Why The Film Was Banned And Its Significance During The Colonial Era And Aftermath, Sawel Awuni Mar 2026

Why The Film Was Banned And Its Significance During The Colonial Era And Aftermath, Sawel Awuni

Department of French Studies Graduate Student Association Conference

This paper examines the usefulness of film according to the figure widely known as the father of African cinema, Ousmane Sembène. In 2008, Annett Busch and Max Annas published an edited volume of Sembène’s interviews titled Ousmane Sembène: Interviews, which compiles a wide range of conversations conducted with him during his lifetime. This compilation offers insights into his films and the stories surrounding each production. Drawing on this collection, this presentation aims to highlight the significance of film during the twentieth century, the reasons why certain films were banned, and what Sembène believed should be the purpose of filmmaking.

Kennelly V. Mid Coast And The Maine Law Court's Erroneous Ruling On The Discoverability Of Redacted Patient Info, John Blegen Mar 2026

Kennelly V. Mid Coast And The Maine Law Court's Erroneous Ruling On The Discoverability Of Redacted Patient Info, John Blegen

Student Journal of Information Privacy Law

This paper examines a recent Maine Law Court decision, Kennelly v. Mid Coast, in which the Law Court held that the medical records of individuals not involved in a lawsuit, even when redacted of identifying materials, are protected from discovery orders in a malpractice lawsuit, where the records would be used to demonstrate a standard of care to be expected of the administering doctor. It then examines the privacy interests individuals retain in their redacted healthcare records more broadly, in part to emphasize the large variety of contexts in which this issue can come up, and also to show how …

Can Ai Fix Anti-Money Laundering? The Case For Federated Intelligence In Financial Crime Prevention, Matthias Connelly Mar 2026

Can Ai Fix Anti-Money Laundering? The Case For Federated Intelligence In Financial Crime Prevention, Matthias Connelly

Student Journal of Information Privacy Law

The global anti-money laundering (AML) regime is failing. Trillions of dollars are laundered each year, yet governments detect only a fraction of that activity, even as financial institutions spend hundreds of billions on compliance. In the United States, AML regulation has evolved from a retrospective, prosecution-oriented framework into an expansive, preventative regime that measures inputs rather than enforcement outcomes. Although artificial intelligence has demonstrated potential to improve detection, firm-siloed AI systems introduce substantial financial, technological, and systemic risks, including prohibitive development costs, data- privacy constraints, and market concentration among third-party service providers. This Article argues that federated learning offers a …

Friend Or Tether: How Regulation Can Cut The Strings Of Manipulative Chatbots, Steve Hammerton Mar 2026

Friend Or Tether: How Regulation Can Cut The Strings Of Manipulative Chatbots, Steve Hammerton

Student Journal of Information Privacy Law

In the time since AI chatbots and other LLMs became widely available to the public, there has been a pattern of deaths linked to interactions with this technology. While it was settled in early 2026, Garcia v. Character Technologies serves as a case study of how AI chatbots can negatively prey on vulnerable groups in the absence of interventions to mitigate harmful AI behaviors and tragic human outcomes. There is not a singular approach to regulating the harmful effects of predatory chatbots; however, this paper advocates for a harms-based regime influenced by protections in human-subject research. In a sense, AI …

People’S Republic Of China Stratagems And Surprise Attacks—Implications For The Defense Of Taiwan, Ian Easton

Naval War College Review

As the People’s Republic of China continues to amass military forces across the strait from Taiwan, Chinese military doctrine holds the keys to preparing for potential conflict. Elements of surprise and deception, akin to those used by Russia during the invasion of Ukraine, may drive strategy and preparation for a potential invasion of Taiwan.

Using Paired Queer Literature To Foster Critical Literacy And Intersectionality, Ferial Pearson, Jennifer L. Lemke Mar 2026

Using Paired Queer Literature To Foster Critical Literacy And Intersectionality, Ferial Pearson, Jennifer L. Lemke

Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education

This article explores the use of paired queer literature as a tool for fostering critical literacy and intersectional understanding in K–12 educational settings. Grounded in the belief that literature should serve as both a mirror and a window for students (Bishop, 1990), the paper argues for the inclusion of LGBTQ+ narratives to challenge dominant heteronormative frameworks that pervade U.S. school culture. By pairing texts that reflect diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and intersecting social identities, educators can cultivate inclusive classrooms that affirm all students’ experiences. The paper provides a framework for selecting high-quality, developmentally appropriate LGBTQ+ texts across grade levels …

Applying Means–End Chain Theory To Online Buying And Understanding Consumers' Motivation To Disclose Private Information, Brikena Berisha, Maja Konečnik Ruzzier Mar 2026

Applying Means–End Chain Theory To Online Buying And Understanding Consumers' Motivation To Disclose Private Information, Brikena Berisha, Maja Konečnik Ruzzier

Economic and Business Review

The purpose of this study is to define and understand the motives that influence consumers’ decisions to disclose personal data online. Using means–end chain theory as the main theoretical framework, 10 in-depth interviews conducted through soft laddering revealed how both utilitarian and hedonic motivations jointly shape disclosure behavior. The findings show that these motivations interact, demonstrating that data disclosure is driven not only by functional considerations but also by emotional and experiential factors embedded in consumers’ value systems. The study concludes that motivation plays a central and multifaceted role in online data disclosure decisions.

Sustainability And Stability: Esg–Credit Risk Dynamics In Eu Banks, Jan Porenta, Iza Matko, Riste Ichev

Economic and Business Review

This study examines the relationship between bank-specific environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance and credit risk in the European Union (EU), focusing on differences between euro area (EA) and non-EA banks, as well as developed versus emerging EU markets. Using panel data for 87 EU banks from 2014–2023 and static fixed-effects models, credit risk is measured via ratios of nonperforming loans to loans, assets, and equity, while ESG is assessed using both ESG and ESG combined scores. Results show a statistically significant negative association between ESG performance and credit risk for the full sample, EA banks, and banks in developed …

Recommendation Quality Evaluation Artificial Intelligence Agent, Tamojit Chatterjee, Kanishk Mishra, Sundaramoorthy Murugesan, Ankur Kapoor

Defensive Publications Series

The manual inspection and evaluation of the performance of artificial intelligence (AI) agents in complex computer systems may be challenging, especially in computer systems that include recommendation engines and ranking models. The manual inspection and evaluation of the performance of the AI agents in complex computer systems may be a tedious, subjective, and error-prone process. Determining the specific contributions of a multitude of individual signals to a final rank may be difficult when using human inspection, and in addition or in the alternative, performance drift from specific goals may go unnoticed.

This disclosed technology implements a recommendation quality evaluation artificial …

Predictive Remediation By Analyzing Influence-Radius Across Generative Workspace Boards, Vishal S Desai, Robert Barton Mar 2026

Predictive Remediation By Analyzing Influence-Radius Across Generative Workspace Boards, Vishal S Desai, Robert Barton

Defensive Publications Series

Existing network troubleshooting tools typically remediate network issues in a reactive and localized manner, thus generating solutions that lack awareness of other active or historical sessions across the same network.  As a result, multiple users often investigate identical or derivative problems, which leads to inefficient use of operational and computational resources.  To address these challenges, the techniques presented herein implement an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven network troubleshooting system configured to perform context correlation, influence-radius detection, and automatic context-aware predictive remediation with proactive user notifications.

Evaluating The Impact Of Self-Care Strategies Incorporated Into Undergraduate And Graduate Nursing Curricula: A Systematic Review, Roseanne Moody Fairchild, Salena Tully

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background/Significance: Self-care is defined as a person’s capacity to partake in preventative measures promoting emotional, physical, and spiritual health to maintain one’s well-being. Registered nurses represent a majority of the healthcare workforce, and a 2017 report by American Nurses' Association found nurses have elevated risk for: a) being overweight, b) lacking adequate rest and sleep and, c) experiencing high levels of stress. As effects of the Covid-19 pandemic rapidly spread, substantial proportions of nurses reported heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and burnout. Impact of the pandemic has brought forth increased awareness regarding the need to encourage self-care practices among nurses …

Higher Learning Research Communications

The theory-practice and practice-theory relationship is a fundamental axis in the learning of trainee teachers; therefore, the practicum must constitute the key element in their university training. The research described in this paper, in which students and teachers from the bachelor’s degrees in early childhood education and primary education programs at the University of Huelva in Spain have participated, has been carried out through a descriptive and interpretative qualitative study focused on case studies. This study highlights the need for greater communication between the work experience centers and the university and between the professionals who tutor the work experience period. …

Do Emotions Matter In Ai? The Mediating Role Of Emotional Response Between Perceived Risk And Trust, Areej Babiker, Mohamed Basel Almourad, Sameha Alshakhsi, Magnus Liebherr, Raian Ali Mar 2026

Do Emotions Matter In Ai? The Mediating Role Of Emotional Response Between Perceived Risk And Trust, Areej Babiker, Mohamed Basel Almourad, Sameha Alshakhsi, Magnus Liebherr, Raian Ali

All Works

Research shows that trust in AI is influenced by socio-ethical considerations, technical features of AI systems, and user characteristics. Yet, the mediating role of emotional response between perceived risk and trust remains underexplored, particularly across different AI contexts. This cross-sectional vignette experiment design aims to explore the relationship between users' perceived potential risk, emotional response, and trust in AI, and examine how these relationships vary across different levels of automation and criticality. An online survey included a total of 639 participants including 316 from the UK and 323 from Arab Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Participants rated their perceived risk, …
