Manual: Measurement Of Evapotranspiration By The Bowen Ratio Energy Balance Method, Joon Kim, Shashi Verma
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The Bowen ratio energy balance method has been widely used by many researchers to estimate the fluxes of water vapor and sensible heat between crops and atmosphere. The energy balance for the crop canopy can be expressed as Rn + G + H + LE + PS + M = 0 (1) where Rn is net radiation, G is soil surface heat flux, H is sensible heat flux and LE is latent heat flux.

The Sky Is Falling: Managing Space Objects, William B. Wirin
The Sky Is Falling: Managing Space Objects, William B. Wirin
Space Law Documents
All countries who launch space vehicles need to focus their attention on steps necessary to prevent damage to mankind by space objects. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty outlines a nation's liability but not the prevention of such damage. Nuclear power sources (NPS), in particular, demand special procedures and precautions. This paper will discuss the reentry into the earth's atmosphere of radioactive materials (such as occurred with COSMOS 954 and COSMOS 1402), the catalogue of space objects maintained by NORAD, and measures which should be taken to avoid damage to or by space objects and debris. The space catalogue presents the …

Planning For Drought: The Role Of State Government, Donald A. Wilhite, Deborah A. Wood
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Although droughts are a frequent occurrence over much of the United States, response by state and federal government has been ineffective and poorly coordinated. Recently, several states have recognized the value of drought emergency planning and have developed plans to assist them in responding more effectively to prolonged periods of water shortage. These states have created an organizational structure to coordinate the assessment and response activities of state and federal agencies. Each state’s drought response plan is unique since each state’s water supply and management problems, and their consequent impacts, are unique. The drought response plans developed by Colorado, South …

Contributions Of Acetate, Lactate, And Glucose To The Accumulation Of Fat In Intramuscular And Subcutaneous Tissues Of Beef Cattle, Stephen B. Smith, John D. Crouse
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The U. S. meat industry faces a dual challenge: it must reduce the fat content of meat carcasses in order to provide a nutritious product with a minimum of waste, while not affecting meat palatability. The positive effects of marbling (fat deposited within muscle) on tenderness and palatability, as well as a meat grading system that penalizes carcasses with little marbling, make it desirable that animals be produced with minimal amounts of fat stored in depots, such as the subcutaneous and perirenal depots, without markedly decreasing intramuscular adipose tissue. This can be accomplished only if the factors regulating lipid deposition …
Permeability Versus Depth In The Upper Oceanic Crust' In Situ Measurements In Dsdp Hole 504b, Eastern Equatorial Pacific, Roger N. Anderson, Mark D. Zoback, Stephen H. Hickman, Robin L. Newmark
Permeability Versus Depth In The Upper Oceanic Crust' In Situ Measurements In Dsdp Hole 504b, Eastern Equatorial Pacific, Roger N. Anderson, Mark D. Zoback, Stephen H. Hickman, Robin L. Newmark
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
In situ permeabilities measured within the upper kilometer of oceanic crust in hole 504B on the south flank of the Costa Rica Rift decrease exponentially from 10-13 to 10-14 m2 in layer 2A (the upper 150m) to 10 -15 to 10-17 m2 in layer 2B (150-550 m into basement), and to 10-17 m2 and lower in layer 2C (deeper than 550 m). We estimate the permeability (k) versus depth (z) to vary as k(z)=0.11e(-z/50)x 10-12 m2. If this permeability versus depth function is representative of …

Refining The Displacement Of Culture And The Use Of Scenes And Themes In Organizational Studies, Nancy C. Morey, Fred Luthans
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
The move to displace the concept of culture traditionally used in anthropology to organizational research is discussed. Issues surrounding the culture concept and the juxtaposition of culture and organization are given special attention. Current thinking about the nature of the process of displacement is refined. Examples from an ongoing study of a city transit organization are used to demonstrate the use of cultural scenes and themes in organizational research.

Protein Supplementation Of Ammoniated Roughages. Ii. Wheat Straw Supplemented With Alfalfa, Blood Meal Or Soybean Meal Fed To Wintering Steers, M. L. Nelson, Ivan G. Rush, T. J. Klopfenstein
Protein Supplementation Of Ammoniated Roughages. Ii. Wheat Straw Supplemented With Alfalfa, Blood Meal Or Soybean Meal Fed To Wintering Steers, M. L. Nelson, Ivan G. Rush, T. J. Klopfenstein
Panhandle Research and Extension Center
Two winter steer growth trials were conducted to investigate responses of steer calves to ammoniation of wheat straw, level of alfalfa haylage (50 or 66.7% of diet) and source of supplemental protein, soybean meal (SBM), blood meal (BM), or a blood meal-urea mixture (BM-U). In trial 1, the main effect of arnmoniation significantly increased average daily gain (ADG) from .15 to .24 kg/d, dry matter intake (DMI) from 4.86 to 5.29 kg/d and gain/feed from .029 to .044. The higher level of alfalfa haylage significantly increased DMI from 4.78 to 5.36 kg/d. Gain during a subsequent grazing period was unaffected …
On Location With 'Silas Marner', Kathleen Adams
On Location With 'Silas Marner', Kathleen Adams
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
If you have ever regarded the life of an actor to be a glamorous one, it would have been something of an eye-opener to have visited the location of the BBC Television film of 'Silas Marner' on a cold March day. The day had followed one of almost continuous rain, and I have never seen such mud, nor so much of it. The setting was in the Cotswolds, chosen because this area remains one of the last almost totally unspoilt regions in England. The production team, eager to be as authentic as possible, had travelled the length and breadth of …
Originality And Influence In George Caleb Bingham's Art, Stephen C. Behrendt
Originality And Influence In George Caleb Bingham's Art, Stephen C. Behrendt
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The work of "the Missouri artist," George Caleb Bingham (1811-79), offers us a good opportunity for considering the broad subject of originality and influence in the arts. The combination of originality and convention in paintings such as Fur Traders Descending the Missouri, The Jolly Flatboatmen, and The County Election can tell us much about the dynamics of that branch of American art which sought to reconcile the inherited traditions of formal, academic European art with the often strikingly unconventional reality of a New World.
Often condescendingly labeled "regional" art because of its frequently eclectic emphasis upon the local and the …

In The Rear And Limping A Little: Some Reflections On Medicine, Biotechnology, And The Law: The Roscoe Pound Lectures, Zelman Cowen
Nebraska Law Review
These symposium lectures address the field of medicine, life sciences, and biotechnology that are creating some of the great contemporary challenges of science and technology, raising social, ethical, religious, and legal issues. Awesome powers of medicine that are continually expanded by developments in the life sciences have sparked growing public interest in what are now termed "bioethical" issues. The lectures cover biotechnological developments in the field of organ and tissue transplants and the responses of society and the law to these developments; artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, and surrogate motherhood; and the capacity of medicine and technology to …
Small Groups In Large Classes, Wendy Holmes
Small Groups In Large Classes, Wendy Holmes
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
The fact that "mass lecture" is almost synonymous with "mass class" in academic circles suggests that the only thing an instructor can do with large classes is talk to (or at) them. After some desultory attempts at general discussions, question and answer sessions, and optional discussions for interested students, that is exactly what I settled into in "Introduction to Art," a class in art appreciation which I teach to roughly two hundred students every semester. I clarified and refined my lectures. I distributed mimeographed sheets bearing artists' names and dates and the main points of each lecture. I showed slides …

A Key To The Australian Chrysis With Description Of New Species(Hymenoptera: Chrysididae), Richard M. Bohart
Insecta Mundi
Australian Chrysis form three closely related groups in addition to a few wide-ranging and apparently adventive species. The latter are lincea Fabricius, schiodtei Dahlbom, fuscipennis Brulle, and fossulata F. Smith. The remaining 23 species, including those presently described, appear to be endemic i n the Australia-New Guinea area. Recently, Linsenmaier (1982, Entomofauna 3: 323-349) described a number of new species from Australia. Some of these I have been able to recognize and they are included in the key. Others that I am unable to place, possibly through lack of material, are curtisensis from Queensland and dentifrontis from South Australia. I …

Direct Tv Broadcasts Through Satellite And The Protection Of State Interests, Christo Karakashev
Space Law Documents
Communications play a key role in the flow of information, data and ideas. They are one of the chief element of infrastructure, leading to social changes and economic development. The role of communications increased tremendously with the advent of direct TV broadcasts through satellites which are a powerful means of diffusing information, knowledge and education, as well as of recreation and fun.
An important characteristic of direct TV broadcasts is that various states can broadcast programmes to be received by anyone in the world. In other words these broadcasts do not reckon with state borders and political systems.

Cryogenic Preservation Of Semen From The Greater Sandhill Crane, George F. Gee, Murray R. Bakst, Thomas J. Sexton
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Frozen gene pools (semen or embryos) can provide a safe place for the storage of genetic material for many generations. Cranes (Grus spp.) are one of many species in need of gene pool protection. Of the seven species and four subspecies considered rare or endangered (Archibald et al. 1981), two, the whooping crane (G. americana) and the Mississippi sandhill crane (G. canadensis pulla), are part of captive propagation projects at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, Maryland. Greater sandhill crane (G. c. tabida) semen cryopreservation, under study at Patuxent since 1976 (Sexton …

Modification Of Sand Fly Biting Behavior By Leishmania Leads To Increased Parasite Transmission, Raymond Beach, Gabriel Kjilu, Johannis Leeuwenberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
To attempt rodent-sand fly-rodent transmission of Leishmania major, laboratory-reared Phlebotomus doboscqi were fed on L. major-infected mice and then refed on uninfected mice 21 days later. Flies which refed either probed 1–2 times and took a full blood meal in less than 10 minutes or probed 3 or more times and took little or no blood during a period of 15 minutes or more. When dissected, 7 of 8 flies which experienced difficulty in obtaining a blood meal had flagellates in their cibaria, an observation supporting the hypothesis that parasites in this part of the alimentary canal modify normal …
Potential For Development Of Tolerance By Penicillium Digitatum And Penicillium Italicum After Repeated Exposure To Potassium Sorbate, Lisa L. Schroeder, Lloyd B. Bullerman
Potential For Development Of Tolerance By Penicillium Digitatum And Penicillium Italicum After Repeated Exposure To Potassium Sorbate, Lisa L. Schroeder, Lloyd B. Bullerman
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Two strains of Penicillium digitatum and one strain of Penicillium italicum were exposed to various levels of sorbic acid and potassium sorbate, and the MICs were determined. Selected strains of the molds were then repeatedly exposed to subinhibitory levels of the compounds to determine whether increased tolerance might develop. The MIC of sorbic acid (pH 4.75) to P. digitatum was between 0.02 and 0.025%. The MIC of sorbate (pH 5.5) to two strains of P. digitatum and P. italicum was found to be between 0.06 and 0.08%. Increasing levels of sorbate resulted in increasing growth suppression of the molds. Populations …

In Situ Stress, Natural Fracture Distribution, And Borehole Elongation In The Auburn Geothermal Well, Auburn, New York, Stephen H. Hickman, John H. Healy, Mark D. Zoback
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Hydraulic fracturing stress measurements and a borehole televiewer survey were conducted in a 1.6-km-deep well at Auburn, New York. This well, which was drilled at the outer margin of the Appalachian Fold and Thrust Belt in the Appalachian Plateau, penetrates approximately 1540 m of lower Paleozoics edimentary rocks and terminates 60 m into the Precambrian marble basement. Analysis of the hydraulic fracturing tests indicates that the minimum horizontal principal stress increases in a nearly linear fashion from 9.9 ± 0.2 MPa at 593 m to 30.6 ± 0.4 MPa at 1482 m. The magnitude of the
maximum horizontal principal stress …

Willa Cather's Nebraska Priests And Death Comes For The Archbishop, L. Brent Bohlke
Willa Cather's Nebraska Priests And Death Comes For The Archbishop, L. Brent Bohlke
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
When Willa Cather returned to the prairies of her childhood as a locale for her fiction in O Pioneers! in 1913, she returned to a number of other things as well. Among these were the religious faith and practice of her old neighbors and the importance of this faith to their lives. Cather's experience of rediscovery, struggle, and assimilation of the Christian faith is reflected throughout her Nebraska books and is particularly evident in Death Comes for the Archbishop, written after she, along with her parents, had been confirmed into the Episcopal Church at Grace Church, Red Cloud. Although …

Keynote Address—Politics Of Pesticides, David H. Dietz
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)
The politics of pesticides is a rather humorless topic, as I'm sure most of you know. I've always been told that when you start an address or make a speech you ought to have some kind of humor, if for no other reason that you at least get your audience to listen to you for two minutes during any presen-tation. For those of you that may be members of the Audubon Society or members of the Sierra Club, I'll, in advance, make my apologies for the joke I'm about to tell. It's not really meant as a put down if …
Rat Control In Alberta, Michael J. Dorrance
Rat Control In Alberta, Michael J. Dorrance
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)
A rat control program, administered and coordinated by Alberta Department of Agriculture, has kept Alberta essentially free of Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) since 1950. A control zone, 29 x 600 km, along the eastern border prevents rats from moving into Alberta from the east. Sporadic rat infestations within the interior of Alberta are reported by concerned citizens and eradicated by government personnel. Strong support for the program by citizens and local governments was developed through public education and information. The program has been successful for a variety of reasons including geography, climate, legislation, availability of warfarin, the relatively …
