Review Of Rodeo: An Anthropologist Looks At The Wild And The Tame By Elizabeth Atwood Lawrence, John W. Bennett
Review Of Rodeo: An Anthropologist Looks At The Wild And The Tame By Elizabeth Atwood Lawrence, John W. Bennett
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Anthropologists have been slow to take up intensive fieldwork in American life, partly because their professional training has emphasized that "the exotic" is something found only in remote tribal societies, not in urbanized North America. But with the transformation of tribal cultures into developing nations, anthropologists have begun to turn to their own culture and have found it possible to see it as exotic. This book is an example of that new genre. The author has unusual equipment for the task: she was trained as a veterinarian and also as an anthropologist, and her study of rodeo grew out of …

Ca(Ii)-Calmodulin Regulation Of Fungal Dimorphism In Ceratocystis Ulmi, Ganapathy Muthukumar, Kenneth W. Nickerson
Papers in Microbiology
We have shown that Ca(II) ions, ethylene glycol-bis(β-aminoethyl ether)- N,N-tetraacetic acid, LaCl3, and six known calmodulin inhibitors shift the yeast-mycelium dimorphic potential of Ceratocystis ulmi. Our data are consistent with the conclusions that Ca(II)-calmodulin interaction is necessary for mycelial growth in C. ulmi and that the absence of this interaction leads to the yeast phase.

Conjugative Plasmid In Corynebacterium Flaccumfaciens Subsp. Oortii That Confers Resistance To Arsenite, Arsenate, And Antimony(Iii), Carol A. Hendrick, William P. Haskins, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Gene transfer systems for phytopathogenic corynebacteria have not been reported previously. In this paper we describe a conjugative 46-megadalton plasmid (pDG101) found in Corynebacterium flaccumfaciens subsp. oortii COIOI that mediates resistance to arsenite, arsenate, and antimony(III). Transfer of the plasmid from CO101 to four other strains from the C. flaccumfaciens group occurred between cells immobilized on nitrocellulose filters or on agar surfaces. Transconjugant strains expressed the same levels of metal resistance as the donor strain and were able to act as donor strains in subsequent matings. The physical presence of the plasmid was detected by agarose gel electrophoresis. Arsenite-sensitive derivatives …

Effect Of Physiological Age On Radiation Resistance Of Some Bacteria That Are Highly Radiation Resistant, Lewis Keller, R. Burt Maxcy
Effect Of Physiological Age On Radiation Resistance Of Some Bacteria That Are Highly Radiation Resistant, Lewis Keller, R. Burt Maxcy
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Physiological age-dependent variation in radiation resistance was studied for three bacteria that are highly radiation resistant: Micrococcus radiodurans, Micrococcus sp. isolate C-3, and Moraxella sp. isolate 4. Stationary-phase cultures of M. radiodurans and isolate C-3 were much more resistant to gamma radiation than were log-phase cultures. This pattern of relative resistance was reversed for isolate 4. Resistance of isolate 4 to UV light was also greater during log phase, although heat resistance and NaCl tolerance after heat stress were greater during stationary phase. Radiation-induced injury of isolate 4 compared with injury of Escherichia coli B suggested that the injury process, …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
A total of 23 strains of coryneform bacteria that cause ratoon stunting disease of sugarcane and Bermudagrass stunting disease were examined. These included 17 sugarcane strains from Florida, Louisiana, South Africa, Brazil, and Japan and six Bermudagrass strains from Florida and Taiwan. The sugarcane and Bermudagrass strains contained 2,4-diaminobutyric acid, rhamnose, and fucose in their cell walls, suggesting a relationship to some other phytopathogenic coryneform bacteria and related organisms with similar cell wall compositions. The cellular protein patterns of the sugarcane and Bermudagrass strains after polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis resembled the patterns of Corynebacterium michiganense subspecies more than the patterns of …

Toxic Characteristics Of Fluorocitrate, The Toxic Metabolite Of Compound 1080 , Peter J. Savarie
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)
This paper reviews toxicological research involving fluorocitrate, the toxic metabolite of sodium monofluoroacetate (fluoroacetate), which is the active ingredient in the pesticide Compound 1080. Many toxicological studies have been done with fluoroacetate and the results obtained are actually due to the fluorocitrate because it has been definitely proved that, from a biochemical perspective, fluoroacetate is not toxic but fluorocitrate is. The classical explanation of the toxic action of fluorocitrate is that it inhibits the enzyme aconitase in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Deactivation of aconitase results in decreased energy production by cells and ultimately death of the organism. However, the more …

A Weather-Resistant Tracking Board, D.S. Shepherd, J.H. Greaves
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)
The main practical limitation of tracking boards for the study of small mammals is that the sensitive surface is very vulnerable to damage by rain or dew. A tracking board is described that is easily prepared for use in the field, is resistant to rain and running water, and is sensitive enough to record the footprints of mice. The literature on tracking board techniques is reviewed briefly.

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage
Why do we have tests? What useful purposes do they serve? How can test results be used to make decisions? How can a test be proved to provide accurate and usable information? Questions such as these have been posed recently by a concerned public who have become more aware of and concerned about testing, test quality, and appropriate test usage. Their questions are challenging, legitimate queries that can and should be addressed by members of the measurement community .
Some of the questions being asked by the public are value laden, providing topics for many thoughtful but heated debates. For …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage
The field of measurement can be conceptualized as having three different but interrelated aspects. First of all, it is a science or a body of knowledge concerned with the development of theory and methodology and with the identification and confirmation of generalizations governing interrelationships among variables appropriate to its content. Measurement theory and its application to measurement problems are important contributors here. Second, it is an applied science or technology concerned with the development of products that represent a useful application of such a science or body of knowledge. For the field of measurement, test development and validation are important …

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage
What a happy occasion it is to celebrate, as we do in this volume, the establishment of a national Buros Institute of Mental Measurements, located on the campus of the University of Nebraska, in Lincoln. What a culmination of many plans, hopes, and dreams! On such an occasion, we can take a quiet pride in our profession and in the life and accomplishments of one of our colleagues and friends, Oscar Krisen Buros, who with Luella Buros is leaving to us, and our posterity, an institution of integrity to foster the science and practice of testing.
How new all this …

Aeromonas Hydrophila And Motile Aeromonad Septicemias Of Fish, Rocco C. Cipriano, G. L. Bullock, S. W. Pyle
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Aeromonas hydrophila and other motile aeromonads are among the most common bacteria in freshwater habitats throughout the world, and are frequently associated with severe disease among cultured and feral fishes. Determinations of the etiology of diseases involving aeromonad infections has been complicated by the genetic, biochemical, and antigenic heterogeneity of members of this group. Consequently, motile aeromonads consist of a complex of disease organisms that are associated with bacterial hemorrhagic septicemias in fishes. From descriptions of fish diseases in the early scientific literature, Otte (1963) speculated that septicemic infections in fish caused by motile aeromonads were common throughout Europe during …
Low-Rank Coal: Its Present And Future Role In The United States, Everett A. Sondreal, George A. Wiltsee
Low-Rank Coal: Its Present And Future Role In The United States, Everett A. Sondreal, George A. Wiltsee
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Low-rank coals-lignite and subbituminous coal-are those that have been subjected to the least metamorphic change during the coal-forming process. As such, they retain greater fractions of moisture and volatile matter and contain less fixed carbon than the high-rank coals-bituminous and anthracite. The primary measure used to classify the lower ranks of coal is the heating value. Lignite is defined by the American Society for Testing and Materials (standard D-388) as coal with a heating value less than 8300 Btujlb, on a moist, mineral-matter-free basis (m,mmf). Subbituminous coal ranges in heating value from 8300 to 11,500 Btujlb (m,mmf). Bituminous coal and …

The Outlook For U.S. Agriculture And Agribusiness, Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
Not since the 1930s have I been as concerned for the short term future of American agriculture as I am now. Last year's net farm income is estimated at only about $15.5 billion. In the aggregate, and in real term, that is the lowest it has been in decades. Fortunately, on a per capita or per farm basis the numbers are less depressing and, fortunately, they will begin to trend upward again in 1984. But it looks as if export tonnages will decline for the fourth year in a row, and farm land values may also decline for the fourth …

Effect Of Membrane Filtration Of Antimalarial Drug Solutions On In Vitro Activity Against Plasmodium Falciparum, J. Kevin Baird, C. Lambros
United States Public Health Resources
Antimalarial activities ofchloroquine, mefloquine, amodiaquine, and quinine in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum were diminished as a consequence ofmembranefiltration. Filtered drug solutions gave ID50 values up to 25-fold greater than those of non-filtered (ethanol-sterilized) drug solutions. Loss ofactivity byfiltration was overcome by increasing the drug concentration prior to filtration. Water solutions filtered through Millex-GSfilter units consistently showed an absorbance maximum at 277 nm, accompanied by a lesser peak at 225 nm. Water filtrates from Nucleopore and Millex-G Vfilters showed no absorbance at 277 nm and only slight absorbance was evidentfor the Gelmanfilter unit. Activity losses were attributed to extractable contaminating …
