Multiple Dimensions Of The Moral Majority Platform: Shifting Interest Group Coalitions, Helen A. Moore, Hugh P. Whitt
Multiple Dimensions Of The Moral Majority Platform: Shifting Interest Group Coalitions, Helen A. Moore, Hugh P. Whitt
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The issues raised by the New Political Right and the Moral Majority have overlapped in recent political history. Researchers have assumed that a single additive scale across conservative issues can identify the base of support for the Moral Majority as an organization. We examine general support for the Moral Majority separately from support for six specific issues: teaching creationism, voluntary public school prayer, military defense spending, gun control, pornography and abortion. Data are from a 1982 random sample of adult respondents from Nebraska (N = 1907).
Overall, support for the Moral Majority organization is low. Discriminant analysis identifies fundamentalist and …

Reported Beaver Damage And Control Methods Used In Texas, Jan E. Loven
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Beaver have greatly increased their range in Texas due to restocking and construction of man-made water impoundments. Damages can generally be categorized into dike and impoundment damage, tree damage, and flooding or other damages. These total $9,326,541 for the fiscal years 1983, 1984, and 1985. Methods used to remove beaver include: conibear traps, leg-hold traps, snares, spotlighting, and technical consultation. Live traps are seldom used. Total number of beaver taken for fiscal years 1983, 1984 and 1985 is 5,158.
Furbearer Management And The Steel Foothold Trap, Samuel B. Linhart
Furbearer Management And The Steel Foothold Trap, Samuel B. Linhart
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
The trapping of furbearers, particularly with steel foothold traps, has become more and more controversial. The controversy is significant because the steel trap is considered the most versatile of the various methods available for capturing furbearers (Payne 1980). Whether traps are used to reduce livestock losses by predators or to harvest furs, the controversy has gained the attention and interest of various social factions, each with differing beliefs, attitudes, and philosophies.

The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics And Job Satisfaction Of Secondary Marketing Education Teachers, Connie Kay Staehr Plessman
The Relationship Between Personality Characteristics And Job Satisfaction Of Secondary Marketing Education Teachers, Connie Kay Staehr Plessman
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to (1) determine the personality characteristics of secondary marketing teachers, and (2) to examine the relationship between personality characteristics and selected demographic and attitudinal variables with job satisfaction (intrinsic, extrinsic, and general) of marketing teachers. A random sample of 475 marketing teachers was drawn from the membership of the national Marketing Education Association; responses were received from 73 percent of the marketing teachers surveyed. Two instruments, the Myers-Briggs Personality Indicator and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, were combined with attitudinal and demographic questions for use in data collection. Eight null hypotheses were proposed to investigate …

Voltaire's Fables Of Discretion: The Conte Philosophique In Le Taureau Blanc, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
Voltaire's Fables Of Discretion: The Conte Philosophique In Le Taureau Blanc, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French Language and Literature Papers
Le Taureau blanc (1774) offers remarkable insight into Voltaire's use of the conte as persuasive discourse for two reasons. First, as the purest example of the genre among his last contes, it is in many ways the quintessence of his talents as a conteur. This tale does not cover any new ideological territory in its treatment of the Old Testament, a preoccupation found in much of his production of the Ferney period; nor does it introduce any technical innovations. But unlike Voltaire's last tragedies, where his reworking of the themes and dramatic conventions of his dramatic successes of the 1730s …

The Emergence Of The American Agriculture Movement, 1977-1979, John Dinse, William P. Browne
The Emergence Of The American Agriculture Movement, 1977-1979, John Dinse, William P. Browne
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Beginning in late 1977, the media, television in particular, portrayed as a unique cultural phenomenon an emerging American Agriculture Movement (AAM), a pending farm strike, and a depressed farm economy that had caused this mobilization. Much was indeed unique, especially to the individual farmers and the specific manner in which they were attempting to apply political pressures, but the American Agriculture Movement itself was similar to other organizational attempts that have taken place in rural America.
In the following paper we chronicle the emergence of the American Agriculture Movement as a distinct entity, identify the common features in the emergence …

Proceedings Of The Second Eastern Wildilfe Damage Control Conference (Complete Volume), Peter T. Bromley (Edited By)
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 2nd (1985)
The papers and abstracts of the proceedings were reproduced from camera-ready materials provided by the authors. The quality of the published proceedings is a credit to the authors, who followed editorial directions very well and who painstakingly reviewed their papers. The proceedings contains only papers and abstracts submitted for publication; in a few instances authors did not provide papers or sent only an abstract, which would permit publication of their work in professional journals. Funds to support the publication were provided by North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, USDA Extension Service, USDA Forest Service and USDI Fish and Wildlife Service.

Agreement Between Reporters And Editors In Mississippi, Will Norton Jr., John W. Windhauser, Allyn Boone
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications
Both newspaper editors and reporters act as decision makers in their selections of "newsworthy" events to be published. But what editors include in newspapers is influenced by the news values of their colleagues or superiors. Studies of gatekeepers who control the flow of news have reported such results about the news selection process. Individual opinions of editors, newsroom schedules and publication technicalities, and news sources were found to affect choices of stories. Similarly, selected social and structural characteristics of media organizations had "subjective" implications for media "output." Other studies suggested that a high degree of similarity occurred in the news …
Dispersal Of A Heron-Egret Rookery, Douglas I. Hall
Dispersal Of A Heron-Egret Rookery, Douglas I. Hall
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 2nd (1985)
A rookery composed of an estimated 10,000 herons and egrets (family: Ardeidae) located in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas was successfully dispersed in the Spring of 1983. A diversified scaring program was planned and initiated prior to the onset of courtship display and nest building. The roost relocation was subsequently followed by habitat alteration procedures to make the 5-acre stand of primarily Eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) unattractive as a future roosting site. Although no nesting occurred at the site in 1983, the lack of an early scaring program in the Spring of 1984 resulted in the uncleared portion …

Role And Responsibilities Of State Cooperative Extension Services For Wildlife Damage Control, James L. Byford
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 2nd (1985)
The Cooperative Extension Service was established by the Smith-Lever Act in 1914. It was designed to improve the lives of people, through education in: agriculture, natural resources, home economics and community development. Its audiences include both adult and youth. 4-H is the primary youth audience. The Cooperative Extension Service is an "extension" of the Land Grant university in each state. Its employees include university faculty (specialists) and professional agents in every county, in every state in the country. Extension's primary mission is to conduct an educational program, using research-based information. Research results are condensed into a form that the average …

A new expression for the radial dose distribution, tested against available data, and yielding good agreement with enzyme and virus cross sections, is used to calculate cellular inactivation cross sections from track theory models and parameters. We use a cellular model and radiosensitivity parameters, fitted to HILAC data 15 years ago, to represent mammalian cells irradiated at the UNILAC. The observed branching with Z and the decline in cellular action cross sections with an increase in ion LET are attributed to thindown; that is, to the limits imposed by the maximum radial penetration of delta rays. Target size and structure …
Pawnee Geography Historical And Sacred, Waldo R. Wedel, Douglas R. Parks
Pawnee Geography Historical And Sacred, Waldo R. Wedel, Douglas R. Parks
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The earth is a fundamental religious symbol for American Indian peoples. Among horticultural and hunting tribes alike, Mother Earth is the female principle, the expression of fertility and creator of life, begetting vegetation, animals, and humans. In this elemental role she often appears conspicuously in religious rituals. For many American Indian peoples, specific geographical features on the earth also figured prominently in tribal conceptions of the sacral world. The Pawnee Indians, who formerly lived in east central Nebraska, provide an instructive example of a people who had an elaborate and unique set of beliefs about such landmarks and who incorporated …
Male Effects On Fecundity In Drosophila Melanogaster, Ary A. Hoffman, Lawrence G. Harshman
Male Effects On Fecundity In Drosophila Melanogaster, Ary A. Hoffman, Lawrence G. Harshman
Lawrence G. Harshman Publications
Effects of male Drosophila melanogaster on female fecundity and productivity were examined, considering both females held in containers with males and females exposed to male effects not involving contact. Females were more fecund when male effects were present, and the largest increase was recorded when vials were previously conditioned by males. This effect was probably due to the growth of transmitted microorganisms, which were observed on the laying surface, as further experiments with vials conditioned by virgin females showed a similar increase in fecundity. A male-specific effect was isolated by conditioning bottles containing only agar with males and virgin females. …

Western Women And True Womanhood Culture And Symbol In History And Literature, June O. Underwood
Western Women And True Womanhood Culture And Symbol In History And Literature, June O. Underwood
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
History cannot happen," says Henry Nash Smith, "that is, men cannot engage in purposive group behavior without images which simultaneously express collective desires and impose coherence." Although Smith does not mention it, women too engaged in purposive group behavior. They too had images that organized their experiences and gave impetus to action. And since women were part of the great western migration, the images that made sense to them and engaged them in action within the westering experience were formative in their history.1
This article will look at nineteenth-century western women and the symbols that formed their particular history …
Women On The Great Plains Recent Developments Research, Glenda Riley
Women On The Great Plains Recent Developments Research, Glenda Riley
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
During the past dozen years or so, scholars have become increasingly involved in researching the lives and experiences of women on the Great Plains. At the same time, interest in learning more about the lives of all types of western, frontier, farm, and rural women has burgeoned. As a result, researchers now devote their careers to these topics, national conferences convene to disseminate and refine this increasing scholarship, and journals commit theme issues to presenting research results.
This essay is a survey of research developments concerning plainswomen between the early 1970s and the present day. The purpose of such an …
Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Polysaccharide Depolymerase Associated With Phage-Infected Erwinia Amylovora, Peter A. Vandenbergh, Ann M. Wright, Anne K. Vidaver
Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Polysaccharide Depolymerase Associated With Phage-Infected Erwinia Amylovora, Peter A. Vandenbergh, Ann M. Wright, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Erwinia amylovora infected with bacteriophage ERA103 produced an enzyme which degraded the extracellular polysaccharide of noninfected cells. The depolymerase enzyme was purified 15-fold by a procedure which included ammonium sulfate precipitation, ultracentrifugation, CM-Sephadex batchwise separation, Sephadex G-50 column chromatography, and Sephacryl S-200 column chromatography. The enzyme had a molecular weight of approximately 21,000 and a pH optimum of 6.0. Activity was enhanced by supplements of 2-mercaptoethanol or dithiothreitol.

Calmodulin Levels In The Yeast And Mycelial Phases Of Ceratocystis Ulmi, Ganapathy Muthukumar, Rajiv K. Kulkarni, Kenneth W. Nickerson
Papers in Microbiology
The calmodulin content of the yeast and mycelial phases of Ceratocystis ulmi was determined by radioimmunoassay. Calmodulin levels increased at the G1-S boundary of the cell cycle, coinciding with the first visible appearance of buds or germ tubes. However, in both phases the cellular calmodulin levels were equivalent. No differential synthesis was observed.

The Chrysis Gibba Species Group In The New World (Hymenoptera, Chrysididae), R. M. Bohart
Insecta Mundi
The gibba group of Chrysis occurs in many parts of the world. It is characterized in part by a lengthened clypeus. Other features are the usually long malar space, micro-ridging on the scapal basin, a frontal carina (when developed) with a broad M-shape and partial posterior rami (broadly biconvex in one species), tergum II apicolaterally obtuse, and tergum III with 4 teeth or lobes. American forms in the male, and to lesser extent the female, have long whitish hair beneath the head and on the opposing surface of the forecoxae. Other legs are also quite hairy, especially in males. Sternum …

Malone's suggestion of challenge, curiosity, and fantasy as the key aspects of instrinsic motivation for learning, based on his analyses of computer games, is used as a format for discussing four interactive videodisc lessons for general physics. The idea of challenging learning is expressed in the lessons based on the Physics and Automobile Collisions and Energy Tranformations Featuring the Bicycle videodiscs. Curiosity is especially evoked in the opening ballet scenes in the Studies In Motion videodisc. As part of a fantasy story line, students are asked to solve the puzzle of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse in a videodisc lesson …
