Metabolism Studies With Algin And Gelatin, Hugo W. Nilson, J. M. Lemon Jan 1942

Metabolism Studies With Algin And Gelatin, Hugo W. Nilson, J. M. Lemon

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Algin, a salt of alginic acid extracted from kelp, and gelatin, produced from animal bones and skins, are used as stabilizing agents in the manufacture of ice cream and in certain other food products. Studies were conducted over a period of 10 weeks to determine the nutritive effects of the vegetable gum of algin and the protein of gelatin.

The apparent digestibility of algin varied directly with the level fed. Algin was utilized efficiently after absorption. Gelatin was highly digested irrespective of the level fed, but more food was required per unit increase in live weight. No characteriztic symptoms were …

Threonine Deficiency In Hydrolysates Of Zein Prepared By Autoclaving, Raymond Borchers, John R. Totter, Clarence P. Berg Jan 1942

Threonine Deficiency In Hydrolysates Of Zein Prepared By Autoclaving, Raymond Borchers, John R. Totter, Clarence P. Berg

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

In a previous paper (Borchers and Berg, 1942) we showed that

autoclaving zein with sulfuric acid longer than necessary for complete

hydrolysis causes destruction and racemization; either of

these might account for the failure of such a hydrolysate to

promote growth in young rats when substituted for a hvdrolysate,

prepared by refiuxing, in a diet which produced moderate growth.

It seemed to us that this deterioration in the dietary protein might

well be the result primarily of essential amino acid deficiencies

which could be detected and overcome by appropriate supplementation.

Because threonine is known to be present in zein in …

Native Midwestern Pastures: Their Origin, Composition, And Degeneration, J. E. Weaver, W. W. Hansen Feb 1941

Native Midwestern Pastures: Their Origin, Composition, And Degeneration, J. E. Weaver, W. W. Hansen

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

According to Doctor J. E. Weaver and Mr. W. W. Hansen the purpose of this bulletin is to present certain facts involved in range and pasture management by outlining in some detail the fundamental phenomenon of vegetational change upon which all rational pasture studies must be based. They maintain that the native prairie vegetation is an organic entity in close adjustment with soil and climate, which has developed gradually to its present condition of dynamic stabilization. When the prairie is grazed and trampled, various changes occur, the nature and extent of which vary somewhat directly with the degree of disturbance, …

Ec41-9940 Home Made Bread And Rolls, Mabel Doremus Jan 1941

Ec41-9940 Home Made Bread And Rolls, Mabel Doremus

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Bread making is often referred to as one of the "lost arts." This is far from the truth even in these days when women participate in a wide variey of activities. Today's women are constantly alert to modern trends, and one of the most important concerns is good bread for the family.

Since bread is served so often in one formor another, it is most desirable that it be of excellent quality. The homemaker who takes pride in serving good foods often bakes some or all of the bread for her family. She decides whether she will bake or buy, …

All chicks of both lots consumed equal amounts of nitrogen during the experiment. 3. Conclusions were based on increases in body weight and content of nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus at slaughter.

Occurrence Of A Disease Of Side-Oats Grama, R. L. Fowler, J. E. Weaver Jun 1940

Occurrence Of A Disease Of Side-Oats Grama, R. L. Fowler, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The beginning of a disease of Boateloua curtipendula, first observed in 1937 but occurring in alarming proportions in 1939, is of much interest. The fact that this grass has increased greatly during the past six years, from a rank of seventh or eighth among dominants of true prairie to one of the two or three most important species, adds unusual economic interest. Moreover, side-oats grama not only has very wide distribution and is being grown abundantly in grass nurseries of the Soil Conservation Service but also it is one of the most drought-resistant among the best grasses for rejuvenating …

The Influence Of Whole Wheat, Bran And Shorts On Body Weight And Feather Growth In Chicks, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson, M. J. Blish May 1940

The Influence Of Whole Wheat, Bran And Shorts On Body Weight And Feather Growth In Chicks, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson, M. J. Blish

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The proteins of the entire wheat kernel and of the bran and shorts are apparently utilized with equal efficiency by growing chicks when used with a base of corn, barley, oats, meat scraps, fish meal, and soybean meal. The relatively higher protein levels of bran and shorts, as compared to ground wheat, should be considered by the poultry producer in deciding which product or products can be used with greatest economy. A good concentration of a feather-growth factor is found in wheat bran. Other common feedstuffs carry the same essential, and the amount of bran which should be used in …

Ecology And Land Use, Edward H. Graham Jan 1940

Ecology And Land Use, Edward H. Graham

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

AULUS, the Roman, spoke proudly when he announced that at last they knew malaria ~ was caused by the night air. Then, like other intelligent Romans of his day, he ordered all the doors and windows of his home tightly closed from sundown to sunrise to exclude the "pestilence that walketh by night." Little did the Romans realize that 1,500 years would pass before the truth would be known about malaria-that the disease is carried by the Anopheles mosquito. Yet of all the plagues of human history malaria probably has taken the heaviest toll of human lives. For twenty-five hundred …
