Results Of A Non-Lethal Survey And Report Provided To The New Mexico Legislature, J. Alan May Jan 1996

Results Of A Non-Lethal Survey And Report Provided To The New Mexico Legislature, J. Alan May

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 17th (1996)

Social and political pressures affect decision making regarding wildlife damage management issues tremendously. In fact, these areas are included in the Animal Damage Control decision model outlined in the programmatic Environmental Impact Statement. Growing concern regarding pain and suffering of animals trapped by ADC Specialists prompted two actions by the 41st Legislature of the State of New Mexico in 1994. The legislature directed New Mexico ADC not to spend over three-quarters of its $304,000 appropriation on lethal methods. The legislature also passed a memorial bill requesting the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, in cooperation with the U.S. Fish …

Development Of A Bovine X Chromosome Linkage Group And Painting Probes To Assess Cattle, Sheep, And Goat X Chromosome Segment Homologies, F. Abel Ponce De León, Sakthikumar Ambady, Gregory A. Hawkins, Steven M. Kappes, Michael D. Bishop, James M. Robl, Craig W. Beattie Jan 1996

Development Of A Bovine X Chromosome Linkage Group And Painting Probes To Assess Cattle, Sheep, And Goat X Chromosome Segment Homologies, F. Abel Ponce De León, Sakthikumar Ambady, Gregory A. Hawkins, Steven M. Kappes, Michael D. Bishop, James M. Robl, Craig W. Beattie

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The X chromosome linkage group is conserved in placental mammals. However, X chromosome morphological differences, due to internal chromosome rearrangements, exist among mammalian species. We have developed bovine chromosome painting probes for Xp and Xq to assess segment homologies between the submetacentric bovine X chromosome and the acrocentric sheep and goat X chromosomes. These painting probes and their corresponding DNA libraries were developed by chromosome micromanipulation, DNA micropurification, microcloning, and PCR amplification. The bovine Xp painting probe identified an interstitially located homologous segment in the sheep and goat Xq region, most probably resulting from chromosome inversion. Ten type II (microsatellite) …

G96-1280 Drinking Water: Iron And Manganese, David L. Varner, Sharon Skipton, Delynn Hay, Paul J. Jasa

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses recommended practices to manage iron and manganese in a domestic water supply. Iron and manganese are non-hazardous elements that can be a nuisance in a water supply. Iron and manganese are chemically similar and cause similar problems. Iron is the most frequent of the two contaminants in water supplies; manganese is typically found in iron-bearing water.

The Ideology Of Cather’S Catholic Progressivism: Death Comes For The Archbishop, Guy J. Reynolds Jan 1996

The Ideology Of Cather’S Catholic Progressivism: Death Comes For The Archbishop, Guy J. Reynolds

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927), Cather’s fiction about the Catholic mission in the Hispanic Southwest, is a historical novel, but one that approaches its subject in an elusive, teasing manner. The text incorporates the new primitivism, carrying with it a tolerant receptivity to Indian culture, racial heterogeneity, and Catholicism--all of which are aspects of American culture that narrow definitions of American progress would have excluded. Nonetheless, Cather cannot finally combine, incorporate, or reconcile her own perspectives on progress, and her open text shades into an evasive text

A Methodology For Drought Preparedness, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 1996

A Methodology For Drought Preparedness, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought is a normal, recurrent feature of climate that affects virtually all countries to some degree. The number of drought-induced natural disasters has grown significantly since the 1960s, largely as a result of increasing vulnerability to extended periods of precipitation deficiency rather than be-cause of an increase in the frequency of meteorological droughts. This increase in drought-induced natural disasters has resulted in a considerable growth of interest in drought mitigation and prepar-edness worldwide. The purpose of a national preparedness plan is to reduce societal vulnerability to drought through the adoption of preventive, anticipatory policies and programs. This paper de-scribes a …

8: Reducing The Impacts Of Drought: Progress Toward Risk Management, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 1996

8: Reducing The Impacts Of Drought: Progress Toward Risk Management, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Images of malnutrition, famine and a degraded African landscape were commonplace during the 1980s and appear likely to continue well into the 1990s and beyond. Glantz (1987) has shown that drought has hindered the ability of much of sub-Saharan Africa to achieve a sustained level of agricultural production and, as a result, has retarded progress toward economic development. Linkages between drought and economic development, although most obvious in Africa, exist throughout much of the developing world.

A Binding Tie: Supportive Communication Of Family Kinkeepers, Margaret S. Leach, Dawn O. Braithwaite Jan 1996

A Binding Tie: Supportive Communication Of Family Kinkeepers, Margaret S. Leach, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Families are an important source of social support, and little scholarship exists regarding how family members stay in touch and provide support for one another. Kinkeepers are said to provide support and keep family members informed about one another, yet there has been little research on who family kinkeepers are and how they communicate and enact this role. Two studies were undertaken. The first study used surveys to provide demographic data on kinkeepers and to ascertain information on their activities. The second study used diaries and interviews to document the activities of a set of kinkeepers and to describe outcomes …

Microbial Reduction Of Crystalline Iron(Iii) Oxides: Influence Of Oxide Surface Area And Potential For Cell Growth, Eric E. Roden, John M. Zachara Jan 1996

Microbial Reduction Of Crystalline Iron(Iii) Oxides: Influence Of Oxide Surface Area And Potential For Cell Growth, Eric E. Roden, John M. Zachara

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Quantitative aspects of microbial crystalline iron- (III) oxide reduction were examined using a dissimilatory iron(III) oxide-reducing bacterium (Shewanella alga strain BrY). The initial rate and long-term extent of reduction of a range of synthetic iron(III) oxides were linearly correlated with oxide surface area. Oxide reduction rates reached an asymptote at cell concentrations in excess of ≈1 x 109/m2 of oxide surface. Experiments with microbially reduced goethite that had been washed with pH 5 sodium acetate to remove adsorbed Fe(II) suggested that formation of a Fe(II) surface phase (adsorbed or precipitated) limited the extent of iron(III) oxide …

G97-1322 High Risk Youth, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1996

G97-1322 High Risk Youth, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide defines the relationship between adolescence and high risk behaviors, helps parent and adolescent identify external and internal assets and suggests parent strategies for promoting and increasing those assets.

American youth today are often considered to be in a state of crisis. Approximately half of all adolescents are at moderate to high risk of engaging in one or more self-destructive behaviors, including unsafe sex, teenage pregnancy and childbearing; drug and alcohol abuse; under achievement, failure, or dropping out of school; and delinquent or criminal behaviors. Many of these problem behaviors are interrelated. Some of these behaviors are related to …

Transparent And Opaque: Watercolors From The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery And Sculpture Garden, Daphne A. Deeds, George W. Neubert Jan 1996

Transparent And Opaque: Watercolors From The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery And Sculpture Garden, Daphne A. Deeds, George W. Neubert

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The history of art, like many academic disciplines, imposes certain biases on our perceptions. Because the Renaissance captured the imagination of the Western mind, oil painting and bronze sculpture prevail as the most respected media. This acclaim may be appropriate, but in lauding these traditional art forms, other media have not always received the attention they deserve. In the U.S., watercolor, a medium alternately referred to as painting and drawing, is often still identified as the domain of social young women and amateurs, as was the case in the 19th century. But the history of watercolor painting begins impressively with …

The Age-Specific Prevalence Of Plasmodium Falciparum In Migrants To Irian Jaya Is Not Attributable To Agglutinating Antibody Repertoire, John C. Reeder, Kathleen M. Davern, J. Kevin Baird, Stephen J. Rogerson, Graham V. Brown Jan 1996

The Age-Specific Prevalence Of Plasmodium Falciparum In Migrants To Irian Jaya Is Not Attributable To Agglutinating Antibody Repertoire, John C. Reeder, Kathleen M. Davern, J. Kevin Baird, Stephen J. Rogerson, Graham V. Brown

United States Public Health Resources

Previous observations have shown that individuals migrating from a malaria free area to a malaria endemic region in North Eastern Irian Jaya quickly acquire anti-parasite immunity, in an age-dependent manner. Sera from migrants and long-term residents in this area were examined for their ability to agglutinate a range of Plasmodium falciparum isolates and to disrupt erythrocyte rosettes. Antibody responses to merozoite surface protein 2 (MSP2) and ring-infected erythrocyte surface antigen (RESA) were also determined. The range of isolates agglutinated by sera from the migrants approached that seen in long-term residents. No difference was found between migrant adults and children in …

Beauty Enhances Ritual, Jennifer Wearden Jan 1996

Beauty Enhances Ritual, Jennifer Wearden

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Torah, that is the five books of Moses - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy - and the Law they contain, emanate from God. This is the Word of God revealed to the Israelites and recorded in the Scriptures. It is impossible to exaggerate the importance of the Torah for a Jewish congregation, so it is not surprising that the most dominant feature of a synagogue is the Ark of the Law in which the Torah scrolls are kept. This may be a large, elaborate structure or a simple cupboard or recess but there is always a decorative curtain …

Ceremonial Textiles Of The Mardi Gras Indians, Ann Dupont Jan 1996

Ceremonial Textiles Of The Mardi Gras Indians, Ann Dupont

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The appliqued, beaded, and pieced textile sections or "patches" that are combined to form the ceremonial costumes of the Mardi Gras Indians of New Orleans, Louisiana are widely considered to be one of the best examples of African-American folk: art in North America. Created in secret by black male gang members, these works of indigenous art are rarely seen outside the culturally isolated black neighborhoods.

The black Indian masking tradition sprang from a myriad of African-American heritage and nineteenth century experience in creole Louisiana The ritualistic combination of dance, music, chanting, and use of ceremonial textiles is still relatively mysterious …

Dukes, Janet B. Payeur, Jack C. Rhyan, Dennis A. Saari, Terry L. Whiting, Susan H. Wilson, Jerald L. Jarnagin

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Using the isolation of Mycobacterium bovis as the reference standard, this study evaluated the sensitivity, specificity and kappa statistic of gross pathology (abattoir postmortem inspection), histopathology, and parallel or series combinations of the two for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in 430 elk and red deer. Two histopathology interpretations were evaluated: histopathology I, where the presence of lesions compatible with tuberculosis was considered positive, and histopathology II, where lesions compatible with tuberculosis or a select group of additional possible diagnoses were considered positive. In the 73 animals from which M. bovis was isolated, gross lesions of tuberculosis were most often in …

Role Of The Escherichia Coli Fadr Regulator In Stasis Survival And Growth Phase-Dependent Expression Of The Uspa, Fad, And Fab Genes, Anne Farewell, Alfredo A. Diez, Concetta C. Dirusso, Thomas Nyström Jan 1996

Role Of The Escherichia Coli Fadr Regulator In Stasis Survival And Growth Phase-Dependent Expression Of The Uspa, Fad, And Fab Genes, Anne Farewell, Alfredo A. Diez, Concetta C. Dirusso, Thomas Nyström

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The increased expression of the uspA gene of Escherichia coli is an essential part of the cell’s response to growth arrest. We demonstrate that stationary-phase activation of the uspA promoter is in part dependent on growth phase-dependent inactivation or repression of the FadR regulator. Transcription of uspA is derepressed during exponential growth in fadR null mutants or by including the fatty acid oleate in the growth medium of FadR1 cells. The results of DNA footprinting analysis show that FadR binds downstream of the uspA promoter in the noncoding region. Thus, uspA is a member of the fadR regulon. All …

Manipulation Of Microbial Protein Degradation In The Rumen: Development Of The "Smugglin Concept" To Control Protein Digestion, Humberto Madeira, Mark Morrison Jan 1996

Manipulation Of Microbial Protein Degradation In The Rumen: Development Of The "Smugglin Concept" To Control Protein Digestion, Humberto Madeira, Mark Morrison

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

It has been estimated that as much as 25% of the protein fed to grazing and forage-fed animals is wasted due to its rapid degradation by the rumen microorganisms. Therefore. from an economic and environmental perspective, the nitrogen cycle of intensive livestock systems could be managed more effectively. Compounds such as ionophores can reduce ruminal ammonia production, but their anti-bacterial effects are too broad for its widespread use with grazing and forage-fed livestock. Another strategy to manipulate the activities of rumen bacteria responsible for protein degradation is the "smugglin concept". The "smugglin concept" involves the selective inhibition of microorganisms by …

Cellulose Adherence Factors In Ruminococcus Albus, Randall Pegden, Mark Morrison Jan 1996

Cellulose Adherence Factors In Ruminococcus Albus, Randall Pegden, Mark Morrison

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Grazing and forage-fed animals depend upon the rumen microorganisms’ ability to breakdown polysaccharides present in the leaf and stems of plants. The rate and extent of this breakdown has a major impact on animal nutrition, therefore understanding the mechanics of this process offers the potential to optimize and further improve animal performance. The limited published studies to-date suggest that: 1) colonization and adherence by some rumen bacteria are specific in nature and: 2) adherence can be modified by nutrients and growth conditions, such as ruminal pH. Better understanding and future improvements of fiber digestion in the rumen will be afforded …

Use Of Cell Culture To Study Muscle Growth In Beef Cattle, Timothy Woods, Carol Smith, Steven J. Jones Jan 1996

Use Of Cell Culture To Study Muscle Growth In Beef Cattle, Timothy Woods, Carol Smith, Steven J. Jones

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Muscle growth is the primary objective of meat animal livestock producers and represents a major source of amino acids and energy within the animal. Endogenous and exogenous factors that impinge on muscle cell development may influence the animal throughout its life cycle. In the adult animal, treatment with hormones, such as anabolic steroids or insulin, can affect muscle metabolism. Attempting to determine a compound's effects on muscle cell development and metabolism can be obscured in animal trials, since other organs and tissues are altering the environment.

Muscle cell culture provides a research tool to determine the direct effects of a …
