Property Modification Of Edible Wheat, Gluten-Based Films, A. Gennadios, Curtis L. Weller, R. F. Testin Jan 1993

Property Modification Of Edible Wheat, Gluten-Based Films, A. Gennadios, Curtis L. Weller, R. F. Testin

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Procedures were developed to produce edible wheat, gluten-based films. A film was produced as a standard. Five additional films were then produced by modifying the initial film-forming solution. Modifications included changing the plasticizer, partially substituting wheat gluten with soy protein isolate and corn zein, and incorporating two acetylated monoglyceride products. All films were characterized by measuring selected mechanical properties, and permeabilities to water vapor and to oxygen. Comparison of the films, in terms of their measured properties, indicates ways to improve the overall performance of the standard film as a potential packaging material. A main limitation of all of the …

Effect Of Calcium Source, Dietary Calcium Concentration, And Gestation Phase On Various Bone Characteristics In Gestating Gilts, G. L. Walker, D. M. Danielson, E. R. Peo, Jr., R. F. Mumm Jan 1993

Effect Of Calcium Source, Dietary Calcium Concentration, And Gestation Phase On Various Bone Characteristics In Gestating Gilts, G. L. Walker, D. M. Danielson, E. R. Peo, Jr., R. F. Mumm

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Sixty gravid crossbred gilts were allotted to a 2 x 3 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments: two Ca sources (sun-cured alfalfa meal and CaC03), three dietary concentrations of Ca (50, 75, and 100% of NRC requirements), and two phases of gestation (55 and 105 d). The objectives were to determine the effect of Ca source, dietary Ca concentration, and gestation phase on bone characteristics (bone breaking strength, bone ash percentage, bone density, and bone ash density in the rib, thoracic, and coccygeal bones), to correlate bone responses to determine relative bone activity, and to determine reliability of …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of dose of exogenous progesterone (P4) prior to artificial insemination on concentrations of 17β-estradiol (E2) and on conception rates in bovine females. Heifers (n = 100) and cows (n = 100) received P4-releasing intravaginal devices (PRIDs) to produce two different circulating concentrations of P4. All animals received a single PRID 10 days before (Day -10) the start of the breeding season (Day 0). In animals that received the low dose of P4 (1 PRID, target concentration of 2-3 ng/ml of plasma), …

1993 Issues Review Jan 1993

1993 Issues Review

Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration

This self-study document was prepared by the faculty and staff of the South Central Research and Extension Center in preparation for the unit review.

The format for this review differs from past reviews in two primary areas. First, the review focuses on issues; thus the emphasis is on looking forward rather than evaluating the past. Second, the review team is largely composed of IANR staff who are familiar with the organization and programming processes. Because of these differences, this document emphasizes the issues and the processes which occurred to arrive at this point. The limited background data is included to …

Community Adjustment Of Young Adults With Mental Retardation: A Developmental Perspective, Richard F. Ittenbach, Sheryl A. Larson, Amy N. Spiegel, Brian H. Abery, Robert W. Prouty Jan 1993

Community Adjustment Of Young Adults With Mental Retardation: A Developmental Perspective, Richard F. Ittenbach, Sheryl A. Larson, Amy N. Spiegel, Brian H. Abery, Robert W. Prouty

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The community adjustment of young adults with mental retardation remains a crucial issue for all human service providers. No longer does adjustment imply simply the physical integration of persons with disabilities into community settings. Rather, it refers to the adjustment and integration of the whole person into community life. Whether one describes community adjustment as a process, an outcome, a philosophy, or a multidimensional concept (Bachrach, 1981), community adjustment has become synonymous with the term quality-of-life, a quality that depends in large part on one’s happiness and success in socially sanctioned, age-appropriate tasks.

Evidence For Mate Choice By Male Guppies (Poecilia Reticulata), Joseph J. Benz, Daniel W. Leger Jan 1993

Evidence For Mate Choice By Male Guppies (Poecilia Reticulata), Joseph J. Benz, Daniel W. Leger

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Mate choice by males in organisms that do not make obviously costly contributions to offspring should be expected where sperm production is limited and courtship time is finite. Although male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) contribute only sperm to their offspring, preliminary evidence points to male mate choice in this species. Thus, the hypothesis that male guppies choose their mates was investigated. Mate choice was measured by giving males a choice of different-sized females, using only visual cues. The data revealed that males preferred large females over small females whether they were presented singly, in pairs, or with a small …

Seasonal Trends In Forage Quality Of Plants In Subirrigated Meadows Of The Nebraska Sandhills, James T. Nichols, Paul A. Duncan, Don C. Clanton Jan 1993

Seasonal Trends In Forage Quality Of Plants In Subirrigated Meadows Of The Nebraska Sandhills, James T. Nichols, Paul A. Duncan, Don C. Clanton

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Hay from subirrigated meadows is the primary source of forage for wintering beef cattle in the Nebraska Sandhills. Hay quality is an important consideration if the nutritional needs of livestock are to be met. Since the overall quality of the hay is a product of the individual components, quantifying the quality parameters of each species can be helpful in making management decisions in relation to harvesting schedules and manipulation of species composition. In-vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) and crude protein (CP) were analyzed for ten of the most important forage species to quantify seasonal trends in …

An Investigation Of The Exclusion Of Students With Disabilities In National Data Collection Programs, Kevin S. Mcgrew, Martha L. Thurlow, Amy N. Spiegel Jan 1993

An Investigation Of The Exclusion Of Students With Disabilities In National Data Collection Programs, Kevin S. Mcgrew, Martha L. Thurlow, Amy N. Spiegel

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

This investigation examined the extent to which students with disabilities are involved in a select sample of national data collection programs that are playing a pivotal role in the measurement-driven educational reform movement. Nine data collection programs that are receiving significant attention in current educational reform initiatives were reviewed. The results suggest that approxi-mately 40% to 50% of school-age students with disabilities are excluded from some of the most prom-inent national educational data collection programs. In contrast, students with disabilities are included to a greater degree in noneducational data collection programs that do not require partici-pation in direct assessment activities. …

Dependence Of 3 Nebraska Sandhills Warm-Season Grasses On Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae, John J. Brejda, D. H. Yocom, Lowell E. Moser, Steven S. Waller Jan 1993

Dependence Of 3 Nebraska Sandhills Warm-Season Grasses On Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae, John J. Brejda, D. H. Yocom, Lowell E. Moser, Steven S. Waller

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) are rare or absent in actively eroding soils of the Sandhills. The objective of this study was to determine if 3 major Sandhills warm-season grasses used in reseeding eroded Sandhills sites are highly mycorrhizal dependent, and evaluate the response of VAM at different phosphorus (P) levels. In 2 greenhouse experiments, sand bluestem [Andropogon gerardii var. paucipilus (Nash) Fern.], switchgrass, (Panicum virgatum L.), and prairie sandreed [Calamovilfa longifolio (Hook) Scribn.] were grown in steam-sterilized sand in pots and inoculated with either indigenous Sandhills VAM, Glomus deserticola, or noninoculated. In the second experiment, VAM inoculated …

A Comparison Of Adaptive Strategies And Patterns Of Victimization Among Homeless Adolescents And Adults, Les B. Whitbeck, Ronald L. Simons Jan 1993

A Comparison Of Adaptive Strategies And Patterns Of Victimization Among Homeless Adolescents And Adults, Les B. Whitbeck, Ronald L. Simons

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

One hundred and fifty-six homeless adolescents and 319 homeless adults interviewed directly on the streets and in shelters were compared for backgrounds of abuse, adaptations to life on the streets, and rates of criminal victimization when on the streets. Homeless adolescents were more likely to be from abusive family backgrounds, more likely to rely on deviant survival strategies, and more likely to be criminally victimized. A social learning model of adaptation and victimization on the streets was hypothesized. Although the model was supported for both homeless adults and adolescents, it was more strongly supported for adolescents than adults, and for …

Rice Insects: The Role Of Host Plant Resistance In Integrated Management Systems, E. A. Heinrichs Sep 1992

Rice Insects: The Role Of Host Plant Resistance In Integrated Management Systems, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Insects are among the most important abiotic and biotic constraints to rice production. National rice research programs are in various stages in the development and implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) stratagies for rice insect control. Among the various control tactics, insect resistant cultivars are sought as the major tactic in rice IPM. Through the activities of interdisciplinary teams of scientists significant progress has been made in the development and release of insect resistant cultivars to farmers. Because of its compatibility with other control tactics insect resistance has proven to fit well into the IPM approach to rice insect control …
