United Conservation Alliance, Laurence R. Jahn

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

We gather here and reflect on successes in wildlife conservation, restoration, and management; and make plans for more beneficial actions. Significant achievements have been madein public education and wildlife management, as shown by increases in some wildlife populations. But a continuing pressing challenge involves responding to some wildlife population declines, as well as wildlife damage and nuisance situations, as the human population increases and dominates the landscape.

As you well know, management successes involve imagination and dedication of people, such as those gathered here. Your efforts play an important role in helping to manage wildlife, and provide associated outdoor recreational …

Efficacy And Methodology Of Urban Pigeon Control With Drc-1339, Keith M. Blanton, Bernice U. Constantine, Gerald L. Williams

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

During 1990 and 1991, feral pigeon (Columbia tivia) baiting programs using compound DRC-1339 were con in 6 cities in Kentucky and Tennessee. U. S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Damage Control (ADC) personnel evaluated each problem site, selected bait sites, supervised prebaidng, mixed, and toxic bait. In most cases, local personnel conducted the prebaiting and disposed of dead birds. Seven pigeon flocks con 95-735 birds were reduced by up to 100% with 1 or 2 baitings with 0.37 % DRC-1339-treated bait. Most birds died at their areas or on rooftops where they were not …

Dissociation Quotients Of Oxalic Acid In Aqueous Sodium Chloride Media To 175c, Richard Kettler, Donald A. Palmer, David J. Wesolowski

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The first and second molal dissociation quotienls of oxalic acid were measured potenliometrically in a concentration cell filled with hydrogen electrodes. The emf of oxalic acid-bioxalate solutions was measured relative to an HCI standard solution from 25 to 125°C over 25° intervals at nine ionic strengths ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 molal (NaCl). The molal dissociation quotients and available literature data were treated in the all anionic form by a five-term equation that yielded the following thermodynamic quantities at infinite dilution and 25°C: logKIa = -1.277±0.010, ΔHl̊a = -4.1± 1.1 kJ-mol-1, ΔSl̊a = 38±4 J-K …

Drought Planning: A Process For State Government, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 1991

Drought Planning: A Process For State Government, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought has been a prevalent feature of the American landscape during the latter part of the 1980s, producing serious socioeconomic and environmental consequences. These recent experiences with drought have renewed concern about the inadequacy of federal and state contingency planning efforts and the lack of coordination for assessment and response efforts between these levels of government. This paper presents the results of research aimed at facilitating the preparation of drought contingency plans by state government in conjunction with a state’s overall water management planning activity. The ten-step drought plan development process reported is intended to improve mitigation efforts through more …

G91-1022 Guide To Growing Houseplants, Don Steinegger, Frederick P. Baxendale, John E. Watkins Jan 1991

G91-1022 Guide To Growing Houseplants, Don Steinegger, Frederick P. Baxendale, John E. Watkins

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Proper care can extend houseplants' lives. This NebGuide offers hints on conditioning, light, fertilizing and more.

Many people enjoy houseplants; in fact, raising them is one of the fastest growing indoor hobbies. Caring for houseplants offers opportunities for people who like to work with living things and watch them develop. Today, houseplants are an integral part of indoor decor -- especially in winter.

An artificial indoor environment often hinders plant development. High temperatures, low humidity, lack of sunlight, poor soil conditions, and improper watering contribute to most houseplant problems. In addition, insects or plant diseases occasionally damage houseplants.

While plants …

Habitat Associations And Relative Densities Of Rodent Populations In Cultivated Areas Of Central Argentina, James N. Mills, Barbara A. Ellis, Kelly T. Mckee, Julio I. Maiztegui, James E. Childs

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Small mammals were livetrapped during 12 months in crop fields and weedy borders at 18 sites in central Argentina. A total of 1,652 mammals of 14 species was captured during3 3,060 trap-nights. Six species of rodents comprised > 95% of captures. Periodically disturbed fields of crops were dominated by Calomys musculinus and C. laucha, and to a lesser extent Mus musculus. A second group composed of Akodon azarae, Bolomys obscures, and Oligoryzomys flavescens primarily inhabited the more stable, weedy borders of cultivated fields. Peaks in relative densities of C. musculinus, C. laucha, and M . musculus …

Transformation Of 1-Aminonapththalene At The Surface Of Smectite Clays, Calvin C. Ainsworth, Bruce D. Mcveety, Steven C. Smith, John M. Zachara Jan 1991

Transformation Of 1-Aminonapththalene At The Surface Of Smectite Clays, Calvin C. Ainsworth, Bruce D. Mcveety, Steven C. Smith, John M. Zachara

United States Department of Energy: Publications

One-aminonaphthalene is sorbed onto the Na-saturated smectite clays, montmorillonite and hectorite, by cation exchange. In the presence of Fe3+ either in the clay structure or on the clay surface, sorption is followed by the formation of a blue-colored complex, with the continuous disappearance of aminonaphthalene from solution and the clay surface. The rate of aminonaphthalene disappearance decreases as pH increases. With time, four major products that appear to be structural isomers of N(4- aminonaphthyl)-1-naphthylamine are produced. A simplified model of this transformation is suggested to be the oxidation by Fe3+ of sorbed aminonaphthalene forming a radical cation-clay complex. …

Evaluation Of The Role Of Shiga And Shiga-Like Toxins In Mediating Direct Damage To Human Vascular Endothelial Cells, Vernon L. Tesh, James E. Samuel, Liyanage P. Perera, John B. Sharefkin, Alison D. O'Brien Jan 1991

Evaluation Of The Role Of Shiga And Shiga-Like Toxins In Mediating Direct Damage To Human Vascular Endothelial Cells, Vernon L. Tesh, James E. Samuel, Liyanage P. Perera, John B. Sharefkin, Alison D. O'Brien

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Infection with Shinga toxin- and Shinga-like toxin -producing strains of Shigella dysenteriae and Escherichia coli, respectively, can progress to the hemolytic-uremic syndrome. It has been hypothesized that circulating Shinga toxin, Shinga-like toxins, and endotoxins may contribute to the disease by directly damaging glomerular endothelial cells. The effects of these toxins on HeLa, Vero, and human vascular endothelial cells (EC) were examined. Confluent EC were sensitive to Shinga toxin but were at least 106-fold less sensitive to the toxins than were Vero cells. Shinga toxin was the predominant cytotoxic factor. Lipopolysaccharides were not cytotoxic and did not augment …

Enhancing Creativity In A Graduate Course On Creativity: Entering The Time And Space Of The Young Child, Carolyn P. Edwards, Doris J. Shallcross, Julie Maloney

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

In designing a graduate class at the University of Massachusetts, called "Creativity and the Young Child," we built an experience for adults based on a highly regarded European preschool program based on the visual arts. The program, found in the municipal schools for three- to six- year-olds in the city of Reggio Emilia, Italy, is designed to foster young children's learning, representation, and expression through exploration and mastery of many symbolic media. We wanted to find out whether American adults exposed to the theoretical and practical elements of the Reggio Emilia approach - but on an adult level - would …

Integrating Cognitive Ethology With Cognitive Psychology, Sonja I. Yoerg, Alan Kamil Jan 1991

Integrating Cognitive Ethology With Cognitive Psychology, Sonja I. Yoerg, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Cognitive ethology has been defined by Griffin (1978,1981, 1984) as the study of mental experiences in animals, restricting the domain of the field to phenomena thought to reveal intentionality, awareness, and conscious thinking. We argue that attempts to study these processes, while revealing impressive behavioral complexity, have proven unsuccessful in establishing the importance of mental experiences in determining animal behavior primarily because of the intractability of the problem. We suggest a different approach that draws upon the rich theory and sophisticated methodology of human and animal cognitive psychology while retaining an ecological and evolutionary perspective. Brief accounts of the conceptual …

6. The Use Of The Computer In The Practice Of Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, Lyle F. Schoenfeldt, Jorge L. Mendoza

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

The rapid proliferation of computer technology, in the form of mainframe computers, networks of interconnected machines, and stand-alone personal computers, is having a profound effect on many areas of life. As a result of the spread of computer equipment to offices, homes, and educational institutions; the variety of software applications has grown at an unprecedented rate. With this as background, it should be no surprise that computers have assumed an increasing role in professional practice, including applications in providing services in the area of industrial and organizational psychology.

Industrial-organizational psychologists function in a variety of settings, but primarily provide human …

3. Assessment Of Val Id Ity In Computer-Based Test Interpretations, Kevin L. Moreland

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

The use of computers to interpret psychological tests is a "hot" topic, both within psychology and without. It is hot in the sense of giving rise to an increasing number of books and articles (e.g., Butcher, 1985, 1987; Eyde, 1987; Krug, 1987). It is hot in the sense of giving rise to an ever-increasing number of business enterprises (compare any recent APA Monitor with an issue from 1981). It is hot in the sense of capturing the attention of the news media (e.g., Petterson, 1983). And it is hot in the sense of giving rise to increasing controversy within psychology …

10. Guidelines For Computer Testing, Bert F. Green Jan 1991

10. Guidelines For Computer Testing, Bert F. Green

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

Testing by computer is big business. Many companies are offering software enabling a psychologist to test a client by seating him or her at a computer terminal and pressing Return. The software presents the instructions on the screen, guides the test taker through some sample items to see if the instructions are understood, and then presents the test, automatically recording the responses. After one or more tests have been completed, the equipment scores the responses, and delivers test scores. But it doesn't stop there. It then continues by printing out a complete test interpretation in fairly well-constructed narrative prose. The …

The Effects Of Airline Strikes On Struck And Nonstruck Carriers, Richard Defusco, Scott M. Fuess Jr. Jan 1991

The Effects Of Airline Strikes On Struck And Nonstruck Carriers, Richard Defusco, Scott M. Fuess Jr.

Department of Finance: Faculty Publications

This study provides new evidence on the industry-wide impact of strikes by investigating how strikes have affected the values of struck and nonstruck airlines. Using stock market data for the years 1963-86, the authors show that most strikes adversely affected the value of struck airlines' stock but enhanced the stock value of nonstruck carriers. The results also show that strikes before October 1978, which marked the end of strict regulation of the industry and of the employers' mutual aid pact, had some effects different from those of strikes after that date.

What To Look For And Why When Buying A Telecommunications Switch Jan 1991

What To Look For And Why When Buying A Telecommunications Switch

ACUTA: Other Publications

There are three characteristics of institutions of higher education that have a strong

impact on telecommunications:

. Campus Environment

. Multiple Service Populations

. Limited Budgets

Each characteristic translates into requirements for an effective telecommunication

system.

To Serve the Campus Environment

A campus is usually the first image associated with the word "college" or "university." Typically, institutions of higher education are housed in several buildings which may be fairly close together, or spread over some distance, perhaps reaching across a city or even a state.

To serve the campus user, a system must provide feature transparency, regardless of location. Small …

13.2.8. Rescue And Rehabilitation Of Oiled Birds, Sallie Welte, Lynne Frink Jan 1991

13.2.8. Rescue And Rehabilitation Of Oiled Birds, Sallie Welte, Lynne Frink

Waterfowl Management Handbook

Oil contamination of waterfowl and seabirds has been documented as a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in birds for more than 50 years. Each year more than one million birds may die from oil contamination in North Atlantic waters alone; worldwide mortality is unknown.

Of special concern is that many of the seabirds commonly affected are not prolific breeders, and assessment of each species’ status is handicapped by the difficulty of accurately monitoring trends in marine bird populations.

Oiled bird rehabilitation is an intensive, crisis-oriented response, requiring an experienced management agency, specialized medical expertise, stockpiles of specially designed equipment, …

Words And Music: The Assembling Of Traveling West, Randall Snyder

Randall Snyder Compositions

This paper is a consideration of the art song as a unique collaboration of poet and composer, the result of which, rarely achieving a balance between the two, often resulting in a creation that comprises the predominant artistic vision of one or the other, with poetry usually getting short shrift. This discussion will examine how dfferent methods of text setting can affect the intended meaning of the poem, citing examples of poet-composer relationships. Then I will discuss how these concepts are utilized in my song cycle, Traveling West, settings of poems by Susan Strayer Deal, Marjorie Saiser, Hilda Raz, …

Plate Tectonics, Space, Geologic Time, And The Great Plains: A Primer For Non-Geologists, R. F. Diffendal Jr. Jan 1991

Plate Tectonics, Space, Geologic Time, And The Great Plains: A Primer For Non-Geologists, R. F. Diffendal Jr.

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

For most Americans, "The Great Plains" evokes images of grasslands, dust storms, prairie fires, Indians on horseback, cowboys and wheat lands, and perhaps flat valleys crossed by braided rivers carrying a heavy load of sand and gravel, extremes of weather, and a climate typified by an alternation of droughts and wetter periods. Geologists picture such general images, too, but they also see radical changes in the landscape over periods expressed in millions rather than hundreds of years. Geologically speaking, human activities on the Great Plains are too recent to have much of a place in the broad geologic history of …

Wyoming Political Surprises In The Late 1980s: Deviating Elections In A Conservative Republican State, Cal Clark, Janet Clark

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Wyoming is typical of the states in the upper Great Plains region (Montana, Kansas, Nebraska, and North and South Dakota) in many but not all aspects. In socioeconomic terms, the Great Plains are basically agricultural and rural with fewer prominent urban centers than elsewhere in the nation. Politically the region is generally viewed as conservative and Republican, but this image is subject to several important caveats. First, agrarian crises have periodically fueled insurgent political movements, such as the Populism of the 1890s, Progressivism in the early twentieth century, strong support for Roosevelt's New Deal, and support for populist or liberal …
