Plains And Prairie Space, History, And The Literary Imagination, In Australia And The United States, Don D. Walker
Plains And Prairie Space, History, And The Literary Imagination, In Australia And The United States, Don D. Walker
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In 1825 a space observer orbiting the earth could have looked down on two enormous land masses separated by more than 7000 miles. In the southern hemisphere the great body of land was Australia, an insular continent surrounded by the southern seas. In the northern hemisphere the great body of land was the United States, framed on east and west by oceans, bordered on the north by the even greater land of Canada and on the south by the lesser land of Mexico. Australia and the United States were roughly the same size, some three million square miles.

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Robert Kroetsch, whose approaches to novel writing extend from the primarily realist novel But We Are Exiles (1965) to the clearly post-modernist What the Crow Said (1978) and the somewhat less postmodern Alibi (1983), has left equally wide..ranging impressions on the English--Canadian critical landscape. Responses extend from those who see, at least in his earlier novels, a sympathy for realist and modernist impulses towards synthesis (Turner, Schaefer) to those who have identified Kroetsch as a preeminent postmodern writer (Hutcheon, Neuman); indeed, Linda Hut.. cheon has called him "Mr. Canadian Post.. modern."2 Even within the two parts of Hutcheon's formulation, however, …

Review Of Harry Kirke Wolfe: Pioneer In Psychology, Kevin B. Miller
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Harry Kirke Wolfe: Pioneer in Psychology, by Ludy T. Benjamin, Jr., presents a cogent portrait of an individual whose work and personality helped shape his community. As such, this biography resurrects Wolfe's life and contributions from their obscure condition, brief footnotes in a few psychology texts. Benjamin's work is a vital biography which will appeal to a diverse audience far beyond the scope its title suggests.
"A Gof-Forsaken Place": Folk Eschatology And The Dust Bowl, Brad Lookingbill
"A Gof-Forsaken Place": Folk Eschatology And The Dust Bowl, Brad Lookingbill
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
On an idyllic Sunday in April 1935, people from Lubbock, Texas, to Topeka, Kansas, went on picnics, planted gardens, visited neighbors, and attended church. Communities had been punished with depression and drought, yet on that spring day Plains men and women felt assured that peace and safety had returned. Suddenly in midafternoon the air turned cold, and people noticed then that the sky had become filled with birds, fleeing from some unseen force. Fifteen-year-old Ida Mae Norman, driving home from a Palm Sunday church service with her family, saw a thin strip of black on the horizon north of Guymon, …

Review Of Without Reserve: Stories From Urban Natives, Patricia A. Mccormack
Review Of Without Reserve: Stories From Urban Natives, Patricia A. Mccormack
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Without Reserve is a set of profiles of nine Native people living in Edmonton, Alberta. Each person's story is told in a separate chapter, with brief anecdotes compiled in two additional chapters. Author Lynda Shorten was formerly a reporter with the Edmonton Journal, where she co-authored a series about urban Natives, the genesis of this broader work. Without Reserve is not an academic book, falling, as it does, into a genre of journalistic narratives about Native peoples, for which a significant public market exists, yet it will also attract a social science audience and will probably be assigned to …

Putting Empowerment To Work In The Classroom, Trudy Knowles, Cheryl Medearis, Anne Snell
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
At Sinte Gleska University, a tribal college on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, we are empowering students through our teaching methods and curricular choices. Three areas have been identified as important ingredients in empowering students: validating culture, teaching to learning styles, and utilizing teaching strategies resulting in self-directed learning.
These three elements of empowerment can open up avenues of knowledge that have been previously closed to students on the Rosebud Reservation. As students discover that knowledge is powerful, they begin to learn because they want to.
Change in the fundamental ways we view ourselves as teachers is necessary in order to …

Deepening And Broadening The Dialogue About Teaching, James R. Davis
Deepening And Broadening The Dialogue About Teaching, James R. Davis
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Although there has been a resurgence of interest in college teaching in recent years, it is important to deepen and broaden that interest. The dialogue can be deepened by reflecting more on learning, particularly the fundamental learning paradigms which provide the basis for alternative teaching strategies: training and coaching, lecturing and explaining, inquiry and discovery, and groups and teams. The dialogue can be broadened by reconnecting the discussion to major issues in curriculum planning and assessment.
Faculty Perceptions Of Undergraduate Teaching, Deborah Olsen, Ada B. Simmons
Faculty Perceptions Of Undergraduate Teaching, Deborah Olsen, Ada B. Simmons
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
The purpose of this study was to construct an accurate depiction of the undergraduate teaching portion of the faculty role at a large, public research university, drawing from interviews conducted with 114 faculty. The interview schedule investigated teaching load, course goals, perceptions of undergraduate students, modes of evaluating student learning, office hours and advising, professional role interests and time allocation, feedback about teaching performance, strategies for improving teaching, and satisfaction with teaching. The findings of the current study reveal that faculty are highly committed to undergraduate teaching and are profoundly concerned with students' intellectual development. Results also suggest how complex …
College Students' Perceptions Of Unfairness In The Classroom, Rita Cobb Rodabaugh
College Students' Perceptions Of Unfairness In The Classroom, Rita Cobb Rodabaugh
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
The importance of creating an atmosphere of fairness in the college classroom is discussed. Using psychological equity theory concepts of interactional and procedural fairness as the basis of study, a survey was conducted with 300 university students who were asked to rate the seriousness of 18 faculty misbehaviors. Misbehaviors related to interactional fairness (showing partiality to some students, using profanity and being angry or mean, embarrassing students in class) and misbehaviors related to procedural fairness (unfair in grading; changing policies during the semester; using unfair tests, trick questions) were considered by students to be much more serious than giving excessive …

A Proposal To Amend Section 2032a To Reduce Restrictions On Cash Leasing Of Farm Property, Ryan D. Downs
A Proposal To Amend Section 2032a To Reduce Restrictions On Cash Leasing Of Farm Property, Ryan D. Downs
Nebraska Law Review
In the United States, one of the primary goals of agricultural policy has long been, and continues to be, saving the "family farm." Section 2032A of the Internal Revenue Code, which reduces the estate tax burden for agricultural land owners, is one example of this type of agricultural policy. However, restrictions that section 2032A places on cash leasing of farmland lead to outcomes inconsistent with that goal. This article describes these inconsistencies and proposes amendments to the statute that would align the effects of the statute with Congress's stated goal of saving the family farm. First, the article presents a …
Erisa Plan Fiduciaries Beware: The Abuse Of Discretion Standard Of Review Is No Longer A Guarantee Of Judicial Deference—Salley V. E. I. Dupont De Nemours & Co., 966 F.2d 1011 (5th Cir. 1992), Jon C. Bruning
Nebraska Law Review
This Note critically analyzes the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal's reasons for decreasing the level of deference used to review the decisions of benefit plan fiduciaries. The evolution of the deferential "arbitrary and capricious" or "abuse of discretion" standard of review will be traced from its inception through its less deferential definition in Salley v. E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. This Note first concludes that the current, deferential interpretation of the abuse of discretion standard of review is seriously flawed. Second, this Note contends that despite the increased time and cost constraints that could accompany de facto …

Disenrollment Patterns Of Elderly In Managed Care And Fee For Service, Kenneth G. Manton, Dennis H. Tolley, Robert Newcomer, James C. Vertrees, Charlene Harrington
Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)
As the trend to provide health care through managed care facilities increases, the need to examine ,vhy insured individuals voluntarily terminate managed care coverage grows. Voluntary termination of coverage, or dis enrollment, has both social and fiscal implications. Particularly among the elderly, patterns of disenrollment likely are related to self assessment of care needs and levels of health. In this paper we examine the patterns of dis enrollment among elderly enrollees as a function of health status and disability. We focus on disenrollment patterns from an experimental prepaid extended care facility, called a social HMO (S/HMO) and compare this pattern …
G94-1227 Preparation For Retirement: Planning When Still Employed, George P. Rowe
G94-1227 Preparation For Retirement: Planning When Still Employed, George P. Rowe
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Retirement preparation includes planning for financial security, health maintenance, a social network, and meaningful activities.
Retirement is defined as partial or complete withdrawal from career work accompanied by a change in the sources and amount of income. Most persons choose to retire today between the ages of 62 and 66 since eligibility for partial Social Security benefits begins at age 62 with full benefits available by age 65. Full benefits will begin later for Americans born after 1959 when they reach age 67 in 2027. For most occupations, there is no mandatory age at which people have to quit working. …
Collaboration, Critical Pedagogy, And Struggles Over Difference, Amy M. Goodburn, Beth Ina
Collaboration, Critical Pedagogy, And Struggles Over Difference, Amy M. Goodburn, Beth Ina
Department of English: Faculty Publications
If teachers desire their students to view their own texts as part of an ongoing conversation about difference, then they need to reflect upon and question their own assumptions about collaboration. Teachers need to recognize that, for some students, the value of collaboration is viewed primarily in terms of social interaction and not in the production of text. When evaluating students' collaborative texts, teachers are often not aware of the many negotiations and interactions that may have contributed to the text's formation but are not necessarily inscribed in it. Journals and collaborative evaluations of texts are one means of recovering …
Deer, Scott R. Craven, Scott E. Hygnstrom
Deer, Scott R. Craven, Scott E. Hygnstrom
Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage Handbook
Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are probably the most widely distributed and best-recognized large mammals in North America. Deer are even-toed ungulates of the family Cervidae. The white-tailed deer is found in every state in the United States except perhaps Alaska and Utah. Deer are creatures of the forest edge rather than the dense, old-growth forest. Browse (leaves, stems, and buds of woody plants) is generally available all year and is a staple food for deer. Breeding occurs from October to January depending on latitude. Deer damage a wide variety of row crops, forage crops, vegetables, fruit trees, nursery stock, …

Review Of "Glaube Liebe Hoffnung" By Ödön Von Horváth At Staatsschaupiel Dresden., William Grange
Review Of "Glaube Liebe Hoffnung" By Ödön Von Horváth At Staatsschaupiel Dresden., William Grange
Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity
Glaube Liebe Hoffnung marks the first time a Horváth play has ever been performed in Dresden, a fact remarkable in view of the city’s importance as a theatre center. In the 1920s Dresden was home to at least seven theatres, though none of them were particularly noted for premiering new plays. That Horváth has never been performed here is a reflection of the repressive cultural policy of the old German Democratic Republic; productions of Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald and of Kasimir und Karoline took place in East Germany after the “Horváth revival” in the late 1960s, but those productions did …
Dual Diffusion: Analysis And Implications For Sales Force Management, Madhavan Parthasarathy, Ravipreet S. Sohi, Ronald D. Hampton
Dual Diffusion: Analysis And Implications For Sales Force Management, Madhavan Parthasarathy, Ravipreet S. Sohi, Ronald D. Hampton
Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications
Retail resistance to an innovation can hamper its supply to consumers, thereby influencing product adoption behavior. Given this, a dual diffusion process consisting of both retail and consumer adoption is more appropriate in today's dynamic marketplace. Sales emphasis by manufacturers can strongly influence retail and consumer adoption behaviors, which would be reflected in the shapes of their respective patterns. In this paper, the authors examine the nature of retail adoption and its impact, both positive and negative, on consumer adoption. Following this, they present a strategic framework that lays out the sales management implications of the dual diffusion process.

“Introduction” To Integrative Views Of Motivation, Cognition, And Emotion, William D. Spaulding
“Introduction” To Integrative Views Of Motivation, Cognition, And Emotion, William D. Spaulding
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
One of my formative experiences as a graduate student came during a break in our afternoon-long first-year proseminar. We had been discussing the scope of psychology, or rather, listening to two professors debate the scope of psychology. Both the protagonists were clinical psychologists by training, but one had remained an empirically focused social learning theorist, while the other had pursued the study of Eastern religion, psychoanalysis, and transpersonal psychology. As the class milled about, the social learning empiricist sought some closure on the discussion. "Dick," he said to his transpersonal colleague, "it seems to me that we disagree because in …

Promoting Collaborative Learning In The Early Childhood Classroom: Reggio Emilia, Italy, And Amherst, Massachusetts., Carolyn P. Edwards, Lella Gandini, John Nimmo
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This chapter describes a study that was conducted in Reggio Emilia (Emilia Romagna, northern Italy), Pistoia (Tuscany, Italy) and Amherst (Massachusetts, USA) as part of a three study project investigating how teachers promote collaboration and community in their classrooms. The methodology involved a combination of teacher interviews with an adaptation of the “multivocal video-ethnography developed by Tobin, Wu, and Davidson (1989) for Preschool in Three Cultures. This paper describes the findings from the Collaboration Interviews with teachers in Reggio Emilia and Amherst, showing intersections and differences in their concepts of young children’s capacities for cooperation and teachers’ roles in …
Cultural Considerations In The Experience Of Aging: Two African Cultures, Patricia Draper, Henry Harpending
Cultural Considerations In The Experience Of Aging: Two African Cultures, Patricia Draper, Henry Harpending
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
We have three general conclusions to emphasize as well as an observation about aging in these [!Kung and Herero] societies that we believe deserves elaboration:
1. Old people are treated well in both these groups but not because they are scarce. Both the !Kung and the Herero are low-fertility populations so the proportion of the total population that is old is high in both groups.
2. Old people do not appreciate what appears to be the good (!Kung) and superb (Herero) social support that they receive. They have nothing good to say about being old. While we perceived very positive …
