Short-Term Memory And Auditory Processing Disorders: Concurrent Validity And Clinical Diagnostic Markers, Arthur Maerlender Jan 2010

Short-Term Memory And Auditory Processing Disorders: Concurrent Validity And Clinical Diagnostic Markers, Arthur Maerlender

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Auditory processing disorders (APDs) are of interest to educators and clinicians, as they impact school functioning. Little work has been completed to demonstrate how children with APDs perform on clinical tests. In a series of studies, standard clinical (psychometric) tests from the Wechsler Intel-ligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) were used to establish concurrent validity be-tween tests of short-term auditory memory and two frequently used tests of auditory processing (Dichotic Digits and Frequency Patterns). The diagnostic utility of the short-term memory tests was also explored. In a matched sample, Digit Span forward predicted diagnosis of APD (sensitivity = .81, …

Reflective Journeys Toward Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Tonia Renee Durden, Diane M. Truscott Jan 2010

Reflective Journeys Toward Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Tonia Renee Durden, Diane M. Truscott

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

In this qualitative case study we used Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory methodologically and theoretically to investigate the reflections of three elementary pre-service teachers as they were learning about teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students. Data sources included a questionnaire, interview transcripts, course documents, and individual written records. Cross and within case analyses were conducted using a priori and open coding for all data utilizing the analytic strategy of relying on theoretical propositions. Findings suggested that participants’ reflected beyond the classroom on influences that impact the education of diverse students and there were program specific factors that encouraged critical reflectivity …

Family Involvement For Children With Disruptive Behaviors: The Role Of Parenting Stress And Motivational Beliefs, Carrie A. Semke, S. Andrew Garbacz, Kyongboon Kwon, Susan M. Sheridan, Kathryn Woods Jan 2010

Family Involvement For Children With Disruptive Behaviors: The Role Of Parenting Stress And Motivational Beliefs, Carrie A. Semke, S. Andrew Garbacz, Kyongboon Kwon, Susan M. Sheridan, Kathryn Woods

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Children with disruptive behaviors are at risk for adverse outcomes. Family involvement is a significant predictor of positive child behavior outcomes; however, little research has investigated parent psychological variables that influence family involvement for children with disruptive behaviors. This study investigated the role of parental motivational beliefs (i.e., role construction and efficacy) as a potential mechanism by which parenting stress impacts family involvement for families of children with disruptive behaviors. Results indicated that parent role construction mediated the relation between parenting stress and all aspects of family involvement examined (i.e., home-based involvement, school-based involvement, and home–school communication). Parent efficacy mediated …

Sandhill Cranes Of Coastal British Columbia: Results Of Helicopter Surveys And Preliminary Observations Of Habitat Use, Krista Roessingh, Briony Penn

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

A pilot study on sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) was conducted on the central coast of British Columbia in May 2006, followed by 2 summers of inventory and observation in 2007 and 2008. Fieldwork consisted of gathering local knowledge of crane locales, helicopter and boat surveys, and observations from blinds. We located 29 nest sites on 14 different islands and 1 mainland peninsula, as well as several beach foraging areas and bog roost sites. Observed average crane and nest density in areas of suitable habitat was 0.21/km2 and 0.044/km2, respectively, for 2007 and 2008. Nest and …

Colonial Metropolis: The Urban Grounds Of Anti-Imperialism And Feminism In Interwar Paris, Jennifer Anne Boittin Jan 2010

Colonial Metropolis: The Urban Grounds Of Anti-Imperialism And Feminism In Interwar Paris, Jennifer Anne Boittin

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

World War I gave colonial migrants and French women unprecedented access to the workplaces and nightlife of Paris. After the war they were expected to return without protest to their homes–either overseas or metropolitan. Neither group, however, was willing to be discarded. Between the world wars, the mesmerizing capital of France’s colonial empire attracted denizens from Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States. Paris became not merely their home but also a site for political engagement. Colonial Metropolis tells the story of the interactions and connections of these black colonial migrants and white feminists in the social, cultural, and political …

Constructing Adequate Language Documentation For Multifaceted Cross-Linguistic Data: A Case Study From The Virtual Center For Study Of Language Acquisition, Barbara Lust, Suzanne Flynn, María Blume, Elaine L. Westbrooks

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

This paper confronts the challenge of constructing language documentation and data management in the face of continually expanding sets of crosslinguistic multi-media data arising in collaborative language acquisition research. It describes the development of an infrastructure and methods for creating and managing such shared language data across a Virtual Center for Language Acquisition(VCLA) by fostering collaborative scientific research in the language sciences across multiple institutions. The infrastructure reflects a research lab/academic library collaboration that integrates metadata organization in research methods. This paper describes both the research and educational components involved in the development of the VCLA

“Life, It’S Been Said, Is One Big Book…”: One Hundred Years Of Qian Zhongshu, Christopher Rea

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Headlines about China have been looking the same for some time now. “The China story” always seems to be political: labor riots and their suppression; sabre-rattling over Taiwan and cultural erasure in Tibet; catastrophic earthquakes and official ineptitude; internet censorship and jailed dissidents (the latest being Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo). Even ostensibly good news, such as the Chinese government’s investment in wind power, becomes yet another story about how China is going to eat our lunch.

Kitab Al-Hadaya Wa Al-Tuhaf: A Unique Window On Islamic Textiles, Wendy Landry Jan 2010

Kitab Al-Hadaya Wa Al-Tuhaf: A Unique Window On Islamic Textiles, Wendy Landry

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

During the first millennium, a rare kind of literature evolved in the Islamic world that provides a fascinating window on the interest and importance of material objects. A unique example of this literature, entitled Kitab al-Hadaya wa al-Tuhaf [Book of Gifts and Rarities] was translated into English, annotated and published in 1996 by Kuwaiti curator and scholar Ghada al Hijjawi al-Qaddumi. It is an anthology of anecdotes referring to the period between the sixth century and the twelfth century, probably compiled in the late twelfth century by an official in the Islamic Egyptian government.

Although the historical veracity of the …

Grave Vows: A Cross-Cultural Examination Of The Varying Forms Of Ghost Marriage Among Five Societies, Lucas J. Schwartze

Nebraska Anthropologist

Marriage is one of the most ubiquitous social relationships in human societies. However, the forms this institution takes do not follow the same patterns across all cultures. This paper examines one of the rarer forms of marriage; ghost marriage. After introducing the societies that practice this rare form of marriage, the similarities and differences between the forms this practice takes are examined. Various scholarly explanations for this form of marriage are presented as well.

Multicultural Education, Elaine Chan Jan 2010

Multicultural Education, Elaine Chan

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

North American society is becoming increasingly diverse through immigration and the birth of children into immigrant families. The foreign-born population in the United States (U.S.) represented 11.1% of the total population in the year 2000, for a total of 31.1 million people who were born outside of the country. In addition, over 22 million people in the U.S. changed their state of residence between 1995 and 2000. In Canada, 18.4% of the total population, for a total of 5.4 million people, were born outside the country, and 11.2% of the population identified themselves as members of a visible minority group. …

Teacher Learning By Script, Jenelle Reeves Jan 2010

Teacher Learning By Script, Jenelle Reeves

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Scripted instruction (SI) programs, which direct teachers to teach, even to talk, from a standardized written script, are roundly criticized for inhibiting teacher creativity and teacher learning. In fact, such programs utilize scripting for exactly that reason: to reduce teacher interference with (and presumed weakening of) the prescribed curriculum and its delivery. Yet, two teachers in this 18-month study reported learning much about language and language teaching from scripted instruction programs. Through a sociocultural lens, this article explores how an instructional program so widely decried as de-professionalizing instead became a catalyst for these teachers’ professional growth. Exploring the teachers’ reasoning …

To Discuss Or Not To Discuss: Integrating Pedagogies For Honors And Mathematics, William Griffiths, Nancy Reichert, L. R. Ritter Jan 2010

To Discuss Or Not To Discuss: Integrating Pedagogies For Honors And Mathematics, William Griffiths, Nancy Reichert, L. R. Ritter

Honors in Practice Online Archive

Classroom discussion has long been an important pedagogical tool in fields such as the social sciences and the humanities because it allows students to critically examine ideas about what it means to be a human living within communities of other humans. It allows students to formulate ideas and judgments and to reconsider these formulations as time passes and new information is revealed. Within the field of mathematics, however, professors typically rely on lectures to ensure coverage. While students are asked to think critically, they are likely asked to do so within the context of homework problems. The primary question we …

Review Of Irish Immigrants In The Land Of Canaan: Letters And Memoirs From Colonial And Revolutionary America, 1675–1815. Written And Edited By Kerby A. Miller, Arnold Schrier, Bruce D. Boling, And David N. Doyle., James M. Perry Jan 2010

Perry

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The Irish Diaspora and the influx of Irish immigrants to North America have received much attention in recent decades. The multitudes of Irish- Catholics arriving in the middle nineteenth century in the aftermath of Ireland’s Potato Famine have received the majority of this scholarly attention. In Irish Immigrants in the Land of Canaan, Kerby A. Miller, Arnold Schrier, Bruce D. Boling, and David N. Doyle tackle an often overlooked aspect of the Irish migration to North America, the largely Protestant immigrants arriving before the American Revolution and in its immediate aftermath. Using letters, and occasionally other sources such as personal …

Landscapes Of Removal And Resistance: Edwin James's Nineteenth-Century Cross-Cultural Collaborations, Kyhl Lyndgaard Jan 2010

Landscapes Of Removal And Resistance: Edwin James's Nineteenth-Century Cross-Cultural Collaborations, Kyhl Lyndgaard

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The life of Edwin James (1797-1861) is bookended by the Lewis and Clark expedition (1803-6) and the Civil War (1861-65). James's work engaged key national concerns of western exploration, natural history, Native American relocation, and slavery. His principled stands for preservation of lands and animals in the Trans-Mississippi West and his opposition to Indian relocation should be celebrated today, yet his legacy does not fit neatly into established literary or historical categories. One reason for James's obscurity is his willingness to collaborate. Both of his major works, Account of an Expedition from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains (1823) and A …

Book Review Of Insects Of Texas: A Practical Guide By David H. Kattes., Christopher J. Durden

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This guidebook is a well-illustrated, well-bound addition to our growing series on Texas insect fauna. Designed for the beginner and nonspecialist (and suitable for use in schools), it provides an identification aid for recognition of the groups to which common insects belong. Other references must be used in most cases to determine the species at hand. Today, BugGuide.Net will be the next step for the average reader. Most of the book is devoted to one-page presentations of a small selection of families, usually those that contain species most likely to be found by the casual observer. Common name, group name, …

Individual Achievement In An Honors Research Community: Teaching Vygotsky’S Zone Of Proximal Development, Kaitlin A. Briggs

Honors in Practice Online Archive

The years leading up to the 1917 Russian October Revolution must have been a dynamic environment for an emerging young intellectual living in Moscow. Eclipsed by such popular Western cultural representations as David Lean’s 1965 Academy Award winning film, Dr. Zhivago (based on Pasternak’s novel), this milieu included the writers Babel, Gorky, and Nabokov; the poets Mandel’shtam and Tsvetaeva; the composers Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky; the theater director and acting teacher Stanislavsky; and the artists Chagall and Kandinsky (Van Der Veer, 23–4). There we find situated a law student, also studying philosophy, literature, and aesthetics, who went on to become …

Book Review Of Native American Language Ideologies: Beliefs, Practices, And Struggles In Indian Country Edited By Paul V. Kroskrity And Margaret C. Field, William F. Weigel Jan 2010

Book Review Of Native American Language Ideologies: Beliefs, Practices, And Struggles In Indian Country Edited By Paul V. Kroskrity And Margaret C. Field, William F. Weigel

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

As its editors note, this collection is the first work on language ideology especially devoted to Native American languages. Its twelve articles (plus the editors’ introduction) mainly involve languages of the United States (with one each from Canada and Central America) and represent a mix of contributions by Native and non-Native scholars. The offerings generally center on the authors’ own field research, often supplemented by historical and linguistic background from secondary sources. Several themes run through many of these studies. One is a rejection of the notion that a language ideology is the monolithic stance of an entire culture. There …

Book Review Of The Nation’S Largest Landlord: The Bureau Of Land Management In The American West By James R. Skillen., Clare Ginger

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

James Skillen provides a comprehensive assessment of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), its origins, evolution, and ongoing efforts to manage the public lands for an increasing array of resources. His account documents the legal and political matrix in which the agency operates, recording the roles of key actors and processes that have influenced public lands administration, including members of Congress and presidential administrations, interest group politics, and efforts to bring expertise to the task of managing the public lands. Skillen organizes the results of his investigation into a chronology characterizing the BLM’s mandates and operations through two themes: “questions …

Book Review Of Criminal Justice In Native America Edited By Marianne O. Nielsen And Robert A. Silverman., Jill E. Martin Jan 2010

Book Review Of Criminal Justice In Native America Edited By Marianne O. Nielsen And Robert A. Silverman., Jill E. Martin

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The issues surrounding Native American communities and crime are addressed in the 14 essays in this volume. The book’s underlying premise is that “because of the tragic consequences of colonialism, Native American communities and organizations need more control over their own destinies and need more resources to do so; they need to be able to determine for themselves how to best provide services to their Native American members and clients.” Readers are likely to agree that Native Americans need more control over criminal justice issues. The book’s contribution is to show different ways tribes can undertake such control. The essays …

Book Review Of Perspectives Of Saskatchewan Edited By Jene M. Porter, J. William Brennan Jan 2010

Book Review Of Perspectives Of Saskatchewan Edited By Jene M. Porter, J. William Brennan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Intended to mark the centennial of Saskatchewan’s becoming a province in 1905, this collection of 18 essays has only just been published. Has it been worth the wait? A few essays stand out, either because they explore previously ignored aspects of the province’s history, or because they offer a fresh look at subjects we thought we already knew a great deal about. I would place Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond’s and Christine de Clercy’s contributions in the first category, and Brett Fairbairn’s in the second. Turpel-Lafond discusses the challenges that Aboriginal people have faced in Saskatchewan over the past 100 years by …

Book Review Of Identity Captured By Law: Membership In Canada’S Indigenous Peoples And Linguistic Minorities By Sébastien Grammond, Patrick Macklem Jan 2010

Book Review Of Identity Captured By Law: Membership In Canada’S Indigenous Peoples And Linguistic Minorities By Sébastien Grammond, Patrick Macklem

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In Identity Captured by Law, Sébastien Grammond assesses the constitutional and international legality of rules that control membership in Indigenous societies and the official language minorities of Canada. Grammond’s main argument is that Indigenous and minority membership rules do not violate legal commitments to equality if there is sufficient correspondence between the legal criteria that determine membership and the actual criteria that group members themselves deploy to define themselves. Membership rules based on a racial conception of ethnic identity are less likely than those based on cultural or relational conceptions of ethnic identity to correspond to actual identities and therefore …

Book Review Of Let’S Speak Chickasaw: Chikashshanompa' Kilanompoli' By Pamela Munro And Catherine Willmond, Joshua D. Hinson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Let’s Speak Chickasaw: Chikashshanompa’ Kilanompoli’ is a landmark achievement in Chickasaw language revitalization and fills a wide gap in the available literature. A Chickasaw Dictionary (1973), compiled by the late Reverend Jesse J. Humes and his wife, the late Vinnie May James Humes, is an English-Chickasaw word list, an effort on the Humes’ part to preserve the language in written form. Chikashshanompa' Holisso Toba'chi: Chickasaw: An Analytical Dictionary (1994) is a remarkable effort of over 12,000 entries and includes a chapter on “The Structure of Chickasaw Words,” a brief though thickly constructed examination of Chickasaw syntax, morphology, and phonology. Let’s …

All The World's A Stage: Reaching English Language Learners Through Drama, Laura M. S. Fortney Jan 2010

All The World's A Stage: Reaching English Language Learners Through Drama, Laura M. S. Fortney

Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design

The use of drama with language instruction has long been considered a legitimate practice. A recent survey of the literature shows that English Language Learners (ELLs) may have even more to benefit from the use of drama in the classroom. Studies showed an increase in language and problem-solving ability, as well as student self-efficacy that was transferrable across activities. Following an analysis of the literature is a proposed curriculum based on the findings of the researchers cited. This unit is centered on dramatic activities that make use of all four language domains and includes the examination of plays in writing, …
