The Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act: Analysis Of Probable Ramifications And Arising Issues, Andrew S. Pollock
The Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act: Analysis Of Probable Ramifications And Arising Issues, Andrew S. Pollock
Nebraska Law Review
Architectural works, as expressed and embodied in buildings, architectural plans, and drawings, stand protected as subject matter of copyright, effective December 1, 1990. On that date, President Bush signed legislation that created a new category of protectable subject matter for architectural works. The new law, titled the Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act, effects changes that were determined necessary to fulfill requirements of the Berne Convention, to which the United States became a signatory on March 1, 1989.

Enhancing Soil Conservation Practice Adoption With Targeted Educational Programs, Elbert C. Dickey, David P. Shelton, Paul J. Jasa
Enhancing Soil Conservation Practice Adoption With Targeted Educational Programs, Elbert C. Dickey, David P. Shelton, Paul J. Jasa
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Two independent, but closely related, grant funded educational programs were developed and implemented to reduce soil erosion in selected areas of eastern Nebraska. Traditional extension programming methods as well as other more non-traditional approaches were used extensively to enhance soil conservation practice adoption. In one program, encompassing 220 000 ha (540,000 acre) of cropland, annual soil erosion was reduced by 2.3 million t (2.5 million ton) and annual fuel savings of 1.5 million L (390,000 gal) were achieved through a reduction in the number of tillage operations. In the second project, more than 93 000 m (305,000 ft) of terraces …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The proposals to reinstate Xanthomonas citri (ex Hasse 1915) Gabriel et al. 1989 and X. phaseoli (Smith 1897) Gabriel et al. 1989 are examined in terms of conventional criteria for describing new species. We suggest that the descriptions presented are insufficient in terms of modern practice for the purposes of formal classification in the genus Xanthomonas. To create guidelines for future reinstatements, the Judicial Commission of the International Committee on Systematic Bacteriology is requested to arrange for the preparation and promulgation of minimal standards for Xanthomonas. The pathovars proposed, X. campestris pv. aurantifolii Gabriel et al. 1989 …

A Three-Dimensional Field Study Of Solute Transport Through Unsaturated, Layered, Porous Media 1. Methodology, Mass Recovery, And Mean Transport, T. R. Ellsworth, W. A. Jury, F. F. Ernst, P. J. Shouse
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
A field experiment is reported which monitored the three-dimensional movement of cubic solute plumes through an unsaturated, loamy sand soil. The plumes were created with one of two methods, a two-dimensional flux application and an initial resident distribution. Soil coring was used to sample resident concentrations for the three solutes studied. The data were analyzed using the method of moments. In addition to the solute transport experiments, a detailed set of physical properties of the field was obtained by excavating three pits to a depth of 5.0m and also by taking soil cores throughout the study area. This paper explains …
Mechanisms Of Hybrid Sunflower Resistance To The Sunflower Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), Marc D. Anderson, Gary J. Brewer
Mechanisms Of Hybrid Sunflower Resistance To The Sunflower Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), Marc D. Anderson, Gary J. Brewer
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
A study was conducted to identify mechanisms of resistance in sunflower to the sunflower midge, Contarinia schulzi Gagné. Infestation ratings, larval counts, and damage ratings were used to quantify midge resistance in seven sunflower hybrids grown at three locations. Six of the seven hybrids possessed midge resistance. Each hybrid was further categorized with respect to infestation resistance, antibiosis, and tolerance. Two bud characteristics, percent open and size, were examined for their contribution to infestation resistance. The percentage of time that buds of each hybrid were open was negatively correlated with infestation (indicating a preference for the open characteristic). Infestations were …

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Thirty-two clinical isolates of Shiga-like toxin (SLT)-producing Escherichia coli associated with single cases or outbreaks of bloody diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis, the hemolytic uremic syndrome, or edema disease of swine were examined for multiple copies of genes belonging to the slt-I or slt-II toxin families. Five of 19 strains that were known to produce SLT-II or to hybridize to slt-II-specific probes by colony blot were found by Southern hybridization to contain two copies of toxin genes related to slt-II. The genes for two toxins closely related to slt-II were cloned from one of the isolates, Escherichia …

Gelled Diet For Screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Mass Production, David B. Taylor, Jimmy C. Bruce, Rene Garcia
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
A rearing system based on a diet gelled with Water-Lock G400, a synthetic superabsorbent (poly(2-propenamide-co-2-propenoic acid, sodium salt))( WL), was compared with the standard rearing system (liquid diet suspended in acetate fibers) for the mass production of screwworms, Cochlomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). The WL rearing system yielded 2% heavier pupae, 32% higher egg to pupa survival, and required 54% less diet and 88% less labor than the standard rearing system. Other advantages of the WL system include reduced susceptibility to suboptimal environmental conditions and labor practices, and characteristics conducive to centralization and mechanization of rearing procedures.

Solute plumes were created in an unsaturated field soil with either flux application or by leaching an initial resident distribution (see Ellsworth et al., this issue). The spatial variance of the plumes initially increased with time between the soil surface and a depth of 2.5m, within which the soil was a nearly structureless loamy sand. Below this depth, the plumes were observed to compress in the vertical direction as they moved into, and through, a region of subangular blocky structure and loam texture (between 2.5 and 4.0m depth). As the solute moved below the layer of fine texture, the plume …

Reservoir Sedimentation Studies, D C. Boudurant, R H. Livesey
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
It must be recognized that, when a reservoir is constructed on a stream, all or most of the sediment transported into the reservoir by the stream will be deposited there. With few exceptions, there is no practical method for reducing or eliminating the sediment inflow; thus it is necessary to anticipate and to provide for resulting problems. The major problem is, of course, the accumulative loss of storage capacity. Other items of importance include the distribution of the sediment with respect to various storage increments, the effect on the chemical or physical quality of the water, ecological effects, and the …

Eastern Nebraska, especially the northeastern portion, has a history of severe soil erosion, due in part to a predominance of steep slopes and highly erodible soils (12). While the average annual allowable soil loss ("T" value) for most of these soils is five tons per acre, some fields have annual soil erosion rates that exceed 100 tons per acre. The loss of topsoil is critical, of course, but erosion from cropland also results in the removal of fertilizers and pesticides, which degrades water quality.
Even though farmers are generally aware that soil erosion is a national problem, many …

Sterol Composition Of The Corn Root Lesion Nematode, Pratylenchus Agilis, And Corn Root Cultures, David J. Chitwood, William R. Lusby
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Sterols from mixed stages of the com root lesion nematode, Pratylenchus agilis, and uninfected corn root cultures were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Twenty-eight sterols were identified in P. agilis, including nine not previously detected in nematodes. The major sterols were 24-ethylcholest-22-enol, 24-ethylcholesta-5,22-dienol, 24-methy1cholestanol, 24-ethylcholestanol, isofucostanol, and 24-ethylcholesterol. The principal corn root sterols were 24-ethylcholesta-5,22-dienol, 24-methylcholesterol, 24-ethylcholesterol, isofucosterol, and cycloartenol. Therefore, the major metabolic transformation of sterols by P. agilis was saturation of the sterol nucleus. In addition, very small amounts of 4α-methylsterols were biosynthesized by P. agilis. The 4-methylation pathway is unique to nematodes and was …

Radial Distribution Of Dose, Robert Katz, Matesh N. Varma

The radial distribution of dose about the path of a heavy ion, principally from delta rays, is one of the central contributions of atomic physics to the systematization of high LET radiation effects in condensed matter, whether the detection arises in chemical, physical, or biological systems. In addition to the radial distribution of dose, we require knowledge of the response of the system to X-rays or gamma-rays or to beams of energetic electrons such that the electron slowing-down spectra from these radiations can approximate the slowing-down spectra from delta rays even at different radial distances from the ion's path. A …

Chromium dioxide is deposited as a ferromagnetic layer onto selected portions of a substrate or over the entire substrate. Chromium hexacarbonyl vapor is introduced into a vacuum deposition chamber at e.g. 10 milliTorr and oxygen is introduced at e.g. 15 to 100 milliTorr. A UV laser beam is focused onto the substrate to form the CrO2 layer photolytically. The CrO2 layer can also be deposited by RF plasma deposition. This technique can also be employed for depositing MoC2, WC2, Mo2φ3, MoO2 or WO2. Magnetic recording or memory devices are …

This content analysis of 139 programs and 2,211 characters updates and extends previous research on the way elderly people, and especially elderly women, are presented on prime-time television. Findings indicate that females and the elderly continue to be significantly underrepresented. Comparisons of elderly men and women showed patterns of traditional stereotypes, with men more likely to be depicted positively on 7 of 9 desirable traits and women more likely to be depicted negatively on 6 of the 7 undesirable traits which showed a gender difference. However, the proportional differences for specific characteristics typically were neither large nor statistically significant, suggesting …
