Effect Of Dietary Calcium And Phosphorus Level Upon Calcium, Phosphorus And Nitrogen Balance In Swine, P. E. Vipperman, Jr., E. R. Peo, Jr., P. J. Cunningham
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Three metabolism trials were conducted to determine the effects of dietary calcium and phosphorus level upon calcium, phosphorus and nitrogen balance in growing swine. The nine pigs in each trial averaged 22.6, 25.2 and 26.5 kg initially for trials 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The diets contained three levels of calcium and three levels of phosphorus and were rotated among the pigs in the three trials. Feed intake was adjusted to metabolic size.

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Natural habitats usually do not provide bacteria the continuity of agricultural crops. With continuous culture. perpetuation of pathogen is no problem. Although agricul tural practices provide some discontinuity between crops. it is less than that in nature. Uniformity of crop germ plasm also favors inoculum buildup and perhaps perpetuation of the pathogens.

In these exciting times when elementary and high schools teach modern biology, including many of the intricacies of biochemical genetics, the long slow process by which our present knowledge in this area was gained is not often fully appreciated. A third of a century elapsed before Mendel’s work was "rediscovered" and properly appreciated. Archibald E. Garrod’s (1) prophetic appreciation of the relation genetics and biochemistry, beginning soon after the so-called rediscovery of Mendel, lay fallow for more than forty years despite the fact that he published widely and relatively voluminously. As late as a quarter of a century after the …

Nsca - Asc - National Plan For Biological Collections, Asc Committee
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
American systematics collections: A national plan. Developed by a stellar group of biologists including David Wake and Peter Raven, this plan called for action by the systematics community. The estimate of needs in 1973 called for about 63 million USD for the next five years just to keep the US National Collections from disintegrating and to get them in shape to mount the huge effort needed to fully inventory the biota of the earth (a plan that was not even dreamed of until about the year 1995).
A report to the nation's systematics collections community, and includes a National Plan …

Morphological And Physiological Factors Related To Yield Of Alfalfa, A. L. Foutz, Wallace Wilhelm, A. K. Dobrenz
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Several morphological and physiological factors were measured on clones of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. ‘Mesa- Sirsa’) which displayed a wide range in SLW, leaflet weight and leaflet area. Apparent photosynthesis, dark respiration and post-illumination burst expressed as mg C02 dm-2hr-1 were not related to yield. However, when the rate of each factor was expressed on a whole plant basis (rate x leaf area per plant) , significant relationships were found with yield. Correlation coefficients between total apparent photosynthesis, total dark respiration, total post-illumination C02 burst and yield were r = .71*, r = .77* …

Results Of Systematic Analyses For Protein And Lysine Composition Of Common Wheats (Triticum Aestivum L.) In The Usda World Collection, K. P. Vogel, V. A. Johnson, P. J. Mattern
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Protein and lysine contents of 12,613 common wheats of the USDA World Wheat Collection were determined in order to identify wheats that may be sources of genes for high protein and high lysine. Results indicate that significant genetic differences in protein and lysine content probably exist among world collection common wheats. Selection criteria have been developed for further evaluation of World Collection lines high in protein and lysine content.

Night Flight Across A Blue Sky: Prognostics, Robert H. Giles Jr.
Night Flight Across A Blue Sky: Prognostics, Robert H. Giles Jr.
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The purpose of this presentation is to gain new perspectives on pest control and related phenomena. Some will call it “blue sky.” I would claim it informal futuristics. Systems men call such efforts feedforward; others grandify it with “prognostics.” Some say prognostics is one of the leading challenges of the day. We must anticipate future developments and imagine or invent new alternatives as a background for rational choice. The activity can influence today’s decisions, modify our concepts of risks and probable payoffs, and can help those of us who ask: “What am I really doing; what should I be doing?”

The Effects Of Soil Salinity And Meloidoflyne Javanica On Tomato, Armand R. Maggenti, Adnan Hardan
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
A non-sodic, non-saline sandy loam soil was salinized to anion-cation ratios similar to those naturally occurring in Iraq and California. The interactions of saline soils (conductivities 4, 8, 12 and 16 mmhos/cm) with a moderately salt-tolerant plant (Lycopersicon esculentum 'Marimond') and a plant parasitic nematode (Meloidogyne favanica) were investigated. Plant parasitic nematodes were shown to be an important modifying influence within the plant environment, either accentuating or ameliorating salinity stress effects.

Bacteriophage Φ6: A Lipid-Containing Virus Of Pseudomonas Phaseolicola, Anne K. Vidaver, R. K. Koski, James L. Van Etten
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The purification and properties of a lipid-containing bacteriophage, φ 6, are described. The phage contains a lipid envelope which is probably essential for infection. Infectivity of φ 6 was lost in the presence of organic solvents, sodium deoxycholate, and phospholipase A. The fatty acid composition of the phage lipid was similar to that of the Pseudomonas phaseolicola host cells. The phage was composed of about 25% lipid, 13% RNA, and 62% protein. The buoyant density of φ6 was 1.27 g/ml in cesium chloride. The morphology of φ6 was unusual; it had a polyhedral head of about 60 nm surrounded by …

Control Of Pantothenate Accumulation In Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Tsuneo Kaneshiro, Larry O. Arthur, Kenneth W. Nickerson
Control Of Pantothenate Accumulation In Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Tsuneo Kaneshiro, Larry O. Arthur, Kenneth W. Nickerson
Papers in Microbiology
Two pantothenate-requiring mutants of Agrobacterium tumefaciens have been isolated. One of them (strain WMP-1) is unusual in that growth levels equivalent to the parent strain are achieved only when the medium is additionally supplemented with aspartate or another compound related to the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Extracts of cells grown on limiting aspartate were found to contain four times more 14IC-pantothenate than th6se grown at optimal aspartate concentrations. This difference was found in both the perchloric acid-soluble and -insoluble fractions, presumably the coenzyme A pool and acyl carrier protein, respectively. These findings are discussed in terms of membrane integrity and …

G73-15 Handling Feed Moisture In Ration Formulation And Inventory Control (Revised December 1983), Paul Q. Guyer
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Nutritional quality control begins with knowing and adjusting for variation in the moisture content of feed ingredients. Moisture variations in feeds are almost always of more importance than variations in protein, mineral, and energy. Inventory control is affected by moisture content of feeds. Some feeds on hand are constantly changing in moisture content, and these changes frequently lead to financial losses when a price adjustment is not made for moisture losses.
Ec73-1907 Internal Parasites Of Cattle, D. L. Ferguson
Ec73-1907 Internal Parasites Of Cattle, D. L. Ferguson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Extension Circular 73-1907 is about internal parasites in cows and how they affect cattle production.
Internal parasites continue to be one of the major problems confronting cattle producers. In 1965, the United States Department of Agriculture estimated that internal parasites in cattle caused an average annual loss of $161,678,000. The internal parasites responsible for the annual loss are listed below.
Anaplasmosis. .$ 36,001,000
Coccidiosis . . . .14,569,000
Worm Parasites .100,046,000
Liver Flukes . . . 3,022,000
Trichomoniasis .. 8,040,000
In cattle the effects of internal parasites will be well camouflaged. However, additional feed will be required to reach market …
