Heg86-210 Being A 'Grand' Parent, Herbert G. Lingren
Heg86-210 Being A 'Grand' Parent, Herbert G. Lingren
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This guide explores grandparenting, including the benefits derived from being a grandparent, suggestions on how to be a good grandparent, precautions to take when grandchildren come for a visit, and ways to have fun with grandchildren.
Grandparents Today
Approximately 75 percent of Americans over 65 have living grandchildren, according to a 1975 Harris poll. Most grandparents begin their role during middle age. The average age for becoming a grandmother is 46 and may be as early as 32. This means we need to set aside many outdated ideas about grandparent. They are active people. They do not necessarily get around …
Columnaris Disease Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock, T. C. Hsu, E. B. Shotts Jr.
Columnaris Disease Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock, T. C. Hsu, E. B. Shotts Jr.
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Columnaris disease is an acute to chronic bacterial infection that affects anadromous salmonids and virtually all species of warmwater fishes. Davis (1922), who first described the disease, named it columnaris because the causal bacterial cells seen in wet mounts of affected gills and fins were arranged in columnar aggregations. Ordal and Rucker (1944) were the first to isolate the causal organism and, based on cellular morphology, identified it as a myxobacterium. Organisms classified in the order Myxobacterales are long, thin gram-negative rods that are motile on agar media by a creeping or flexing motion. They have a life cycle composed …

Blau's Theory Of Structural Differentiation Revisited: A Theory Of Structural Change Or Scale?, John B. Cullen, Kenneth S. Anderson, Douglas D. Blaker
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
The major objective of this study was to determine if Blau's (1970) theory of structural differentiation better captures differences in scale between organizations or structural changes within organizations. Data gathered on 134 Ph.D.-granting universities over nine years permitted us to compare results of within-organizations tests of Blau's theory those from both cross-sectional and longitudinal between-organization tests. The findings suggest that the theory's power lies in explaining structural differences between organizations rather than in explaining structural change.
Drought Policy In The U.S. And Australia: A Comparative Analysis, Donald A. Wilhite
Drought Policy In The U.S. And Australia: A Comparative Analysis, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Federal and state governments in the United States and Australia have come to play a key role in attempts to mitigate the impact of drought. Government actions have usually taken the form of loans and grants to individual citizens, businesses, and municipalities experiencing the hardship of drought. Most of these actions have occurred in an environment of crisis management, rather than as a result of clearly stated policy objectives. Based on a review and evaluation of recent drought policy in the United States and Australia, recommendations are offered on ways to improve the United States’ approach. A national drought plan …

United States Department of Energy: Publications
Three-dimensional modeling of convection in the oceanic crust at Deep Sea Drilling Project site 504B using an integral finite difference model reasonably duplicates underpressures, surface heat flow, downhole temperature profiles, and fluid drawdown rates observed by in situ measurements in the borehole. The major constraint to produce such good fits is the permeability versus depth function,a quantity which was actually measured in the borehole. Pronounced "underpressuring" (fluid pressures less than hydrostatic) occurs throughout the convection cell if and only if a tight, nearly impermeable cap rock (chert) exists over the cell. The computed flow rates of water from the ocean …

Kinetic Analysis has been successful for metallic elements in relatively isolated areas. In this study it is applied to a complex organic compound in a geographical area with a large urban component. Ten media compartments are included, with man as the ultimate receptor. Field data were collected for only 6 of the media and were not used in the analysis but were compared to the calculated steady state concentrations. The greatest differences between calculated and observed values were 4.8-fold for soil and 5.4-fold for sediment. The field sampling regime for soils was biased towards areas of industrialization and probably explains …

Geometric Abstraction In America, Donald Bartlett Doe
Geometric Abstraction In America, Donald Bartlett Doe
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
Precisionism and Regionalism were the dominant styles of the late Twenties and early Thirties; the isolationist and chauvinistic attitudes which encouraged conservative imagery of the American Scene generated scorn for Modernist art. Sounding very like the critics who derided the Armory Show of 1913, Thomas Craven (for example), writing in the New York American in 1936 about A. E. Gallatin's purchase of Picasso's Three Musicians for his Museum of Living Art, set a standard for vituperation:
Rallying around a fallen idol, the vested interests, collectors, nuts and professional esthetes have joined hands in a last desperate campaign to restore the …

Rhythmic Clay: A View Of Jun Kaneko's Process, Daphne A. Deeds
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
In this diverse age of artistic pluralism, retrospection and cynicism, Jun Kaneko's ceramic sculptures prevail as confirmations of essential constancies. The certainties of man's elemental graphic urge, the determinism of archetypal shapes, and the symbiosis of time and space are all revealed in Kaneko's three dimensional abstractions.
Kaneko employs abstraction, not to transcend contemporary complexities, but to reveal the inherent synchrony of the natural world. From a position of acceptance, rather than control, Kaneko is but one participant in a private conversation with his media. And though this internal conversation is not directed at Kaneko's audience, we partake of his …

Two Toxin-Converting Phages From Escherichia Coli 0157:H7 Strain 933 Encode Antigenically Distinct Toxins With Similar Biologic Activities, Nancy A. Strockbine, Lilian R. M. Marques, John W. Newland, H. Williams Smith, Randall K. Holmes, Alison D. O'Brien
United States Public Health Resources
Escherichia coli 0157:H7 strain 933 contains two distinct toxin-converting phages (933J and 933W). The biologic activities and antigenic relationship between the toxins produced by 933J and 933W lysogens of E. coli K-12, as well as the homology of the genes that encode the two toxins, were examined in this study. The 933J and 933W toxins, like Shiga toxin produced by Shigella dysenteriae type 1, were cytotoxic for the same cell lines, caused paralysis and death in mice, and caused fluid accumulation in rabbit ileal segments. The cytotoxic activity of 933J toxin for HeLa cells was neutralized by anti-Shiga toxin, whereas …
Changes In Feeding And Crawling Rates Of Hydrobia Truncata (Prosobranchia: Hydrobiidae) In Response To Sedimentary Chlorophyll-A And Recently Egested Sediment, Valery E. Forbes, Glenn R. Lopez
Changes In Feeding And Crawling Rates Of Hydrobia Truncata (Prosobranchia: Hydrobiidae) In Response To Sedimentary Chlorophyll-A And Recently Egested Sediment, Valery E. Forbes, Glenn R. Lopez
Valery Forbes Publications
Experiments combining fluorescent particle tracer techniques with time-lapse video recording demonstrated that the gastropod Hydrobia truncata decreases crawling rate on patches rich in chlorophyll-a, while maintaining a constant feeding rate as sedimentary chlorophyll-a content varies. In contrast, H. truncata decreases feeding rate but does not change crawling rate upon encounter with patches of recently egested sediment. Depression of feeding rate is less pronounced if the egested material is enriched in chlorophyll-a. For deposit feeders inhabiting highly reworked sediments, the majority of available material may consist of sediment that has been recently egested. For an animal that responds negatively to recently …

George Eliot And American Films, George V. Griffith
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
To Kathleen Adams t discussion of George Eliot film adaptations (Review, 1977), I would Iike to add two interesting items omitted and a few comments. Other than that piece and a few brief remarks about George Eliot theatrical adaptations in a column in the London Illustrated News (Mar. 5, 1927), nothing has been written about Eliot on stage and screen. The subject deserves more treatment.
The silent era of filmmaking in America coincided with a period in American culture when English "classics lt possessed a certain cachet that made them good properties for an entertainment industry with aspirations to something …

George Eliot Unveiled, Kathleen Adams
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
The excitement associated with the unveiling of John Letts' beautiful statue of George Eliot began for the four officers two days before the ceremony. On March 20th she travelled from the bronze casters in High Wycombe, somewhat ungracefully, on the back of a lorry! The plinth, all clean and bright, was ready and waiting, as was a very large crane, hired from Coventry, and causing a traffic warden slight concern as it was parked on double yellow lines; but, happily, she joined in the spirit of the day, and no parking ticket was issued. The press were there from the …
The Dust Bowl Historical Image, Psychological Anchor, And Ecological Taboo, William E. Riebsame
The Dust Bowl Historical Image, Psychological Anchor, And Ecological Taboo, William E. Riebsame
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
T he Dust Bowl is an enduring image in the collective consciousness of Americans. Experience and intuition suggest that a few historical events and eras, and their symbols, endure as important cultural memories or benchmarks. The concept of collective cultural myths or symbols is difficult to define or even to examine. Nevertheless, there is compelling prima facie evidence that the American Dust Bowl is a powerful historical symbol; perhaps not one with the power of Frederick Jackson Turner's frontier, but certainly one that focuses attention whenever issues of Great Plains culture and agriculture arise.
In the light of the stringent …

The Proposed Emasculation Of Section 7 Of The Clayton Act, Walter Adams, James W. Brock
The Proposed Emasculation Of Section 7 Of The Clayton Act, Walter Adams, James W. Brock
Nebraska Law Review
The Reagan Administration's recent legislative proposals for antitrust reform would, if enacted by Congress, mark a historic reversal of United States anti-merger policy. They would significantly relax extant statutory prohibitions against potentially anticompetitive mergers and acquisitions. They also would empower the President to grant relief to import-impacted industries by "temporarily" exempting them from the anti-merger laws. The Administration's rationale seems to be that past merger policies are responsible for the declining international competitiveness of American firms, and that those policies have deprived American industries of the ability to restructure themselves in order to achieve (or regain) world-class competitive status. This …

Review Of Stampede City: Power And Politics In The West Edited By Chuck Reasons, Brenton M. Barr
Review Of Stampede City: Power And Politics In The West Edited By Chuck Reasons, Brenton M. Barr
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Stampede City inquires into the boom and bust generated by the petroleum industry in Calgary, Alberta, between the mid 1970s and early 1980s. Calgary is Canada's sixth largest population center but is the corporate and financial center of the country's petroleum industry. In economic terms, what benefits that industry benefits the city. The authors of this book argue that what is good for the petroleum industry, however, is not always good for all inhabitants of Calgary. The headings of Stampede City's nine lively and provocative chapters reflect many of the authors' sentiments: "Calgary: Where Free Enterprise costs a little more"; …

Drought Mitigation In Australia Reducing The Losses But Not Removing The Hazard, R. L. Heathcote
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In Australia technology has reduced but not eliminated the impact of drought and seems set to do the same for the foreseeable CO2-induced climate change. To document this claim, I wish here to consider first a brief history of drought in Australia-pointing up some parallels and contrasts with the North American experience; second, to outline the various strategies (technological and nontechnological) that have been adopted to try to mitigate drought; third, to review the current thinking on the effect of increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 on the Australian climate and their releva9ce to agricultural and pastoral activities through possible modification …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
We investigated the relationship of the presence of antibodies to HTLV-III and immunologic abnormalities in patients with hemophilia. Serum antibodies to HTLV-III were analyzed by ELISA assay, immunoprecipitation of labeled cell extracts, and immunoprecipitation of purified HTLV-III p24. Thirty-four (61%) of the total group (n = 56) had antibody to HTLV-III; 34 (76%) of 45 patients given commercial factor VIII preparations were seropositive, compared with none of 11 patients treated exclusively with cryoprecipitate obtained from volunteer blood donors. Of patients who were seropositive for HTLV-III antibody, 94% had abnormal T4/T8 ratios, and 33% of those whose serum was antibody …

Genetics Of The Screwworm Fly, David B. Taylor, Estela Martinez Cuevas
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Three spontaneous eye mutants of Cochliomyia hominivorax, the screwworm fly, are described and characterized. The mutants, yellow eye (ye), orange eye (or), and white eye (wh), segregate independently and are recessive. Yellow eye is recessively epistatlc to orange eye and dominantly epistatic to white eye. All three mutants have complete penetrance, are autosomal, and have little effect on fly viabillty under laboratory conditions.

Standard techniques for the analysis of prehistoric soils have not been devised. It is unlikely that any single technique is applicable to all types of fecal remains. This is due to various environmental conditions which effect the preservation of helminth ova. In general, gravitational sedimentation is a useful technique for isolating helminth eggs and larvae from coprolites. Latrine soils pose greater problems for helminthological examination. Although various clinical techniques have been successfully utilized in soil study, it is important to remember that some latrine soils have not yielded helminth eggs to any clinical technique. Consequently the paleoparasitologist must be ready …
Biological Effects Of Heavy Ions From The Standpoint Of Target Theory, Robert Katz
Biological Effects Of Heavy Ions From The Standpoint Of Target Theory, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
The biological effect of heavy ions is best described through the action cross section, as a function of the end-point of interest and the charge and speed of the ion. In track theory this is called the “ion-kill" cross section, for it is the effect produced by a single heavy ion and its delta rays. As with nuclear emulsions the biological track structure passes from the grain count regime to the track width regime to the thindown region with an increase in LET. With biological cells, as with any detector capable of storing sub-lethal damage, with low LET irradiation the …

Transposon Mutagenesis And Excision Of R' Plasmids By Conjugative, Chimeric Plasmid Puw942 In Extra-Slow-Growing Rhizobium Japonicum Strains, Alahari Arunakumari, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Transposons Tn501 (specifying mercury resistance) and Tn7 (specifying resistance to trimethoprim and streptomycin) were introduced into extra-slow-growing Rhizobium japonicum by conjugal transfer of the 82 kilobase chimeric plasmid pUW942. Mercury-resistant transconjugants were obtained at a frequency of 10-7 to 10-9. The transfer frequency of streptomycin resistance was lower than that of mercury resistance, and Tn7 was relatively unstable. pUW942 was not maintained as an autonomously replicating plasmid in R. japonicum strains. However, some of the Hgr transconjugants from the RJ19FY, RJ17W, and RJ12S strains acquired antibiotic markers of the vector plasmid pUW942. Southern hybridization of plasmid …

Genotype And Genotype X Environment Interaction Effects For Forage Yield And Quality Of Intermediate Wheatgrass, Kenneth P. Vogel, P. E. Reece, J. F. S. Lamb
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Intermediate wheatgrass [Thinopyrum intermedia (Host) Barkworth and D.R. Dewey] is grown over a vast geographical area in North America, but information on the genetic variability for agronomic traits and the stability of these traits over environments is limited. Genotype and genotype X environment interaction effects for forage yield and quality of intermediate wheatgrass were studied using 36 strains (plant introductions, experimental strains, and a released cultivar). They were grown in two central Great Plains environments, Lincoln and Alliance, NE, that differ markedly in climate. Forage yield and forage quality, measured by in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and percent …
