Parameters Of Growth Of Holstein-Friesian Bulls, L. L. Calo, R. E. Mcdowell, L. Dale Van Vleck, P. D. Miller
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Growth records of 504 pedigree selected Holstein-Friesian bulls by 120 sires collected for progeny testing at the American Breeders Service, Inc., DeForest, Wisconsin from 1964 to 1971, were studied to determine the shape of the growth curve, relationships among body weights and growth rates at various ages and to estimate heritability of growth. Body weight and average/daily gain were consistently higher than the previous growth standards for Holstein-Friesian bulls. Bulls weighed about 480 kg at 15 months, which was 46% of average mature weight. Average daily gain ranged from 1.3 to 0.8 kg between 6 and 18 months of age. …

Evaluation Of Purebreds And Two-Breed Crosses In Swine: Feedlot Performance And Carcass Merit , R. K. Johnson, I. T. Omtvedt, L. E. Walters
Evaluation Of Purebreds And Two-Breed Crosses In Swine: Feedlot Performance And Carcass Merit , R. K. Johnson, I. T. Omtvedt, L. E. Walters
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Feedlot performance of 941 barrows and gilts and carcass traits of 190 barrows of purebreds and crossbreds of the Duroc, Hampshire and Yorkshire breeds were evaluated for differences between purebreds and reciprocal crosses and for heterosis. Purebred and crossbred litters were farrowed contemporaneously at the Ft. Reno Experiment Station in the 1971 spring and fall farrowing seasons. Rather distinct differences between the pure breeds were evident for most traits. In general, Durocs gained weight more rapidly than Hampshires and Yorkshires while Yorkshires were the most efficient pure breed. Hampshire barrows had less backfat, more loin eye area and more total …
G73-14 Grain Processing For Feedlot Cattle, Paul Q. Guyer
G73-14 Grain Processing For Feedlot Cattle, Paul Q. Guyer
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Several changes have occurred in the cattle feeding business which have focused attention on grain processing. The first of these was, the arrival of big feedlots provided an opportunity to use larger and more sophisticated processing equipment at reasonable cost per ton of feed produced. Also, the need to minimize feed separation and digestive disturbances encouraged the use of more sophisticated methods of processing.
A second development that is now focusing attention on grain processing is the rapidly increasing costs of equipment, fuel and labor involved in grain processing. In recent years, these have been increasing more rapidly than the …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Records from two herds in India and two in Columbia representing respectively two breeds of Bos indicus (Hariana and Deshi) and two Bos taurus breeds—Blanco Orejinegro (BON) and Costeño Con Cuernos (CCC) were evaluated for breeding efficiency and viability. Average age at first calving was 52.1, 46.3, 39.5 and 40.7 months for Hariana, Deshi, CCC and BON. Season of birth did not influence age at calving. Ranking for calving interval was similar, average 479, 418, 396 and 382 days with season effects significant (P<.05) for only Deshi. BON and CCC had fewer days open but much shorter lactation periods, average 73 and 157, thus days carried calf in lactation were similar for all breeds. Percent of time dry per calving interval was high for all breeds, 44.2, 36.7, 64.1 and 81.0 for Hariana, Deshi, BON and CCC. Average annual mortality of females by 12 months of age was 23.6% for Hariana, 17.0% Deshi and 27.0% BON. In the same herds 46.4%, 51.1% and 49.0% of females born alive lived to first calving and annual losses among cows were 18.0%, 17.0%, and 21.0%; therefore, affording little opportunity for selection among females. Temperament, as determined by response to the milking process with and without the calf present, showed all the breeds were similar in this respect. Environmental effects were most important for all traits but genetic differences were indicated for age at first calving and milk yield. On a theoretical basis little gain could be expected in net dairy merit from crosses between the Columbian and Indian breeds.

Collard Insect Control, E. A. Heinrichs, E. E. Burgess, Charles A. Mullins
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Collards, Brassica oleracea var. viridis, because of their nutritional value, are important vegetables in the diets of many Tennesseans. According to a survey conducted by R. D. Freeland of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, Tennessee produced 1,544 acres of fresh and 4,405 acres of processor collards in 1971. Most were grown on the Cumberland Plateau and in West Tennessee. Many insects attack collard foliage. Flea beetle feeding causes "shot holes" in the leaf. Various caterpillars such as the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hubner) , and the imported cabbageworm, Pieris rapae (L.), are capable of severe defoliation (Figure …

Physical Fitness Status In An Urban Police Force, Kenneth D. Rose, Robert J. Robertson, Ford M. Royer
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Cardiovascular fitness levels were determined for eight urban police officers by maximal treadmill stress testing and pulmonary evaluation. Average age, height, and weight characteristics were 33.1 years, 182.9 cm and 101.6 kg respectively. Measurements of heart rate and blood pressure were obtained for the pre-exercise, exercise, and post-exercise periods. Lactic acid levels were determined at pre-exercise and again at post-exercise. Maximal aerobic power and pulmonary volumes and mechanics were also determined. Average maximal aerobic power and terminal heart rate for the treadmill test were 28.51 ml/kg/min and 186.5 BPM respectively. Four of the police officers were found to be in …

Palmityl Coenzyme A Inhibition Of Fatty Acid Synthesis, Herman Knoche, Theodore W. Esders, Kirston Koths, Konrad Bloch
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The effects of acyl-CoA derivatives (C8 to C20) on the activity
of the fatty acid synthetases from yeast and Corynebacterium
diphtheriae have been examined. Both enzyme
systems are inhibited by the longer chain acyl thioesters
(C16 to C20) and protected against this inhibition by bovine
serum albumin (BSA). Identical relief from acyl-CoA inhibition
is provided by the 6-0-methylglucose-containing
lipopolysaccharide (MGLP), from Mycobacterium phlei. It
is shown that MGLP forms a stable complex with palmitylCoA.
This interaction accounts for the BSA-like effects of
the polysaccharide. BSA and MGLP have two further effects
on the fatty …

Date Of Planting Studies Of Winter Wheat And Winter Barley In Relation To Root And Crown Rot Grain Yields And Quality, C. R. Fenster, M. G. Boosalis, J. L. Weihing
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This study was undertaken to determine the nature of root and crown rot of wheat and to ascertain the proper time to plant winter wheat so as to conserve moisture, minimize root and crown rot and thereby maximize yield. Studies conducted for 15 years at several locations in western Nebraska reveal that planting date is a significant factor for higher yields, particularly in certain years.

Residential Environment Studies Relevant For Research Programs. An Annotated Bibliography. Economic, Aesthetic And Environmental Aspects Of Family Housing, Florence S. Walker
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
At the time NCR-54 Committee was activated in 1966, the membership was charged with recommending new directions for housing research by home economists and others associated with Agricultural Experiment Stations. Basic to this charge, the committee determined to compile a list of housing research publications which had had an impact on the teaching and research responsibilities as perceived by the committee members. The compilation took the form of abstracts of research on selected aspects of housing: i.e., design and aesthetic, physical-physiological and socioeconomic, as well as influential general studies.
