Introduction To International Perspectives On Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Part Ii, Alan Tomkins, David Carson

Alan Tomkins Publications

Therapeutic jurisprudence (TJ) is flourishing. There is a proliferation of articles being published. In addition, books are being written, and in the past several years, conferences devoted to TJ have been held. (For a listing of over 300 books and articles, see http://www.law.arizona.edu/upr-intj and follow the “Cumulative Bibliography” link.) Some recent examples: Professors Bruce Winick and David Wexler, who developed the TI concept, teamed with former University of Denver Law Dean Edward Dauer (internationally known for his work in preventive law) to edit a special issue of the journal Psychology, Public Policy, and Law on “Therapeutic Jurisprudence and Preventive Law: …

Aversive And Disruptive Stimulus Applications For Managing Predation, John A. Shivik, Daniel J. Martin Oct 2000

Aversive And Disruptive Stimulus Applications For Managing Predation, John A. Shivik, Daniel J. Martin

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

The range expansion and reintroduction of mammalian predators (e.g., wolves, coyotes and bears) coupled with growing disfavor for traditional tools of wildlife management creates an immediate need for alternative, non-lethal, but effective techniques for managing predation on livestock. Scientists at the National Wildlife Research Center are using advanced technology and animal behavior concepts (e.g., aversive and disruptive stimuli) to develop new tools for the prevention of damage by large mammalian predators, and this paper is a review of our pilot studies investigating these techniques. Recently tested tools include behavior contingent disruptive stimulus devices for wolves and coyotes. Experiments indicate the …

Capsaicin-Treated Seed As A Squirrel Deterrent At Birdfeeders, Paul D. Curtis, Elizabeth D. Rowland, Gwen B. Curtis, Joseph A. Dunn Oct 2000

Capsaicin-Treated Seed As A Squirrel Deterrent At Birdfeeders, Paul D. Curtis, Elizabeth D. Rowland, Gwen B. Curtis, Joseph A. Dunn

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) are considered to be a pest by many bird-lovers because they take significant quantities of seed from birdfeeders. None of the available methods of protecting birdseed against squirrels is completely effective. We assessed the efficacy of treating birdseed with capsaicin oleoresin as a means of deterring squirrels. Consumption of treated and untreated whole, black-oil sunflower seed was compared by carrying out one-choice feeding trials at 3 sites near Ithaca, New York, from 11 May to 24 June 1999. The heat strength of the treated seed was 40,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHUs) (2,424 ppm) on the …

Comprehensive Management Of Commensal Bats, Stephen C. Frantz, Brian R. Laniewicz Oct 2000

Comprehensive Management Of Commensal Bats, Stephen C. Frantz, Brian R. Laniewicz

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

This paper reviews the basic concepts behind a comprehensive management approach to managing commensal species, and then considers how this approach is applied to bats that live within and about the built environment. Management activities should take into consideration the whole environment in which the target species is active, including the periodic changes that occur within that environment. Comprehensive management includes a clear understanding of: the biology, behavior and ecology of the species to be managed; the environment in which that species is active (especially harborage location); and the appropriate intervention methods used to manage such species. Interventions fall under …

Integrating Visual And Verbal Literacies In The Early Childhood Classroom , Carolyn P. Edwards, Linda Mayo Willis

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Young children have the strong desire to use all of the communicative tools their cultures and families offer them. They want to be able to do all of the things that the powerful people they admire can do, including talking, writing, drawing, using the computer, and otherwise creating and sharing ideas, memories, solutions, even jokes and feelings. Today, we live in a time when the communicative tools are changing rapidly, practically exploding before our eyes in terms of the formats and media available to us in complex combinations not seen before. What do these technological changes mean for how we …

The Americans With Disabilities Act And Academic Libraries In The Southeastern United States, Linda Lou Wiler, Eleanor Lomax Oct 2000

The Americans With Disabilities Act And Academic Libraries In The Southeastern United States, Linda Lou Wiler, Eleanor Lomax

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Individuals with disabilities are one of the fastest-growing segments of United States society. In 1970, 11.7% of the United States population was limited in activity, a major factor in measuring and identifying people with disabilities. In 1990, because of the aging of America, 13.7 % of the population could be so identified. By 1994, 15% of the population fell into this group. During this latter period, the older population stayed fairly stable but children and younger adults with disabilities increased greatly. Many different figures, depending upon the method of counting, e.g., age groups included, or whether residence was in a …

This study compares and contrasts InfoTrac and ProQuest primarily as full-text resources to supplement retrieval of references contained in the CINAHL database. These databases are analyzed by examining their scope in terms of the number and types of serials covered within specific areas using Ulrich's subject headings. Another important aspect of this study relates to the effectiveness of the two search engines for end-user retrieval and collection development.

Rethinking Human Services For Latinos In The Plains: New Paradigms And Recommendations For Practice, Robert Moreno, Lawrence P. Hernandez, Jennifer Schroeder, Ani Yazedijan Oct 2000

Rethinking Human Services For Latinos In The Plains: New Paradigms And Recommendations For Practice, Robert Moreno, Lawrence P. Hernandez, Jennifer Schroeder, Ani Yazedijan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In this paper we provide human service professionals with a foundation for understanding the cultural and programmatic issues necessary for effectively addressing the needs of Latinos within a context of demographic transition and decreases in public support for educational attainment, physical and mental health, and occupational success. A long tradition of deficit thinking has shaped many of the current models employed when addressing the needs of Latinos. The authors suggest "community/culturally centered" or "strengths-based" approaches, such as community based organizations (CBOs), as promising alternatives to current practices. Coalitions among CBOs can be the most effective method in creating and sustaining …

Review Of Working With Latino Youth: Culture, Development, And Context By Joan D. Koss-Chioino And Luis A. Vargas, Fernando Rivera Oct 2000

Review Of Working With Latino Youth: Culture, Development, And Context By Joan D. Koss-Chioino And Luis A. Vargas, Fernando Rivera

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The mental health problems Latino youth face in the United States are often misunderstood and viewed as a lack of willingness to assimilate or contribute to society. Some mental health practitioners and administrators have a hard time understanding that Latino youth, more often than not, don't "fit" the diagnosis and psychological interventions they use working with youth from dominant racial and ethnic groups. Providing, as it does, a comprehensive approach to understanding the problems Latinos and Latinas encounter growing up in US society, Working with Latino Youth can help rectify this lack of understanding.

Koss-Chioino and Vargas successfully achieve a …

Introduction: Latinos On The Great Plains: An Overview, Refugio Rochin

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

I am pleased to join co-editors Gus Carlo and Miguel Carranza in this special issue of Great Plains Research, focusing on the "Latino Experience on the Great Plains." As an invited contributor to this issue, I have decided to write from my personal knowledge and experiences as the former director of the Julian Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University from July 1994 through July 1998. It was during this time that I worked closely with a number of midwestern scholars to promote the most extensive studies and reports on Latinos of the heartland, including the Great Plains. At …

Health Care Utilization And The Status Of Latinos In Rural Meat Processing Communities, Joe Blankenau, Joni Boye-Beaman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Using interviews conducted in two Nebraska communities, we illustrate health-care challenges for Latinos in meat-processing communities. Two hundred twenty-one Latinos (48% male), primarily of Mexican descent, were interviewed face-to-face by bilingual interviewers. Fifteen percent of the respondents are between the ages of 20 and 24, 75% are between 25 and 44, and 10% are between 45 and 64. Nearly half have lived in the United States for five or fewer years. Aday's (1993) framework for predicting populations at risk is used to identify factors affecting health status and utilization. These factors include measures of human capital, social status, and social …

School Consultation, Susan M. Sheridan, Jaqui R. Richards, Tracine Y. Smoot Sep 2000

School Consultation, Susan M. Sheridan, Jaqui R. Richards, Tracine Y. Smoot

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Consultation services in schools and related settings have received increased support over recent years because of their documented effi ciency and effi cacy. Psychologists working in schools are recognizing the desirability of such services to address the needs of an increasingly complex population of students. Consultation is defi ned as an indirect problem-solving and decision- making model that involves the cooperative eff orts of a consultant (specialist) and consultees (teachers, parents, caregivers) to clarify primary needs and issues and to develop, implement, and evaluate appropriate strategies for intervention.

The Science And Theory Of Empirically Supported Treatments: A Response To Hughes, Susan M. Sheridan Sep 2000

The Science And Theory Of Empirically Supported Treatments: A Response To Hughes, Susan M. Sheridan

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

School psychologists work in dynamic contexts, and the conceptual and empirical bases that shape and inform the field are broad and diverse. As a profession, school psychology is concerned with providing services to a broad constituency base, with children and youth at the center. Because the work of school psychologists concerns helping children, there is a huge professional and ethical responsibility to ensure that what we do or the treatments we recommend have the greatest potential to result in the greatest amount of good. It is therefore important to understand the extant intervention literature base including its conceptual underpinnings, data-based …

Developing A Leadership Perspective In The Classroom, John E. Barbuto Jr. Sep 2000

Developing A Leadership Perspective In The Classroom, John E. Barbuto Jr.

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

This paper presents a normative pedagogical model that integrates leadership theory, student development, and cognitive/ego development. The first step, assessment of students’ developmental stage/ needs, uses a developmental model to assess students’ developmental and motivational needs. The second step, selection of teaching style, incorporates leadership literature to develop teaching styles selected based on the developmental and motivational needs of students. The third step in the continuous process, evaluation of outcomes, involves assessment of either continued development and/or increased student motivation and improved student learning. Research and teaching implications of the proposed model are also discussed.

Alcohol Expectancies Among Adolescents In Inner Mongolia, Ian Newman, Ming Qu, Duane F. Shell, Yuching Li, Fangfang Gao Sep 2000

Alcohol Expectancies Among Adolescents In Inner Mongolia, Ian Newman, Ming Qu, Duane F. Shell, Yuching Li, Fangfang Gao

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Female students were more likely to report global negative expectancies, while male students were more likely to report stronger positive social perception expectancies. The 11th and 12th graders expected more negative effects from drinking including global negative effects and negative personal effects than did the 10th graders. Nondrinkers and occasional drinkers reported greater expectancies of negative personal effects and negative perceptions of drinking than regular-drinkers. In contrast, regular drinkers more often reported expectancies of positive social perception, tension reduction and pleasure. social courtesy, social facilitation. and beneficial drinking. The results suggest that alcohol expectancies among Chinese adolescents in Inner Mongolia …

Social Anxiety Scale For Adolescents: Normative Data And Further Evidence Of Construct Validity, Heidi M. Inderbitzen-Nolan, Kenneth S. Walters

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Replicates and extends prior work with the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS– A) by providing psychometric data, further evidence of construct validity, and largesample based normative data. Participants were 2,937 students (1,431 boys and 1,506 girls) in Grades 6, 7, 8, 9, and 11. Students completed the SAS–A, the Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), and the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI). Results replicated a three-factor structure for the SAS–A, with good internal consistencies for its subscales. Normative data were subdivided by sex and grade group. Construct validity included replication of prior relations with general anxiety (RCMAS) and depressive symptomatology …

A Comparative Analysis Of Teachers', Caucasian Parents', And Hispanic Parents' Views Of Problematic School Survival Behaviors, Lisa Aaroe, J. Ron Nelson Aug 2000

A Comparative Analysis Of Teachers', Caucasian Parents', And Hispanic Parents' Views Of Problematic School Survival Behaviors, Lisa Aaroe, J. Ron Nelson

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Scholars have asserted that the misclassification of culturally diverse students in programs for students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) may be attributable, at least in part, to the mismatch between the behavioral expectations present in the students' home environments and those prevalent within schools. A preliminary study was conducted to explore whether Caucasian and Hispanic parents' views of negative classroom and interpersonal school survival behaviors were consistent with one another and with those of general and special education teachers. Overall, the results suggest that parents (Caucasian and Hispanic) generally hold similar views regarding the extent to which it was …

Fundamentals Of Economic Principles And Wildlife Management, Peter W. Schuhmann, Kurt A. Schwabe Aug 2000

Fundamentals Of Economic Principles And Wildlife Management, Peter W. Schuhmann, Kurt A. Schwabe

Human Conflicts with Wildlife: 2002 Symposium

This paper presents an overview of the economic fundamentals involved in wildlife management, with special consideration for cases involving harmful wildlife-human interactions. The process of benefit-cost analysis is used as a unifying platform for incorporating both theoretical and empirical issues. Topics such as external market effects and public goods are detailed in order to give the reader a theoretical foundation for understanding the economic perspective on the problems associated with defining and attaining optimally managed wildlife populations. To these principles we add practical considerations for measuring the costs and benefits associated with wildlife populations. Different categories of wildlife values, such …

Mechanical Mouse Lure For Brown Treesnakes, Alexandria C. Lindberg, John A. Shivik, Larry Clark Jul 2000

Mechanical Mouse Lure For Brown Treesnakes, Alexandria C. Lindberg, John A. Shivik, Larry Clark

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The importance of prey movement for stimulating feeding behavior of Brown Treesnakes was tested by using a mechanical mouse model in combination with and without prey odor. Prey movement was found to be important in stimulating brown treesnake feeding behavior. Prey movement combined with prey odor was not significantly different than prey movement alone. In the development of simple artificial lures based on the stimulus of live mice, visual lures lacking movement are likely to be ineffective. Lures that combine a visual moving stimulus with prey odor are likely to be the most effective artificial lure for trapping brown treesnakes.

Review Of New Worlds From Old: 19th Century Australian And American Landscapes By Elizabeth Johns, Andrew Sayers, And Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser, With Amy Ellis, Julie K. Brown Jul 2000

Review Of New Worlds From Old: 19th Century Australian And American Landscapes By Elizabeth Johns, Andrew Sayers, And Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser, With Amy Ellis, Julie K. Brown

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

An exhibition of nineteenth-century landscape art from the United States and Australia (the latter a British colony until federation in 1901) is such an excellent idea one wonders why it has not been done before. Such an ambitious and challenging project, however, has some inherent dangers in collapsing historical differences for the sake of presentation. Assessing cultural productions must take into account distinct histories in these two "settler countries," especially in the creation of their respective national identities-as Lyn Spillman has already demonstrated in her excellent Nation and Commemoration: Creating National Identities in the United States and Australia (1997).
