Bacterial Diseases (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), Milton Friend Dec 1999

Bacterial Diseases (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), Milton Friend

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Diseases caused by bacteria are a more common cause of mortality in wild birds than are those caused by viruses. In addition to infection, some bacteria cause disease as a result of potent toxins that they produce. Bacteria of the genus Clostridium are responsible for more wild bird deaths than are other disease agents. Clostridium botulinum, which causes avian botulism, is primarily a form of food poisoning and it is included within the section on biotoxins (see Chapter 38). Other Clostridium sp. that colonize intestinal tissues produce toxins that cause severe hemorrhaging of the intestine, thus leading to tissue …

Viral Diseases (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), Douglas E. Docherty

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Historically, viral diseases have not been recognized as major causes of illness and death in North American wild birds. Until relatively recently, this may have been due to inadequate technology to culture and identify these organisms. Unlike bacteria, viruses are too small to be seen under the light microscope and they cannot be grown on artificial media. Nevertheless, studies of infectious diseases caused by viruses have often predated discovery of the causative agents by many years as evidenced by smallpox immunizations being used centuries before that virus was identified. The isolations of a tobacco mosaic virus in 1892 and foot …

Melanoma Chondroitin Sulphate Proteoglycan Regulates Cell Spreading Through Cdc42, Ack-1 And P130Cas, Kathryn M. Eisenmann, James B. Mccarthy, Melanie A. Simpson, Patricia J. Keely, Jun-Lin Guan, Kouichi Tachibana, Louis Lim, Ed Manser, Leo T. Furcht, Joji Iida

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Melanoma chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan (MCSP) is a cell-surface antigen that has been implicated in the growth and invasion of melanoma tumors. Although this antigen is expressed early in melanoma progression, its biological function is unknown. MCSP can stimulate the integrin-α4β1-mediated adhesion and spreading of melanoma cells. Here we show that stimulated MCSP recruits tyrosine- phosphorylated p130cas, an adaptor protein important in tumor cell motility and invasion. MCSP stimulation also results in a pronounced activation and recruitment of the Rho-family GTPase Cdc42. MCSP-induced spreading of melanoma cells is dependent upon active Cdc42, a Cdc42-associated tyrosine kinase (Ack-1) and tyrosine phosphorylation of …

The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Inhibits Programmed Cell Death, Janice Ciacci-Zanella, Melissa Stone, Gail A. Henderson, Clinton J. Jones Dec 1999

The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Inhibits Programmed Cell Death, Janice Ciacci-Zanella, Melissa Stone, Gail A. Henderson, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Although viral gene expression occurs in the peripheral nervous system during acute infection, bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) gene expression is extinguished, many neurons survive, and latency ensues. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latency-related (LR) RNA, which is alternatively spliced in trigeminal ganglia during acute infection (L. Devireddy and C. Jones, J. Virol. 72:7294–7301, 1998). A subset of neurons express a protein encoded by the LR gene and the LR protein (LRP) is associated with cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (Cdk2)/cyclin complexes during productive infection (Y. Jiang, A. Hossain, M. T. Winkler, T. Holt, A. Doster, and C. …

Rkky Interactions Between Nanomagnets Of Arbitrary Shape, Ralph Skomski Nov 1999

Rkky Interactions Between Nanomagnets Of Arbitrary Shape, Ralph Skomski

Ralph Skomski Publications

The RKKY interaction between well-separated magnetic particles in a nonmagnetic metallic matrix is calculated. It turns out that the net interaction can be mapped onto an RKKY interaction between two point-like effective moments. The effective moments exhibit a strongly oscillating dependence on the particle's size, shape, and orientation, but their magnitudes are governed by scaling laws. As a rule, magnetostatic interactions tend to suppress the RKKY effect in particles larger than about 1 nm. Surface roughness leaves the effective-moment picture unaltered but tends to yield a moderate reduction of the effective moments. The results are discussed in the context of …

Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Fept:Sio2 Granular Thin Films, C.P. Luo, David J. Sellmyer Nov 1999

Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Fept:Sio2 Granular Thin Films, C.P. Luo, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Nanocomposite FePt:SiO2 films have been fabricated by annealing the as-deposited FePt/SiO2 multilayers at temperatures from 450 to 650 °C. These films consist of high-anisotropy tetragonal L10 FePt particles embedded in a SiO2 matrix. The structural and magnetic properties of these films were investigated. We have found that coercivity and grain size are highly dependent on the annealing temperature and SiO2 concentration. Films with coercivities in the range from 2 to 8 kOe and grain sizes of 10 nm or less were obtained. These films have considerable potential as high-density magnetic recording media.

Fully Biologically Active In Vitro Transcripts Of The Eriophyid Mite-Transmitted Wheat Streak Mosaic Tritimovirus, Il-Ryong Choi, Roy C. French, Gary L. Hein, Drake C. Stenger

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Infectious RNA of wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) has been produced using a full-length cDNA clone as a template for in vitro transcription with SP6 RNA polymerase. Infectivity was dependent on the use of template plasmid DNA that had not undergone spontaneous rearrangement during amplification in Escherichia coli. The presence of WSMV in systemically infected wheat plants inoculated with in vitro transcripts was confirmed by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction of the WSMV P3 gene and by accumulation of WSMV coat protein as detected by immunoblotting. Maintenance of the full-length WSMV cDNA in the high copy number plasmid pUC18 was problematic …

Azidothymidine And Interferon-Α Induce Apoptosis In Herpesvirus-Associated Lymphomas, Richard K. Lee, Jian-Ping Cai, Vadim Deyev, Parkash Gill, Lisa Cabral, Charles Wood, Ram Agarwal, Wenle Xia, Lawrence Boise, Eckhard Podack, William Harrington Jr. Nov 1999

Azidothymidine And Interferon-Α Induce Apoptosis In Herpesvirus-Associated Lymphomas, Richard K. Lee, Jian-Ping Cai, Vadim Deyev, Parkash Gill, Lisa Cabral, Charles Wood, Ram Agarwal, Wenle Xia, Lawrence Boise, Eckhard Podack, William Harrington Jr.

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Lymphoproliferative diseases that occur in immunocompromised patients are frequently associated with herpesviruses. These patients often fare poorly after treatment with conventional chemotherapy. We reported previously that patients with AIDS-related Burkitt’s lymphoma (BL) responded to parenteral azidothymidine (AZT) and IFN-α. We found that EBV-positive lymphoma cells derived from these patients cultured with AZT express CD95 and undergo apoptosis. AZT-mediated apoptosis was caspase dependent and occurred despite Fas receptor blockade. In contrast, EBV-negative lymphomas were resistant to AZT-induced apoptosis, as were EBV-positive lymphomas that expressed high levels of bcl-2. Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) cell lines infected with human herpesvirus type 8 required …

Public Trust And Confidence In The Courts: What Public Opinion Surveys Mean To Judges, David B. Rottman, Alan Tomkins Oct 1999

Public Trust And Confidence In The Courts: What Public Opinion Surveys Mean To Judges, David B. Rottman, Alan Tomkins

Alan Tomkins Publications

In August 1998 a comprehensive national survey added to the growing mass of information on how the public perceives the state courts. The “Perceptions of the U.S. Justice System,” commissioned by the American Bar Association, relied on telephone interviews of 1,000 American adults selected at random. The respondents were asked for their opinions about “the justice system,” lawyers, judges, law enforcement and the courts. The findings from the ABA survey were optimistic relative to most of the previous surveys. Public confidence in the courts relative to other major institutions seemed higher, and experience with courts appeared to promote higher rather …

Final Report: Nebraska Child Support Collection And Disbursement System Implementation Project, Alan Tomkins, Nancy C. Shank

Alan Tomkins Publications

In June, 1999, the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center (PPC) was asked by the Executive Board of the Nebraska Legislature to undertake a study of child support issues. Specifically, the PPC was asked to recommend how Nebraska can preserve existing strengths and reduce or eliminate weakness in its child support customer service system as the state complies with a federal mandate and develops a centralized State Disbursement Unit (SDU) for the receipting and disbursement of child support payments.

In order to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of the present customer service system in Nebraska, as well as learn …

A Model Job Training Program For Summer Youth: Library Interns At Grambling State University A. C. Lewis Memorial Library, Grambling, Louisiana, Sally Carroll, Sandy Stokley

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

A six-week university library intern program sponsored by the Job Training Partnership Act investigated the impact on 12 economically disadvantaged young persons facing nationally recognized problems pertaining to inadequate reading and math skills, work ethics, job skills, and motivation to complete school. Participants, predominantly (92%) African-American high school students, worked at Grambling State University, an historically black university, under predominantly (85%) African-American supervisors. Interns received academic enrichment, work experience, and life skills, primarily through pre-testing, classroom training, orientations by departmental supervisor, "hands-on" group projects, written assignments, daily reviews, and post-testing. Statistical data verify recommendations in the literature that job training …

Cotter, Michael R. Thylin, Leon Epstein, Jennifer Swartz, Robin B. Shepard, Xiaojuan Liu, Adeline Nukuna, Howard E. Gendelman

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Chemokine receptors pivotal for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in lymphocytes and macrophages (CCR3, CCR5, and CXCR4) are expressed on neural cells (microglia, astrocytes, and/or neurons). It is these cells which are damaged during progressive HIV-1 infection of the central nervous system. We theorize that viral coreceptors could effect neural cell damage during HIV-1-associated dementia (HAD) without simultaneously affecting viral replication. To these ends, we studied the ability of diverse viral strains to affect intracellular signaling and apoptosis of neurons, astrocytes, and monocyte-derived macrophages. Inhibition of cyclic AMP, activation of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate, and apoptosis were induced by diverse …

Modeling Of Solid Phase Detonations, C. Richter, Hendrik J. Viljoen, N. F. J. Van Rensburg Sep 1999

Modeling Of Solid Phase Detonations, C. Richter, Hendrik J. Viljoen, N. F. J. Van Rensburg

Papers in Reaction Kinetics

In contrast to conventional explosives which constitute rapid decomposition of the molecular structure acconlpanied by the release of large volumes of gaseous products, heterogeneous mixtures in the SHS realm react by progression of a thermal wave at velocities far below the speed of sound in such mixtures. Interestingly, ultrafast solid phase reactions can be initiated under the right conditions. A shock wave compresses the solid mixture to densities well beyond the theoretical mean ambient density (TMD) and compression becomes the major form of preheating. In addition, elastic potential energy is pumped into the lattice structure to induce severe distortion and …

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

A qualitative inquiry in four Early Head Start Research sites explored the question of how low-income mothers and fathers view the role of fathers in their families. Role perceptions were gathered from a total of 56 parents of infants and toddlers across the four sites, using multiple data collection methods that included focus groups, open-ended interviews, and one case study. The data were analyzed to identify common themes across sites. The participants identified roles that included: providing financial support, “being there,” care giving, outings and play, teaching and discipline, providing love, and protection. Implications of these qualitative findings are discussed …

Comparison Of Magnetic Images Using Point And Thin-Film Magnetic Force Microscopy Tips, Sy_Hwang Liou Sep 1999

Comparison Of Magnetic Images Using Point And Thin-Film Magnetic Force Microscopy Tips, Sy_Hwang Liou

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

The magnetic images of a magnetic reference sample were compared using point and thin-film magnetic force microscopy (MFM) tips. The thin film MFM tip was made by magnetron sputtering of an amorphous metal. The point MFM tip was made by an ion milling process that produces a small magnetic particle on the cantilever. Our results clearly demonstrated that the volume of magnetic material involved in the tip-sample interaction is much reduced in the case of the point tip compared to that of the thin film tips. By comparing the magnetic images of a tri-bit pattern on a magnetic reference sample, …

David Sellmyer Publications

Studies of the effects of substrate temperature T, on the evolution of CO( 1 10)/Cr(002) texture, magnetic and physical grain size, intergrain-interaction, anisotropy, orientation ratio of remanence and coercivity were investigated experimentally. It is found that the hcp- Co(l10)hcc-Cr(002) texture is improved with increasing T, from 27OC to 265°C. The intergrain-interaction, magnetic and physical grain size decrease with increasing Ts and reach their minima at T,- 265°C where the magnetic grain size is close to the physical grain size. The correlation between the film microstructure and magnetic properties is studied systematically.

Van Dijk, Derrick E. Fouts, Amos H. Rehm, Angela R. Hill, Alan Collmer, James R. Alfano

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

We present here data showing that the Avr proteins HrmA and AvrPto are secreted in culture via the native Hrp pathways from Pseudomonas syringae pathovars that produce these proteins. Moreover, their secretion is strongly affected by the temperature and pH of the culture medium. Both HrmA and AvrPto were secreted at their highest amounts when the temperature was between 18 and 22°C and when the culture medium was pH 6.0. In contrast, temperature did not affect the secretion of HrpZ. pH did affect HrpZ secretion, but not as strongly as it affected the secretion of HrmA. This finding suggests that …
