Fertilizing Capacity And Morphology Of Fowl And Turkey Spermatozoa In Hypotonic Extender, M. R. Bakst
Fertilizing Capacity And Morphology Of Fowl And Turkey Spermatozoa In Hypotonic Extender, M. R. Bakst
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The effects of graduated increments of hypotonic Beltsville Poultry Semen Extender (BPSE) on fowl and turkey sperm morphology, motility, percentage dead
and fertility were examined. The morphology of fowl and turkey spermatozoa was
adversely affected by decreases in BPSE osmolarity; a reduction of osmolarity of
BPSE to below 200 and 140 mosmol adversely affected the fertility of fowl and
turkey spermatozoa, respectively. The addition of Ficoll to the extender allowed
direct observation of the effects of hypotonic BPSE on the sperm plasmalemma.
Plasmalemmal swelling, due to the uptake of water, was noted initially at the
midpiece. Such plasmalemmal swelling may …
Inhibition Of Biological Activity Of Multiplication-Stimulating Activity By Binding To Its Carrier Protein, Daniel J. Knauer, Gary L. Smith
Inhibition Of Biological Activity Of Multiplication-Stimulating Activity By Binding To Its Carrier Protein, Daniel J. Knauer, Gary L. Smith
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Multiplication-stimulating activity (MSA) produced by Buffalo rat liver cells (BRL-3A) in culture is related to the somatomedin family of growth regulatory polypeptides. MSA will stimulate glucose transport and DNA synthesis in normal chicken embryo fibroblasts (CIEF) at concentrations of 10-200 ng/ml. MSA found in BRL-3A-conditioned medium, like the somatomedins in serum, does not exist as the free hormone but is' bound to a specific high molecular weight carrier protein. In this report we demonstrate that purified MSA carrier protein (MCP) inhibits the biological activity of MSA on CEF as measured by the stimulation of glucose transport and DNA synthesis. In …

Three new species of Goezia from fishes in North America are described and supplemental data for G. minuta and several unidentified adults and larvae are presented. Males, especially their caudal papillae, are necessary to identify most species. For the new species, G. pelagia sp. n. from Rachycentron canadum and Chaetodipterus faber in the northern Gulf of Mexico possesses 12- 19 preanal, two para-anal, and four postanal pairs of papillae; G. kliksi sp. n. from Pogonias cromis in Lake Borgne, Louisiana, has 10-16 preanal, two para-anal, and five postanal pairs of papillae, and G. sinamora sp. n. from Tilapia aurea, …
Androgen Secretion And Characteristics Of Testicular Hcg Binding In Cryptorchid Rats, B. D. Schanbacher
Androgen Secretion And Characteristics Of Testicular Hcg Binding In Cryptorchid Rats, B. D. Schanbacher
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Response of the cryptorchid testis to gonadotrophic stimulation was assessed by comparison of the androgen production capability in vivo and in vitro with that of the normal scrotal testis. Serum androgen concentrations in cryptorchid rats were similar to those in normal rats, and the incremental increase 60 min after 50 i.u. hCG (i.v.) was about 7-fold for both groups. Basal and hCG-stimulated androgen production in vitro was higher for abdominal testes (557 and 3286 ng/pair) than for scrotal tests (157 and 504 ng/pair). Specific binding of hCG by testicular homogenates was slightly higher (P < 0·05)for cryptorchid testes when expressed per unit weight, but Scatchard analysis indicated that although hCG binding affinities did not differ (Ka = 2×1010 M-1), hCG binding …

Solving Urban Problems Associated With Small Animals, Sharon Whitten
Solving Urban Problems Associated With Small Animals, Sharon Whitten
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Small animals have been drawn into the urban setting, and as a consequence of their contact with man their populations are growing. The result of this growth is damage to man's property. We must take steps to reduce damage caused by wildlife in urban areas.

Using Extension Methodology In Prairie Dog Management, Lloyd K. Cheatheam
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
At the turn of the century, Texas' 'black-tailed prairie dog was probably the State's most abundant wildlife species. Bailey estimated the population at 800,000,000 animals in 1905. He also described a single colony that was 100 miles wide and 250 miles long, from San Angelo, Texas to Clarendon, Texas. During this period, other authors described riding by horseback for several days through a single colony. Settlers of this area, wishing to raise cattle, had to first control the prairie dog. My good friend, G.IJ. "Shorty" Kennedy, a retired ranch foreman and an octgenarian, described these historical control methods to me.

How Wildlife Damge Control Personnel Can Cope With The Gas Shortage And Reduced Budgets, Yet Still Meet The Needs Of The Public, Volney W. Howard Jr.
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
As I see the situation, we are really addressing a two-sided issue -- one involves actual field personnel, such as Animal Damage Control (ADC), and the other contains those involved in extension. Some potential solutions which may be beneficial for one group may not be applicable to the problems encountered by the other. ADC Personnel. The field personnel are faced with increased fuel costs and static or decreased travel budgets. In addition, there is rumor of a 10 to 15% mandatory decrease in gasoline consumption on a per-month-basis by ADC employees in New Mexico. I assume that ADC personnel in …
Program Planning For Extension Wildlife Damge Control - Bird Damage, Ron J. Johnson
Program Planning For Extension Wildlife Damge Control - Bird Damage, Ron J. Johnson
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Bird damage problems occur throughout the Great Plains States, and these problems often confront extension personnel. Knowledge of what problems occur in the various states and how they are handled may help us better pool efforts toward finding solutions. Shared information may also show patterns that exist or new problems emerging that might require increased attention in the future.

Vertebrate Animal Damage Control: Summary Of Panel Discussion And Committee Review, Dale A. Wade
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
It is clearly evident that the program planning committee for this national workshop recognized vertebrate animal damage and its control as one of the most difficult problems with which we deal in resource management. Perhaps no other topic is more controversial since it encompasses all of the biological, social, economic and political factors, with emotion and opinions frequently weighed more heavily than fact.

Cyanogenesis In Indiangrass Seedlings, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, Kenneth P. Vogel
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
In a study of seedlings of 72 entries representing 39 species, 14 genera, and 2 tribes of grasses, only entries of the genus Sorghastrum were found to contain the cyanogenic glucoside, dhurrin [(S)-p-hydroxymandelonitrile β-D-glucopyranoside]. Dhurrin was found in seedlings of each of the 10 entries of indiangrass [Sorghastrum mutans (L) Nash] and the three entries of S. pellitum.
Seedlings of five indiangrass cultivars were assayed for dhurrin concentration. Levels expressed as HCN potential (HCN-p) ranged from about 900 ppm for 'Holt' to about 1,200 ppm for 'Llano' and 'Oto'.
Further studies with Oto seedlings indicated that …
Setting Up An Effective Urban Blackbird Roost Control Program, Sally S. Erdman
Setting Up An Effective Urban Blackbird Roost Control Program, Sally S. Erdman
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The City of Denton is situated 35 miles north of north-central Texas. This area is within one of the major N-S corridors for migratory birds. It is also far enough south so that winters are generally mild and open. The average rainfall of 30 inches sustains good stands of pecan and several species of oak, which serve as excellent roost sites for blackbirds. For the past several years, summering flocks of blackbirds have chosen Denton as a roosting site. Interviews with oldtimers here indicate that flocks of birds have always been around. It is only in recent years that their …

Blackbird-Starling Winter Roost Survey In Kentucky And Tennessee, 1977-78, Jon F. Heisterberg
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The existence of large winter blackbird-starling roosts has, at least in recent years, presented problems to residents of Kentucky and Tennessee. Farmers in the vicinity of large roosts have reported serious crop and feedlot losses (including transmission of livestock diseases caused by blackbirds and starlings). Aesthetic, human health, and nuisance problems are frequently associated with large roosts. To gain knowledge and understanding of the distribution and ecology of winter roosts so that more effective means of alleviating these problems can be found, the Fish and Wildlife Service periodically conducts roost surveys throughout the United States. Surveys of winter roosts, with …
Significance Of Hemolytic Activity Of Some Radiation- Resistant Micrococci In Food, Ardyce Welch, R. Burt Maxcy
Significance Of Hemolytic Activity Of Some Radiation- Resistant Micrococci In Food, Ardyce Welch, R. Burt Maxcy
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Micrococci resistant to 1 Mrad ofgamma radiation were isolated from irradiated chicken. Three isolates were hemolytic on blood agar plates and were selected for further study. Two other radiation-resistant micrococci, Micrococcus radiodurans and Micrococcus radiophilus, were included in the study because there is only a very limited amount of information regarding hemolytic activity of these organisms and their potential role of public health importance. Tests to determine hemolytic patterns, hemolytic activity of extracellular substances, leukocytic activity, presence of enzymes commonly associated with pathogenicity (coagulase, deoxyribonuclease, phosphatase), and pathogenicity for laboratory animals all suggested that the organisms would not be of …

A Pressure Injection Device For Inoculation Of Maize With Bacterial Phytopathogens, Randall R. Carlson, A. K. Vidaver, David S. Wysong, J. H. Riesselman
Biological Process Development Facility: Staff Publications
A pressure injection device (PID) was used to inoculate maize (Zea mays) with bacterial phytopathogens. The PID was evaluated for its speed, effectiveness, and precision relative to the needle-eye method of inoculation. Corynebacterium nebraskense, Erwinia stewartii, and Pseudomonas andropogonis were each used successfully as inocula to infect maize and produce symptoms typical of Goss's wilt, Stewart's wilt and bacterial stripe, respectively. Quantitative inoculation with the PID was faster and as statistically precise as using a calibrated needle-eye.
Isolation Of Radiation-Resistant Bacteria Without Exposure To Irradiation, Scott Sanders, R. Burt Maxcy
Isolation Of Radiation-Resistant Bacteria Without Exposure To Irradiation, Scott Sanders, R. Burt Maxcy
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Resistance to desiccation was utilized in the selection of highly radiation-resistant asporogenous bacteria from non-irradiated sources. A bacterial suspension in phosphate buffer was dried in a thin film at 25°C and 33% relative humidity. Storage under these conditions for 15 days or more reduced the number of radiation-sensitive bacteria. Further selection for radiation-resistant bacteria was obtained by irradiation of bacteria on velveteen in the replication process, thereby avoiding the toxic effect of irradiated media. The similarity of radiation resistance and identifying characteristics in irradiated and non-irradiated isolates should allay some concerns that highly radiation-resistant bacteria have been permanently altered by …

Agar Plate Culture Of Selected Trypanosomatidae, Amy Doran Keppel
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Summary
The study of trypanosomatid biology would benefit greatly from the acquisition of a tool for culturing such as those used in microbiology. Agar plate culture has been described several times, but until the present its potential for use in this area has been underestimated. The previous work has demonstrated that this culture method may be used to culture a wide variety of species, that these species give rise to identifiable colony phenotypes, and that these are stable regardless of the life cycle stage used to initiate the culture. It was also shown that colonies could be initiated from the …

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education
Teaching has sometimes been described as "a function of personality." Although clearly an oversimplification of a complex and difficult activity, the concept nevertheless has considerable merit; what we as teachers can do or are willing to try in the classroom and in our relationships with our colleagues, our students, and our institutions is in many ways determined by what we are as people. In a similar way, what we as individuals involved in faculty development can or are willing to do with or for faculty, administrators and students is as much a function of our personalities as of the skills …

Protection of the environment requires effective regulatory actions which are based on ssound technical and scientific information. This information must include the quantitative description and linking of pollutant sources, transport mechanisms, interactions, and resulting effects on man and his environment. Because of the complexities involved, assessment of specific pollutants in the environment requires a total systems approach which transcends the media of air, water, and land. The Environmental Monitoring and Support Laboratory-Las Vegas contributes to the formation and enhancement of a sound monitoring data base for exposure assessment through programs designed to:
