Structuring Constraints On Perceptions Of Upward Influence And Supervisory Relationships, Kathleen J. Krone
Structuring Constraints On Perceptions Of Upward Influence And Supervisory Relationships, Kathleen J. Krone
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This research examined the effects of centralization of authority on employees’ perceptions of the likelihood of attempting upward influence and their perceptions of supervisory trust and leader-member exchange. Three hundred and sixty-two employees from five different organizations responded to a questionnaire that assessed perceptions of centralization, attitudes toward upward influence, leader-member exchange, and supervisory trust. Consistent with earlier formulations, centralization was operationalized as perceptions of participation in decision making and job autonomy (Hage, 1980; Hage & Aiken, 1967). Results revealed that both job autonomy and participation in decision making significantly affect subordinates’ attitudes toward attempting upward influence and the levels …
Homework: A Natural Means Of Home-School Collaboration, Daniel E. Olympia, Susan M. Sheridan, William Jenson
Homework: A Natural Means Of Home-School Collaboration, Daniel E. Olympia, Susan M. Sheridan, William Jenson
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this article is to place homework in the framework of an emerging interest in the development of effective home-school partnerships. Specifically, review of the homework literature is provided with attention to parent-, teacher-, and child-mediated programs. Several homework programs that have received empirical support are described. Finally, the role of the school psychologist in supporting and coordinating complementary home-school homework programs is explored.

School Teacher's Role In A School-Community Alcohol Intervention Program, Ian Newman, Mary Lee Fitzsimmons, Kim M. Maschmann, J. W. Upright
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Because the majority of rural and/or frontier children attend school for at least some time in their lives, implementing a low-cost, school-based alcohol and other drug prevention and intervention program is an effective way to reach a majority of children with alcohol and other drug abuse prevention, education, and early intervention services. This paper describes a model program, the School-Community Intervention Program (SCIP), and describes the results of a 2-year evaluation of 35 schools.
Community Adjustment Of Young Adults With Mental Retardation: Overcoming Barriers To Inclusion, Richard F. Ittenbach, Brian H. Abery, Sheryl A. Larson, Amy N. Spiegel, Robert W. Prouty
Community Adjustment Of Young Adults With Mental Retardation: Overcoming Barriers To Inclusion, Richard F. Ittenbach, Brian H. Abery, Sheryl A. Larson, Amy N. Spiegel, Robert W. Prouty
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Movement of persons with mental retardation out of institutions and into community settings is occurring at an ever-increasing pace (Amado, Lakin, & Menke, 1990). State and federal laws have legitimized the basic rights of persons with mental retardation to live, work, and participate in typical community settings. Yet, physical integration is not synonymous with full community inclusion. Numerous barriers remain that serve as obstacles to successful assimilation into community life. For instance, successful social integration depends on attitudinal changes of persons without mental retardation—families, friends, service-delivery professionals, and the general public—toward persons with mental retardation. The way young adults with …
Job Complexity, "Type A" Behavior, And Cardiovascular Disorder: A Prospective Study, John Schaubroeck, Daniel C. Ganster, Barbara Ellen Kemmerer
Job Complexity, "Type A" Behavior, And Cardiovascular Disorder: A Prospective Study, John Schaubroeck, Daniel C. Ganster, Barbara Ellen Kemmerer
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Interview-based measures of "type A" behavior and psychological and task-person indexes of job complexity were obtained from 251 police and fire department employees with sound cardiovascular health. Fol- low-up data on cardiovascular disorder were collected seven years later from participants who had remained with their organizations. The type A behavior pattern predicted cardiovascular disorder over time, and the relationships between the two complexity indexes and cardio- vascular morbidity were positive among individuals with high type A behavior ratings but negative among those with low ratings. We discuss the implications of these findings for worker health and job design.
Performance Of Four Seed-Caching Corvid Species In The Radial-Arm Maze Analog, Alan Kamil, Russell P. Balda, Deborah J. Olson
Performance Of Four Seed-Caching Corvid Species In The Radial-Arm Maze Analog, Alan Kamil, Russell P. Balda, Deborah J. Olson
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Four seed-caching corvid species were tested in an open-room analog of the radial-arm maze. During Experiment 1, the species more dependent on stored food, Clark’s nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana) and pinyon jays (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus), acquired the task more quickly and to higher accuracy levels than either scrub jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens) or Mexican jays (A. ultramarina). During Experiment 2, performance after retention intervals was tested. When intervals of 30-210 min were tested in ascending order, species differences observed during acquisition were again obtained. However, when intervals of 5-300 min were tested in random order, …
Mind And Measurement: Review Of Daniel Algom (Ed.), Psychophysical Approaches To Cognition, John H. Flowers
Mind And Measurement: Review Of Daniel Algom (Ed.), Psychophysical Approaches To Cognition, John H. Flowers
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
I believe this volume will stimulate new research ideas, provide readers with some unique historical and philosophical perspectives, and raise important basic theoretical issues about both measurement and cognitive structure. Additionally, several of the chapters provide useful topical reviews (e.g., Baird and Hubbard on imagery, Algom on memory psychophysics, and Rollman on pain). The volume makes a compelling case that cognitive effects are an important component of psychophysical judgment even within the sensory realm and that psychophysical techniques can and should be used to tell us more about aspects of cognition. Whether the latter message will be heard by those …
Rejex-It'" Ag-36 The Gentle Way To Repel Geese From Golf Courses And Other Turf Areas, Peter F. Vogt
Rejex-It'" Ag-36 The Gentle Way To Repel Geese From Golf Courses And Other Turf Areas, Peter F. Vogt
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Birds have always been a problem in agriculture, specially for berries and fruits. Farmers and home owners have been fighting these problems with limited success for centuries. However, the problems with birds on turf are relatively new and are not even known by many people. The "Complete Guide to Pest Control" (Ware 1988) does not even mention geese as a pest, or golf courses as an area of bird problems.

The Evolutionary Relationships Of The Skunks To Each Other And The Rest Of The Weasels; With A Note On Behavioral Idiosyncrasies, Jerry W. Dragoo
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
I will discuss four aspects of my current research with respect to skunks. The first concerns the recognition and conservation of potentially endangered populations of hog-nosed skunks. The second pertains to the evolutionary relationships among the three genera of skunks, based on genetic data. The third aspect also is based on molecular data, and is a study of the relationship of the skunks to the rest of the Mustelidae (weasels). Finally, I will discuss some of the behavioral idiosyncrasies I have observed in my endeavors to obtain skunk specimens.

Similarities Between Big Game Repellent And Predator Urine Repellency To White-Tailed Deer: The Importance Of Sulfur And Fatty Acids, Rebecca Lewison, N. Jay Bean, Evgeny V. Aronov, John E. Mcconnell Jr., J. Russell Mason
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 6th (1993)
In the present experiment, we evaluated the repellency of Big Game Repellent® (BGR), whole coyote urine, coyote urine with sulfur compounds removed, and water. Each stimulus was applied to an ornamental plant (hostas, Alba marginata) at 5 sites in the vicinity of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. At weekly intervals for 5 weeks, damage was recorded, treatments were reapplied, and plants were replaced when necessary. There was no damage to plants treated with either BGR or whole coyote urine. This was not true for plants sprayed with sulfur-free urine or water. We conclude that the repellency of coyote urine is largely a consequence …
Spatial Form And Character Revelations: Korolenko's Siberian Stories, Radha Balasubramanian
Spatial Form And Character Revelations: Korolenko's Siberian Stories, Radha Balasubramanian
Russian Language and Literature Papers
Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko's (1853-1921) short stories unravel spatially rather than temporally--that is, juxtaposition of episodes in a moment of time takes precedence over sequential presentation. Past and present are often "fused in one comprehensive view," giving them a spatial form. Korolenko's narrator, proceeding along a road, unexpectedly meets interesting individuals and soon witnesses their actions and/or shares with them events from their past that have shaped their present world view through a recollection. It is as though the very volatility of the protagonists' present situation helps disclose a moment of decision from their past. This distinct present is portrayed through …

Street youth are at risk of HIV infection worldwide. To develop effective prevention strategies, information about the meanings and functions of sexual activity for street youth is needed. In this paper, data from structured questionnaires, focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and field observations are used to build up a picture of the sexual culture of 9-to-18-year-olds living and/or working on the streets of a large Brazilian city. The findings reveal that these children and adolescents engage in sexual behavior that puts them at risk of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS, and reinforce that sex is a multi-determined and entrenched behavior …
Pregnancy Prevention In Early Adolescence: A Developmental Perspective, Lisa J. Crockett, Joanne S. Chopak
Pregnancy Prevention In Early Adolescence: A Developmental Perspective, Lisa J. Crockett, Joanne S. Chopak
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Although there is widespread interest in preventing teenage pregnancy, few interventions have been directed toward young adolescents. In part this neglect is understandable because adolescents under age 15 account for only a small percentage of teenage pregnancies (Pittman & Adams, 1988). At the same time, the lack of attention to younger adolescents is unfortunate on several counts. First, an increasing number of young adolescents are at risk. Rates of sexual activity have been rising in this group (Hofferth, Kahn, & Baldwin, 1987) and, because young adolescents are typically not consistent or effective contraceptive users, an increasing number of girls are …
Father’S Presence And Young Children’S Behavioral And Cognitive Adjustment, Lisa J. Crockett, David J. Eggebeen, Alan J. Hawkins
Father’S Presence And Young Children’S Behavioral And Cognitive Adjustment, Lisa J. Crockett, David J. Eggebeen, Alan J. Hawkins
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The impact of fathers on the development and well-being of their children has been the focus of much recent research and debate (e.g., Furstenberg, 1988; Hawkins & Eggebeen, 1991; Lamb, 1987). Traditionally, fathers have been assumed to play an important role in the socialization of their children and, consequently, father-absence has been hypothesized to result in a variety of cognitive and psychosocial vulnerabilities. The need to understand the influence of fathers becomes especially acute at a time when high rates of divorce and nonmarital childbearing lead to the prediction that the majority of children will experience some period of father-absence …

Review Of Never Too Thin, By Eva Szekely, And Anorexia And Bulimia: Anatomy Of A Social Epidemic, By Richard Gordon, Julia Mcquillan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The two books reviewed seek more than a medical or a psychological understanding of the recent increase in eating disorders. Clinical psychologist Richard Gordon (1990) titles his work Anorexia and Bulimia: The Anatomy of a Social Epidemic and uses anthropologist George Devereux’s eating disorder concept as his primary analytic tool. In Never Too Thin, Eva Szekely, also a clinical psychologist, conveys a different understanding of the concept of social, which does not separate it from the concept of individual. She understands the individual and social as coconstituting each other through social relations embedded in individuals’ bodies and shaped by …

Early Adolescent Family Formation, Lisa J. Crockett
Early Adolescent Family Formation, Lisa J. Crockett
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
In the United States, adolescent family formation has been considered a major social problem since the late 1970s. The sources of concern are multiple. First, teenage childbearing is associated with risks for the mother and her child, including health problems, reduced life chances, and a greater likelihood of living in poverty. Second, a large and increasing proportion of births to teenagers are nonmarital; this appears to compound these risks. Third, the rate of teenage childbearing in the United States far exceeds those in other Western, industrialized countries (Alan Guttmacher Institute, 1986). The high rate of adolescent pregnancy in the United …
Functional Outcome Analysis: Do The Costs Outweigh The Benefits?, Susan M. Sheridan
Functional Outcome Analysis: Do The Costs Outweigh The Benefits?, Susan M. Sheridan
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Noell and Gresham (this issue) provide a thoughtful and insightful description of Functional Outcome Analysis (FOA) as an important construct for the evaluation of consultation and prereferral interventions. Their “framework for investigating relationships between interventions, behavior change, costs, benefits, treatment integrity, treatment acceptability, and ecological validity” (p. 38) is novel, and there is a definite need for expanding our considerations of outcome in consultation research and practice. There is obvious scientific and empirical appeal to the conceptual model of FOA. In particular, it has the potential to move consultation research in a new and exciting direction. However, practically speaking, one …
Relations Between Social Skills And High-Risk Sexual Interactions Among Adolescents, Douglas W. Nangle, David J. Hansen
Relations Between Social Skills And High-Risk Sexual Interactions Among Adolescents, Douglas W. Nangle, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Researchers have begun to employ social-skills training in efforts to change the sexual behavior of adolescents. However, despite the promise of social-skills training, little is known about how social skills are related to the sexual practices of adolescents. The present article reviews the current literature and proposes a conceptual framework for understanding the relations between social skills and sexual behavior of adolescents by (a)examining the relationship between sexual activity and social skills, (b) examining the development of sexual-interaction skills and deficits, (c) summarizing what is currently known about the relations between social skills and sexual behavior, (d) discussing current issues …

A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Relationship Between Educational Investment And Adolescent Sexual Activity, Christine Mccauley Ohannessian, Lisa J. Crockett
A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Relationship Between Educational Investment And Adolescent Sexual Activity, Christine Mccauley Ohannessian, Lisa J. Crockett
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The relation between educational investment and sexual behavior was examined longitudinally in a sample of 479 rural adolescents. Surveys were administered to the subjects twice—once when they were in the 8th, 9th, and 10th grades, and again 2 years later when they were in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Results indicated that among girls, educational investment predicted sexual activity, with academic grades in school significantly predicting reported frequency of sexual activity 2 years later. In contrast for boys, sexual involvement predicted later educational investment, particularly involvement in academic activities. These findings suggest different developmental patterns for boys and girls. …
Extending Continuous Versus Discontinuous Conditioned Stimuli Before Versus After Unconditioned Stimuli, Melody Albert, Sean Ricker, Rick A. Bevins, John J.B. Ayres
Extending Continuous Versus Discontinuous Conditioned Stimuli Before Versus After Unconditioned Stimuli, Melody Albert, Sean Ricker, Rick A. Bevins, John J.B. Ayres
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Conditioned suppression was used with rats to study the effects of extending conditioned stimuli (CSs) before versus after the delivery of unconditioned stimuli. These extensions are termed B and A extensions, respectively. Within-group designs were used to compare the effects of extending CSs when 2-min parts of those CSs were separated by temporal gaps of 6 min versus a separation of no gap. The results were as follows: (a) B extensions weakened conditioning more than did A extensions, with or without gaps; (b) under some conditions, this asymmetrical effect persisted with extended training; (c) gaps between 2-min parts of a …
Order Matters, And Thus So Does Timing: Graphical Clocks And Process Synchronicity, F. Gregory Hayden
Order Matters, And Thus So Does Timing: Graphical Clocks And Process Synchronicity, F. Gregory Hayden
College of Business: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is, first, to review definitions of time; second, to discuss particular dimensions of time; and third, to relate those dimensions to graphical clocks. The value of such clocks for network analysis will be discussed.' The clocks for the integration of system networks will be computerized matrices and concomitant digraphs (graphical clocks). Such networks can be used to provide a standardized system clock to determine timeliness. This places events into a common system, which is timed by sequenced events. The coordination of broadly recurring sets of meaningful events characterizes synchronicity. Thus, timeliness is defined by system …
Review Of Organizing The Lakota: The Political Economy Of The New Deal On The Pine Ridge And Rosebud Reservations By Thomas Biolsi, David E. Wilkins (Lumbee)
Review Of Organizing The Lakota: The Political Economy Of The New Deal On The Pine Ridge And Rosebud Reservations By Thomas Biolsi, David E. Wilkins (Lumbee)
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This book is an important contribution to the growing literature base which seeks to illuminate critical federal Indian laws and policies by incorporating the historical dimension, utilizing economic data, and analyzing political events. Biolsi strives to accomplish this by employing a political-economic paradigm: an historical approach which emphasizes the relationships between the society, polity, and the economy.
In Whose Backyard?: Concern About Sitting A Nuclear Waste Facility, Robert D. Benford, Helen A. Moore, J. Allen Williams Jr.
In Whose Backyard?: Concern About Sitting A Nuclear Waste Facility, Robert D. Benford, Helen A. Moore, J. Allen Williams Jr.
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Proponents of hazardous and nuclear waste depositories label opponents to local siting of such facilities "NIMBYs" (Not In My Backyard). This study assesses the extent to which the NIMBY label and the strategies of industry proponents to reduce opposition function on a reasonable set of assumptions. Using survey data and multiple regression techniques, the levels of concern of residents living in the county selected as the site of a low level radioactive wane disposal facility (imminent threat condition) are compared with a statewide sample (hypothetical threat condition). Consistent with proponents' theoretical assumptions, the levels of concern are greater for respondents …
Long-Term Consequences Of Childhood Physical Abuse, Robin Malinosky-Rummell, David J. Hansen
Long-Term Consequences Of Childhood Physical Abuse, Robin Malinosky-Rummell, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This article reviews the literature on the long-term consequences of childhood physical abuse. Empirical research is discussed within 7 topic areas: aggressive and violent behavior, nonviolent criminal behavior, substance abuse, self-injurious and suicidal behavior, emotional problems, interpersonal problems, and academic and vocational difficulties. The studies reviewed involve primarily adult populations, although pertinent findings from literature on children and adolescents are briefly summarized. Some variables that affect the relation between physical abuse and long-term consequences are examined. These moderator variables include maltreatment characteristics, individual factors, family factors, and environmental factors. The article ends with suggestions for future research on long-term consequences …

The fully competent, culpable, and malevolent Spike azttacks Mother Beneficence with a tire iron in order to steal the alms she has collected for the poor. Mother Beneficence defends herself by kicking Spike in the shins, and Dudley Doright rushes to her rescue, punching Spike in the nose, knocking him to the ground, and holding him until the police arrive. Dudley acts solely for the purposes of preventing harm to Mother Beneficence and bringing Spike to justice.
Both Mother Beneficence and Dudley fulfill the offense elements for assault in that they purposely cause bodily injury to another human being. Most …
