Signature-Systems And Tonal Types In The Fourteenth-Century French Chanson, Peter M. Lefferts Jan 1995

Signature-Systems And Tonal Types In The Fourteenth-Century French Chanson, Peter M. Lefferts

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

Beyond the standard and familiar theoretical instruction materials on notation and mensuration, on mode and hexachord, and on the rules of two-part counterpoint, information and insight about the techniques of musical composition in the later Middle Ages are hard to come by. From a modern vantage point, medieval music theory leaves many of the questions most interesting to us unanswered. And for our part, too, analysts of chansons and motets have yet to agree on many basic notions about how this music works, and therefore what is most necessary to talk about. It is symptomatic of this state of affairs …

4. Multicultural Family Assessment, Jane Close Conoley, Lorrie E. Bryant Jan 1995

4. Multicultural Family Assessment, Jane Close Conoley, Lorrie E. Bryant

Family Assessment

Assessing individuals who are members of minority or recent immigrant groups creates special and critical challenges for psychologists committed to equitable practices (Dana, 1993). As previous chapters in this volume have shown, the goal of accomplishing valid family assessments is daunting in its own right. Culturally sensitive procedures of family evaluation are, perhaps, even more difficult to conceptualize and administer.

This chapter will examine several issues relevant to expertise in assessing families whose cultural framework differs from the majority of the u.s. population. The topics to be covered include:

1. What is cultural sensitivity?
2. What are the important constructs …

Helping First-Year Students Study: Part Ii, Better Lasere Erickson Jan 1995

Helping First-Year Students Study: Part Ii, Better Lasere Erickson

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Few freshmen can keep pace with their courses if they study only an hour between classes and if their only study activities are reading, highlighting, and copying over notes. Faculty expect more, and those who teach freshmen play an important role both in making expectations about college work explicit and in helping freshmen develop their study skills. What, then, might we do to get students to spend more time studying and to study in more productive ways?

Filtration Rates Of The Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha) On Natural Seston From Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, David L. Fanslow, Thomas F. Nalepa, Gregory A. Lang Jan 1995

Filtration Rates Of The Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha) On Natural Seston From Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, David L. Fanslow, Thomas F. Nalepa, Gregory A. Lang

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Filtration rates of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) on natural seston from two different regions in Saginaw Bay were determined on a monthly basis from April to October in 1992 and 1993. The two regions represent contrasting trophic conditions, with the inner bay more eutrophic than the outer bay. Mean filtration rate was 16.2 mL/mg/h (range 4.0 to 40.7 mL/mg/h) over the entire 2-year period. Filtration rates on seston from the inner bay were significantly lower than rates on seston from the outer bay in 1992, but no differences were apparent in 1993. Lower rates were attributed to …

Dislocated Emblems: Recent Work By Warren Rosser, Daphne A. Deeds Jan 1995

Dislocated Emblems: Recent Work By Warren Rosser, Daphne A. Deeds

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Though emerging artists often dazzle us with brash or daring work, the artist at mid-career has reached a level of consistency and retrospection that delivers the work from facile solutions. With a career that now spans more than twenty-five years, Warren Rosser's work has evolved into the kind of subtle dialogue between carefully honed technique and highly articulated personal vocabulary that is achieved only with the diligence and insight of maturity. "Dislocated Emblems" is a watershed of Rosser's long commitment to his art. These new works are the culmination of an intensely productive year when Rosser's aesthetic, philosophical, and emotional …

From Statues To Sculpture: Selections From The Collection Of The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery And Sculpture Garden, Daphne A. Deeds

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The title of this exhibition, From Statues to Sculpture, su~gests the evolution of three-dimensional art, from 19th-century statues that inspire moral fortitude, celebrate historic events and evoke spiritual enlightenment, to sculpture that questions those verities and poses new definitions of reality. From Statues to Sculpture comprises 20 works dating from 1860 to 1988. This selection from the permanent collection of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery represents a diversity of issues and developments in American sculptural history, from historic monuments to abstract figuration, from images of landscape to architectural forms.

Sculpture is one of the oldest visual art media. It …

Isolation And Characterization Of A B-D-Glucuronidase-Producing Strain Of Escherichia Coli Serotype O157:H7 In The United States, Peggy S. Hayes, Kristina Blom, Peter Feng, Jay Lewis, Nancy A. Strockbine, Bala Swaminathan Jan 1995

Isolation And Characterization Of A B-D-Glucuronidase-Producing Strain Of Escherichia Coli Serotype O157:H7 In The United States, Peggy S. Hayes, Kristina Blom, Peter Feng, Jay Lewis, Nancy A. Strockbine, Bala Swaminathan

United States Public Health Resources

A phenotypic variant of Escherichia coli serotype O157:H7 (G5101) was isolated from a patient with bloody diarrhea. Strain G5101 does not ferment sorbitol but is β-D-glucuronidase and urease positive. Serotyping and colony hybridization using a serotype-specific DNA probe confirmed that the isolate was O157:H7. G5101 produces Shiga-like toxins I and II and contains an eae gene that is highly conserved in the O157:H7 serotype. This strain would have been missed by laboratories that screen for the sorbitol-negative, β-D-glucuronidase- negative phenotype in isolating E. coli O157:H7 from clinical and food specimens.

Dissociation Quotient Of Benzoic Acid In Aqueous Sodium Chloride Media To 250°C, Richard Kettler, David J. Wesolowski, Donald A. Palmer Jan 1995

Dissociation Quotient Of Benzoic Acid In Aqueous Sodium Chloride Media To 250°C, Richard Kettler, David J. Wesolowski, Donald A. Palmer

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The dissociation quotient of benzoic acid was determined potentiometrically in a concentration cell fitted with hydrogen electrodes. The hydrogen ion molality of benzoic acid/benzoate solutions was measured relative to a standard aqueous IiCI solution at seven temperatures from 5 to 250°C and at seven ionic strengths ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 molal (NaCI). The molal dissociation quotients and selected literature data were fitted in the isocoulombic (all anionic) form by a six-term equation. This treatment yielded the following thermodynamic quantities for the acid dissociation equilibrium at 25°C and 1 bar: log Ka = -4.206±0.006, ΔHå=0.3±0.3 kJ-mol-1 …

Coyotes In Urban Areas: A Status Report, Jan E. Loven Jan 1995

Coyotes In Urban Areas: A Status Report, Jan E. Loven

Coyotes in the Southwest: A Compendium of Our Knowledge (Symposium Proceedings, 1995)

Coyotes (Canis latrans) occur within the city limits of most urban areas in Texas, and the Incidence of human X coyote interactions appears to be increasing in recent years. The major damage caused by coyotes in urban areas has been depredation on pets (primarily) and to other animals (e.g. ducks). Direct control of such problem coyotes is often hampered by city/state regulations and/or concern from local officials about negative publicity.

Review Of Painting Texas History To 1900 By Sam Deshong Ratcliffe, Pamela Walker Jan 1995

Review Of Painting Texas History To 1900 By Sam Deshong Ratcliffe, Pamela Walker

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In discussing paintings about the Texas Revolution, Ratcliffe is at his most analytic. Generally, his text is more descriptive than analytic, reading much like an exhibit guide on a museum wall. Still, the work is interesting and informative, and it provides a basis for more comprehensive and critical studies of the relation between a particular period of Texas history and its art.

Review Of The Flag In American Indian Art By Toby Herbst And Joel Kopp, Russel Lawrence Barsh Jan 1995

Review Of The Flag In American Indian Art By Toby Herbst And Joel Kopp, Russel Lawrence Barsh

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The public appetite for American Indian crafts and artistic motifs can be traced back to the early part of this century, the same period of American cultural nativism that inspired the Arts and Crafts movement in midwestern industrial cities and a flight of young painters and sculptors to fledgling artists' colonies in the American Southwest. Before the Depression put an end to this bonanza for nativeborn talent, American Indians had been able to stake a large claim in media as diverse as miniature totem poles, beadwork, and basketry. While museums scoured the countryside for medicine bundles, pipes, and headdresses, the …

Faculty Development Programs At Research Universities: Implications For Senior Faculty Renewal, Arthur L. Crawley Jan 1995

Faculty Development Programs At Research Universities: Implications For Senior Faculty Renewal, Arthur L. Crawley

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This article examines the research findings from that portion of the National Survey on Senior Faculty Renewal which pertains to the faculty development programs available to senior faculty at research universities in support of their career development and renewal. Survey respondents were coordinators and directors of faculty development programs and selected academic affairs administrators with faculty development responsibilities at their respective institutions. In general, the findings reveal a high level of support for the traditional approaches to faculty development for senior faculty in the context of their teaching and research. However, the findings suggest that faculty development approaches that are …

Surveillance Of Life Insurer Solvency: A Comparison Of Stock And The Multiple Scenario Cash Flow Financial Stress Tests, Ronald W. Spahr, Paul L. Gronewoller Jan 1995

Surveillance Of Life Insurer Solvency: A Comparison Of Stock And The Multiple Scenario Cash Flow Financial Stress Tests, Ronald W. Spahr, Paul L. Gronewoller

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

The solvency of life insurance companies may be threatened by interest rate risk when the maturities of assets and liabilities are mismatched. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners' (NAIC) multiple scenario cashflow test (MSCFT) and the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) net portfolio value model (stock) approaches to financial stress tests are illustrated and analyzed with respect to their capacity to estimate the impact of potential changes in interest rates on life insurance company capital and surplus. Each approach is illustrated with the assets and liabilities of three hypothetical life insurance company capital levels (high, average, and below average) and …

Media Components Influence Viral Gene Expression Assays In Human Fetal Astrocyte Cultures, Micheline Mccarthy, Charles Wood, Larisa Fedoseyeva, Scott R. Whittemore

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

In vitro neurovirological studies of viral infectivity or viral gene expression may be confounded by the mulHple neural cell types and/or fibrob last contamination present in early passage cultures prepared from dissociated human central nervous system (eNS) tissue. We have developed highly enriched astrocyte cultures for neurovirological study by culturing in a serum-free defined medium, 816, supplemented with basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2). Subculture in this medium selects against fibroblast proliferation and favors sustained proliferation of a highly enriched glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-positive cell population. These astrocytes support productive replication of cytomegalovirus (CMV) and transient expression of transfected CMVand …

Six natural history institutions contributed video and other images to produce a single multimedia exhibit about famous paleontology sites throughout the United States. In Mesozoic Monsters. Mammals and Magnolias users can view videos of the original excavation of each of the sites and also play computer games relating to each location. This project provides a model for how collaboration among museums can reduce the cost of multimedia exhibits while improving quality and making them available to wider audiences.

G95-1236 Developing Beef Quality Assurance, Dicky D. Griffin, Louis Perino, Don Hudson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This Neb-Guide gives guidelines for developing a feedlot beef quality assurance program.

The displacement of people from agriculture into other areas of employment has broken the relationship between most consumers and producers. The consumer's lack of knowledge about agricultural production coupled with concern for misuse of technological advances in agriculture has created great concern for the safety of their food supply. Consumers are worried that their food will be contaminated by antibiotics, hormones, and agricultural chemicals. Recently, bacterial contamination of beef has been added to their fears. These concerns, combined with diet and health concerns for eating red meat and …

Rp489 Impacting Private Sector Policy For Families, Georgia L. Stevens Jan 1995

Rp489 Impacting Private Sector Policy For Families, Georgia L. Stevens

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Who is caring for families(*) these days? Historically, we've had the notion that families needed to be self-sufficient. But, today, dramatic changes in family structure and family member's employment have shifted this thinking. As family policy educator and researcher Shirley Zimmerman (personal communication, April 26, 1993) states,

"increasingly it is recognized that the well-being of families is dependent on the functioning of other societal institutions, such as government and business. For this reason, government is taking an expanding interest in the role of the private sector, namely business and industry, for ensuring the health and economic security of workers and …
