Physics, Chapter 20: Wave Motion, Henry Semat, Robert Katz Jan 1958

Physics, Chapter 20: Wave Motion, Henry Semat, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Wave motion is an important method of transferring energy from one place to another without involving the actual transfer of matter. When a pebble is dropped into a still pool, some of the kinetic energy of the pebble is used to generate the ripples which spread out in all directions over the surface of the pool. When the ripples pass by a floating object, such as a bit of cork, the cork bobs up and down, having acquired its kinetic energy of vibration from the ripple system. The ripples thus serve to deliver some of the energy of the pebble …

Physics, Chapter 41: Polarized Light, Henry Semat, Robert Katz Jan 1958

Physics, Chapter 41: Polarized Light, Henry Semat, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

The phenomena of interference and diffraction show that light is propagated as a wave motion, but they do not show whether light is a longitudinal wave or a transverse wave. The fact that the velocity of light is the same as the velocity of radio waves and the radiation of visible light from accelerated electrons, as in a betatron, indicates that light is an electromagnetic wave. We recall from Section 20-9 that a wave can be shown to be transverse if a device can be found which will prevent passage of the wave in one orientation and will allow the …

Physics, Chapter 40: Light As A Wave Motion, Henry Semat, Robert Katz Jan 1958

Physics, Chapter 40: Light As A Wave Motion, Henry Semat, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Let us recount some of the characteristics of the motion of particles and the propagation of waves, with a view toward analyzing the behavior of light. In accordance with Newton's first law, a particle moves in a straight-line path in the absence of external forces. Thus we might infer, as Newton suggested, that light is composed of particles, and that, in a continuous medium, there is no deflecting force on the light particles. At the interface between two media, light may be propagated in a straight line parallel to the interface. Thus even at an interface there is no force …

Physics, Chapter 38: Mirrors And Lenses, Henry Semat, Robert Katz Jan 1958

Physics, Chapter 38: Mirrors And Lenses, Henry Semat, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

A spherical mirror consists of a small section of the surface of a sphere with one side of the surface covered with a polished reflecting material, usually silver or aluminum. If the outside, or convex surface, is silvered, we have a convex mirror; if the inside, or concave surface, is silvered, we have a concave mirror, as shown in Figure 38-1. Most mirrors used commercially are made of glass, with the rear surface silvered and then coated with a layer of paint or lacquer for protection. Mirrors for astronomical telescopes (')f other accurate scientific work are provided with a reflective …

It includes terms from many fields including physical geography, geology, hydrography, galciology, botany, and pedology. This is an alphabetic list of terms keyed to three appendices. The appendices are line drawings illustrating various sorts of terrain features. Where a term is shown on one of the appendices the number of the appendix and …

The Poetic Style Erich Kastner, John Winkelman May 1957

The Poetic Style Erich Kastner, John Winkelman

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The existing studies of the poetry of Erich Kiistner deal almost exclusively with aspects of its content, whether in an ideational or a concrete sense, and have at best only peripheral reference to the esthetic realization of this content. That is, these studies consider the poems primarily in their function as means of communication or even as unwitting autobiography, and in effect ignore the poems in order to "penetrate" to that which they communicate or reveal.

Yet the relation of external and internal in any esthetic object is just the reverse: one would have to penetrate past that which the …

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxxi. Observations On The Propagation Of The Larval Echinococcus Multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, In Vitro, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia Jentoft Feb 1957

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxxi. Observations On The Propagation Of The Larval Echinococcus Multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, In Vitro, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia Jentoft

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Larval reproduction in Echinococcus multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, takes place through the proliferation of exogenous secondary vesicles (Rausch, 1954). In some species of host this process appears to be continual, extending over a long period of time with little tendency for self-limitation. Consequently, the growth characteristics of this larval cestode are such that it would seem well suited to culture in vitro.

Gyrodactylus Eucaliae N. Sp. (Trematoda: Monogenea) From The Brook Stickleback, Eucalia Inconstans*, Glenn L. Hoffman, Francis M. Ikezaki

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

A new species of Gyrodactylus was observed on the skin, gills, and fins of the brook stickleback from the English Coulee, Grand Forks, North Dakota during the summers of 1953-1955. Host-specificity is usually striking in the monogenetic trematodes and since this parasite was not observed on any other species of fish from this body of water or the nearby Turtle River, it was studied in detail and is here described as a new species, G. eucaliae.

The Coexistence Of Pathogens And Pseudomonads In Soluble Oil Emulsions, R. Samuel-Maharajah, Hilliard Pivnik, W.E. Engelhard, Sheila Templeton Jun 1956

The Coexistence Of Pathogens And Pseudomonads In Soluble Oil Emulsions, R. Samuel-Maharajah, Hilliard Pivnik, W.E. Engelhard, Sheila Templeton

Papers in Microbiology

This investigation is concerned primarily with the growth and virulence of pathogenic bacteria introduced into soluble oil emulsions. The soluble oils are petroleum or fatty oils emulsified with soaps of petroleum sulfonic acids, naphthenic acids, fatty acids, rosin, or tall oil. When mixed with water, the soluble oils form stable oil-in-water emulsions and, as such, are used in machine shops as coolants and lubricants in the cutting and grinding of metals. Unfortunately, they serve as excellent substrates for the growth of bacteria.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

False smut of buffalograss, Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm., caused by Cercospora seminalis Ell. & Ev. is a disease that destroys the unfertilized ovary. The disease was first reported by J. B. Ellis and B. M. Everhart in 1888. They gave only a brief description of the disease and named the causal fungus Cercospora seminalis. There are no etiological studies of false smut recorded in the literature. The origin of the term "false smut" is unknown to the author, but it so descriptively fits the general appearances of the disease that one readily understands its usage. The following studies were …

Field Manual Fm 55-8, Transportation Intelligence, October 1956, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

This is a manual describing the transportation intelligence activities of the Army in the mid-1950s. A more accurate title would be “Transportation Corps Intelligence” since the Army technical services were responsible for intelligence related to their field of expertise in the 1950s.

The modern US Army vision of the technical intelligence developed during World War II. Shortly before World War II, Army Technical Services had been instructed to set up intelligence sections in the offices of their chiefs. The technical services were bureaus which supplied weapons, equipment, and services to the Army, managed the careers of officers in a particular …

Pustule Formation By Lactobacilli On Fermented Vegetables, T.L. Thompson, W.E. Engelhard, Hilliard Pivnik May 1955

Pustule Formation By Lactobacilli On Fermented Vegetables, T.L. Thompson, W.E. Engelhard, Hilliard Pivnik

Papers in Microbiology

Genuine dill pickles are the product resulting from the fermentation, predominantly lactic, of cucumbers immersed in a brine containing 3 to 4 per cent salt. The brine also contains dill weed and may contain spices and garlic or extracts of their essential oils. Genuine dill tomatoes are manufactured from green tomatoes by a fermentation similar to that used for pickles (Fabian and Wadsworth, 1944).
Lactobacillus plantarum is commonly associated with the fermentation of pickles (Pederson, 1936), although other lactobacilli and some yeasts undoubtedly play a role. A survery of the literature failed to uncover any reports concerning the microbial flora …

The Production Of 2, 3-Butanediol By Fermentation Of Sugar Beet Molasses, Keith B. Mccall, Carl E. Georgi

Papers in Microbiology

The production of 2,3-butanediol from natural materials by fermentation offers a practical and economical method for obtaining appreciable quantities of this important chemical. A variety of substrates have been used satisfactorily such as wood hydrolyzates (Perlman,1944), wheat (Katznelson, 1944.; Ledingham et al., 1945; Ward et al., 1945) and corn (Ward et al., 1945). The use of several grades of beet molasses prepared from home-grown beets has been reported by British (Freeman and Morrison, 1947) and Canadian workers (Anastassiadis and Wheat, 1953). Excellent yields were obtained which compared favorably with those resulting from the use of pure sucrose.

Although the characteristics …

Secretion Of Amylase By Rumex Virus Tumors In Vitro, L. G. Nickell, M. K. Brakke Jan 1954

Secretion Of Amylase By Rumex Virus Tumors In Vitro, L. G. Nickell, M. K. Brakke

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The secretion of extracellular enzymes by intact cells of higher plants apparently is a rare occurrence. One example of it is the secretion of an extra, cellular amylase by the tissue of a virus-induced tumor from the root of Rumex wetosa L. An amylase is secreted in sufficient quantities by this tissue to enable it to grow as well in vitro on a starch-containing medium as on one containing sucrose.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xiii. Disease In The Sea Otter, With Special Reference To Helminth Parasites, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

During the spring of 1951, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service undertook the removal of sea otter, Enhydra lutris (L)., from the Aleutian Island of Amchitka, for the purpose of restocking range from which the animals have long been exterminated. The decision to undertake this activity was influenced by the nature of military operations planned for the island later the same year. The capture and removal of the otter were under the supervision of Mr. Robert D. Jones, Biologist, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Heavy losses among the animals shortly after capture made the venture unsuccessful. Many deaths …
