In Vitro Testosterone Secretion By Testicular Tissue From Young Bulls And The Effects Of Chronic And Acute Exposure To Estradiol- 17Β, M. J. D'Occhio, B. D. Schanbacher, J. E. Kinder Jan 1984

In Vitro Testosterone Secretion By Testicular Tissue From Young Bulls And The Effects Of Chronic And Acute Exposure To Estradiol- 17Β, M. J. D'Occhio, B. D. Schanbacher, J. E. Kinder

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The possibility that estradiol-17/3 may directly influence testicular steroidogenesis in bulls was investigated in vitro. Testicular tissues were incubated for 4 h and regression coefficients (b, ng·ml-1·h-1) based on the increase in testosterone in the medium were used to describe testosterone secretion rates. In the first experiment, testicular tissues from control bulls and bulls chronically implanted with estradiol were incubated in the absence (basal conditions) or presence of 10 mlU/ml human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Under basal conditions, testosterone secretion rates were similar for tissues from control (b = 24.1 ± 6.0) and implanted (b = 34.7 …

Exploring Visual Sociology And The Sociology Of The Visual Arts: Introduction And Selected Bibliography, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Visual studies in the social sciences have recently begun to enjoy increased popularity. Like the interdisciplinary excitement which earlier linked. the behavioral and social sciences to problems in environmental design, this event points to yet greater potential for collaboration between the social sciences, on the one hand, and the design disciplines, on the other. Whereas the interdisciplinary environmental design movement tended to focus specifically on the relationship between humans and the built urban environment (although some landscape architects properly extended their investigations to rural and natural environments), the intersection of visual sociology and the sociology of the visual arts encompasses …

Administration Size And Organization Size: An Examination Of The Lag Structure, John B. Cullen, Douglas D. Baker

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Recent longitudinal studies of the relationship between organization and administrative staff size (Freeman & Hannan, 1975) often to replicate the findings of earlier cross-sectional research (Blau herr, 1971). As a result, many researchers (Kimberly, 1976b) have argued that further longitudinal research is necessary.

The Role Of Recognition In Plant Disease, J. M. Daly

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

As noted by Sequeira (110,111), the term recognition has become very popular in the literature of host-pathogen interactions over the last ten years. Despite recent facile usage, its meaning is not always clear to me. Recognition is defined by Clarke & Knox (16) as the "initial event in cell-cell communication that elicits a defined biochemical, physiological, or morphological response." This requires the not-so-easy task of defining "initial event" and "communica tion" with precise chemical or physical mechanisms. For pathologists, Se queira (110) has provided a more restricted meaning: "An early specific event that triggers a rapid, overt response by the …

Sol Probe And Method Of Obtaining Moisture,Temperature And Root Distribution Of A Soil Profile, Marvin Twersky, William E. Splinter, Bruce C. Sandhorst

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

To provide a profile of simultaneous moisture, temperature and root density characteristics at different depths of soil, a soil probe is inserted in the soil with a viewing and camera section extending above the soil. Similarly, the probe provides a profile of simultaneous moisture, temperature and presence of molds, insects or other foreign matter in grain or similar media including liquid as well as solid granulated material. The portion of the probe that is in the soil or other media includes a source of light or light conveyance and windows which transmit an image of the soil at various depths …

Dedication Of The Medical Jurisprudence Symposium, Richard F. Duncan

Nebraska Law Review

In the medical profession, the impact of technology on our society has been startling, and it is threatening to outrun our ability to respond through legal institutions to the profound questions raised by the New Medicine. In answering these new questions of life and death we are engaged in the process of defining the very essence of our society. This issue of the Nebraska Law Review contains a series of articles from the Medical Jurisprudence Symposium.

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Most modern environmentalists during their formative years have had little actual contact with wildlife under natural conditions. Their wildlife philosophies have been developed via the mass media and from experiences with animals as pets or confined in zoos. In general, modern environmentalists are sincere, dedicated, idealistic and enthusiastic, but they often lack realism and are blessed with the innocence of naivete. The majority of people in the United States now exhibit strong affection for wild animals and are deeply concerned over any actions perceived as causing pain to individual animals. These attitudes towards wild animals will impact on future wildlife …

Workshop-Discussion Session, Joesph M. Schaefer

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

The purpose of the workshop-discussion session was to establish a list of ideas that would provide the best focus and direction to improve wildlife damage control programs. During this session the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) (Delbecq et al. 1975) was used to: 1) identify and rank obstacles that limit the effectiveness of wildlife damage control efforts, and 2) generate possible solutions to the most important obstacles. This format allowed equal and full participation and was successful in generating many original ideas.

A Profile Of Nebraska Extension Agents Related To Their Awareness, Self-Perceived Confidence Levels, Attitudes And Present Practices In Selected Areas Of Mass Media Communications, Susan Louise Register

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Purpose. It was the purpose of this study to construct a profile of Nebraska Extension Agents related to their awareness, self-perceived confidence levels, attitudes and present practices in selected areas of mass media communications. Method. A questionnaire, developed by the author, was mailed to 100 percent of the Nebraska Extension Agents. The questionnaire used a Likert scale to measure self-perceived confidence levels and educational effectiveness in regard to selected mass media tasks. A five point Likert scale was used to measure how often selected source materials were used in creating media releases. Personal media habits were revealed as well as …

Across The 49th Thunderstorms In The Northern Great Plains, Alec H. Paul Oct 1983

Across The 49th Thunderstorms In The Northern Great Plains, Alec H. Paul

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Hail, lightning, flash floods, erosion, severe gusty winds, and tornadoes produce multimillion- dollar losses to the economy of the northern plains each summer. Research into these meteorological phenomena has been fragmented by the presence of political boundaries in the Great Plains, especially the 49th parallel, which separates the United States and Canada. Perceptions of and responses to the thunderstorm hazard still differ north and south of the border. Tornadoes, for example, have only recently appeared in the weather forecasts for the Canadian prairies, and such responses to summer storms as weather modification experiments and hail insurance coverage have been made …

Public Relations In Environmental And Vertebrate Pest Research, Bruce A. Colvin, Paul L. Hegdal, William B. Jackson

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

In our efforts to investigate environmental concerns, such as vertebrate pests, we as scientists too often neglect or fail to recognize the importance and value of strong public relations. Most scientists would agree that public relations and public education are honorable components of research, but time is often a precious commodity to be utilized in resolving the ecological problem under investigation. Additionally, in many situations, due either to the personality of the researcher or public sensitivity to the problem area, many scientists shy away from public interaction. In the vertebrate pest field, we often deal with ecological problems that stem …

Escherichia Coli Strains Producing Streptococcus Mutans Proteins Responsible For Colonization And Virulence, Roy Curtiss Iii, Robert G. Holt, Raul G. Barletta, James P. Robeson, Shigeno Saito Jun 1983

Escherichia Coli Strains Producing Streptococcus Mutans Proteins Responsible For Colonization And Virulence, Roy Curtiss Iii, Robert G. Holt, Raul G. Barletta, James P. Robeson, Shigeno Saito

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Streptococcus mutans is a principal etiologic agent of dental caries and is likely one of the most ubiquitous bacterial infectious disease agents worldwide. The ability of S. mutans to colonize the oral cavity is due to sucroseindependent and sucrose-dependent adherence to the pellicle-coated tooth surface with glucan facilitated aggregation between cells to result in plaque. Cariogenicity is then caused by the ability of S. mutans in plaque to metabolize free sugars and both extra and intracellular complex carbohydrates to yield predominantly lactic acid. The S. mutans gene products that contribute to colonizing ability and thus virulence include glucosyltransferases, glucanbinding proteins, …

Dryland Agriculture: Sociology, J. Allen Williams Jr., Lynn K. White, David R. Johnson

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The physical environment of the Great Plains region in the USA is unique to the nation. It presents a set of climate and land conditions so extreme that for many years it was known as the "great American desert." As late as 1823, Major Long of the Army Engineers reported that most of the land between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains "is almost wholly unfit for cultivation, and of course uninhabitable by a people depending on agriculture for their subsistence." Today, by adapting techniques to fit a semiarid location and through the development of new technologies, the Great …
