CBA) forms the basis of a topic-driven conference at the center of American educational and psychological measurement (i.e., the Buros Institute) is testimony that the strategies are receiving a substantial amount of professional attention. Although debate continues regarding to whom and when the term curriculum-based assessment should be ascribed (Coulter, 1988), without question, its prominence has grown considerably in the last 10 years. Within the last 5 years, school psychology and special education have seen their flagship journals, School Psychology Review and Exceptional Children, devote special volumes to CBA. National organizations such as …

2. A Review Of Curriculum-Based Procedures On Nine Assessment Components, Gerald Tindal

Curriculum-Based Measurement

The purpose of this chapter is to describe curriculum-based procedures from a broad perspective that encompasses the major models appearing in the professional literature in the past 10 years. Rather than simply review the major perspectives, operating assumptions, and implementation directives of these models, however, nine criteria are presented for a uniform comparison. These criteria were implicit in the adoption of curriculum-based measurement (CBM) in Pine County, Minnesota during the initial training and field-based research conducted in the early 1980s. Therefore, they can be used both to structure the review and to provide district personnel a focused evaluation strategy for …

5. Curriculum-Based Assessment: Implications For Psychoeducational Practice, Edward S. Shapiro

Curriculum-Based Measurement

The topic of this chapter places me somewhere between Camac the Magnificent and a crystal ball gazer! On the one hand, I am being asked to look into the future and discuss the potential implications of curriculum-based assessment (CBA) for psychoeducational practice. Although my graduate students believe I may have superhuman powers and can be all places at the same time, fortune telling was never one of my talents. On the other hand, like Camac, I obviously believe that CBA is an answer, but I'm not sure what the questions are going to be. In this paper I assume that …

Curriculum-Based Measurement- Complete Work, Jane Close Conoley, Jack J. Kramer

Curriculum-Based Measurement

This volume in the Buros-Nebraska Series on Measurement and Testing provides current information on the development and implementation of curriculum-based measurement. As the title of the volume suggests, effective measurement of children's classroom achievement is not a new problem. Curriculum-based measurement provides an interesting and useful alternative to traditional strategies for assessing academic performance. This volume continues the tradition of including papers given at the annual Buros-Nebraska Symposium on Testing and Measurement as well as additional contributions selected especially for this book. Each of our authors has made significant contributions to the research that has been produced in the area …

Schoolwide Social Skills Training: Providing Preventive Services To Students At-Risk, Robert N. Jones, Susan M. Sheridan, Wayne R. Binns

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

This paper reports a schoolwide social skills assessment and training model including a two-gate student identification procedure (i.e., in-class social skills training for all students and small group intensive training for at-risk target students). The model is directed at reducing future serious problems by addressing identified difficulties early (i.e., through secondary prevention procedures). Specific model objectives are to (a) utilize a comprehensive, multigate procedure to identify students at risk; (b) implement schoolwide training procedures to teach a number of important prosocial skills identified by teachers; (c) treat a subgroup of target subjects considered at highest risk for developing pervasive social …

Behavioral Sex Differences In Children Of Diverse Cultures: The Case Of Nurturance To Infants, Carolyn P. Edwards Jan 1993

Behavioral Sex Differences In Children Of Diverse Cultures: The Case Of Nurturance To Infants, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This chapter draws on the data from the Children of Different Worlds study (Whiting & Edwards, 1988) to consider the origin of sex differences in children’s behavior worldwide, in particular: (1) how different kinds of social behavior are elicited by different contexts of socialization (defined by the sex, age, status, and kinship of social interactants, ongoing activities, and other potent dimensions of setting); (2) how these contexts of socialization are distributed across cultures and associated with various adult subsistence strategies, family structures, household patterns, and forms of social networks; and (3) how boys and girls of each age in diverse …

Against Relativism: Restoring Truth In Writing, Barbara Couture Jan 1993

Against Relativism: Restoring Truth In Writing, Barbara Couture

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Jasper Neel and Barbara Herrnstein Smith do not find truth in writing because they do not regard truth as integral with human experience. As I have proposed, three rational assumptions deny the relationship. Ideological historicism rejects the malleability of the future and denies the possibility of human agency that both embraces and overcomes the past. Hence, truth which has not yet been found is seen as unattainable in human experience and, thus, in writing. Essentialist objectivity makes of truth an exchangeable, displaceable, replaceable object; it encourages the belief that observable and discrete differences in individuals' values deny the possibility of …

“Sound” Alternatives To Visual Graphics For Exploratory Data Analysis, John H. Flowers, Terry A. Hauer

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Efficient exploratory data analysis (EDA) maybe aided by succinct, but informative, graphical representations (e.g., Tukey plots) that convey information about central tendency, variability, and shape of distributions, and that permit detection of outliers. Using research strategies adapted from studies of cross-modal perceptual equivalence, we show how auditory analogies of such displays may offer an effective alternative to visual plots for EDA.

4. Academic Skill Assessment: An Evaluation Of The Role And Function Of Curriculum-Based Measurements, Francis E. Lentz, Jack J. Kramer

Curriculum-Based Measurement

In the most meaningful use of the term assessment, important decisions are made daily by teachers based on their assessment of information obtained from student responses to curriculum-related materials. These assessment decisions may include deciding on extra work or deciding to refer a child for learning or behavior problems. The term curriculum-based assessment (CBA) has been used to encompass a wide range of procedures ranging from these daily informal analyses by teachers, to highly structured measurement systems used in special education systems. Although well-constructed guides exist for some sets of curriculum-based decisions (e.g., Shinn, 1989), there is inadequate empirical research …

8. Thoughts On The Relationship Between Measurement Knowledge And Teacher Effectiveness, Jack J. Kramer

Teacher Training in Measurement and Assessment Skills

I began thinking about the relationship between measurement knowledge and teacher effectiveness a few years ago when our Teachers College was considering curriculum changes in our undergraduate teacher education program. Many questions about the amount and type of measurement knowledge to be included in our teacher preparation programs were raised and discussed. The recent Buros-Nebraska Symposium on Measurement and Testing related to this topic and the chapters included in this volume have resulted in further consideration of this issue. My review and analysis of this information indicates that there are many unanswered questions about the relative importance of measurement knowledge …

G93-1129 Cockroaches And Their Control, Shripat T. Kamble, David L. Keith

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide provides information on common cockroaches found in Nebraska, and management strategies, including prevention, sanitation, trapping and use of insecticides.

At the height of its popularity many years ago, millions of Americans could hum or sing the song, "La Cucaracha".... The Cockroach. But singing is usually the farthest thing from one's mind when these hardy pests become invaders.

Cockroaches are the most important insect pests in Nebraska households and public places. These insects are oval, flat-bodied, dark colored, with chewing mouth parts, three pairs of legs and usually two pairs of wings. All roaches have three stages in their …

5. Teachers' Assessment Of Students: Roles, Responsibilities And Purpose Believing Is Seeing, Donna Campbell

Teacher Training in Measurement and Assessment Skills

Public education, and its assessment practices, have evolved from beliefs about how the world operates that are equivalent to the flat-earth theory. As long as the assessment of students is designed to fit obsolete "truths" about knowledge, learning, the mind, and human organizations, the roles and responsibilities of teachers in conducting such assessments, their purposes for doing so, and their preparation for fulfilling them will be likewise obsolete.

The following self-assessment (Figure 1) meets only one of fellow presenter H. D. Hoover's criteria for tests. It has not been checked for validity, reliability, objectivity, or fairness. It is, however, feasible. …

7. Measurement Training In Nebraska Teacher Education Programs, Steven L. Wise, Leslie E. Lukin

Teacher Training in Measurement and Assessment Skills

One of the most common activities in which teachers engage is assessment of students. Stiggins and Conklin (1988) estimated that teachers spend as much as a third of their professional time in assessment-related activities. Although teachers need a variety of observational and problem-solving skills for effective classroom assessment (see chapter 2 by Richard Stiggins in this volume), a substantial portion of classroom assessment activities draws upon teachers' skills in testing and measurement. If they do not have a firm understanding of basic principles of measurement, teachers are more likely to engage in unsatisfactory assessment practices. Hence, a necessary (though by …

Department of Statistics: Reports and Administrative Materials

The CSRS review team applauds the statistical expertise of the Biometry Department which began as the statistical Laboratory in 1957 and culminated with the current academic Department of Biometry. This enhancement has been highlighted by a significant increase in the number of faculty and staff, the initiation of a Master of Science program, and the provision of graduate assistant stipends. With the presence of seven faculty, the imminent increase from seven to fifteen graduate students, the establishment of statistical consulting with numerous IANR faculty, and the diverse research and teaching expertise of the faculty, the department is poised to provide …

Susan Laflesche Picotte.Md.: Nineteenth-Century Physician And Reformer, Valerie Sherer Mathes

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

She was laid to rest beside her husband on a fall Sunday in a small Nebraska town. Three clergymen performed the simple service, the pastor of the Walthill Presbyterian Church, the pastor of the Blackbird Hills Mission, and a member of the Presbyterian Home Missions Board. The closing prayer was given by an Omaha tribal elder. That afternoon a moving graveside service was performed by members of the Amethyst Chapter of the Eastern Star. This diverse assemblage, paying their last respects on 19 September 1915 at the family home and at the Bancroft Cemetery, represented only one facet of the …
