Studies On The Respiratory System Of The Poky Strain Of Neurospora, Alfred Tissieres, Herschel Mitchell, Francis A. Haskins
Studies On The Respiratory System Of The Poky Strain Of Neurospora, Alfred Tissieres, Herschel Mitchell, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
It was shown recently that the poky strain of Neurospora accumulates large amounts of cytochrome c, but is deficient in cytochromes a and b and thus in cytochrome oxidase and succinic acid oxidase activities (1). These findings, which suggest that respiration in poky does not utilize the cytochrome system, led to a study of the respiratory system of poky compared with that of wild type. The experiments reported here are concerned with the effects of the inhibitors cyanide and azide on the respiration of intact mycelium of poky and wild type, the oxygen uptake of cell-free extracts in the …

United States Department of Energy: Publications
Although there are some data in the literature for the solubility of uranyl nitrate in water, the discrepancy of these data indicated the necessity for a check on the measurements. We have measured the solubility from the incongruent melting point of the hexahydrate at about 60° to the melting point of the dihydrate at 184°. Our results show a lower solubility than that given in most of the earlier data and also indicate an incongruent melting point for the trihydrate rather than the congruent point inferred in some of the previous work. The system is thermally stable up to the …

Effects Of Weather, Sanitation And Chlorinated Chemical Residues On House And Stable Fly Populations On Nebraska Farms, Martin H. Muma, Ephriam Hixson
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Since L. O. Howard's (1906) early report on house flies many entomologists have conducted research on these insects. Their reports range from notes on the hibernation of house flies, Musca domestica L., to lengthy papers on the biology and control of house flies and stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.). Early control studies stressed the importance of sanitatioll, screening and the use of mist type contact insecticides. These standard control measures have not, however, received much attention in the United States since Wiesmann (1943) reported on the pro-longed effectiveness of a new insecticide "Gesarol." Scores of other workers have also published …

Microbiology Of Soil, Nathan Wakefield
Microbiology Of Soil, Nathan Wakefield
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The discovery that certain microorganisms isolated from soil could produce antibiotics when grown in pure cultures in the lab oratory has served to focus attention as never before on the subject of soil microbiology. The main emphasis, however, is on problems entirely unrelated to the processes which go on in the soil. The fact that an organism was isolated from soil and then used in medicine, fermentations, or some such way, does not bring such work in the actual field of soil microbiology. Practically all except the more fastidious animal and plant pathogens can be found in the soil at …

Riboflavin Production By Molds, George L. Peltier, Raymond Borchers
Riboflavin Production By Molds, George L. Peltier, Raymond Borchers
Papers in Microbiology
Very little information is at hand regarding the ability of molds to synthesize riboflavin. Few citations pertaining directly to riboflavin production by true molds are available.2 Pontovich (1943) found as much as 2 mg riboflavin per g of Aspergillus flavus mycelium. Tanner et at. (1945) determined the quantity of riboflavin in the submerged fermentation media of Penicillium chrysogenum. The highest value found was 1. 36 mg per ml. The primary purpose of this study was to screen several hundred isolates, recently obtained from soil, crop residues, and composts, for their ability to produce riboflavin on a wheat bran substrate.

Studies On The Validity Of Swine Erysipelas Culture-Vaccines, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney, I. C. Blore
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
In countries where vaccination against swine erysipelas has been practiced during the last half century, there is a consensus among veterinarians that the best results are obtained when the live culture-vaccine is not only fresh and highly virulent but is endowed also with a good capacity for growth on artificial culture media. Apparently avirulent culture-vaccines are apt to engender only a transitory immunity or fail altogether. The problem presented by undesirable culture-vaccines was deemed to be of such importance to the swine industry that this Station undertook a series of experiments, to determine what influences might be accountable for the …

Sources Of Amylase-Producing Bacteria, George L. Peltier, L.D. Beckord
Papers in Microbiology
In the search for bacteria possessing high amylolytic activity, some thousand or more isolates were screened on soluble starch agar and the extent of their activities determined qualitatively by the loss of medium response to Lugol's iodine solution. The selected isolates were then grown on a liquid wheat bran medium and the resulting starch-dextrinizing activity measured quantitatively. No attempt was made to determine the properties of the various amylases. The primary purpose of this report is to point out the original sources from which the isolates were made and to correlate the nature of the substrates with the extent of …

Charcoal Rot Of Corn And Sorghum, J. E. Livingston
Charcoal Rot Of Corn And Sorghum, J. E. Livingston
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
In Nebraska, the charcoal rot caused considerable damage to the 1940 grain sorghum crop in the south central counties, and the following year it caused serious lodging and reduction of yield in both corn and sorghum in all sections of the state. Field observations indicated that some varieties of sorghum were damaged less than others; thus it appeared desirable to test thoroughly all varieties to determine whether any were sufficiently resistant to be recommended for field planting or to be used in a breeding program. It seemed desirable to study the influence of soil environment on infection and the development …

Controlling The Ph Of Cultures Of Penicillium Notatum Through Its Carbon And Nitrogen Nutrition, Albert E. Dimond, George L. Peltier
Controlling The Ph Of Cultures Of Penicillium Notatum Through Its Carbon And Nitrogen Nutrition, Albert E. Dimond, George L. Peltier
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
A survey of published material reveals relatively little information concerning the nutritional physiology of Penicillium notatum Westl. on synthetic media. Metabolism studies of P. notatum on various media have appeared to be incidental to the more pressing problem of producing penicillin quickly and in quantity. Fleming (1929) originally used a nutrient broth non-synthetic in nature. The Oxford group (Abraham et al., 1941) then adopted a modification of the so-called Czapek-Dox synthetic medium which supplies nitrogen as sodium nitrate and glucose as carbohydrate. Hobby, Meyer, and Chaffee (1942) suggested that brown sugar be substituted for glucose in this nutrient, with …
Corona Discharge From Antenna Wire: A First Partial Report, Robert Katz
Corona Discharge From Antenna Wire: A First Partial Report, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
Purpose: 1. To examine the conditions for corona at the surface of a wire. This report is a theoretical discussion. No test procedure was used.
Conclusions:
1. Calculation of the gradient at the surface of the fixed-wire liaison antenna (bare copperweld, .040" diameter) on the B-17 airplane indicates that it is of the order of 200 times the gradient measured at the top generating voltmeter.
2. Further work will be done by the Special Devices Branch in an attempt to determine the conditions under which insulated wire goes into corona.

Studies On Restaurant Sanitation And The Effect Of Sodium Azide On The Physiology Of Streptococcus Salivarius, Kenneth D. Rose
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
Whether restaurant eating utensils serve as vectors in the transmission of respiratory and related diseases is still a matter for question, in spite of the overwhelming evidence in support of this contention. This is due to largely to the lack of epidemiological evidence, the tracing of an outbreak of a disease directly and unquestionably to contaminated eating utensils. The very nature of the vectors concerned obviates any possibility of obtaining this epidemiological evidence, since the contaminating agent exists as such only momentarily at the best. This research problem was undertaken with the hope that a technique designed to demonstrate the appearance of …

Alfalfa Breeding, H. M. Tysdal, T. A. Kiesselbach, H. M. Westover
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Interest in the principles of alfalfa breeding has increased greatly with the growing "forage consciousness" of the country at large and the more specific interest developed through cooperation in the Alfalfa Improvement Conference. As is true of many other forage crops, information on the breeding behavior of alfalfa is meager. During the past few years, however, the genetics and principles of reproduction of this crop have come to be better understood and it is the purpose of this paper to bring together the available information pertaining to the improvement of alfalfa and to add certain suggestions with respect to future …

Swine Erysipelas. Revised Edition Of Research Bulletin 84, L. Van Es, C. B. Mcgrath
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Because of the more or less frequent occurrence of swine erysipelas on Nebraska farms it seemed proper that information on this subject be made available in the form of a Station publication, especially written to serve as a reference for veterinarians, who naturally are first appealed to when an as yet relatively strange disease appears among a herd of swine. Hence the text is written in a technical form for the sake of precision. In the preparation of the text the literature of countries in which for many years the disease has constituted a permanent problem has been freely consulted. …
