Kemod: A Mixed Chemical Kinetic And Equilibrium Model Of Aqueous And Solid Phase Geochemical Reactions, G. T. Yeh, G. A. Iskra, J. E. Szecsody, John M. Zachara, G. P. Streile
United States Department of Energy: Publications
This report presents the development of a mixed chemical Kinetic and Equilibrium MODel (KEMOD), in which every chemical species can be treated either as a equilibrium-controlled or as a kinetically controlled reaction. The reaction processes include aqueous complexation, adsorption/ desorption, ion exchange, precipitation/dissolution, oxidation/reduction, and acid/base reactions. Further development and modification of KEMOD can be made in: (1) inclusion of species switching solution algorithms, (2) incorporation of the effect of temperature and pressure on equilibrium and rate constants, and (3) extension to high ionic strength.

Reducing Societal Vulnerability To Drought: A Methodology, Donald A. Wilhite
Reducing Societal Vulnerability To Drought: A Methodology, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Given worldwide experience with drought during the past several decades and the magnitude of associated impacts, it is apparent that vulnerability to extended periods of water shortage is escalating. Developing a national or provincial drought policy and preparedness plan is a complicated but essential first step toward reducing societal vulnerability. Until recently, nations had devoted little effort to drought preparedness, preferring instead the reactive or crisis management approach. Presently, an increasing number of nations are pursuing a more proactive approach that emphasizes the principles of risk management and sustainable development. Because of the multitude of impacts associated with drought and …

Brown· Midrib Sorghum Silage For Midlactation Dairy Cows, R. J. Grant, S. G. Haddad, K. J. Moore, Jeffrey F. Pedersen
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Brown midrib sorghum silage was compared with alfalfa, corn, and normal sorghum silages for its effect on performance, ruminal metabolism, and digestive kinetics of Holstein dairy cows in midlactation. Twelve cows averaging 90 ± 5 DIM were assigned to one of four diets in replicated 4 X 4 Latin squares with 4-wk periods. Additionally, 3 ruminally fistulated cows (95 ± 20 DIM) were assigned to the same diets in a 3x 4 Youden square for measurement of ruminal characteristics. Diets were fed as isonitrogenous TMR that contained 65% silage (OM basis). The DMl was greater for the corn and brown …

Dissociation Quotients Of Succinic Acid In Aqueous Sodium Chloride Media To 225°C, Richard Kettler, Donald A. Palmer, David J. Wesolowski
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The first and second molal dissociation quotients of succinic acid were measured potentiometrically with a hydrogen-electrode, concentration cell. These measurements were carried out from 0 to 225"C over 25 ° intervals at five ionic strengths ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 molal (NaCl). The dissociation quotients from this and two other studies were combined and treated with empirical equations to yield the following thermodynamic quantities for the first acid dissociation equilibrium at 25°C: logK1a = -4.210±0.003; Δ H1̊a = 2.9±0.2 kJ-mol - 1 ; ΔS1̊a = -71±1 J-mol - 1 -K -1; and ΔCp̊,1a = -98±3 …

The Role Of Aidose Reductase In Diabetic Retinopathy: Prevention And Intervention Studies, W. Gerald Robinson Jr., Nora M. Laver, Marjorie F. Lou
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Diabetic retinopathy is the major ocular complication of diabetes, both in terms of incidence and irreversible visual impairment. In spite of modern procedures for strict blood glucose control (DCCT, 1993), laser treatment (ETDRS, 1991f; Aiello, 1994), vitrectomy (Gardner and Blankenship, 1994; Glaser, 1994b), and classical pituitary ablation (Kohner et al., 1976; Speakman et al., 1966; Poulsen, 1953), it is a serious threat to normal vision. It is mainly a vascular disorder, primarily involving microvessels (Garner, 1970). Retinal capillaries undergo multiple, extremely complex structural alterations in response to the unavoidable hyperglycemia of long-term diabetes. Because many of the angiopathies occur on …

Solid Waste Disposal Site Characterization Using Non-Intrusive Electromagnetic Survey Techniques And Geostatistics, Gary N. Kuhn, Wayne E. Woldt, David D. Jones, Dennis D. Schulte
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Prior to the research reported in this paper, a site-specific hydrogeologic investigation was developed for a closed solid waste facility in Eastern Nebraska using phased subsurface characterizations. Based on the findings of this prior investigation, a surface based geoelectric survey using electromagnetic induction to measure subsurface conductivity was implemented to delineate the vertical and horizontal extent of buffed waste and subsurface contamination. This technique proved to be a key non-intrusive, cost-effective element in the refinement of the second phase of the hydrogeologic investigation.
Three-dimensional ordinary kriging was used to estimate conductivity values at unsampled locations. These estimates were utilized to …

The Majority Of Yeast Upf1 Co-Localizes With Polyribosomes In The Cytoplasm, Audrey L. Atkin, Nicola Altamura, Peter Leeds, Michael R. Culbertson
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
In Saccharomyces cerevisiae the UPF1 protein is required for nonsense-mediated mRNA
decay, the accelerated turnover of mRNAs containing a nonsense mutation. Several lines
of evidence suggest that translation plays an important role in the mechanism of
nonsense mRNA decay, including a previous report that nonsense mRNAs assemble in
polyribosomes. In this study we show that UPF1 and ribosomal protein Li co-localize in
the cytoplasm and that UPF1 co-sediments with polyribosomes. To detect UPF1, three
copies of the influenza hemagglutinin epitope were placed at the C-terminus. The tagged
protein, UPF1-3EP, retains 86% (± 5%) of function. Using immunological detection, we
found …
Silver Staining For Elucidation Of The Synlophe In Trichostrongyle Nematodes, Alexander V. Khrustalev, Eric P. Hoberg
Silver Staining For Elucidation Of The Synlophe In Trichostrongyle Nematodes, Alexander V. Khrustalev, Eric P. Hoberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Staining techniques are relatively rare in the study of parasitic nematodes. A novel silver-staining method is described for elucidation of the synlophe (a system of longitudinal cuticular ridges), a character of great systematic importance among the trichostrongyloid nematodes. Ridges are stained optically black and appear in great contrast to the body of the nematode. This method augments current use of interference contrast for examination of the synlophe. Detailed studies of the configuration of the synlophe in entire specimens are possible with standard light microscopy for the first time.

The assignments of the 1H, 15N, 13CO, and 13C resonances of recombinant human basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2), a protein comprising 154 residues and with a molecular mass of 17.2 kDa, is presented based on a series of three-dimensional triple-resonance heteronuclear NMR experiments. These studies employ uniformly labeled 15N- and 15N-/13C-labeled FGF-2 with an isotope incorporation >95% for the protein expressed in E. coli. The sequence-specific backbone assignments were based primarily on the interresidue correlation of Cα, Cβ, and Hα to the backbone amide 1H …

Sign Regulation After Ladue: Examining The Evolving Limits Of First Amendment Protection, Mark Cordes
Nebraska Law Review
This article examines the evolving law of sign and billboard regulations, with particular attention to the dual concerns noted by the Court in City of Ladue v. Gilleo of restricting "too much" speech and restricting "too little." It will address three general issues surrounding the permissible limits of sign and billboard regulation. The article begins by addressing Ladue's concern regarding regulations that restrict speech too much. In particular, it examines the extent to which a municipality must accommodate signs or billboards. A second area of concern is the permissible limit of content-neutral yet underinclusive restrictions on signs and billboards. …

Radiative Transfer Of Ultrasound, Joseph A. Turner, Richard L. Weaver
Radiative Transfer Of Ultrasound, Joseph A. Turner, Richard L. Weaver
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications
A radiative transfer equation is used to model the diffuse multiple scattering of ultrasound in a medium containing discrete random scatterers. An assumption of uncorrelated phases allows one to write an equation of energy balance for the diffuse intensity. This ultrasonic radiative transfer equation contains single-scattering and propagation parameters that are calculated using the elastic wave equation. Polarization effects are included through the introduction of an elastodynamic Stokes vector which contains a longitudinal Stokes parameter and four shear Stokes parameters similar to the four Stokes parameters used in optical radiative transfer theory. The theory is applied to a statistically homogeneous, …

Radiative Transfer And Multiple Scattering Of Diffuse Ultrasound, Joseph A. Turner, Richard L. Weaver
Radiative Transfer And Multiple Scattering Of Diffuse Ultrasound, Joseph A. Turner, Richard L. Weaver
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications
A model is presented fro the multiply scattered incoherent field in a continuous polycrystalline elastic medium. Unlike a previous development based upon energy conservation considerations [J. A. Turner and R.L. Weaver, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 93, 2312 (A) (1993)] for a medium containing discrete random scatterers, the present model has been developed from the wave equation and first principles. Appropriate ensemble averaging of the wave equation leads to Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations which govern the mean Green’s function and the covariance of the Green’s function, respectively. These equations are expanded for weak heterogeneity and equations of radiative transfer are obtained. …

Papers in Biotechnology
ABSTRACT The serious shortage of human organs available for transplantation has engendered a heightened interest in the use of animal organs (xenografts) for transplantation. However, the major barrier to successful discordant xenogeneic organ transplantation is the phenomenon of hyperacute rejection. Hyperacute rejection results from the deposition of high-titer preformed antibodies that activate serum complement on the luminal surface of the vascular endothelium, leading to vessel occlusion and graft failure within minutes to hours. Although endogenous membrane-associated complement inhibitors normally protect endothelial cells from autologous complement, they are species restricted and thus confer limited resistance to activated xenogeneic complement. To address …
Imbibition Response Of Winter Wheat To Water-Filled Pore Space, Guillermo A. Studdert, Wallace Wilhelm, James F. Power
Imbibition Response Of Winter Wheat To Water-Filled Pore Space, Guillermo A. Studdert, Wallace Wilhelm, James F. Power
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Reduced temperature and increased bulk density associated with conservation tillage systems cause lower seed germination, seedling emergence, and early growth rates resulting in reduced plant stands. Prediction of the influence of soil condition on seed imbibition through simple soil measurements would help make agronomic decisions such as planting date and/or density. Our objectives were to evaluate the influence of soil water-filled pore space on winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seed imbibition and to assess the possibility of describing the relationship through simple mathematical models. We measured the rate of water uptake by heat-killed wheat seeds at three levels of …
A Study Of Euplotes Crassus Telomere Proteins And Related Genes, John Scott Perez
A Study Of Euplotes Crassus Telomere Proteins And Related Genes, John Scott Perez
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A novel PCR technique used to amplify Euplotes crassus macronuclear chromosomes was developed to provide scientific proof that an Euplotes crassus 1.0 kb gene is not genetically related to an Oxytricha nova 1.8 kb β-telomere protein gene. Theories and experimental procedures associated with the development of this PCR technique were the product of research that will have a profound impact on future studies of telomere protein genes and telomeric DNA in a multitude of eukaryotic cells. The hypothesis that a β-telomere protein does not exist in Euplotes crassus was supported by the result of this study.
Expression of the recombinant …

Anisotropy And Magneto-Optical Properties Of Sputtered Co/Ni Multilayer Thin Films, Y.B. Zhang, John A. Woollam, Z.S. Shan, J.X. Shen, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
Several series of sputtered Co/Ni multilayer thin films have been investigated. The volume and interface contributions to the magnetic anisotropy were determined from magnetization measurements, and the interface anisotropy, Ki= 0.23 ± 0.03 erg/cm2, was found to support perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The anisotropy constant, K, increased with the Au buffer layer thickness, indicating the buffer layer was crucial to the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The polar Kerr rotation and coercivity as a function of temperature, and room temperature magneto-optical figure of merit are presented in this paper.
