Homeless And Working Street Youth In Latin America: A Developmental Review, Marcela Raffaelli Apr 1999

Homeless And Working Street Youth In Latin America: A Developmental Review, Marcela Raffaelli

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In most Latin American countries, a substantial proportion of children grow up in circumstances of extreme deprivation and early independence. These include "street youth", youngsters who work and sometimes live on city streets in developing countries. Most street youth research has been conducted from an applied perspective and emphasizes service and policy needs. Little developmental research has been conducted with street youth, and the long-term impact of street life is largely unknown. This review synthesizes empirical findings on the developmentally-relevant experiences of sub-groups of street youth in Latin America. It includes research in four areas: social networks, daily survival, health …

A Topographic Map Of Words Parables Of Cartography In William Least Heat,Moon's Prairyerth, O. Alan Weltzien

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In "Thought and Landscape," geographer Yi-Fu Tuan describes an essential double perspective required for any comprehensive understanding of rural landscape. A geographer studies landscape "from 'above,'" for example, but "The side view ... is personal, moral, and aesthetic. A person is in the landscape ... from a particular spot and not from an abstract point in space. If the essential character of landscape is that it combines these two views (objective and subjective), it is clear that the combination can take place only in the mind's eye. Landscape appears to us through an effort of the imagination .... It is …

Baseline Susceptibility Of European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) To Bacillus Thuringiensis Toxins, Paula C. R. G. Macron, Linda J. Young, Kevin L. Steffey, Blair Siegfried Apr 1999

Baseline Susceptibility Of European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) To Bacillus Thuringiensis Toxins, Paula C. R. G. Macron, Linda J. Young, Kevin L. Steffey, Blair Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Susceptibility to CrylAb and CrylAc toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis was determined for 11 populations of neonate European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hiibner), from the United States and 1 from northern Italy. Corn borer larvae were exposed to artificial diet treated with increasing B. thuringiensis concentrations, and mortality and growth inhibition were evaluated after 7 d. The range of variation in B. thuringiensis susceptibility indicated by growth inhibition was very similar to that indicated by mortality. Although interpopulation variation in susceptibility to both proteins was observed, the magnitude of the differences was small (54-fold) and comparable to the variability observed among …

Philosophy And Purposes Of Distance Education, Dr. Janet K. Poley, Mr. Erik France

Nebraska Network 21: Publications

In considering how best to tackle this topic, I ultimately decided that in Nebraska the "best" approach is usually the "most straight forward" one. Given that much of the conversation about distance education is filled with myth and marketing hype, I decided what we could best contribute to the conversation would be the facts. While some of the other authors may have a better in-depth grasp of distance education opportunities and realities in Nebraska, Erik and I come as native Nebraskans with a good understanding of the history, economy, communities and cultures in our home state. My early faculty career …

Integration Of Hydroxyapatite Concentration Of Bacteria And Seminested Pcr To Enhance Detection Of Salmonella Typhimurium From Ground Beef And Bovine Carcass Sponge Samples, Elaine D. Berry, Gregory R. Siragusa Jan 1999

Integration Of Hydroxyapatite Concentration Of Bacteria And Seminested Pcr To Enhance Detection Of Salmonella Typhimurium From Ground Beef And Bovine Carcass Sponge Samples, Elaine D. Berry, Gregory R. Siragusa

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Hydroxyapatite (HA) concentration of bacteriafiom ground beef and bovine carcass sponge samples was examined as a method to enhance the PCR detection of Salmonella typhimurium in these samples. Ground beef and carcass sponge samples were inoculated with progressively lower levels of S. typhimurium. Concentrated (10% HA) and unconcentrated samples were prepared for PCR after 0, 2, 3, or 4 h of nonselective enrichment. Without HA concentration and enrichment, Salmonella in ground beef was not detected by seminested PCR, even when present at levels of 103 cells/mL in the 1:10 ground beef homogenates. However, when bacteria in these samples were …

Statistical Validation Of The Track-Dilution Plating Method From Ground Beef And Carcass Surface Samples, Gregory R. Siragusa

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

A rapid and easy method of obtaining a viable culture count, the Track-Dilution method, was evaluated and compared to Spiral Plating to obtain viable culture counts from ground beef samples and beef carcass su$ace tissue samples inoculated with salmonellae or Escherichia coli OIS7:H7. Based on the statistical analysis of the dataset (n = 125 samples), the Track-Dilution method results were not diflerent (P > 0.1) than those obtainedfiom Spiral Plating. Linear correlation of the scatterplot of Spiral Plating and Track-Dilution indicated a high level of agreement between these two methocis (9 = 0.97). The Track-Dilution method was a valid method for …

Intsormil 1999 Annual Report, John M. Yohe, Thomas Crawford Jr., Joan Frederick, Dorothy Stoner

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

Presently, worldwide, more than 800 million people do not get enough to eat or have access to a balanced diet to be healthy. At the World Food Summit in 1996, the United States of America (USA) and 185 other countries pledged to reduce the number of malnourished people by one half by 2015. It is shocking that about 33% of preschool children in developing countries will be stunted due to malnutrition by the year 2000. The number of stunted children in Africa alone has increased significantly from 35 million in 1980 to 45 million in 1995 and is predicted to …

G99-1375 Lilacs, Dale T. Lindgren, Don Steinegger, Todd Morrisey

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses lilac species, propagation, culture and pests.

Lilacs are among the most versatile shrubs grown in Nebraska. They come in various shapes, sizes, flower types and flower colors. Time of flowering also varies with species and cultivars. Lilacs can be used statewide for wind screens, hedges, accent plants or strictly for flower beauty and fragrance. Their drought and winter hardiness makes them easy to grow. They can survive, even when neglected, but perform better with care. Good soil drainage and full sun exposure are essential for optimal performance.

Review Of New Information On The Use Of Wet And Dry Milling Feed By-Products In Feedlot Diets, Rick Stock, J. M. Lewis, Terry J. Klopfenstein, C. T. Milton Jan 1999

Review Of New Information On The Use Of Wet And Dry Milling Feed By-Products In Feedlot Diets, Rick Stock, J. M. Lewis, Terry J. Klopfenstein, C. T. Milton

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The processing of grains to produce human foods, beverages, or fuel ethanol has resulted in a wide variety of associated feed by-products. Hominy feed and distillers by-products are feed by-products associated with two distinctly different drymilling industries. Hominy feed contains approximately 57% starch, 11% CP, and 5% fat (DM basis). When fed to finishing cattle, hominy feed has approximately 87% the net energy value of corn. Distillers by-products contain 25 to 32% CP and 13 to 16% fat (DM basis). Wet distillers by-products have approximately 97 to 147% the net energy value of corn. The energy value of wet distillers …

Long-Term Studies Of Hantavirus Reservoir Populations In The Southwestern United States: A Synthesis, James N. Mills, Thomas G. Ksiazek, C.J. Peters, James E. Childs

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

A series of intensive, longitudinal, mark-recapture studies of hantavirus infection dynamics in reservoir populations in the southwestern United States indicates consistent patterns as well as important differences among sites and host-virus associations. All studies found a higher prevalence of infection in older (particularly male) mice; one study associated wounds with seropositivity. These findings are consistent with horizontal transmission and transmission through fighting between adult male rodents. Despite very low rodent densities at some sites, low-level hantavirus infection continued, perhaps because of persistent infection in a few long-lived rodents or periodic reintroduction of virus from neighboring populations. Prevalence of hantavirus antibody …

Plant And Breeding Bird Communities Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies And Non-Colonized Areas In Southwest Kansas And Southeast Colorado, Stephen L. Winter Jan 1999

Plant And Breeding Bird Communities Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies And Non-Colonized Areas In Southwest Kansas And Southeast Colorado, Stephen L. Winter

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This research was initiated to determine if plant and bird communities on black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus Ord) colonies in southwest Kansas and southeast Colorado differed from those found on associated non-colonized areas. Vegetation height and density, and the cover and frequency of numerous plant species differed between prairie dog colonies and non-colonized areas that were co-dominated by mid-height grasses and shortgrasses. A comparison of prairie dog colonies with non-colonized areas that were dominated solely by shortgrasses did not reveal a difference in vegetation height and density. The number of species that differed in cover or frequency between prairie dog …

Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange And Ultraviolet Resonance Raman Spectroscopy Of Bacteria In A Complex Food Matrix, Gregory P. Harhay, Gregory R. Siragusa

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The rapid identification and quantification of pathogenic foodborne bacteria is a national research priority. Data collected with a new spectrochemical method suggests that resonance Raman spectroscopy can rapidly and selectively identify and quantify bacteria in foods and other complex biomatrices. This method utilizes hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDE) to resolve the spectral fingerprints of individual components in the overlapped regions of the ultraviolet resonance Raman spectra of heterogeneous samples. We illustrate this concept with HDE-induced changes in the spectra of bacteria and beef carcass wash samples. The data presented here suggest that the combination of ultraviolet resonance Raman spectroscopy and HDE can …
