The Ecology Of Mosquito Borne Viruses1, Carl M. Eklund Jan 1953

The Ecology Of Mosquito Borne Viruses1, Carl M. Eklund

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The ecology of a mosquito borne virus involves a consideration of the growth of the virus within the vertebrate and arthropod hosts, the reaction of these hosts to the presence of the virus, and the vertebrate-arthropod associations which are necessary for the dissemination and maintenance of the virus. Little is known of the physiological properties of a particular host and virus which permit multiplication of the virus. In this review stress will be laid upon studies which attempt to discover the mechanisms in nature which maintain these viruses. The first section will relate to the geographical distribution and time of …

The Lag Between Scientific Discoveries And Legal Procedures, Frederick K. Beutel Jan 1953

The Lag Between Scientific Discoveries And Legal Procedures, Frederick K. Beutel

Nebraska Law Review

It is a generally recognized fact that law and legal procedures lag far behind any type of social change. This is true even in matters of change in social custom, religion, and habits of the people. But it seems to be far more marked when one approaches the problem of picking up scientific developments and transposing them to be used as tools in legal and governmental procedures. The reasons for the failure of the legal system immediately to adopt scientific innovations are numerous. Many of them are found in the nature of the legal system itself. Its ancient origins, written …

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xiv. Some Cestode Parasites Of The Aleutian Teal (Anus Crecca L.) With The Description Of Diorchis Longiovum N. Sp., Everett Schiller

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The Aleutian teal (Anas Crecca nimia Friedmann) has been relatively unavailable for helminth investigations by American workers because its range in North America is restricted to the western-most Aleutian Islands.

During some parasitological studies on Amchitka, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, in May and early June 1952, in connection with sea otter mortality, the writer had the opportunity to collect 20 adult Aleutian teal. These birds, consisting of 16 males (average weight, 392 grams) and 4 females (average weight, 353 grams) were taken at the beginning of the nesting season, Autopsies revealed that 16 (80%) of these ducks were parasitized by cestodes. …

On The Land Mammals Of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, Robert L. Rausch Jan 1953

On The Land Mammals Of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The mammals occurring on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, represent species which are widely distributed in boreal regions. They are not well known, however, and are poorly represented in collections. In the past, some of these mammals have been regarded as being specifically distinct from closely related forms occurring on the adjacent continents. It is the purpose of this paper to present some new data on these mammals, with particular reference to their taxonomy.

Hydatid Disease In Boreal Regions, Robert L. Rausch Oct 1952

Hydatid Disease In Boreal Regions, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

It is the purpose of this paper to review the status of hydatid disease (caused by Echinococcus spp.) in the boreal regions of the world. Its importance has long been recognized in Eurasian countries, but only during recent years have investigators added anything significant to the knowledge of hydatid disease in North America. There is need to disseminate up-to-date information among medical workers in Canada and Alaska, where the disease is endemic in northern regions having a large aboriginal population. Therefore, particular emphasis will be placed on the situation in boreal North America.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xi. Helminth Parasites Of Microtine Rodents--Taxonomic Considerations, Robert L. Rausch Oct 1952

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xi. Helminth Parasites Of Microtine Rodents--Taxonomic Considerations, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A survey of the helminth parasites of Alaskan rodents has been carried on by the writer since the winter of 1948-1949, as a continuation of an investigation begun in the central United States in 1942. Results of this work indicate that, despite the size of the Territory of Alaska, the survey is complete enough to furnish a reasonable knowledge of the species of helminths parasitic in microtine rodents in Alaska. Information derived from previous investigations serves as a standard against which the completeness of the present work may be judged. In the writer's opinion, the continuation of this work on …

John Wesley Powell: Frontiersman Of Science, Paul Meadows Jul 1952

John Wesley Powell: Frontiersman Of Science, Paul Meadows

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

I should explain that this book is more or less an accident. It started with a suggestion by my friend and former colleague, the late Joseph Kinsey Howard, that the Major was worth knowing. A Montana newspaperman and writer, Howard had been impressed by the amazing far-sightedness of Powell's report, published in 1878, on the arid lands of the West. At the time I was preparing a report of my own for a Rockefeller Foundation research project in the humanities. Upon reading the Major's study of the arid lands, it occurred to me that it would be profitable to review …

Electric Chick Brooding Studies, F. D. Yung, F. E. Mussehl Apr 1952

Electric Chick Brooding Studies, F. D. Yung, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Perhaps one of the most valuable lessons to be learned from a study of chick brooding is that good results can often be obtained in more ways than one. In carrying on work with electric brooders at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station, special attention has been given to such factors as insulation and to other details of design which effect economy of operation and ease of construction. Low cost rather than "cheapness" has been the ideal. The work has been cooperative between the Agricultural Engineering Department and the Poultry Husbandry Department of the University of Nebraska.

Helminths From The Round-Tailed Muskrat, Neofiber Alleni Nigrescens Howell, With Descriptions Of Two New Species, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Two specimens of round-tailed muskrat, Neofiber alleni nigrescens Howell, were examined for helminth parasites. Four species, a trematode and three cestodes, were collected. Two of these, Quinqueserialis floridensis and Paranoplocephala neofibrinus, are described as new. Cittotaenia praecoquis Stiles, 1895, is recorded from this host, and larval cestodes are tentatively identified as Taenia lyncis Skinker, 1935.

Internal Parasites Of Swine, Benjamin Schwartz Mar 1952

Internal Parasites Of Swine, Benjamin Schwartz

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The Hog is generally considered to be a dirty animal. Experience shows, however, that given a chance to graze in a clean pasture and sleep in a dry, clean place, it will do so, thus growing faster and making a better profit for its owner.

This bulletin is written in answer to inquiries, largely from swine owners who find evidence of infestation with parasites in hogs they slaughter on their farms. It is designed to tell them how to identify most of the common parasites and how to prevent such infestations.

In some parts of the United States hogs are …

Notes On Some Trematodes Parasiti,C In Alaskan Canidae, Bert B. Babero, Robert Rausch Jan 1952

Notes On Some Trematodes Parasiti,C In Alaskan Canidae, Bert B. Babero, Robert Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Except for the report of Hadwen (1922) and a few miscellaneous records, little information is available relative to the helminth parasites infecting canine animals in Alaska. During the past two years, 520 autopsies on can ids have been performed in connection with the investigation of animal-borne diseases. The purpose of this note is to record the occurrence of four species of trematodes observed in Alaskan can ids during the course of these studies; one species is apparently reported for the first time from North America. These four parasites are mentioned separately below:

Metorchis albidus (Braun, 1833)

Ackert (1937) recorded this …

The Relationship Between Altitude – I.Q. Discrepancy And Anxiety, Claire Kepler Purcell, John Drevdahl, Kenneth Purcell Jan 1952

The Relationship Between Altitude – I.Q. Discrepancy And Anxiety, Claire Kepler Purcell, John Drevdahl, Kenneth Purcell

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Recently there has been increasing interest in the use of intra-individual test discrepancies as a measure of functioning efficiency. One of the major problems in establishing scatter patterns has been that of finding a suitable internal reference point. The three reference points most commonly employed are the mean or IQ, the vocabulary score, and the altitude or maximum score. Psychologists who believe that the G factor is an ability argue for the use of the IQ as a reference point while those who believe that it is a capacity use altitude as a reference point. In regarding intelligence as a …

Among Alaskan mammals examined for helminthic parasites during 1950 was a series of marmots, Marmota caligata broweri Hall and Gilmore, 1934, from the Brooks Range, Arctic Alaska. The animals were collected a few miles south of Tolugak Lake (lat. 68° 24' N, long. 151° 26' W), and from the vicinity of Kanayut Lake, about 15 miles northeast of Tolugak Lake. This distinctive marmot has been hitherto represented in collections only by the three specimens comprising the type material. In addition to greatly extending the known range of this form, the collection of these specimens also contributes the first information on …

Progress Report: Chemical Quality Of The Surface Waters In The Loup River Basin, Nebraska, John G. Connor Jun 1951

Progress Report: Chemical Quality Of The Surface Waters In The Loup River Basin, Nebraska, John G. Connor

United States Geological Survey: Publications

The Loup River and its tributaries transport moderate amounts of siliceous minerals from the sand hills region of north-central Nebraska to the Platte River near Columbus, Nebr. Predominant chemical characteristics of these waters are a high percentage of silica, moderate hardness, and a low percentage of sodium. The composition of the Loup River water is influenced by the geologic formations through which ground water, a major contributor to the flows of the Loup River branches, has percolated. Investigation of water quality at or near proposed dam sites in the Loup River basin indicates that if soil and drainage conditions are …
