The Growth Of Pathogenic Bacteria In Soluble Oil Emulsions, Hilliard Pivnik, W.E. Engelhard, T.L. Thompson

Papers in Microbiology

Mineral oils, when emulsified with materials such as soaps of petroleum sulfonates, fatty acids, abietic acid or resin, are referred to as soluble oils. These oils, mixed with water, form stable emulsions which are universally employed as coolants and lubricants for drilling, cutting, and grinding of metals. In addition to the emulsifying agent, soluble oils may also contain fatty oils, disinfectants and emulsion stabilizers.
The oils supplied by the manufacturer are sterile, but when mixed with water in the machine shop they support microbial growth (Duffet et al., 1943; Fabian and Pivnick, 1953; Lee and Chandler, 1941; Page and Bushnell, …

Rb54-175 Farm Family Housing Needs And Preferences In Nebraska, Virginia Y. Trotter, Margaret I. Liston

This 1954 bulletin reports the results of a survey of Nebraska farm family preferences, activities and possessions as they are related to housing needs. The study was part of a cooperative research project for the improvement of farm family housing in …

The Lawyer And The Legislative Hearing Process, Julius Cohen, Reginald A. H. Robson Jan 1954

The Lawyer And The Legislative Hearing Process, Julius Cohen, Reginald A. H. Robson

Nebraska Law Review

Despite the fact that a considerable number of lawyers are often called upon to appear at committee hearings to argue the merits or demerits of bills affecting the interests of their clients,' there are many of them — particularly those who have not ventured beyond the pale of the courtroom to whom the legislative hearing process remains somewhat of a mystery. And when they are confronted with a situation that requires an appearance at a legislative hearing, they are at a loss to know what to expect, let alone what to do. Take the case of the typical courtroom lawyer, …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Although cestodes of the genus Echinococcus have been much studied in the past, there is need for an evaluation of these morphological characters used as the basis for species differentiation. The generous cooperation of other investigators in providing necessary foreign material and the results of nearly five years of field work in Alaska make possible such a study. It is the purpose of the paper to evaluate morphological characters used at the species level to differentiate these cestodes, and to review the status of species currently considered valid.

On The Status Of Some Arctic Mammals, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The mammal fauna of arctic Alaska is comprised of about thirty species, most of which are widely distributed. A few of these are essentially nearctic species, having extended their range northwestward during post-Pleistocene time. The majority, however, consists of forms which are either circumboreal in their distribution, or which have closely-related palearctic counterparts-considered specifically distinct hy most North American mammalogists. Sorne of the foremost Old World workers, however, do not agree that Bering Strait constitutes a barrier which effectively separates the Old World fauna from the New.

Fish and Wildlife Service undertook the removal of sea otter, Enhydra lutris (L)., from the Aleutian Island of Amchitka, for the purpose of restocking range from which the animals have long been exterminated. Heavy losses among the animals shortly after capture made the venture unsuccessful. Many deaths …

Stream Pollution, Ruth Patrick Feb 1953

Stream Pollution, Ruth Patrick

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

This paper discusses the various ways in which aquatic organisms may be of use in solving problems associated with waste disposal. Since many state and federal laws set forth that nothing may be discharged that is deleterious to aquatic life, the most expedient way to determine the effect of an effluent is to study the aquatic organisms themselves.

In every river that has not been adversely affected by pollution there is a great variety of aquatic life. These organisms do not represent a great mass of living things, but rather they are organized into an intricately balance systems, often referred …

Avian Botulism Information On Earlier Research Jan 1953

Avian Botulism Information On Earlier Research

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Over the years, the disease, avian botulism, has been an important factor limiting populations of waterfowl, particularly in the West. Great numbers (doubtless millions) of ducks have died from this disease, and because of such heavy tolls, studies of the malady were begun early in the century and continued intermittently to the present time.

This summary brings up to 1950 the series of investigations on botulism by Wetmore (1918), Kalmbach (1930, 1932), Kalmbach and Gunderson (1934), Sperry (1947), and others. This information has been compiled as a service to those concerned with conservation of our waterfowl resources. A cooperative agreement …

Little is known of the physiological properties of a particular host and virus which permit multiplication of the virus. In this review stress will be laid u pon studies which attempt to discover the mechanisms in nature which maintain these viruses. The first section will relate to the geographical distribution and time …
